This review truly drives me insane. I bought the gen 1 LG gram 17 and my gf and i share it. I'm about to buy the refreshed gram 17 so we can each have one. It's by far the best laptop I've ever used. "the best uses for big displays are demanding tasks" ??? what?? What about having your word document and multiple browser windows open at the same time? Or what about just looking at the screen comfortably without having to hunch over and have their eyes

I returned my girlfriend's fully loaded XPS 15 for $2500 and got this at costco for $1400 and she likes this one WAY better. She uses it all day at home and school for her school work and really likes the larger screen (especially since she doesn't have a desktop computer or external monitor at home). I don't understand why laptop reviewers say 17" is SOOO massive when you look at people who do work on desktop computers nowadays usually don't consider monitors under 21" and more and more people are going for multi-monitor setups on their desktop computers. Obviously people really like screen real estate and if you are used to triple monitor setup on your desktop setup, it is painful trying to get anything done on a 15" laptop. My only complaint about a 17" laptop screen is a still wish it were bigger (magically bigger, without making the laptop any larger).

Actually this would be a good laptop for my usage. I need a lot of screen space for charting on patients in Epic (electronic medical record) and all my work is via Citrix so I don't need processing power.

My wife has this, she loves it, and I love it too.
You can basically hold it with one hand, with JUST your fingertips, and waving it around, it's THAT light. Vibrant color accurate screen that is WQXGA 1600P so you get far more vertical real estate than most laptops, I find it very useful, and surprisingly OK speakers for something this thin (just remember to turn off all effects in the playback device panel).
I am waiting for the 2020 version, plug in an eGPU and all my computing need is set.

Not only video or graphic designers use 17" notebooks. Data scientists, programmers, data analysts, professionals who use the spreadsheet, and the list is tall... Can you bring such professionals and interview them or give the devices to them to use for a while in order to give us indepth real day in life expressions or use cases? 😡☺

I wrote LG in 2018 asking if a 17" gram was something to look forward to being in the market in the near future. I'm excited to see that they have made it. I'm just now waiting for the 10th gen cpu version to come out. Perfect for spreadsheets on the go.

I love this laptop and would use it for most reasons other then the reviewers suggestions. You can't beat size and lack of weight and the Gram fits the bill here. Browsing, video and streaming, video editing and multi tasking etc would be top notch. It would be my desktop replacement and if need be take it on road trips because of the light weight. Great job LG!

  • @AndyJMacLeod

Why does this review start by talking about a MacBook? Just tell us about the Gram.
This week, I got my LG Gram 17 with the 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD. First impressions:
    1. It's light for a 17" laptop, but not crazy light. It's still a laptop.
    2. The build quality is good. Reviewers show how flexible it is, but I don't think you'd notice it unless you look for it. The only thing I'd say is that the hinge is not quite as stiff as I would like. If you tried using it on a train or plane, it might bother you. On a desk it is stable.
    3. The screen is glossy. (How I wish it was matt!) I got a screen protector to reduce the reflectivity, but I couldn't get it on without air bubbles (which I hate even more), so for now I'm living with the gloss. But it's fantastic having a 17" screen for productivity (and day trading). And it's clear and bright. It's overall a good panel.
    4. Keyboard: It's okay, apart from a couple of differences from a standard UK keyboard layout. In particular: the way the "|" key is situated adjoining the Left Shift key; and the horizontal Return key (which means I sometimes hit the "#" key by mistake). But the typing experience is good so far.
    5. Okay, so it's not a powerhouse. I bought it knowing that it would be fine for productivity, but not expecting to do anything particularly demanding.
    6. It was a bit laggy on first use. I did a clean install of Windows... and now it's running perfectly.
    7. The sound is okay. It's fine, if not anything special.
So far, I'm happy with my purchase, but these things I would change if I could redesign it for next year:
    - matt screen (!)
    - stiffer hinge
    - slightly better, upward firing speakers
    - keyboard layout
    - an Ethernet port would be nice, rather than the Dongle provided...
    - And a more powerful CPU would be nice. Ideally, a Ryzen CPU with their better integrated graphics would be fab.

I think this is the laptop I need to get. I'm an amateur photographer (nature and wildlife), only take pictures in RAW, and edit them with Capture One Pro. A 17" inch screen is perfect for me, give me more space when editing photos.

Most people don't need XPS, Alienware or MacBook power. These comparisons make no sense. RUclipsr seem to forget that viewers are rarely video producers or heavy gamers. Also, in which part did you mention the battery life? Cause I've lost those numbers. This is a (bad) first impression review...

Comparing the LG Gram to an Alienware gaming laptop is just silly. It needs more room for discrete components and cooling, so it's never going to be as thin as the Gram, and those components will consume exponentially more power, so it can't compete on battery life. Two different laptops with two different purposes aimed at two different demographics. The only thing they have in common is screen size.

Wow this must be the latest review of any product ever. I thought maybe it's a updated version but nope. The old one.
Anyway I like the idea of the laptop as I love 17inch laptops but needs at least ice lake, Ryzen or even better, a comet lake 6 core with 1650 Max q and a much bigger battery.
O jeez or maybe a refresh with the new rumored 7nm Zen 2 Ryzen mobile rumored to land early next year. I would love that.

Same size as a 15.6 with a bigger screen. Keyboard is the same size as a standard keyboard. If they put in a graphics card it would not get 15 hours battery life on full brightness. Macbook 16 is much larger and much much heavier. Has a i7. Not even close to slow.

Karl Aber It uses almost the same internals as gram 13: a U series processor, the same 72 wh battery from the 15 inch. It is justified for it’s thin body, but the size of it makes it kind of not that portable. I personally think the gram 13 makes much more sense than this.

Not from what I'm reading but if you're going to get involved in 4k you need to get real about what you're using stop expecting it from smaller devices

This would be pretty good if it had a really good display and speaker. Would be a non-gaming entertainment beast.
Except it's got a shitty 2k display and tiny unbearable speakers.

Another bad hardware review, done by the same person. Don’t the editors at Engadget care about content quality and what the Engadget brand represents? We already have more than enough forgettable, mediocre content on RUclips. You’ll allow just anyone to do reviews? I’m completely baffled.

Yet another appalling bad review. Not a single benchmark, or a single meaningful comparison. Seriously, go watch literally any tech RUclipsr for a quick primer on how these kinds of reviews should be done. Benchmark the device, and then several similar devices and show us comparison data. Its really not that hard. Its like you're intentionally trying to make the least useful reviews possible.
