  • If you're a mobile filmmaker then chances are you've considered an iPhone filter mount or an Android filter mount for more control over your exposure. In the 180 degree rule shutter speed is so important - it should be 2x your frame rate.
    24fps = 1/48 shutter speed
    60fps = 1/120 shutter speed
    240fps = 1/480 shutter speed
    But, what's the best way to mount filters to your phone? In this video, we'll compare Moment Phone Filter Mount vs Moment Lens Filter Mount to try to answer that question. Moment is undoubtedly one of the best companies on the market for mobile filmmaking accessories
    and both of these options present clear pros and cons.
    Learn about how the Moment Phone Filter Mount is fast and efficient but doesn't allow you to mount your Moment lenses and how the Moment Lens Filter Mount takes more time to use but does allow you to mount every Moment lens but the 14mm fisheye.

    Unfortunately those adapters don't come with the T-Series version of the lens filter mount so the 18MM sticks out past the ring preventing you from attaching any filters. You have to add on an extension ring which of course doesn't come with it. Really sucks because I was excited to start using it as soon as I got it. Now I have to wait for the extension ring.

    That lake behind you looked so familiar…and then I noticed your’e from Virginia (too). Great video. I’m in the process of transitioning away from my M43 setup to my iPhone and have debating about a filter size to settle on that combines portability (small) and the ability to deal with the every evolving shape of the phone. The struggle continues.

    I bought the most recent Moment 67mm "snap on" filter adapter for the iPhone 14Pro/max only. I regret that purchase. I should've gone with the clip on phone filter mount you show in this video. The "snap on" adapter is made of bendable plastic material. Their website says the decision was to cut down on weight, but it means that the filter needs to be attached in two steps -- (1) Requires TWO hands to snap in before (2) carefully screwing the filter into the plastic threading. IF (after multiple attempts) you were careful to snap the plastic filter adapter on correctly, it should stay in place but (for me) this attachment method doesn't install confidence with costly filters and is too fiddly when wanting to work quickly on-the-go.
    I’m considering switching to the clip-on version (you show in video) for faster, secure, one-handed filter swaps on-the-go. Don't like how clip method covers the corner of back screen (slightly cover the app interface) but I'm willing to make this sacrifice over using the snap on plastic mount …assuming it fits fine with iPhone 14Pro. (?)
    Has anyone used this clip-on filter adapter with an iPhone 14 Pro or Max? Any issues? Does it fit correctly and snug over all lenses. Any vignetting with standard-wide or ultra-wide lenses? I’m using a Moment case and the Beastcam app as my primary app.
    I own the Moment Lens filter mount for my Moment 58mm lens. I am pleased with this mount for a fast, secure attachment. It's a solid metal no-flex construction and the rubber insert seems to hold it secure with "normal use".

      Tim - I appreciate all your thoughts here! I haven't used the new snap-in filter mount from Moment but I do not like the new snap on lens mounts so I'm not surprised you've had the experience that you've had.
      I'm getting the 14 Pro soon enough so expect a video where I discuss attaching these filters.

    I am currently buying Moment gear. I have a Pixel 6 Pro. Unfortunately their current universal phone filter mount is not compatible. Which means Pixel owners can only use filters on a lens attached to the main wide camera. Which is tragic because the Pixel has such a wonderful ultra wide and the 4x Tele (when it's truly optical and not cropping). I'd really love to make use of my phone lenses with filters.
    I understand the popularity with iOS devices, which is easier for them. I just hope that if they can design an Android case that can accept lenses for various Android devices - that they can offer solutions for Android filter attachments on our phones lenses. ❤️

      What I did was a DIY job on another P6P case with a glued on step up filter ring to enable me to use 67mm filters over all camera. It works a treat. 😘

    • @photoswithphones
      @photoswithphones  2 года назад +1

      Igor - thanks for the kind words. As for your question, I don't have the Ulanzi anamorphic lenses to test for certain. That being said, I would think the 1.33x lens would work and the 1.55x lens would not. I hope this helps!

    • @markymaclmb
      @markymaclmb 2 года назад

      @@photoswithphones I wonder would it be ok to just order the 52mm Cinema Bloom Filters to put onto a Ulanzi anamorphic 1.55XT that comes with a filter adapter for 52 mm. My real question is, why even go up to a 67 when they give us a 52mm filter adapter already? Is it because to avoid Vinettes or is it to get as much light into the lens as possible? Also I will be using it with a Smooth 4 stabilizer and don't need the unnecessary weight. But if the 67mm Filters have a legit reason as to why it is better than a 52mm filter (which can also be ordered from Moment) then I might have to invest in both camera and lens 67mm adapters. Let me know what you think sir.

    great! I just got my 15 pro max and I want to try using variable ND filters outside- this Moment 67mm Phone Filter Mount -the one in your video looks good. It's a bit too big at 67mm for the filter...I guess there is nothing smaller that will cover the 3 lenses on the pro max iphones...and I can use my own variable ND filters? I worry a bit about scratching the screen of the phone-or putting too much pressure. Does the clamp covers too much of the screen? I want to use it with black magic app for video and I think it will not cover important parts of the screen while using the app. Thanks for the video

    • @photoswithphones
      @photoswithphones  7 месяцев назад

      You make solid points. I wouldn’t worry about scratching the screen as the only part of the mount that touches the screen has a nice felt pad on the contact point.
      Your other concern, however, is legitimate. I really don’t like how much of the screen becomes unusable when I use the Phone Filter Mount which is why I really don’t use it all that much. If you’re serious about mobile filmmaking and you want a work around and aren’t worried about expense, I would look into BeastGrip’s options. You’ll find something workable that mounts directly into the BeastCage - a iPhone specific case/rig contraption.
      I hope this helps and I’m sorry for the delayed response!!

      Good question. Without being on the field and doing some testing, I hesitate to give a definitive answer. If you go onto the field and use manual exposure, what is the Shutter Speed and ISO? If the ISO is low and the shutter speed is right at or slightly more than 2x the frame rate then you shouldn't need a filter. If your shutter speed is too high, you may look into a VND filter. I hope this helps!

    Can you use a MagSafe tripod mount whilst using a Moment Phone Filter Mount? (not the moment Lens Filter Mount on top of Moment lenses.)
    I can see that if I use the Moment Lens Filter Mount it creates enough height so it won't crash with the MagSafe accessories.
    I use iPhone 13 pro and the magsafe coverage area is already pretty close to the camera unit. I would like to know if I can use both.

    Great video with good info. I have two questions:
    What happened when you tried to use the lens filter mount on the 14mm Fisheye lens? Did you get vignetting or was it just not possible to mount the lens filter mount on that m9 ent lens?
    Have you ever tried to attach a lens hood to either the phone filter mount or the lens filter mount (just the lens hood with no filter.). If I get a lens hood with 67mm threads, or a lens hood that just slips over a lens and has a stretchy hole, I don’t see why this would not be possible. But when talking to Moment by email they say it is not possible. I’m just wondering why not.

    • @photoswithphones
      @photoswithphones  Год назад

      1. You just can't attach any mounts to the 14mm because of how rounded the lens is. Perhaps you could build something to workaround this issue, but neither of Moment's options will work.
      2. I don't entirely understand why you would want to attach the lens hood? You can use the macro lens hood on the macro lens.
