The first few seconds of Main Street in Adventureland (Altoona, IA) made me so happy! That’s my childhood theme park and I even worked there as a teen. I actually worked on Adventureland’s only dark ride, The Underground!
Happy to see Monster Mansion so high on this list. As a native Atlantan, that ride is an absolute classic and the refurb was done so lovingly. “Stay out of the marsh” has been common vocabulary for virtually every person I met growing up.
The precursor to Monster Mansion at Six Flags Over Georgia was a dark ride called Tales of the Okefenokee back in 1967. It lasted for 1 year, and was redesigned by Sid and Marty Kroft, before it closed in 1980. The storyline was based on the Uncle Remus books.
if you ask me, the original haunted castle ride was way better than the upgrade and way more creepier. I mean it had a crying mummy that you would pass by under flickering candles and a demonic chef cooking his face. a guy impaled by spikes falling towards you and even some grim reaper looking guy throwing coal into a furnace and the best part of that ride is that it had the overture from phantom of the opera playing inside the ride which was perfect for creepiness in it.
I went to Playland Park at age 11 (On my birthday too) with my crappy deadbeat dad. He told me all about how he used to go there, and when I heard that a dark ride from that place was on there, it took me back a good few years. And here's the kicker here: I never went on it! I'm kicking myself now!
Rode Justice League at Six Flags Great Adventure and I was surprised at how great the ride ran. I also paid a ride op 15 bucks to skip the line... Thats six flags for ya. lol
@@julienbrosseau I'm too fucked up in my knees for great adventure....I'd check this out. Haven't been to great adventure since 97. The year batman and robin chiller kept going out of service.
My 2 favorite non-Disney dark rides are Haunted Castle and Cave Train Adventure (both at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk). I also love Calico Mine Train at Knott’s Berry Farm.
I’m so glad you put “Monster Plantation” on here!! The first time I rode it when I was a kid my dad told me there was a Gilla Monster in there that loved to pull little girls ponytails 😆 Naturally I started crying. Ah Dad’s and the heckling of their kids..
I havent been on Kaleidoscape at Elitch Gardens, but I remember that attraction was previously a shooting ride with ghosts, and it totally did keep score
I agree. Out of that style ride by Sally, that is absolutely everywhere, the one at Lake Compounce is in really good shape again (as is the one in Niagara Falls)
I love the Terror Ride at Lagoon theme park in Farmington, Utah. It had a recent remodel that brought it up to date and kept the old charm. Great remainder of the haunted house style rides that I love. They also have a dark ride called Dracula’s Castle that is pretty cool. Check them out!
I grew up going to Lagoon and riding the Terror Ride! As a teen I got to go through it in the late 60’s with the lights on that was very cool! I spent hours in The Fun House next door to The Terror Ride. I went back there a few years ago while visiting a friend and was so happy to see they kept it running!
They need to update Dracula’s Castle though. For instance, the spinning tunnel at the end hasn’t worked since the 1980s, and it doesn’t have much to do with Dracula anymore.
The one at Magic Mountain is particularly special because it's literally the only ride in the park you can cool off on. Every other ride in the park, you bake in the sun, even the flume ride Jetstream is no relief since they cut down all the trees that used to provide shade on it. Magic Mountain has always struggled with the idea that people sometimes want a little more out of a park then coasters. Don't get me wrong, those are certainly what I consider the best part, and if I didn't enjoy the park I wouldn't have been getting season passes for the last several years consecutively, but live entertainment, air-conditioned seated experiences, etc, are integral parts of a well rounded park too.
Justice League: Battle for Metropolis at Six Flags Great America and Six Flags Over Texas are my favorites followed by Yosemite Sam's Gold River Adventure at Six Flags Over Texas, Ghost Blasters at Nickelodeon Universe, Boo Blasters at Boo Hill at Kings Dominion and Kings Island, Antartica: Empire of the Penguine at SeaWorld Orlando, Calico Mine Ride at Knott's Berry Farm, and Curse of the Dark Castle at Busch Gardens Williamsburg (R.I.P.).
In the Loop Well I guess I made the right decision to go to Dallas instead of San Francisco in 2016. The literal reason I chose that place was because I was worried that ride would soon close. And it did. Just not from anything I would've expected.
I’ve only been on one in this list which is the Monster Mansion at SFoG. My favorites include the aforementioned Monster Mansion, the Terrorride and Dracula’s Castle at Lagoon, and Ghostwood Estate at Kennywood. I also like Noah’s Ark at Kennywood but that is a walkthrough.
That is a really good Dark Ride-I remember it first as as Monster Plantation that opened in 1981 , But do know before that it was a totally different Dark Ride-Tales of the Okefenokee -From the park's opening in 1967 until 1980

I wish it didn't have those stupid blasters though. With how good the scenery on that ride is, those stupid "pew pew" guns ruin it in my opinion. Many dark rides are ruined by having blasters added for no reason.
1:40 Live near here. Some kid died in the boats track one year, got caught up in the gears under the boat because he jumped out after getting scared. It used to be a much better ride, complete darkness at points where you couldn’t even tell if your eyes were open. Since then though, they’ve added LED dim lights to I guess keep a Kid from ever getting that scared again...
you should consider heading over to Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri...they have a couple of dark rides...one is called Fire In The Hole which is an indoor roller coaster with animatronics akin to Pirates of the Caribbean (but with hillbillies) and the other is the Flooded Prison Mine which is a mining theme animatronics of prisoners in a flooded mine...cool part is it's also a shooting ride where the guns actually work as do the counters (which are on the guns themselves)
There's another great non-Disney or Universal dark ride in the U.S. that wasn't on this list. You probably haven't been on it, so no problems here. This ride is another Haunted Mansion, and it's located at Funland in Rehobeth Beach, Delaware.
