Is that necessary to post heat treatment of a 21.7mm outer dia 3m thick round tube of Chromoly steel 4130 after the welding procedure?, we will use in our electric motorcycle trellis frame.
I'm curious about the higher grade 4150,4340...(I'm not familiar with the naming conventions) etc alloys and their relation to 4130....tensile strength vs weight and flexibility/rigidity based on the annealing and hardening process.
That is a great question, where you looking into Chromoly? or are you interested in exploring aircraft steel or aluminum as well. I am no metal detecting shovel specialist, but might be able to lead you in the right direction if you know the distinct features you need.
@@DIGOLOGIST our experts are saying that tool steels are going to be the best option (4140, 4130, or O1) we offer. That said, Manganese steel is like the Cadillac of shovel steel because of its strength and abrasion resistance, but we don't stock that currently.
Great question! The answer is either one, once heat treated to similar hardnesses they are practically the same. They have almost identical mechanical properties once hardened. It’s like arguing over which skittle color is better. Other than the color they actually taste exactly the same.
@@onlinemetals Thank you for your reply. Tekton tools agrees with you but there have been heated arguments for years on the forums saying otherwise. Most people believe that CrMo is best, perhaps because it costs more, but I'm sure that there are different qualities of steel and different hardening methods that really determine which is best.
Great channel! I am a recent subscriber, and really enjoy your summary videos. I have a suggestion. What are the best alloy candidates for the high temperature liquid floride salt reactors being considered for thorium? I’ve heard that China recently had the first functioning high temperature fluoride salt loop. I’m assuming it’s a high nickel alloy? It should be a very interesting video to research and watch. Thx. R
I'm a sheet metal worker and I want to make a toolbox out of chromoly sheets. I can imagine chromoly sheets being way stronger than heavy mild steel junk I have lying around my house.
Thanks for the information! When will the next video be out and what will it be focused on?
No problem, Adam! We are working on aluminum alloys next so we will keep you in the loop. Hoping to get them out in February.
My chromoly chisels are tough like S7 equivalents. Able to hold a good edge.

I have 2 bycicles with cr-mo frame.... it's unbreakable. One is cr-mo 4130.
That is awesome! Thank you for sharing.
I am building metal detecting shovels. A competitor uses aircraft steel. What grade would you suggest. Thanks

Online Metals I need a steel that won’t rust and can be heat treated then tempered.

Online Metals thank you I will be in touch in pricing
Highly Informative ! Much appreciated & Thanks !
I've seen many arguments about which steel is better for sockets, CrMo or Cr-V. What is your opinion?

@@onlinemetals tools made of cr-v is more common and it's little cheaper. Professional tools is, in many cases, made from cr-mo.
can 520 and 4130 chromoly be sanded or polished to look chrome or no?
Hi There, 4130 and 520 can be polished but they won't be quite as bright a s a chrome finish. The steel is darker by nature.
are 4118 steel characterized as a chromoly?
Yes, that is a chromoly alloy steel!

Thank you, Ralph. Really interesting topic. We will definitely have a deeper discussion on if this makes sense, but really appreciate the request!
A new alloy was approved and is ideal for molten salt reactors: Alloy 617 and is a combination of nickel, chromium, cobalt and molybdenum.
I am looking for a chromoly tube

Yes sir! Chromoly has a significant strength advantage over mild steel in both tensile strength and yield strength.
What is much better steel or chromoly?
That would depend on your end goal or use. What is the context?
His face, it feels like he is mocking me
I can assure you, he most definitely is not. Materials are a complex subject. Hopefully, you gained something valuable from the video.
