- Let's do some Wizard skating! Inline skating has so much depth and breadth to its various disciplines. Today's video is about exploring these 5x80 rockered NN Dragon frames for general skating as well as exploring the Wizard skating style. This is a style of skating I've been interested in, but haven't really spent much time exploring. Winter weather forces me into small spaces for some of my sessions, so I thought it would be a perfect time to pick up some frames built for flatland tricks and dive a little deeper.

I have seen you do some wizard moves previously and you clearly get the mechanics. Your soul slides inspired me to acquire that skill, but your and great knowledge of your edges and wheel bite makes wizard skating a non-issue for you.
Thank you, and awesome about the soul slide! You bring up a good point about how learning things helps you learn things, lol. I’ve found that any technique I pick up just makes me an overall better skater. To your point, a lot of it boils down to the same principles of edge manipulation and weight distribution. So every different way you can get that practice helps overall. Appreciate the comment and happy skating :)

You summarize quite well the particularities of the 5x80 setup in the city. My favorite setup for the city for a while. I'm having so much more fun with this setup than with any of the others. It's stable, manageable, responsive. No need to go super fast downtown. In the city center, we are more often on footpaths, on sidewalks than on the road.
You spend more time braking than accelerating.
I reserve the big wheel setups or with fewer wheels for less confined, less teeming environments.
Yes, that's why I can't wait to try them in center city where I like to skate and "speed" takes on a whole different meaning and is measured on a different scale. It's what I love about city skating. The energy of the constant change of pace and change of scenery.

It was great hearing your impressions on these. You are looking pretty smooth for just messing around and experimenting! I would imagine there is quite a bit of advantage to being lower to the ground with a 5x80 as opposed to a 4x100. Hope you are surviving the PA winter!
Thanks! Yes, these frames do feel lower. The odd thing to me is that the frames themselves are almost identical in height to my Endless 100. It seems like there's more clearance between the frame bolt and the 2nd wheel than there needs to be. I'm assuming they were erring on the side of being compatible with more boots. It just makes me want to try the UFS wizard frames more... But despite that, they do just feel more connected with the ground. Less like I'm "on stilts" than I feel with the 4x100.
Knock on wood, but the southeastern PA winter has been fairly mild so far. Yesterday was absolutely gorgeous (for late January) and I got a nice city session in. Skated today as well in the suburbs. Happy skating :)

Welcome to the channel! Thanks for watching and subbing, I really appreciate it. I'm not entirely sure how long I've been skating because I learned as a kid. I think I started blading around 8 - 10 years old and mostly skated to play pickup street roller hockey. I stopped when I was 16. Then in November 2020 (22 years later) I put my hockey skates back on and started shooting around at hockey rinks for exercise. I quickly discovered urban skating (via Bill Stoppard's YT channel) and haven't looked back yet. So I've been back on skates for a little over a year, but I had a core foundation that luckily stayed with me from my youth. I'm still learning new stuff though, I didn't even know how to power stop when I started back up a year ago. So I guess altogether something like 7 to 10 years?
I love seeing new folks joining the community, so welcome and I hope you find as much joy in skating as I do :)

I was a flexible child and wrestled in high school and college, but I thought over the years (I'll be 40 this year) I'd lost it all and felt tighter. Maybe I'm wrong and I am more flexible than I thought! Thanks for stopping by :)

interested in the stock frame and would like the nn dragon im contemplating the fr3 to saving some cash. Im just not sure what the stock liner is like.
Thank you! I'm enjoying the Intuition liners a lot, but it's all I know, unfortunately. When I got back on skates in November 2020, all I had were my hockey skates so I started on those and then went to the FR1 Deluxe Intuition and those are the only skates I currently own. I wish I could give you some feedback on stock liners, but I simply have never used them and can't speak to them.
I have Wizard NR100's but I'm interested in 5 wheel setups also, the NN frame looks good.. I need to find some nice smooth surfaces to skate on tho for those to really shine, and I live in the sticks so I have to travel to find decent spots to skate. Nice skating, cool vid, subscribed
Ahh I’m jealous of those NR100s! I’ve been debating grabbing some wizards for a while. I’d love to know what they’re like. The 5 wheels are fun so far. Haha, I love my Endless 100! Most of what you seen in the video I do on my Endless 100 as well. I'll admit the wizard stuff is a little easier on these, but it's not a drastic difference. At least not at my current skill level.
@@rerollinginline so you are probably gonna stick with the 100s then? Im curious what you will think of the 5x80s for ubran skating also. I like jumping and doing 180s and ive noticed that on 100s it feels less durable
Honestly, ideally I’d just have multiple boots for different setups. I don’t like changing the frames a lot, but I do think depending on how I want to skate, I could grab different skates. So I wouldn’t say I’ll “stick with my Endless 100” but that I would use all my frames on different sessions. I’m honestly still not sure if I like any frame “the best”. I haven’t been on my Endless 90s since July and I’d like to go back to those and remind myself what they’re like.
They’re all great frames with different feels to them. I want them all!

Nice! I have to agree they're fun. I'm interested to see how they do in my typical "city flow skate" kind of session, but they're definitely great for small spaces and playful tricks etc.
@@rerollinginline not even that slow and you'll get used to the weight if you've noticed yet. Super stable and maneuverable! They're my main skate for all round skating now!

Pretty sweet pretty sweet. You don't need much to be happy on rollerblades eh. I recently switched my 125 wheels on my Powerslide Next skates to 80mm street invaders. First day out today felt good. Didn't feel as fast but jumping was soooo much better. Landing on the 4x80 felt incredible. Would love to learn some of these wizard moves, maybe they are doable on a 4x80 setup. Your skates look like they fit you really well. I have this issue where my skates just don't get tight enough around the ankle. I'm wondering if I should buy a myfit liner 1 size down? Ever heard of someone doing that? It may be that I've broken in my current liners so much too that they just don't hug the ankle as much anymore. Love the way the 4x80 looks though so sleek. Fun stuff fun stuff.
No you don't need much because the source of the fun seems to be just having wheels on your feet. I'm clearly no wizard expert, but all you really need is a bit of a rocker and you can do this stuff on 4x80. I started learning the very basics on HiLo 72-72-80-80 hockey skates. And yeah, I used the term "playful" because I wanted to jump more in these. I wanted to do little stuff on curbs and things more. It's just lower and more stable and you feel more attached to the ground.
I'm planning to get myself a pair of inline skates as a beginner, but wanting to progress into wizard skating later on, what are your advice & recommendation on getting a first pair of skates based on the criteria stated above???
I’m not the best for Wizard skating advice specifically. I only dabble in the style. However, I think an “urban” style boot, with a hard plastic shell and removable liner would work just fine as both a beginner boot as well as trying wizard stuff. That’s the exact path I’d taken. My FR1 Deluxe Intuition skates in almost all of my videos are urban boots. The thing you need to learn about is frame mounting types as the frames are important for wizard. The frames you see in this video are “165mm mount” which is compatible with my boot, but didn’t come on them. Most urban skates will have that style of frame mount. The other big mounting system is Powerslide’s proprietary “trinity”. I think there are more frame options available in the 165mm variety though

These particular frames are a fairly standard mount. They'll fit any "165mm" or "195mm" boot, which is the most common for urban boots and so they fit my FR1 skates no problem. That being said... NN Skates also offers these 5 wheel frames in other mounting systems such as UFS (most common for aggressive skates) and Trinity (Powerslide's proprietary mount system)

My 90mm flat setup can't make moves like that, I'm sure it's because of the frame. Skates without rocker fail in absorbing shocks, this gets better when the wheels start to rocker again.
Yeah the rocker is kind of essential to these kinds of flat ground tricks. Though you don't need a pre-rockered frame. I started learning these on flatt HiLo hockey skates, with a naturally worn rocker.

Personally i dont see the need for more than 4 wheels per boot and the extra weight.

Thanks! Yes, I paid for these myself to satisfy my own curiosity. I didn't get them because they're "better" than 4 wheel frames, but because they're "different". I feel the same about tri-skates, but I'd still like to try them. I don't think I'd like tri-skates much, but a lot of folks do. I just want to try it all. There are aspects of these 5-wheelers I like better than my 4x100/4x90 and aspects I like less. However, I do need more time on them to really form a better opinion.
Regarding the weight, they don't feel heavier (I guess I should weigh them). Because of the rocker and the fact that you're lower to the ground, it makes me want to do more jumping honestly. Despite being 21mm longer (324mm) than my Endess 100 (303mm) frames, they are more maneuverable because of the rocker. I used the word "playful" in the video. They make me want to move my feet more, which isn't necessarily good or bad.

There are three very good reasons for a five-wheel setup: 1. with smaller wheels, you’re closer to the ground, which gives you more control, 2. the extra wheel adds an awesome lot of extra stability compared to a 4x80, and 3. the five wheels make the rocker smoother than a four-wheel rockered frame, since there are more points of contact. That makes a 5x80 very interesting for flatland tricks. You haven’t got the speed of a 4x100, but it’s such a rewarding setup for learning Lions and Gazelles. Or for learning all the different kinds of 180s. 😊

Would you please determine the standing height of the setup from the floor to the rear screw connection?

2. Its not the 5th wheel that gives you more stability, its the frame length.
3. The NN rocker sketch shows that only two wheel touch the ground at a time.
All the tricks are doable with rockered triskates aka figure skates.

1. A 5x80 is way closer to the ground than a _4x100._ (Of course it can't be closer than a 4x80, du-huh. 😎) The two main setups for wizard skating are a 5x80 and a 4x100. Practically no-one uses a 4x80 for wizard skating (and slalom skating is something different).
2. The 5th wheel obviously makes the frame longer than the one of a 4x80, thus giving you a longer wheelbase and more stability. You're just saying the same thing differently. 😉
3. Yes, indeed: two wheels touch the ground at a time. But there are more _POSSIBLE_ points of contact, which allows for a smoother rocker. That's the real magic of a five-wheel setup.
I surely believe all wizard tricks are doable with figure skates and triskates. I can now even do lions (some, not all) with my naturally rockered 3x125. But a 5x80 makes everything so much smoother. And Brock Jacobs of City Blades, who's an established figure skater, argues that a figure skating setup is something completely different than a wizard setup. I would love to try a figure skating setup though! Although it could very well be that I'm too clumsy to use those skates for the kind of skating they're made for. 😄🤦♂️
