agreed. Why don't we have such 16:10 displays in gaming laptops is beyond my understanding. I mean they always have a huge blank bezel on the bottom instead simply because gaming laptops need a lot of space for components such as cooling and a battery. Why not utilize that empty space, getting more screen space for gaming, browsing, office productivity, 4:3 older content and so much more? Just so there would be no bars when you're watching 16:9 TV shows? really? I dream of such screen(including glossy covering with it's vivid colors and better contrast) in a gaming laptop one day.
I second that. I dislike 3:2 screens because the black bars look gigantic when watching videos which really puts me off and reminds me of the old days of TV. However, 16:10 is a sweet spot that I can live with.
My wife has the 13 in and was so impressed I got the 15". Pretty amazing battery life and they have held up very well for 1 years despite people griping about the flex. Expect this will be similarly good.
I’m 17 and I remember deciding what blackberry to get when I was about 8, watching this show! And then again every time I upgraded. It’s great that it’s still going 10 years later! 🙌
This week, I got my LG Gram 17 with the 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD. First impressions: 1. It's light for a 17" laptop, but not crazy light. It's still a laptop. 2. The build quality is good. Reviewers show how flexible it is, but I don't think you'd notice it unless you look for it. The only thing I'd say is that the hinge is not quite as stiff as I would like. If you tried using it on a train or plane, it might bother you. On a desk it is stable. 3. The screen is glossy. (How I wish it was matt!) I got a screen protector to reduce the reflectivity, but I couldn't get it on without air bubbles (which I hate even more), so for now I'm living with the gloss. But it's fantastic having a 17" screen for productivity (and day trading). And it's clear and bright. It's overall a good panel. 4. Keyboard: It's okay, apart from a couple of differences from a standard UK keyboard layout. In particular: the way the "|" key is situated adjoining the Left Shift key; and the horizontal Return key (which means I sometimes hit the "#" key by mistake). But the typing experience is good so far. 5. Okay, so it's not a powerhouse. I bought it knowing that it would be fine for productivity, but not expecting to do anything particularly demanding. 6. It was a bit laggy on first use. I did a clean install of Windows... and now it's running perfectly. 7. The sound is okay. It's fine, if not anything special. So far, I'm happy with my purchase, but these things I would change if I could redesign it for next year: - matt screen (!) - stiffer hinge - slightly better, upward firing speakers - keyboard layout - an Ethernet port would be nice, rather than the Dongle provided... - And a more powerful CPU would be nice. Ideally, a Ryzen CPU with their better integrated graphics would be fab.
I got the model 2018 and according to the documentation of LG, the batteries are compatible. The 2018, 2019 and 2020 uses the same connector for the battery, so we can switch the laptop battery from 60 to 80 wh which is impressive. I will wait until the battery for this model is available to change it.
Great review! So far, Lisa is the only reviewer I've heard *praise* the speakers in this laptop. The poor Gram usually gets made fun of for its speakers. I installed 2016 MacBook Pro speakers in my Gram, and the sound dramatically improved. A little bit of thin foam padding was necessary to prevent vibration of the speakers (the little woofers on them really move that air!)

At 7:20 you stated that RAM slot 2 was not soldered on and could accept up to 32GB for a total of 40GB. I've always been told it was best to match RAM modules, though I have installed unmatched modules in two previous laptops. One ran well, the other struggled. How well does this perform with unmatched modules? Wish the 8GB in slot 1 wasn't soldered on, but at least slot 2 is upgradable.
Really wish they went with a AMD 4800HS, allowed ram to be all upgradable, color accurate 4k screen and max out the battery to 99whr. Maybe make a slightly heavier version and call it the kilo. Don't think it will make such a big difference to weight but would make it significantly more appealing to a much larger group.
5:4 or 4:3 would be ideal if you're not into the whole video watching / editing scene. Personally, I can live with black bars top and bottom on the odd occasion I need to see a vid.
well, 16:10 are great for everything, including video editing. For me editing videos is much more comfy on a 16:10 screen simply because I can see more bars in Sony Vegas having more vertical space. Also much better for browsing, playing games, editing documents and so on. Sadly, such screens are mostly ignored by the manufacturers. If there was a gaming laptop with such a screen I'd like instantly buy it.
@@TabalugaDragon It's the best compromise at the moment - as an all-rounder. But for non-video use it can't hold a candle to old school ratios for sheer usability. I don't edit video so for me, if I want to enjoy a movie etc. I save that for TV but I accept that I'm in the minority here. Still, I'd love to see 4:3 or even 5:4 get another go-around. Hats off to Microsoft for their recent lappies though 🎩
There are people who said it doesn't make any difference if you purchase the i5 or i7 for lg gram as the manufacturer didn't manage to make the laptop perform better with i7 CPU? Do you have any insights in this please?
@@LazyPCRehab I bought the 14Z990 here in India which launched in 2019 and it has Thunderbolt 3. I'm not sure of the models in your country though. 72Wh, but I get 8-10 hours of battery after limiting the charge 80%. It's much bigger than what comparable size ultrabooks offer anyway

@Jon David gaming laptops are for pretty much everything, not just gaming and you know that. I edit videos for example and game, so neither LG gram with it's weak CPU nor Macbook pro with it's mac OS are fitting for me. And 16:10 screens are not THAT much more expensive. I mean come on, they can install OLED panels now but can't make 16:10 ips? I would easily pay 50-100 dollars more to have a 16:10 screen in my laptop instead of a 16:9 one
@@heavyharmonies maybe 100 grams, that's easily worth a 20% boost in battery life imo. That would bring this from average Ultrabook to basically the best.
to me this is a poor laptop that used lousy speaker and can't understand why are they using UHD Graphics on the 14 2in1 instead of Iris plus and there is no touchscreen option for the 15inch model
Anyone tried playing Wolcen on this laptop so far? If it can at least play that level of graphics, it's a stong buy for me so I can play ARPGs on the go.
Got this model at Costco just over three weeks ago for $1200 ($300 off). Worked perfectly until yesterday. I noticed battery had constant 90% charge. When I unplugged power laptop just died. Multiple troubleshooting attempts since then have been useless. Works great on power cord - pull cord and it immediately dies and won't power on. There seems to be no boot-time or Windows-based hardware diagnostics on this model - F11 at boot does nothing. Nothing battery-related in the BIOS setup either. My first guess is something in the battery or charging circuitry has failed, and the 90% charge level is bogus as it never changes. I'll call Costco concierge service but I'm guessing LG support will be a waste of time. I'm not sending it in for service, if they won't ship a replacement first. Sure glad I got it at Costco and it's been less than a month! I'm bummed because I love the screen and weight, but it's no longer on sale - not even listed on Costco's website anymore, so I can't leave a review!

Get this laptop (512GB) from costco. Only 1499. I currently own this guy and keyboard is much improved from last years model! Going by history, this should go on sale for 200-300 off eventually, so down to 1199 or 1299. 3 month return policy and costco gives you an extra year of warranty automatically. Costco visa card doubles that to 2 extra years of warranty automatically. Cant beat it really. I returned last years model after having it for 2 and a half months to get this because 3 month return policy so why not? XD
@@TheHitteam I want to say probably, but can't say for certain. Costco has carried two prior models of this laptop, and both went on sale. Big reason why I expect this current model to also go on sale. If you can wait, then give it another month or two. I had the prior model and was a week and a half away from hitting the 3 month mark so I couldn't wait. I'm hoping for it to go on sale soon so I can get the price difference back.
remarkable laptops in recent times ... VAIO sx14 .. why? because it was red and not just this boring brushed aluminum grey. Is it really so hard to design something that looks a bit nicer and not like something you find in the home of the elderly? Give it colour and design ... Apple did it to PCs and it kickstarted them and set them apart from the crowd. One could do so much today - glass rims, stainless steel frames, chrome accents, Ceramic covers. While the minimalist designs are OK .. i really miss innovation when it comes to making some 1000$ or more machine something remarkable. Laptops are objects that are displayed to the public. I dont care if a PC looks like a garbage can .. but a laptop is something you are seen with when you go out for a coffee or so. edit: yes, i also care what is inside those computers .. but maybe a lot less than all those enthusiasts.

16x10 ratio should be the most common for any computer display. It's a great compromise between productivity use and content delivery.

This with a 99Whr battery would be pretty amazing. Seems like a wasted opportunity given all the free space.
Keep in mind that it would also add to the weight. 80wh is more than most would actually need, given the run time.

No 13 inch model, 14 inch the smallest. But it is really tiny - smaller than the Macbook Air 13.3 from 2018

I have the 13.3 inch LG Gram. I bought mine almost a year ago on Amazon during their sale for $950, but you can get one now for $815.
Get this laptop (512GB) from costco. Only 1499. I currently own this guy and keyboard is much improved from last years model! Going by history, this should go on sale for 200-300 off eventually, so down to 1199 or 1299. 3 month return policy and costco gives you an extra year of warranty automatically. Costco visa card doubles that to 2 extra years of warranty automatically. Cant beat it really. I returned last years model after having it for 2 and a half months to get this because 3 month return policy so why not? XD
You think it will go on sale in the next 90 days if I buy it now? Want to save the extra 200-300 bucks for College books =)
@@TheHitteam I want to say probably, but can't say for certain. Costco has carried two prior models of this laptop, and both went on sale. Big reason why I expect this current model to also go on sale. If you can wait, then give it another month or two. I had the prior model and was a week and a half away from hitting the 3 month mark so I couldn't wait. I'm hoping for it to go on sale soon so I can get the price difference back.

remarkable laptops in recent times ... VAIO sx14 .. why? because it was red and not just this boring brushed aluminum grey. Is it really so hard to design something that looks a bit nicer and not like something you find in the home of the elderly? Give it colour and design ... Apple did it to PCs and it kickstarted them and set them apart from the crowd.
One could do so much today - glass rims, stainless steel frames, chrome accents, Ceramic covers. While the minimalist designs are OK .. i really miss innovation when it comes to making some 1000$ or more machine something remarkable. Laptops are objects that are displayed to the public. I dont care if a PC looks like a garbage can .. but a laptop is something you are seen with when you go out for a coffee or so.
edit: yes, i also care what is inside those computers .. but maybe a lot less than all those enthusiasts.
