If you want to talk about toughness, like him or not, I don't think there is a tougher business man in the world than Vince Mcmahon. He might not be the richest business man in the world (still pretty damn rich at just a little under $1 billion) but he fights for his company. He battled against people richer than him (Ted Turner), he's gone through court cases that were fighting against his company, he's been heckled in the media since pretty much day one of his companies existence, he's gone through miserable financial failures (the XFL). Most businessmen would have folded their businesses from the pressure if they dealt with what Vince Mcmahon has endured. Through all of it, he kept his company alive at times when things were bleak and turned it into the multi-billion dollar global entertainment company it is today.
Well put. I think McMahon is pure sleaze on the business end of things, but Costas was just relentless, belittling and condescending throughout the entire interview. Guaranteed the NFL was pulling his strings.
The only reason why we're still talking about this today is because of how Costas baited Vince, and he bit. Otherwise, nobody would remember this today.
At the same time, there was a bit of truth behind Costas. The play was completely substandard. I couldn't blame viewers for not wanting to watch terrible football when you could watch an AP Top 25 college team or an NFL game. I was 7 when the XFL was around, but the league did have some interesting ideas. Mainly the scramble was questionably interesting. I didn't realize until watching the 30 For 30 that the XFL started going in locker rooms, or they mic'd players for games. I always just assumed the NFL did that. That being said, I always felt that XFL could have started operations in 2001, but start play in 2002. I mean, starting a league and expecting a bunch of guys who were NFL castoffs or under the radar college players to play phenomenal football in four months is asking too much.
Well, that's not NBC's fault. The XFL was a clusterfuck about when and where they were playing and broadcasting. They even ran so long once that SNL, for the first time in the history of that show, was delayed. It was just poor management.
If Vince McMahon could have separated the XFL from the WWF/WWE, then I think there is a very real chance the XFL would have succeeded. As Vince McMahon said, the XFL from a production standpoint was ahead of it's time, and the NFL has since adopted quite a few of the things the XFL did as far camera angles, etc. The problem was that people naturally like to group things together, and the XFL became guilty by association for the sports fans who aren't pro wrestling fans.
I disagree. I think the problem was that he didn't go far enough with a football/wrestling hybrid, he half-assed it. I want to see football players cutting wrestling style promos on each other to draw heat. And possibly locker room attacks before the game and during halftime. From outta nowhere you have a football player getting hit with a chair, or the old salt in the eyes. Who wouldn't want to see that shit?
1. XFL wasn't minor league. It was supposed to be a major league alternative to the NFL. 2. McMahon's the one who lost his cool, so his panties were the ones bunching up.
I hated the XFL, but I would take it over the NFL now. There are to many rules and to much damage control. Just play the game...and Dez Bryant was robbed man
samachi to many rules have the opposite effect eventually. It's like having to many people on an assembly line. Eventually they will all get mixed up and cause havoc.
This isn't an interview, this is a roast! Bob Costas came with both guns fully loaded and ready to fire! Part 2 is where it really heats up and Vince McMahon starts physically getting in Bob Costas's face.
+Cameron Mcdonley none tbh... I was playing along with OP bcus another one of Vince McMahon's commonly used phrases is "I would suggest", along with "quite frankly" and "things of that nature".
I liked the XFL. I think it could have worked with some major tweaking. Vince made the mistake of attacking the NFL, having WWE announcers, and above all the teams were not game ready when the whistle blew to kick off the season.
ToruKun1 The weird thing is if you look thoughout history of wrestling most of the wrestlers was ex-football players. Whether High School, College, or Pro. Ala Austin, Rock, Cena, Angle, etc.
kbshowtyme That's true, but it's mostly because footballers physiques are really suited for wrestling, whereas actually trying to combine wrestling with football...it just kinda comes off as doofy. Unless you're Mr. Touchdown from CHIKARA
McMahon will be the very first to admit that he went up against the NFL and LOST HIS ASS on the XFL... but you have to understand this video was done after a FEW games...it was never given a shot in the media, not one media outlet promoted it, and for sure, the NFL fought against it..but McMahon is the very first to admit he LOST HIS ASS.... but it didn't kill him, he learned from it and he's stronger than ever.. best business man ever..
I actually liked the XFL. The big mistake they made was not developing the teams correctly. A pre season and proper training camps would have made a big difference.
Vince is a patient guy. He's a smart dude, and has to constantly explain things multiple times to people who think they know business better, and obviously don't have a clue.
Thank you, sir. Could you put the old Off The Recods -shows from the late 90s. You know, the Eric Bischoff 1998, The Rock 1999, etc... But once again, THANK YOU!!
At first I was trying to figure out who was doing the better job in this interview. (I still can't help but indulge in some wrestling a few times a year, and still greatly respect the show for what it is, especially considering that everything you see and don't in the WWE is pretty much micromanaged by Vince, that's pretty fucking impressive)... I really respected how Vince was taking these "jabbing" questions. They were definitely hard-pressing and to the point. Even though he seemed to be on Edge - pun intended - I thought he handled himself with a great amount of reason and poise. While at first I was (again, as a wrestling "fan") kind of questioning why Bob Costas seemed so smug and self-pleasuring during the interview, I sort of had to remind myself that he's just doing his job. And in that regard, I gotta respect Bob here too... Great interview all around. Really wish the XFL could have lasted a little longer, just to see what Vince could've done with it as he became more accustomed to the new varieties of the business. In all likelihood it would've became cheesier and campy, but maybe he could have made it work, at least for a niche audience. Not to put the guy on a pedestal or anything, but he really is a genius at what he does. Would have been awesome to see him stretch his brilliance to something so different and succeed. Anyway, there's my fifty cents.
Oddly enough I kind of agree with Vince on this one... The marketing was bad and the idea was executed very poorly. But the level of play isn't anyones fault it's a TEAM game you have to have 11 grown men on the same page every down and that's tough to do without a pre-season and rule changes. But I think this was just a money-grab. Vince n Co. Saw what the AFL did and the kind of money they made by being bought out by the NFL as well as the ABA did to the NBA. This just wasnt the era for it to be done sports are pretty set in stone.
All I can say is without guys like Vince we would all still be living in caves and farming our own food lol. He has a vision. Succeed or fail he has balls to try it out and stand tall and strong if it fails. Gotta respect that
I hate Bob Costas. He pisses me off when he uses sports programs to try and push his political views. After the Sandy Hook shooting during Sunday Night Football he goes on a anti-gun rant. I wanted to smack him. There's a time and place for political soap boxing and a football game isn't it.
David L i think he was using that whole sandy hook thing as a example, we all know when sandy hook took place, Sorry people are talking about your man Bob costas! get over it already!
He didn't go on a rant. He made an intelligent observation becuz like alot of us other smart ppl, he's fed up with unnecessary gun violence. And he's not only an announcer but a commentator so there's Nothing wrong with that. I applaud him for having the guts to speak up about it.
@Tobias Chance-- of course you like hearing opinions that are in accordance with your own, that isn't unusual. of course you feel like your side of any given debate is the right one (though you might be a little more humble about the possibility that you could be wrong). the point is not everybody shares those opinions, and a sports show isn't the place to air them.
I give Vince all the credit in the world for attempting to start up a football league in his own vision. I think it never got off the ground because, well, there are some points in this interview that stick out. Namely, I'm thinking PRESTIGE, and TENURE. It has taken the AFL/NFL A LONG TIME, a VERY long time, to get where it's gotten. So many trials and errors, so much success AND failure, so many big moments, so much history. What you learn is that, sports leagues are kind of bigger than themselves. The major ones that are already there are the ones with rich histories that won out a long time ago. If you're going to start a league, it's got to start at grass roots level and build up. Vince tried to start it off straight into premiere Prime time, and for a sports league to have that prestige and respect, it's got to face those mistakes and even out those bumps over VAST periods of time. In short, it was a grand vision, and I give Vince props for pursuing a vision, but I think he learned the hard way that, to pull off an entire sports league successfully, it was way harder and much less practical than he anticipated.
If McMahon really wanted the league to succeed. He should've had NFL free agents sign onto the league after the season and ask if any NFL teams needed any players to develop and get some playing time there and just keep the NFL's rules and play it like a regular football game and focus on that.
Cheezburgercatzfl true, I just wondered what if he tried to make a feeder league like MLB does with AA and AAA teams. Granted the NFL development needs to be a lot faster than in baseball.
+RedskinsCanefan21 Feeder league? Best idea ever. NEVER gonna happen. Ever wonder why there's never NFL games on Saturday, unless the college game is waiting for bowl season? Yeah. Too much money. The NCAA makes billions and pays their players a big fat donut (not a real one, that would violate rules). Why would the NFL pay to develop players when they get it for free?
I'm surprised at the tone Costas took in the interview. I don't watch wrestling but I have respect for McMahon when he says he's a businessman and risk taker because that IS what's good for America , if I can sound cheesy. I liked his answer and Costas clearly shows himself , as one person commented, to be a shill for the NFL. A lot of jobs were created . Who cares if it didn't meet Bob's standard ? I wish the XFL was still going strong.I'd watch.
If it isn't easy, then why did they go on this big-dick marketing campaign where the XFL was supposed to be "football for bad asses?" This is a joke. It doesn't matter what you do with the game or the rules, if you have sub-par football players, you have sub-par football. That's the BOTTOM line. Now, if you wanna take this shit to small markets like Des Moines, Iowa or Portland, Oregon, then keep it low key, experimental and low-cost like it's AAA baseball, that's one thing. If it takes off it takes off. But the XFL pretty much marketed itself as a direct alternative to the NFL for football fans who wanted a "harder" game. They took this shit to New York and Los Angeles and San Francisco... to the huge media markets that already have professional sports going on year-round, and your giving them a shit sandwich.
"But the XFL pretty much marketed itself as a direct alternative to the NFL for football fans who wanted a "harder" game" I'm not quite sure that was the XFL's aim with the marketing. I think they did want to promote an more physical game, but not necessarily a competitor with the NFL (heck, it aired in the spring). One of their biggest flaws, however, was thanks to the huge WWE-themed rollout, that's exactly the perception they created. I can understand why they took such a tactic. As Vince says, it's hard starting a league from scratch, particularly when it's going to air on network TV. Therefore they hyped it up as much as they could in order to get the league off the ground, without any real regard for what the fans would be expecting. They should've presented it merely as a quality spring football league with (some) more physical rules, and an unprecedented level of access for fans. The quality of football really did improve by the end (not that anyone watched). They should've had more of a pre-season however. They wouldn't have gotten the huge ratings at the start but watchable football will find an audience one way or another. Ultimately all the WWE connections proved to been extremely detrimental, both in perception (fans expecting something different from what the league could offer) and actual presentation (piss poor broadcasting and cheap gimmicks that turned a lot of fans off). The minor league angle could've worked too, but with a guy like McMahon taking that approach wouldn't even have been worth it.
Costas is a great interviewer and, as much as I've enjoyed the WWF/WWE over the years (not so much recently), he's still asking a lot of valid questions and pushing buttons, which is his job. Very fun interview, but also illuminating.
Jake O'Neil , Vince McMahon has said before that he thinks that if NBC would have been willing to stick with them as partners he would have stuck with it too, because he fills that the XFL would have succeeded in the long run, and I have to agree. I don't think it would have ever been a threat to the NFL, but I think they'd have offered a good enough product that it would have eventually been profitable. Sometimes you have to take a financial loss to make more money in the long run of things, it's why the WWE is sticking with the WWE Network even though it is losing money at the moment, because he knows in the long run it will make money, and I'd have to agree.
Vince is a genius when it comes to wrestling. When it comes to other industries, not so much. Football - FAIL. WWE Network - FAIL. WWE Films - Fail. Stick to what you are good at Vince, wrestling.
How is the network a failure? It's still building up and has 2 million subscribers. WWE movies have been around the same level for years, they make them some money
Neodup The network is not really a failure but they are not making as much money out of it as they expected and it killed their ppv business. WWE movies studios are a complete disgrace because of the quality of the movies and the fact that most of them don't even make it to theaters and go straight to dvd.
+TreborHG_93 The network is still growing, it's not going anywhere anytime soon. They get just as much from PPVs on the network as they did when people bought the for $50 each, they just cut out the middle man. Their movies are supposed to be straight to DVD movies at the moment, they understand their place, and still produce them because they do profit from them.
Let me be clear, that your comment is not necessarily unfair, but quite frankly, research indicates the quality of McMahon's responses is high, while those questions asked by Costas are neither fish nor fowl. I think there is a general perception that Bob Costas is one of the most mindless things we've ever seen, when you consider the calibre of McMahon's responses is generally far from low rent. Some people say, that's the bottom line - but quite frankly, and let me be clear, that your comment is one of the best there was, the best there is, and the best there ever will be!
The key word is balance. It's not an either or veterans or newer talent. He can (and does, although the WWF used to be better at balance) feature both on major PPV's; and the winners depending on their respective slots. And there is ALWAYS a "void." When Bruno Sammartino first cut down his schedule there was a drop, ditto when Hogan left, ditto when Austin called it quits. But talent slowly replaces them as mentioned, and some of the guys we mentioned will fill those slots. It is a cycle.
People can say what they want but Vince McMahon had the Balls to do what no one had done since the USFL and no one will probably ever do again. AND he kept it honest until the ratings tanked to the point he tried what he knew as far as cheap stunts..... had there been social media, more network acceptance and yes, better quality play it may have done ok.... I enjoyed it and I HATE pro wrestling but Love Football.
What's up with all the Costas bashing? He's doing his job, and he's great at it. Two men, years at the top of their profession. This is an interview, and it's Costas' game, so I'm not sure if some of y'all would prefer soft balls. Costas is right, and it was proven shortly after. If Costas wasn't great at his job, none of us would be here 15 years after an interview, which is completely irrelevant to anything going on today.
Vince does make a great point in this interview and that if you watch the NFL and how they presented you the game before XFL and how they present the the game now after the XFL the NFL took a lot of their production tricks and trade
I actually liked the XFL, it was nice to see more football and there were cities featured in it that lacked pro teams like Birmingham and Las Vegas. I also watch the CFL and Arena League, I enjoy football as much as I enjoy hockey.
LMFAO! This Vince McMahon is taking Bob Costas to tooooooown. I love it. I wish we could see more of this side of Vince in the media. Media people can be so disrespectful. I think this Bob Costas is exactly as Vince McMahon described: A judgmental, disdainful, misrepresenting douchebag. Luckily McMahon came to this interview with some major dog fight in him though and wasn't having aaaaaaaaaaany of it. I love it. Vince McMahon brought his drill sergeant that he usually uses behind the scenes in WWE with commentators and keeping everyone in line. If that spaz Bob Costas kept his mouth shut for two seconds, he could have known the point Vince was making which was although yea WWE will have storylines with degradation and nasty stuff in it like any plot of a show, at the end of that storyline is always a positive moral and a good lesson.
***** It could have happened to anyone including Sting in WCW, HBK @ WM12,or even Cobra in WCW in the mid 90's! Any who has a car and drives, can get killed on the road in a wreck, just like anyone who did that stunt before Owen, could have been killed as well. It was a accident. Accidents happen! Vince has to live with that everyday for his entire life. Blaming Vince is not going to bring him back to life!
Vince is a massive asshole and has a huge fucking ego but he's a smart asshole and that's why he's had the success he has had and has the money to show for it.
The problem was, they kept changing rules of play every week. One week it was one way, next week it was another, and it would incorporate not only antiquated NFL rules from a bygone era, but the CFL, USFL. et al
No, it's not that the veterans "take" main event slots; it's that they earned those slots years ago due in part to their own drive and skills and in part due to Vince's promoting of them in the past. He also mixes in newer talent as said. Guys are where they should be and Vince is smart to utilize what he created. The Shield and Bryan are other good talents and possible future stars. I'm sure in 15 years you will be labeling them "part timers taking main event slots" as well. Good point.
Why are people getting mad at Costas? He made a great interview and McMahon was happy with it. If Costa lobbed him softballs, people wouldn't still be watching this 15 years later.
Nah man, his questions weren't the problem for me. It was that he was acting like an obnoxious condescending douche throughout the interview. He insulted Vince's product and his audience. I'm glad that Vince stood up for the company and the fans.
You're joking right?! He kept saying "there are some guys" and "many believe." Real journalists name names! He i steered his opinion throughout this interview and was too much of a bitch to say it himself. He's a lowlife coward and does not deserve to be on tv for credibilities sake
Becuz they're all a bunch of McMahon worshippers & don't want to see their previous idol look bad, that's why. Bob did nothing wrong here. He was tough but fair.
+Tobias Chance Hardly any wrestling fans worship Vince McMahon. A lot of us strongly dislike him as someone that's out of touch, perverted, racist, a backstabber, and ignorant. Even with that opinion of Vince, a lot find this interview to be deliberately offensive to him. There were no questions that offered any sort of positive narrative for him. The only purpose of this interview was to humiliate Vince McMahon and to create the narrative that he is a failure. Costas didn't ask one question that gave Vince the opportunity to look good. I love Bob Costas, but he's never been an unbiased journalist. Which is fine, but don't let it show in your interviews.
+grasd2 You're right. This was a great interview; which is expected from Costas. Is there any doubt he is the best at what he does? But I think that Vince was also great. And, to my surprise, I thought he made some good points. We can all agree that Costas was into something when he said that the XFL carried a stigma. That league was doomed from day zero. But, no one can't deny that Vince was REALLY into something; which is why the NFL adopted a bunch of the "gimmicks" from the XFL with the camera shots, etc. If people would've been a bit more open to the idea of the XFL, it would probably still be around. Let's face it. It was better than Arena Football, and that crap is still around.
Costas didn't just not "pull any punches" he threw haymaker after haymaker from jump street with a smug fuckin' aura about him the whole time. I actually have respect for Vince here, he defended his endeavor and accepted he fucked up a bit
kathartik the WWF wasn't what it is now when he took over. It was a small territory wrestling promotion. Vince took over made it global and beat out all his dads competitors. I would say that makes him pretty good at what he does.
During CM Punk's 2011 heel run, in which he cut that famous promo and had that five-star match with Cena, Punk became the top seller of the company, proving that somebody can in fact outsell Cena if pushed correctly and nullifying your point.
Vince is a Patriot.... Without Vince life would be boring... i cant express how much joy wrestling haven given my life as well as so many others. Mondays going back to school never sucked because we had primetime and then raw
The increased buyrates for Brock's PPVs beg to differ on that last point. And I'm not denying Vince initially gave him the chance, I just dispute the idea that his long-term goal was to rely on the Rock to sell Wrestlemania 9-10 years after his last match. The fact he now has to to sell Wrestlemania, has not made any bona-fide superstars since then (save for Cena, sadly) and has to rely on the novelty buys rather than people paying to see their regular wrestlers shows that statement to be false
one of the smartest business men in the history of our world. Always before his time. Even his father couldnt see his dream. Great cut throat straight to the point guy. salute.
I wasn't sure what "part timers" you were initially referring to; but Vince developed more than just The Rock or Lesnar. I also assumed you were referring to guys like Undertaker, Triple H, Jericho, all of whom he molded the careers of and all of whom were a part of WrestleMania. His goal was to make long lasting new stars to replace the ones he lost (Hogan, Macho Man, etc.) and he did so exceptionally well. Austin could easily be counted as well if he hadn't suffered an injury and moved on.
Vince actually makes some good points, although I like the irony that everything people were saying about the XFL, wrestling fans have been saying about TNA since it started.
Vince's mistake with XFL is he was making it into a soap opera just like the WWE. Men don't tune into football to see a soap opera. That's why ratings fell drastically after the first week.
I'm saying it died in the sense that the way they were booking started making no sense and the talents they rejected and accepted were questionable decisions. Like pushing the Miz over John Morrison. Or pushing Kingston super hard then jobbing him out for a while, or Alex Riley getting way over then getting dragged down to superstars. Now we're gonna get guys like Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, Bray Wyatt, and The Ascension who will definitely make a more interesting product if pushed correctly.
vince could not mess with the NFL. even tho at the time wwf was still the hottest thing when it came to ratings. but now the NFL is the big sports jauggernaut. but when it comes to proffesional wrestling no one can touch vince. thats his bread and butter. he revolutionized it. all the great characters he had helped invent. he is truly the mad genius
from my limited understanding, xfl. may have survived and even thrived had donald trump not sold the league out for short term gain. there's a great documentary about it all, I can't remember the name but it's available here on youtube.
finally the uploader put that weird protection thing over it, so it doesn't get immediately automatically flagged. It's a little disorientating to watch however.
Rumor has it that Vince was so pissed off during this interview he tore his quads.
Akhamesh Truth be told, I laughed so hard at your comment, that I also tore my quads
XD
Akhamesh overuse of steroids did that
I thought it was from walking into the ring at royal rumble
+Njoekiezoekie Actually, it's a real condition called "Kevin Nash Syndrome".
+madassgamer I swear Kevin Nash's legs are made of glass.
Holy fuck Bob Costas came at this with such a vehemently anti-Vince stance that it was ridiculous.
Right?? For a man with Costas' reputation he came off to me at least, as very unprofessional.
There aren't that many living legends these days, but Vince is one
Fuck yeah man 👊
lmao
Didn't know it took a legend to condone, for years, sexual harassment and drug abuse (marijuana, cocaine, steroids, etc).
Your comment aged terribly
Vince tried to WCW the NFL
+Andre Moore and look what happened lol
+Babaganoosh420 you didnt get what he was trying to say lol
+Babaganoosh420 That went right over your head, son.
+Andre Moore Instead, he only TNA'd the NFL.
Andre Moore
I love Vince's arguing skills, he's pretty good at handling questions and standing his ground. this type of masculinity is not around today.
I honestly think he should have run for President then.
What does masculinity have to do with having good arguing skills?
+Paul L helps with problems ???
Bryan HDGaming What
Nvm
he took on the most popular sport in the nation- u gota give him props for taking risks

I think people need to be cheered for good shit not being greedy and screwing your employes.
TheGame2k2s THANKS YOU MAGNIFICENT SON OF A BITCH
in March of 2017 he's now worth 1.1 Billion. What a hustler
Thanks for this upload. Waited forever to see it. I'm no McMahon fan but you can see why he got pissed. Interviewer went out to bust his balls.
such a dirty interview by Bob Costas so many personal attacks on Vince McMahon which has nothing to do with what the actual interview was about
Don't PC this, dirty interview? Whatever. It's called an interview period, can't handle the questions don't go for it in the first place.
PhantomXInc Hi liberal
Thanks
That's the liberal way.
HE HATE ME
Costas was just shilling for the NFL at this point. Vince was making fair points and was just antagonized every point of the way.
I was gonna say the same thing.
Well put. I think McMahon is pure sleaze on the business end of things, but Costas was just relentless, belittling and condescending throughout the entire interview. Guaranteed the NFL was pulling his strings.
Yeah, totally agree. Costas was being a total dick here. But it made great tv.
The only reason why we're still talking about this today is because of how Costas baited Vince, and he bit. Otherwise, nobody would remember this today.
At the same time, there was a bit of truth behind Costas. The play was completely substandard. "dick is a stand up guy...." LMAO
I'm not going to lie, this interview makes me want to watch XFL
Morgan Freeman's favorite freckle if you're not a football fan, you'd probably like it. If you are, don't. It was terrible...
Joey Clemenza I'm not it big football so it would probably amuse me
Morgan Freeman's favorite freckle well you’ll have your chance in 2020
Your wish is Vince McMahon's command 😂😂😂
dont worry bud its coming back next year look it up
Let's be honest, when there was an XFL NBC did shit to promote it. To this day I couldn't tell you what day the games were on
Well, that's not NBC's fault.
That sounds retarded.
You're telling me you don't want to see some of these football players get a chair shot?
BigBadJerry Rogers no dude, it’s supposed to be football
Why does Bob seem to be mad that Vince started the XFL?
He doesnt like the way wrestling became low brow and holds Vince personally responsible.
COSTAS! ME AND YOU AT WRESTLEMANIA YOU HAVE NO CHANCE IN HELL!!!!!!!
LMAO get him Vinny
GohModley lol wtf
hey your quite welcome. This is such a classic it desperately needed to find a home on youtube
Heated Vince is the best Vince. Bob crossed the line though when he asked if Vince would start "fixing" the games to try and increase ratings.
Bob Costas had his panties in a bunch over minor league football. What a dork!!
1. XFL wasn't minor league. It was supposed to be a major league alternative to the NFL.
2. McMahon's the one who lost his cool, so his panties were the ones bunching up.
About 14:50 Vince's blood pressure starts to go up. Vince calls Costas "elitist" and Costas keeps passively taking digs at McMahon's integrity.
I hated the XFL, but I would take it over the NFL now. There are to many rules and to much damage control. Just play the game...and Dez Bryant was robbed man
samachi to many rules have the opposite effect eventually. It's like having to many people on an assembly line. Eventually they will all get mixed up and cause havoc.
the nfl is becoming the xfl storyline after storyline
60BloodyChamp60 Dez wasn't robbed, it was the right call, cry more little girl.
2020, you can watch the XFL again.
This isn't an interview, this is a roast! Bob Costas came with both guns fully loaded and ready to fire! Part 2 is where it really heats up and Vince McMahon starts physically getting in Bob Costas's face.
Joey Crowdle
And he's pissed off pretty much from the get-go. Awesome! lol
vince would tear him apart in a fight
Vincent "Quite Frankly" Kennedy McMahon who loves to do "things of that nature".
:)
"I would suggest" you show Vince McMahon a little more respect
+SpaceTimeValentine ooooh very scary keyboard warrior lol
+Cameron Mcdonley pheeew that really flew over your head, didn't it?
SpaceTimeValentine Was it a Corporation reference, or Jerry the King Lawler kissing Vince's ass on commentary?
+Cameron Mcdonley none tbh... I was playing along with OP bcus another one of Vince McMahon's commonly used phrases is "I would suggest", along with "quite frankly" and "things of that nature".
I liked the XFL. I think it could have worked with some major tweaking. Vince made the mistake of attacking the NFL, having WWE announcers, and above all the teams were not game ready when the whistle blew to kick off the season.
Vince is classic
#BringBackTheXFL

airbaler hey
..Tune in at 3 pm. XFL is back....BITCH!
Vince is a smart man, but he tried to bring football and wrestling together. That's why it didn't work.
Don't forget his try at bodubuilding also!
The only time football and wrestling ever worked together was in Eyeshield 21

*High fives Torukun*
Nicely said
YA-HA!!!
The XFL failed and that's the bottom line cause Stone Cold said so.
Apart from when he wears an XFL shirt on an ECW PPV hahahah
What?
Lolol
The XFL sucked. Too much WWE everywhere. WWE logo's, interviews, etc. It felt staged.
Well, it was a WWE project.......
The Heroes Workshop So true.
CDubs HasIt
Considering how Vinnie Mac keeps his product adapting to the times, you're absolutely right.
Finally, someone has posted this interview! Thanks a million, Numba1!
I actually liked the XFL. The big mistake they made was not developing the teams correctly. A pre season and proper training camps would have made a big difference.
I was thinking the same thing too!!
Vince changed so much physically from 1999-2001. Even his voice
I think you mean 1989. In 1999 Vince was in peak physical condition.
Vince is a patient guy. He's a smart dude, and has to constantly explain things multiple times to people who think they know business better, and obviously don't have a clue.
After seeing the second part I was dying to see this video. Thank you.
I bet Tebow wishes the XFL was still around lol.
Kenneth David Cody hes in luck
Kenneth David Cody 2020 is Tebow Time!
Thank you, sir. Could you put the old Off The Recods -shows from the late 90s. You know, the Eric Bischoff 1998, The Rock 1999, etc...
But once again, THANK YOU!!
Who's here after watching xfl 30 for 30 ?
Anyway, there's my fifty cents.
who's here from whatculture
MEEE
just being honest or else I wouldn't of answered cause I hate these types of comments. :) but I'm being nice
+Nathan “Reetin” Spruth lol
+Finn Thomas What bar is Vince Mc.... Oh wait. Wrong thing.
+Zer0FiveSeven ha ha
this AMAZING rare interview was once on youtube.. thank God it is here again!
vince had major balls for trying to start a pro football league on his own to compete with the nfl.
WWE PG would not approve XFL
Pretty sure the Sandy Hook shooting was years after this ... but thanks for your input?
No shit Paul. Thanks for the info, captain obvious.
In short, it was a grand vision, and I give Vince props for pursuing a vision, but I think he learned the hard way that, to pull off an entire sports league successfully, it was way harder and much less practical than he anticipated.
costas has the prototypical "little man's syndrome." For each and every inch he lacks in height he adds more extreme pushiness.
Vince can definetely hold his own in a conversation
If McMahon really wanted the league to succeed. He should've had NFL free agents sign onto the league after the season and ask if any NFL teams needed any players to develop and get some playing time there and just keep the NFL's rules and play it like a regular football game and focus on that.
I don't think he could've, because free agents expected NFL wages, these guys were paid a few thousand a week, lol.
"But the XFL pretty much marketed itself as a direct alternative to the NFL for football fans who wanted a "harder" game"
I'm not quite sure that was the XFL's aim with the marketing.
I agree with what you said but you mis-spelled "your" and "you're". I hate when people do that
Costas is a great interviewer and, as much as I've enjoyed the WWF/WWE over the years (not so much recently), he's still asking a lot of valid questions and pushing buttons, which is his job.
Very fun interview, but also illuminating.
I'm sure that deep down Vince would love to give the XFL another shot
Yeah I'm sure he'd be just thrilled to throw away another $60 Mil.
Jonathan Turbide Yeah..I'm surprised he hasn't joined forces with Donald Chump. Two assholes against the world.
@winterlandboy-- i believe trump was the primary reason the xfl failed...
+Mychael Darklighter Trump tanked USFL not XFL
Am I the only one who thinks Vince use the phrase "quite frankly" way too much everytime he's on tv in any scenario?
It is a cycle.
mcmahon owned Costas here. come back and watch this every few years. highly entertaining
Great points, slightly crudely made, but great points nonetheless. If you haven't already, I suggest reading the book 'Chokehold' too.
Not a single mention of the quality of the program, just he marketability to ad sales
Vince is such and asshole. That's why i love him
***** It could have happened to anyone including Sting in WCW, HBK @ WM12,or even Cobra in WCW in the mid 90's!
+Bourg Productions moral standards? I'm not familiar with the situation can you enlighten me?
***** oh ok
+Isaak Keidser Flygare He's an out of touch, 70 year old asshole who doesn't know what the fans want. He hasn't since the Attitude Era.
The problem was, they kept changing rules of play every week. One week it was one way, next week it was another, and it would incorporate not only antiquated NFL rules from a bygone era, but the CFL, USFL. et al
Lets not forget Vince had a crack at starting his own bodybuilding federation too
+Dan How dude was super ripped for a minute there. Seemed like it came outta nowhere
+ehwren
Roids
And he started it in the midst of that 1992 Steroid Scandal
No, it's not that the veterans "take" main event slots; it's that they earned those slots years ago due in part to their own drive and skills and in part due to Vince's promoting of them in the past. He also mixes in newer talent as said. Guys are where they should be and Vince is smart to utilize what he created.
The Shield and Bryan are other good talents and possible future stars. I'm sure in 15 years you will be labeling them "part timers taking main event slots" as well. Good point.
Bobbyboy Costas started attacking Vince from second ONE... bravo Vince for standing up to that lil pip squeek puppet
He Hate Me!
Th only thing the xfl produced
nope, tommy maddox went on to quarterback the steelers for a season or 2, before they drafted big ben
W H A T C U L T U R E
ESPN: 30 for 30 brought me here!!!
WWF NOT WWE!! WHY DO YOU ALL KEEP CALLING IT WWE HOLY FUCK
It is called WWE now. Go watch RAW it won't say WWF.
Joseph Pardi WWF was better, not the same, which is why I stopped watching
when will the XFL be released on DVD????
"I'm an entrepreneur" he says - after inheriting his business from his father.
He bought it from his father, not inherited.
yeah, I know - it suddenly clicked a few hours later and I was like "wtf was I thinking" thanks though :)
cool :)
+Kie Mws
He bought it of his father's money
kathartik the WWF wasn't what it is now when he took over.
They were ahead of the Curb! on Entertainment! I TRULY SWEAR THE NFL WERE SCARED AS HELL AND PAID THEM TO GO AWAY!
Vince is a Patriot.... Without Vince life would be boring... i cant express how much joy wrestling haven given my life as well as so many others. Mondays going back to school never sucked because we had primetime and then raw
vince mcmahon is not a good man.
Agreed
What are you basing that on?
+Spencer Smith How many billionaire CEOs do you know?
That's a good question to ask. Anybody with that kind of power and money has to screw/hurt/destroy others to get to that level.
Vince is badass and Bob is a douche. The biggest douche I've ever seen. Xfl is the only mistake he's ever made when it's comes to a business venture.
7:45 😂😂" Dick is a stand up guy and his been a friend of mine for many many years "🤣
Vince McMahon is a very clever man and a genius .😊
It was a work. Bob and Vince are old friends. Bob actually special guest ring announced The War to Settle the Score in Feb 85 Hogan VS Piper.
one of the smartest business men in the history of our world. Always before his time. Even his father couldnt see his dream. Great cut throat straight to the point guy. salute.
One of the the most inspiring people i've ever seen. He always backs up what he has done.
Bob was annoyed and motivated by that when interviewing and Vince sensed it which is why he reacted the way he did I can't blame him
Vince's mistake with XFL is he was making it into a soap opera just like the WWE. Men don't tune into football to see a soap opera. That's why ratings fell drastically after the first week.
geeze that was a tough interview
I'm saying it died in the sense that the way they were booking started making no sense and the talents they rejected and accepted were questionable decisions. Like pushing the Miz over John Morrison. Or pushing Kingston super hard then jobbing him out for a while, or Alex Riley getting way over then getting dragged down to superstars. Now we're gonna get guys like Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, Bray Wyatt, and The Ascension who will definitely make a more interesting product if pushed correctly.
"The WWE and Football..........naaaaah."
Vincent Kennedy McMahon said that once during a WWE promo after his XFL failed and was cancelled.
vince could not mess with the NFL. even tho at the time wwf was still the hottest thing when it came to ratings. but now the NFL is the big sports jauggernaut. but when it comes to proffesional wrestling no one can touch vince. thats his bread and butter. he revolutionized it. all the great characters he had helped invent. he is truly the mad genius
from my limited understanding, xfl. may have survived and even thrived had donald trump not sold the league out for short term gain.
there's a great documentary about it all, I can't remember the name but it's available here on youtube.
the look on vince's face in the thumbnail brought me here
enjoi024 I DIED LAUGHING WHEN I READ THIS
most badass businessman of our time
finally the uploader put that weird protection thing over it, so it doesn't get immediately automatically flagged.
It's a little disorientating to watch however.
