This franchise has once again just recently come back into my life. If anyone is dying for a new-ish Fable experience but can't wait to find out how the reboot turns out, I would recommend taking a detaour through a mod called Aeon Edition for Fable TLC. I think it needs to be the steam version you buy, which you still can despite Anniversary also being on there. Aeon Edition is basically the same game but it mixes up balance, exploration and rewards in lots and lots of surprising ways.

I can’t believe I played this game only ~13 years ago. I forgot so much about it. Everything except baking pies to play as the good guy while making enough money to get the good outcome. Then getting fed up over halfway through this pie hell and just going with the bad ending.
To be fair it did probably help lead to legit cool ideas in later games. For instance RDR2 letting you actually browse around shops and buy stuff from the shelves. Considering what nintendo is trying to do right now, good ideas being improved upon by other devs may be in jeopardy...
Remember liking the game a lot when I played it when it was released. I can't remember even why I liked it. It could be because I am British or something else but I do know if I tried to go back and replay it now I probably wouldn't enjoy it so I do myself a favour by choosing to keep the fond memories I have of it by not replaying it. The one thing I am most interested in with the reboot is what a Fable game will look like without Peter Molyneux over promising and vastly under delivering. I honestly think that Fable 3 suffered from the success of Fable 2. There was a two year game between the two games, where Fable 1 and Fable 2 had a four year gap between releases. I do love that they got John Cleese for your butler.
i love fable3 for the aesthetics and voice acting, jokes. you mentioned there is no fail state to the game but lets face it there is no fail state to any games, all games run on a saving progress so really how much does death even matter? personally i think fable2 had the best compromise in that when ever you got knocked down you would get a scar, the only problem was most players only noticed this once it was already too late and the avatar was already looking like they had been in a war, but there was a real sense of pride uploading your endgame avatar that was scar free and looking good.
i liked the idea with the two gloves and comboing the magic and found the idea used again in some battle royal game not long ago called spellbreak which sadly kinda died out, not to mention i'm not that big into PvP nowdays. Was still pretty fun for the short while i played it as you had quite a lot of different combos as you started with 1 elemental glove of choice that came with a set of spells and could pick up the other elements during a match and combo (or combo with other players) to set a wind spell tornado on fire or turn a firewall into toxic devilish fire with acid and so on.
Spellbreak dying made me sad. I played the hell out of that game. Took a break to focus on school (college is not fun) and when I came back it was dead.
I will say, getting this game to work on the steam deck was easy for me. I had to manage all the files on a computer, but once I did that, when I transferred the files over to my steam deck, it was all good. That's not to say it was easy, but yeah. I even have it all backed up. Because I'm crazy and I like this game lmao (nostalgia. And reaver my love 💕)
I really liked Fable and Fable 3. I couldn't get over the dog constantly barking in Fable 2 though. I've gone back a couple times and usually quit before the first hour is completed.
I feel like this is the most negative review you've ever done on this channel, which makes sense since the fable series always seemed to devolve as the games went on
honestly i think Fable 3 has the same problems as the first 2 games. the full series feels like it's wearing the skin of computer rpgs to pander to console players. it doesn't help that Peter Molyneux kept promising insane things that could never be implemented.
I was having nostalgia for this game and literally just finished watching a play through today and I see this video came out just yesterday!!! I was literally feeling nostalgic for this game yesterday!!! What the hell!!!

Love this retrspective series since I never played Fable (not having an X-Box) but still being curious about these games, since they were blockbuster sellers as I understand. Plus with new Fable on the way, it's neat to see what the original games were like. Incidentally, the story of Fable 3 seems to me like the basic plot of Mistborn which released a few years before Fable 3. I wonder if it's just a coincidence though.
I think on the new game I would love more RPG elements for leveling and progression and a heavy focus on comedy, consequences, choice, and morality. I'm actually really okay if no real estate makes it into the game this time around and they lean into the things that made fable unique.
The game is locked to 30 fps by default and if you use Borderless Gaming, it can run at 60 fps instead (except for the map and the cutscenes), which made the game easier to look at for me.
I was very disappointed when they didn't bring the RPG Mechanic's of the Fable 1 and just made the game more into the Kingdom Building Sim Game. Meanwhile the Story on 2 and 3 became less meaningful specially when trying to make a different playthrough (e.g Evil). The Final Bossfights are so lackluster unlike the Fable 1 where you fight the freaking Legend named Jack of Blades! His presence alone makes you think he's the Baddest of the Bad and he is, while giving you a Proper Bossfight unlike the Sequel Games. 😞
Frankly, 3 sounds a lot like they just took the various good ideas with zero understanding of what they actually are about and just crammed them all in one game with no skill or care.

Thanks for the video. I'm definitely less optimistic about the remake. If they actually put the time and energy into the remake, then it probably will be medieval-like, dark fantasy open world where "choices matter" with a refined combat system. That sounds like it's just going to be more of The Witcher 3, but done worse. Who knows. Maybe what The Witcher 3 really needed was a broken property management system. Onward to 400k. All glory to the algorithm.
I remember playing this game a decade ago and loving it until the final 10 minutes when the '0 days until the crawler attack' loading screen pops up unexpectedly, which I didn't have the money to afford since it was like like day 180 a minute earlier, so I was forced into the bad ending by accident since the game didn't pace the 'final year' properly. A very bad stain on what was otherwise a great solo and co-op experience for me, since I didn't know about the real estate system cheese lol
All I remember from Fable 3 is that I loved the desert part. And some quests and demond doors were cool. Other than that it's pretty forgettable. Also, I never really like it when my fantasy gets industrial revolution, removes a bit of that magic and moves it further into steampunk territory, which I don't mind per se but Fable for me was always fantasy first. Even the muskets were a bit too much for me in Fable 2.
While this game had many flaws, it still was no where my least favorite as it was far better than fable 1 and had it's pros/cons v fable 2. It also was one of the last big game from a dreamer of a dev, Peter Molyneux, who had the lead on the fable series as a whole, not to mention gems like dungeon keeper and other absolute classics. He was widely criticized on release of the game for reaching for the stars far too much. I would suggest that if you have to be criticized for something as a game designer, that's got to be the best possible thing. On release, the game played well and had the best graphics and polish in the entire series (on the xbox 360). However, as stated in the video, those aged horribly, but that is an entirely separate issue. While the game did lose many of the last bits of RPG character creation, it did add a ton of very creative interactive menu design, simulation features, and world building pieces. The previous fable games certainly had some aspects over this game, but this game overall was the most overall polished. The majority of the RPG and story issues Mortismal points out could be fixed by simply putting a in game clock on your progression. This counts for combat, character progression, kingdom progression, even the housing market cheese you could pull off after enough time invested. The only sensible reason that the clock was not put in was because the devs believed many would hate the clock, and for whatever reason, a difficulty option to enable such a feature was also not added. So ya, the devs missed the mark here, but even still, this game pushed the boundaries in enough ways that it likely inspired the game industry in many ways, both for it's successes and failures. For that reason, I still have to give it my respect despite having my own critiques of the game. If the game had aged more gracefully or if you really don't mind the graphics, I would still recommend it to someone today.
The fable series was always weird to me, every release was hyped up (mostly by peter lol) and in the end the games were ok, obviously during dev the stuff they wanted to do were reigned in quite a lot and in the end became fun games I do wish they had the time money and resources to really make them the games they could be, I had mentioned before I felt the game Kingdom of Amalur to me felt like a more ambitious Fable game though lacking the humor and britishness of it and its own issues but if they could have combined the best elements of Amalur and Fable i think they would have a winner
I never got into this game as a kid. I thought it was a knock-off zelda game. However, I'm seeing elements of games I've played before, but this one did it before most of them. The decision aspects to the criminal or glory system. I love it. Recently started playing it on the Series S because I found out it has couch Co-op and honestly I've never played a couch co-op rpg and I'm starting to like it a lot more than a gigantic mmo(not that mmos are bad). I like how we each have separate wallets and inventories. I can't find a map, and a lot of the game isn't self-explanatory. Do you recommend older fable games and do they have co-op like this one?
Fable has always had amazing ideas executed poorly with a very short story. I vividly remember beating 1 & 2 in a single night. Hooked me HARD but left me so unsatisfied and waiting for more 😅
I always said Fable 3 would be a fine game as a standalone experience, but as a follow-up to the original Fable, the kindest thing I can call it is disappointing.
I remember trying to sell "Fable III" back to Gamestop after I'd completed it. They refused to take it because they already had too many used copies in stock. 🤣
Great video! This conclusion could work for all of Peter Molyneux games - great ideas, could be better with execution. We are trying to develop a game improving on Black & White with our game if anyone is interested (Gold Gold Adventure Gold)
I might be in the minority but I enjoyed it probably just as much as did the 2nd game, so 2 & 3 would be equal 2nd. I don't think it was that bad. Maybe I just enjoy the atmosphere of fable games.
I got this on day one and felt it was about as good as as 2 when you weigh out the changes. Going from rude gargoyles to cruel gnomes sucked. Fire + lightening magic was OP. The map sucked. I thought Theresa was going to be the main enemy after 2 but they went a different direction. All in all it was ok, but i understood MS shutting down the studio as the asymmetrical game they were working on probably wasn't very fun and had they made Fable 4 it wouldn't have been very good either.
I never even tried fable 2 because I was sick of minimaps with objective markers so the glowing follow me line just completely killed any interest I might have had
The only part of this game i remember actually affecting me at all was the trip back home with Walter. It was oddly creepy and a little uncomfortable, which is impressive for this game. Other than that... yeah meh.
I ended up killing everyone in my ending. When I explored the world after the final boss, there were literally 0 npcs. So I tried to play it over again, this time making myself a landlord but I got bored and never finished my second play through. I must’ve played the first one like 15 times, the second one 4 times. So you can tell how disappointed I was in 3…
I vividly remember how disappointed I was with this compared to the 2nd game. Every one of those Fable sequels felt like "2 steps forward, 1 step back" was the design philosophy
20:11 "...and you have to find and shoot them in order to get them back to where they belong" Well that doesn't sound terrifying taken out of context, not one bit.
I never played the first two but heard so many ppl who loved them that I played this when it came out. I was left wondering who would play this over literally any other rpg. I completed the game and was left completely underwhelmed .
I played this game for like 10 minutes and hated everything about it, something felt very off. After the first fight outside in the forest I closed the game, deleted it instantly and never looked back. Then I found Angry Joe review, which I loved so much, I was glad I wasn't crazy.
i bought fable 2 as a teen on day 1, and it was the first time i regret spending $ on a game. i felt scammed. that game sucked so bad i never bothered to play this one😂 rip
I really liked the premise of kingdom management, but execution was underwhelming. Story wise, I liked the twist that Hero's brother has a valid reason for being a tyrant, and I thought it was pretty cool that Hero could prepare for invasion in less time and without sacrificing their morals like he did. I like this. Thank you
@@AD3SPG Part of the motivation for even starting is because your brother is the exact same evil and needs to be stopped. Turning around and doing the exact same thing makes no sense.
@@AD3SPGThe game has issues but I would say it's worth playing. Just remember that he is 100% right about the property thing. You will never hurt for money if you follow that path.
Its weird, like in your fable 2 video, there are alot of systems that the game was trying to do in its narrative that I appreciated heavy. Fable 3 felt alot more *serious* and when I was younger playing the game, I did buy property but being young I didn't really have a good idea of balancing the budget. So for me it was a hard system to master while essentially on a timer. Not only that, there are alot of things enviornment wise that I thought about maybe too much. Like I remember in fable 3 where you had to choose between building an orphonage or a whorehouse w/ reaver? Because I didn't immediatly understand realestate I will always remember that decision (though it could have been a school) well you can walk those streets and kind of see the consequence of your actions. That was a thing in the game that kind of carried for me. LIke fable 2 when the sister was killed immediatly and the dog died I was locked in cause I took that personally. I know its a goofy setting but I kind of look at this like the direction of saints row but in reverse in a way. Saints row from a gameplay perspective had some of the same gameplay as GTA but on a bit of a goofier more customizeable side. However, the story aespects of that type of street culture was weaved in that made me respect it beucase it was paying homage to that life and the goods and bads that came with it. When 3 came out though, it was leaning more towards that silly/goofier side and I wasn't really with it. Also from a mechanics standpoint they put the customization on 10 which was great so you see how they leaned into that aspect (and it was one of the biggest reasons why people played the game) I and others were in the minority. There were alot of serious things the game touched on but that direction changed with 3 and 4, and they leaned more into the gameplay / fun aspects that made the game sell better. Like Johnny Gat's girlfriend dieing felt something because you saw in cutscenes and gameplay how much he cared for aisha. No hate in that, but its kind of the situation I find myself in looking at why I enjoyed fable. At the time atleast, the real estate option was cool because I really felt like I was *helping* everyone. Fable itself to me does a good job at having the civiliians express themselves. One of the features in fable I wish I saw in other games was the ability to actually hold people and interact with them. I LOVED actually being able to dance and play games with my kids ingame, and it was tied to something you could feel (vibration on the controller) Its a small thing, but it helped in regards to just going into town and having fun, or holding their hand. There is a part where your trying to guide walter who is blind and you have to guide him through the desert, That *feeling* really hit cause walter was that dude ingame. But actually trying to guide him physically while it may have been rough it gave me a feeling of appreciation for that old/young relationship especially when its someone you looked up too back in the day. I think the other game that did that in a way was the prince of persia game on the 360. I liked the platforming elements but it was cool that the other character would save you but I digress. Really, fable 3 felt like an actual *game* of old to me. No optimisation of gear, just kind of investing yourself in a world through silly antics that lowkey don't make much sense. I also think compared to other games, while I agree the choices ultimatley didn't matter especially when it came down to the kingdom part, the actions did come back if you interacted with the civillians cause they love to remind you what you did or did not do. Its not like, people from megaton coming back to kill you after you nuked it, or seeing moira brown as a ghoul but its something to say the least. It for sure had flaws, but I see what they were doing. It makes me thing now they may lean more into that silly aspect of fable that I'm not super into, but I understand why they would.
I like it, it is sure not Fable 1, but I like it more than Fable 2... Speaking of that, never player Fable 2, so... I do hope someday Fable 2 will get PC remaster or whatever, and I wouldn't mind getting Fable 3 re released/remastered, but that's never going to happen.
"Hey, first Bank of Albion? Yeah, it's me, the fucking King. Give me 6.5 mil to stave off the apocalypse. I'll pay you back with interest. If you don't, I have a couple thousand men under arms who'll come and get it anyway. Okay bye."
Innit, but I have to be the merchant king, Lord of all shops and profits
All the Criticisms of this game and its systems is true, but weirdly, i still love it.
Ah yes, the game where the best way to save the world from the force trying to consume everything... is to become a landlord.
Also, it astounds me that after all the crap Reaver pulls we are expected to accept him as our advisor, rather than, say, popping him in the skull.
To be fair. If aliens attacked corporations like black rock throwing all their resourced into defending earth would be a good bet for us.

I love that Mortym is getting steadily more fed up with the game as he explains it more haha, this must be a stinker of a game
It's not a stinker, it's just a rushed mess. For them to make the game they wanted to it needed 5 years of development at least, not 2.
Its frustrating because the general premise should be an easy win and yet the game falls on its face constantly.
Fable 3 was so underwhelming and disappointing when I played it at release. It removed so much of what made the first two games fun that I don’t even know why it was released.

A very bad stain on what was otherwise a great solo and co-op experience for me, since I didn't know about the real estate system cheese lol
despite all it's flaws that i noticed some of even as a kid Walter is probably still one of my favorite characters in the series.
Yeah I played this again about a year ago. It was an issue to set up and put a couple mods on it.
I enjoyed playing fable 3 co-op a lot , i l never played fable 1-2 so i have nothing to go off
All I remember from Fable 3 is that I loved the desert part.
Despite all hate for fable 3 it was the first game i fully beat and how when i learned landlords is the way to get rich
Ah fable 3… even with all the negatives it was still my favorite one. It least my memories of it jajaja
One of the few games where I hated the main quest and loved doing the side quest
Fabulous Trio RUclips Jazz 🎶
Didn't care too much for this game, but was surprised that I got the PC port of this to work despite the drm issues with GFWL
i remember beating this game on day 1 and being so upset on how short it was.
It's wild to me that Microsoft is too lazy to bring this game back on Steam.
I'm reminded a bit of Armello.
Ah yes, the greatest magic in a Hero’s arsenal: property management
I never realized that there was no health mechanic in this game. I just thought I was really good at the game. 😅
Mort have you ever reviewed the assassin's creed games i know not all of them are rpgs but id love to see you 100% them!
20:11 "...and you have to find and shoot them in order to get them back to where they belong"
Well that doesn't sound terrifying taken out of context, not one bit.
The experience orbs flying around at 8fps hurts my brain.
became a landshark to save the kingdom
Babe, wake up. Morty is finishing the Fable series
I never played the first two but heard so many ppl who loved them that I played this when it came out. I was left wondering who would play this over literally any other rpg. I completed the game and was left completely underwhelmed .
Good ideas done poorly is basically Peter Molyneux's specialty at this point.
Imagine if the reboot winds up being an MMO
this is kinda what I remember about fable 3. Could have been great, instead it's Fable 3
I wish I could get a copy on pc
My favourite fable. Great co-op play 😀
Blades and Tornado was busted and always dropped my FPS to 5.
Despite this installment being the weakest(considered by most) I still enjoyed it all those years ago
How many RPGs give us a place called Sanctuary
Am indifferent towards the first…enjoyed the second….loathed the third.
I played this game for like 10 minutes and hated everything about it, something felt very off. After the first fight outside in the forest I closed the game, deleted it instantly and never looked back. Then I found Angry Joe review, which I loved so much, I was glad I wasn't crazy.
Tx for an update. I made sure that it won't worth replayn.
Nothing beats being the "good" guy and defeating evil by becoming a "landlord"
free comment. yep.
Gronk!
i bought fable 2 as a teen on day 1, and it was the first time i regret spending $ on a game. i felt scammed. that game sucked so bad i never bothered to play this one😂 rip
Thank you
The story made no sense at all when you decide to be evil.
Not trying to be a douche but why ? I never played part 2 or 3.
@@AD3SPG Part of the motivation for even starting is because your brother is the exact same evil and needs to be stopped. Turning around and doing the exact same thing makes no sense.
@@Blasted2Oblivion definitely encouraged to make someone play thanks on that information I only played the first one vaguely.
@@AD3SPGThe game has issues but I would say it's worth playing. Just remember that he is 100% right about the property thing. You will never hurt for money if you follow that path.
@@Blasted2Oblivionbut when I do it its cute.
Also from a mechanics standpoint they put the customization on 10 which was great so you see how they leaned into that aspect (and it was one of the biggest reasons why people played the game)
I and others were in the minority.
2nd game needs a pc port
The only reason for anyone to play & enjoy Fable 3 is if it was your *very first* RPG video game. You know, as a gateway to the genre.
