    I think the question regarding risk is an interesting one. I am blessed with a wife that understands my passion for two wheels, but we also have talked about the risk. I have told her that if I meet my end on a bike, at least I am something that I love. In the same breath I have also said that I will do all that I can with my education, technology, etc. to be prepared to keep that from happening in as much as I can control it. We all have to define our acceptable level of risk. Really enjoyed this episode, keep it up. Did not agree with everything but it wouldn't be nearly as good of a listen if I did.

    Speaking of improvements. I just bought a 2017 R9T a couple weeks ago; last bike was a 1993 CBR600 F3. The amount of change, not just from the bike standpoint is amazing. Obviously no choke and having to let the bike warm up, ABS, traction control, hydraulic clutch (still no fuel gauge but then that is BMW's fault) and so forth.
    I still had my old Shoei helmet and Joe Rocket riding jacket, not sure why I kept them but just the weight of the helmet compared to an HJC RPHA 70ST I picked up was significant let alone all the venting, easy switch visor, pinlock, MIPS, emergency cheek pad removal... If I wanted air or a non-fogged lens in the Shoei you had to crack the visor, not fun at 30 degrees.
    The improvements in armor flexibility and just overall better quality of riding gear are really impressive. I have spent just a bit more than I should at Revzilla....Now that I'm older though I can afford to not ride around in just jeans and doc martins. AS Andes for cold, Dainese 72 for mid and I'll pick up a mesh for summer.
    Keep up the good work fellas. Any tips for a returning rider? So far its been good, just need to get my confidence back in turns.

    TODAY you can go back to the drawing board and put in a turbo on a bike. They started doing this quite successfully on cars with 1/2 size of an engine or even smaller vs. the ones in the '80s (following the same logic) and reaching high(er) levels of HP with very low fuel consumption.

    As a mechanic I agree with Ari, and no, the whole stuff doesn't necessarily make diagnostics easier for us, often is way more complicated for the shop too.
    Other things to consider are the added expenses for a shop just for pc stuff and programs: and where's a special tool is going to work as well today as in 20 years, a pc program usually is a nightmare in the same amount of time.
    And I'd like to point out that usually you may not really need the specific diagnostic tool on newer bikes.
    So, for the shop is going to be just as if not more frustrating to deal with electronic failures, even because they aren't really going to be jobs that take in money.
    Love the show anyway, keep it up 👍

Ari said it best, he rides to get away from all that. Improving safety features is great, but added tech distractions lessen the riders focus on the ride. Local events are a nice way to meet other fellow riders. You get a good feel for who people are that way.

    This was a great podcast. Some general appreciation and gripes.
    Yes I love the idea of turbos on smaller displacement. I'm sure if you put a 300 too 600cc on a litre bike frame you'd have the space for turbo (if necessitated). I do think you would lose a lot of your weight savings vs a normal smaller displacement bike.

    • @Gismo3333
      @Gismo3333 Год назад +1

      So you think 400cc bikes need the same size turbo as a 15 000cc semi-truck need?
      Never seen a small bike have anywhere near 50 to 80 ton of weight to move. So why not make it smaller.
      People even make bikes with turbos, so not like it is impossible to make. But they make 300-600HP… Because the people making them are insane… And use bikes as a drug. Most people don't need and don't want to pay for bike like that.

    Turbos are far more efficient now than they were in the 80s. I'm legitimately thinking of putting a turbo on my CBR500R. Folks in Thailand have done it and it makes a lot of sense. I get 65 to 70 MPG on the highway but the bike really runs out of power around 7k RPM due to the stock cam and compression ratio. I can deck the head and install performance cams for around 60 whp but I'll lose a lot of that highway fuel efficiency. A turbo sized to deliver boost starting at 6000 RPM will allow me to pull to 10k RPM with about 70 to 75 whp when desired but still maintain that awesome fuel economy while cruising. It will also provide more torque in 6th for bucking the 35 to 45 MPH headwinds that we often have in my area.

    I understand that there isn't a lot of room for a turbo, but wouldn't it be a little easier to fit a turbo on a bike with a single cylinder engine and maybe a slightly larger/revised frame? If it's not a bike designed for the track, it doesn't require the smallest, tightest dimensions possible, right? Just a thought

  • @glsracer
    @glsracer 3 года назад

    For me ABS and Fuel Injection are the best innovations in the last 20 years. I love TFT gauge clusters, 2 of my cars have them but I'm ok with analog gauges. I agree that distractions should be minimized but I don't agree with the trend towards dumbing down vehicles to suit the lowest common denominator. Traction control is fine but I'm not sure it's needed south of the litre bike space.
    I would love to see turbos come back. My primary criteria for vehicle purchases for over 10 years has been turbo and AWD. IMO turbos make a lot of sense for Adventure and Sport Touring bikes.

    They have variable turbos removing the need for twin turbos.

    • @9guile
      @9guile 3 года назад

      Variable vane turbo’s are amazing. Might want to check out the price on those as they’re only in the highest level of gasoline cars, Porsche turbo S comes to mind. The expensive in materials and programming leave variable turbos not feasible in a motorcycle. If you’re thinking about diesels having variable vane turbos that’s correct, but the exhaust gas temperature is a much lower. Thus the expense on the materials is lower due to not having to deal with the extreme heat.
      Variable vane turbos also negate wastegates. Which would simplify the complexity of the build.
      The main question is are they going to have any new cooler or no intercooler? Where is the glowing hot (during heavy acceleration) turbo going to be located?

    ABS, Traction Control... other non race bike rider aids... they're great for the road (and I'll not have another daily rider that doesn't have them), but maybe not so great at the track (unless the brand specifically tuned modes for track use, which I'd look to you guys to tell me).

    I think having car play on touring bikes is far better than previous implementations of navigation. Alot of effort goes into making them simplistic and allows for voice commands. We definitely shouldn't follow cars trends of throwing tablets on dash, far more attention required on bike.
    I believe I saw patent somewhere that suzuki was planning a turbocharged bike.

    Turbos on bikes is a great idea. Itd be a shit ton of R&D but I bet people would buy them even at high costs. Especially younger generations that grew up on fast and furious.

    The use of TFT dashes, comes back to self-control, set the thing to your requirements, then leave it alone. ABS should be fully switchable on one button control all models turn it on for general riding only.

    ABS is most certainly one of the best innovations in motorcycles today. I like what information the new dashes bring to the rider but I'm a huge fan of analog gauges. I'm one of those guys who likes to work on his bike so that would be the drawback to newer electronics, but one can't beat the positives it brings. The one trend that I really don't like is more cosmetic, I hate the lack of a rear fender on most modern bikes

    I would love a small turbo on my n400. Run maybe around 3lbs of boost at maybe 3k. Either hold it there or build it through the rpms. and one could be satisfied on a small bike that way and still keeping low weight and functionality of a small bike compared to a super or hyper bike thats not as nimble or light.
    I think personally Spurg is being irrational with his idea of it, and the potential from a small turboed motorcycle.

    Spurg is wrong about turbos. On the ford EcoBoost it has two turbos on v engine layouts they have one layout per bank, not not two for different rev ranges.
    That being said turbos are still less reliable than na engines. In order to get the full efficiency out of a turbo you need an excellent cooling system and a intercooler. I dont know if that could be implemented on a small motorcycle.

    New tech: It seems the main complaint not mentioned but it seemed like the core of what you're talking about is that as technology on a motorbike becomes more complex you increasingly lack the tools (software) and possibly the expertise to deal with it. What we want is for the manufactures to make the diagnostic software available to the public (for free, or even just a reasonable price).
    TFT dashes: Designers are gonna design. Making something look good does not equal usable. Motorcycle manufactures need to ensure they prioritize function over form. This is a whole area of study and should be taken seriously when designing a motorcycle dash. Marketing should not be giving input in this area unless they also have years of expertise on ux/ui design and prioritizes function.

      ^ Completely agree. Why can’t there be standardization of diagnostic software so we could all only have to buy one diagnostic tool.

      Also I think most airbag controller systems have (constant) updating on the parameters that signify a crash vs a light fall or dropping the jacket. It's gotten a lot smarter, very good for road use. Still a big investment.

    I would just like to say Highside/Lowside is a great way to start my Sunday mornings listening to your motorcycle related banter.
    Regarding the end I would just like to say to Spurg you are totally missing the point. Bruce wants the advantages that a turbo brings and that is not a bad thing.
    More than 50% of cars now have a turbo because they fully recognise the benefits of being to reduce cc, fuel burn and weight by providing boost only when you want/need the extra hp.
    Saying that the CX500 turbo didn’t work is like saying that ABS doesn’t work - the tech has come a long way in that time… you pretty much just said that yourselves.
    You don’t need a whopping great turbo on a small motor, I would argue that a the largest turbo on a twin turbo setup for a 300-400cc motor would be much smaller than the smallest on a car like the RX7 and the smallest one used to remove lag could be tiny.
    Why can’t you have 600 type performance out of a 300-400cc motor by boosting it? We have the tech and the know how now.
    Back in the day of the CX500 turbo even cars had major problems with the turbos just look at the Mitsubishi Cordia/Tredia!
    That didn’t make everyone give up on the idea, they persevered and it improved to the point where it is now hard to find a car without a turbo.
    So I’m with Zack and Bruce on this one, give it a red hot go… maybe it will sell and maybe it won’t but at least try.
    Keep up the great work.

    31:04 of course we all wish you could go out and buy a set of basic tools and that's all you need to work on your bike, but that has never been the case. anything you want to do, even the simplest jobs require something that would only be useful to another motorcyclist. in some cases, only one with your exact bike. just to change my tires, i had to buy two huge wrenches for the axle nut and bolt on the rear, and a set of gigantic allen sockets for the front axle bolt. tools that i highly doubt will be useful for anything else. and my next bike will probably require completely different tools to do that same job.
    so as technology moves forward, so too must the tools. a hundred years from now, an 18 year old might have a plethora of tools that haven't even been invented yet, just to make sure his magnetic drive floating rear wheel is properly aligned when he mounts a new tire. i don't really consider it a bad thing. it's just the way of things.
    50:28 one thing i think is awesome; MSF gives courses on military bases for free. i don't know how good the coverage is, but i know they at least give the basic and advanced courses at Carswell JRB. granted, those courses are only useful for a complete newb, but it's still nice.
    1:06:27 i agree that if they have tried it recently and it didn't work, why not tell us about it? but i also would not ever ever EVER buy a turbocharged motorcycle. not ever. if all you care about is top speed, then sure, go get yourself a turbo and head on over to the drag strip. but if you care about actual performance, for god sake give me natural or supercharged.
