Where do you recruit for HS/LS panel guests? I do all my own maintenance on a couple bikes and just put 1600 miles on a rebuilt bike I previously hit a deer on. My buddy buys ugly bikes and restores them (double digit bike owner). Lots of regular folk out there with experience but not full-time motorcycle journalists have valuable opinions. I personally know a couple bike owners who wouldn't buy any new / "modern" bike, and I imagine manufacturers would be keenly interested in knowing why (I bought a 2013 Triumph Bonneville myself, deciding factor was ease of owner maintenance and availability of free diagnostic / ECU modification software, TuneECU).
Lance: Sorry guys gonna be late in today, got a doctor's appointment Spurge: What's wrong? Can I come? Is it serious? How long have you got? Where's the triple?
Love the High side Low side show, but holy crap you guys have to let someone finish their thought before you start talking. It constantly turns into unintelligible mass of voices..
Lance, I love CommonTread. Thanks. 2019 - I'm buying a HD Livewire with your money. I'm an urban commuter and I loved my test ride on the bike. I'll spend my money on the new Honda CB500X. 2020 - Honda Africa Twin, Fireblade. Triumph Tiger. I can't wait to ride a HD Bronx.
Good choices! The Bronx and for 2021 the 1250custom (which is alleged to be replacing the Sportster after 64 years😔) are what I am looking forward to riding. I want to see what the Revolution motor is going to do for HD. I really want to ride an Indian FTR1200 but the nearest Indian dealership to me is a 5+ hour drive even though there are several Polaris dealerships in the area, none of them sell bikes, but mostly snowmobiles and ATVS/side by sides. Those are the joys of the East coast of Canada lol
Thanks, Marcus. Glad you're enjoying Common Tread. LiveWire would be fun to buy with someone else's money, for sure. Just remember, Spurgeon's the one handing out the blank checks. Don't look my way.
Loved Lance's contributions. Missed Lem's personality:) Show idea- retro modern vs classic bikes. I also hate transformers and would enjoy this conversation.
More Lance. He was a great addition. They need to make the 2021 Yamaha Tracer 900 look like the 2020 Tracer 700. Then I’ll bring a sack of cash to the nearest Yamaha dealership.
I can't believe you didn't come across the Kawasaki ZX25! I know a lot of bike news has to fit the show, but bringing back a 4 cyl. 250 - that's something to watch out for i 2020.
Blank check- a couple years old 250cc MotoGP race bike and track time. Reasonable check- a new Yamaha Tracer 900GT for longer trips, and a V-twin Yamaha Bolt with better handlebars for short trips (or the SCR 950 dual sport- see the great FortNine RUclips video about it). I have a 2002 Honda Shadow 600cc V-twin- it has great engine sound when engine braking at 20 mph, like all V-twins if the exhaust is drilled out with a foot long small diameter drill bit to make it louder, but not too loud.
Lance was a great addition.... I want to see an updated Japanese dual sport in the 400-500cc range. Fuel injected, modern levels of horsepower and not too heavy. I don't need expensive suspension, since that can be easily upgraded for the more aggressive riders. It sounds like I am describing a cheap KTM and thats exactly right. The much awaited KTM 390 adventure is appealing, but it sounds like it will be more road oriented. If they do a 390 Adventure R in a year or two, that might be the ticket.
For the 500 class, you could get the low priced Honda CB500X. Been around for quite a while, so there are a bunch of upgrades. The KTM 390 is very similar to the Honda CB500X. Both are a little more road bias. Similar price for brand new, but you can buy a used CBX for much cheaper.
OK so I got my bike for the list. But first: SR/F- Totally agree. In fact I already have one in my garage. It's friggin' amazing. With my Rizoma bar end mirrors now fitted (from Revzilla of course) it is now perfect. Speed Twin- Wow, This bike caught me by surprise. I wasn't expecting what it delivers. It's "on the list" if I can find some room in my garage. Z-400- I do like smaller bikes but c'mon now. My blank check bike is an MV Agusta Turismo Veloce Lusso with that clever automatic clutch AND an Italian mechanic on call. ----- Significant moves: Indian flat tracker- American making other bikes. Hell yes. How Harley came through our current "retro" phase w/o making a Standard is beyond me. ----- Worst idea of the year: BMW 1800 WTF. Seriously, BMW, no. Just no. ----- What I want: Yes, a detuned liter bike touring machine. For years I had a gen. 1 Concours ZG1000. I would still ride it today if it had modern brakes and a tire size that I could actually get. 900cc would be perfect, 100% "adventure" free sport touring. A Ninja 1000 could be made into this or maybe a GSX-S 750/1000 could, but it needs to be simple and reliable. Shaft drive would be better since messing with a chain on a 3,000 mile tour is a royal PITA. I love my Euro-bikes but try finding a mechanic to look at your Multistrada between Taos and Durango. Simple reliability is #1 in this category.
I think one of the greatest misses for 2019 is that you guys didn't mention the Royal Enfield 650s coming to the us and popularizing an up and coming manufacturer in our market. Still liked your picks though. Interesting episode.
After several decades of racing motocross, I would have serious doubts that electric bikes will make it in that category due to dirt, mud and water as well as severe vibration and G shock, all of which cause serious problems for the battery packs. Obviously you can completely seal the components off from the dirt and water but then you seal the heat in. Electric bikes are great urban commuters and maybe super moto, maybe
In my opinion the best bike of 2019 is the Honda CRF450L. I'd like to thank Honda for producing this amazing machine. It's a dream come true, keep up the good work!
If Spurge is writing the check, I'm either going for a Super Duke GT or I'd go with Lance's choice of a top end Zero SR/F with the extended range battery.
Vulcan S 900 with all the upgrades you'd expect with it to get having a more powerful engine. A sport cruiser like a Japanese Victory Octane or Indian Scout. 4 cylinder 100+ HP sport bike with cruiser comfort.
You can buy aftermarket metal fuel line QDs. I replaced my plastic BMW QDs with a set from Jiffy-Tite and they are fantastic. Well made and no o-rings to replace.
Yeah, I should consider the metal fittings, but I don't know. This bike is old. When I told Lemmy my Speed Triple needed a new rear tire, he replied, "So that means it's totalled, right?"
I really want a Kawasaki Vulcan. One of the most surprising cruisers when it comes to performance. That cruiser life with much better handling and speed seems perfect.
The mx track in my town is older than the neighborhood they built up the hill and we had to build a sound wall and stop pickups/ trailers with bikes to take a different route to the track.. the developers also built high end condos between a railroad crossing and a sewage treatment plant… 😂 BRING BACK KICKSTARTS AND CARBURETORS!!
The 1800 Beemer will be a huge sales success worldwide, in all its varients, especially as a vintage retro, not only as a custom. Mark my words. Remember something called an R9T? Edit it will take a lot of HD sales away in Europe and SE Asia as well. As for the T7, yes its late, but all the XR650, DR650, KLR650 owners and everyone who wants proper dual sport capability inc low weight and simplicity, this bike is a gamechanger. There is nothing like it out there and it is going to make Yamaha a lot of money.
Man, you really have to be partial to the US-made stuff to pick a Zero over an Energica for 2020! With their new 21.5kW battery they're miles ahead of all the other electric motorcycle manufacturers. And they come in 3 flavors - neo-retro (Eva EsseEsse9), naked (Eva Ribelle) and superbike (Ego) - so everybody can be happy.
@@larryj8924 The VFR1200 would like to have a word with you. In all seriousness, I have a 2004 VFR800. Favorite bike ever. If I had to have a cruiser, I would not turn down a Magna, that's for sure. V75, Honda? Dump those silly Shadows already.
Just to note Kawasaki 400s were around in Asia for many years (I own a 2015 one). Maybe aftermarket doesn't trickle to the US that much but they have been quite popular around here in Asia
I like Lance too but the main reason I watch these videos is because I trust Lemmy's opinions and enjoy his commentary. Of course, we need to keep Spurge around to remind us HD and Indian riders of why we don't wave at sport bike riders. And is Spurge putting on weight or what?
I'd make the argument that the r18 concept is actually for a new younger demographic with disposable income that wants a cruiser but also wants German engineering, and a more modern minimalist take on a classic American style that doesn't put them in the same category as a 50 yr old Indian rider. It strikes me as more of a statement piece that the cafe/bobber crowd would splurge on and bring to a distinguished gentleman's ride in a James Dean replica jacket.
Good episode !! The HD FXRG was a small step ,clip ons. Street 750 almost a naked standard. Buell doesn't count ? Market wasn't ready. I know some articles written about the mid 90's racing program point to the motor being the basis for the V-Rod but in the early 80's when Harley was barely breathing they were designing two motors Evolution and with Porsche help a V4 ( I've seen pictures) the powers that be could only afford one and it had to be a home run. Hence the Evo motor. The cases on the V4 looked identical to the VRod. Wonder if they still have the 4 drawings somewhere. I think people forget how small Harley is compared to a lot of the other companies. Ducati-Audi , BMW , Kawasaki ,Honda even Polaris is 10x larger. Triumph might compare but they're privately held. KTM?
One use for electric motorcycles that I’ve yet to hear mentioned was for touring through nat’l parks/ nature reserves. Makes for far more wildlife encounters as they don’t know you’re approaching. I realized this once after Driving through Angeles nat’l forest in my brothers hybrid.
There are LOTS of people who will buy the R18. There has been a slew of marketing studies showing that people are willing to put down 25K$ for a BMW cruiser, instead of a HD or Indian. No doubt. It is not meant to be a Marketing Development tool. It is meant to be a spear to the heart of the American motorcycle market.
bike with your money--I agree with Lance, but Energica would be my pick...or maybe an ARCH???? I am excited to see how the Honda does in WSBK. You gents are fantastic (even without the long-bearded-wonder-child). Just figure out a way to make shipping to Canada free please. Love the pod, love commontread, and awkwardly love you lads as well. Cheers.
Indian I4 would be real interesting, but would have to be done right to compete with the Goldwing. I wonder if it would be more appealing to Polaris if they could use the same motor in some of their other products like Razors or boats.
I'm so drawn to the speed twin like Joe. It checks almost all the boxes, but I agree with Spurge. The Suspension needs an upgrade for 100kg riders. Spending the extra to put Thruxton Ohlins could be worth the cash.
@Joe: husqvarna has started prototype testing on the norden! there are photos of testers with the bike in disguise; Lance is a nice addition to the show, time to upgrade from a trio to a quartet!
Beyond 2020- definitely want to see Indian and HD expand their lineup to any/everything not a cruiser. I want to see American company’s be real contenders like the Japanese bikes.
Hey guys great “whatever this is”. Lance brought a lot to the table. Joes mention of the Tiger 900 peaked my interest as I own a 19 XCa 800. Joe would you upgrade to the 900? Same question to Spurge.
You’re absolutely right concerning tough choices these days. I went for the Triumph because of the “it” factor for me. Thanks guys for bringing a diverse and interesting take on our sport. 👍🏼
I walked into a dealership and the guy recommended a Ninja 400 or the Ninja 650 as my first bike. However, I disliked the exhaust and didn't understand motorcycle at all. I instead went with the Honda CBR650F (2106 model) uhhhh. I hated that bike - I mean it was great the first season and I learned a lot, but after that year, I wanted it no more.
DCT wasn’t too surprising. Gold Wings sell to older buyers primarily. Older riders are more inclined to want an automatic that is more like their cars. And the world in general is moving to more automation. Look at self-driving cars for example. I think it is unfortunate, but then I am one of the older folks who still drives a stick shift car and really doesn’t like automatics.
We have seen the fuel injected 2-stroke dirt bikes have been around for a while now, what I really want to see some big manufacturer do the same as the small VINS company and develop a multi cylinder 2 stroke sport bike or naked bike would be awesome.
I hope one of the Japanese 4 will make a 450-500cc supermoto/dualsport pair with a low maintenance engine, fuel injection, wide ratio 6 speed transmission for high torque in 1st gear and low rpms on highway in 6th gear, weight under 300 lbs and not a high performance bike to keep cost low. Would a bike like that be too niche? I think the industry does, thats why they dont make them
I would love to see kawasaki make a z650rs only because the 900rs is quite expensive and id love to have the twin sound. Also Triumph needs to take the street triple engine and stuff it into a speed twin chassis and make it a monoshock (Bring back the thunderbird sport please)
That one came totally out of left field. Especially considering Lance flung some poo at BMW though for doing nearly the same thing earlier in the video. But for some reason, I don't disagree. The problem is getting the Board to approve a totally different engine.
Cool to see Lance strut his stuff lol Can the 3rd guest (after Lemmy rides off into the sunset after season 2) be a rotation through Zilla staff/contributors? Let's get Andy Greaser on the mic, he seems like a cool hang This is maybe a dumb suggestion but it'd be hilarious if "contributors" included top commenters like the venerable Von Piglet. Let's see if he is up to chops when he isn't behind a keyboard haha
Man.... Giving Piglet a microphone is either an amazing idea or a horrible one... That could go either way. I appreciate your input, Dave! I think Lance crushed it and I would love to get him on some more in 2020. In addition to Lance, we have a couple more tricks up of sleeve! Thanks for watching, reading, and offering some solid feedback!
In New England, late season doesn't exist for me. I'll be out on New Years, unless there is a foot of snow. Spent 16 months in Georgia. Down jackets at 50 degrees Fahrenheit? One snow fall of 1/2" that lasted six hours and they shutdown schools? Don't worry. Originally from Minnesota, these New Englanders aren't pioneer types either. I've drove in the Alps in January. In Minnesota, -30 just means longjohns as you take your ice bike out to the lakes.
Indian's new FTR bike is like the 1970s Harley XLCR. A cafe' racer at that time was unheard of by Harley. It did not sell well, but try to buy one now....
VFR for 2020, bring back the chain drive cams ditch the vTech. Make the 1991'ish version for 2020. I had 187000 miles when i sold it, regrettably sold it because i was young and power hungry. I got older and wiser and found out i dont need 160HP to really enjoy riding. To each their own, i enjoyed my time drag racing but now i just want to tour in comfort and in sporty fashion without turning to gold wing, yuck! Too much unnecessary tech bloating prices on those.
I'll throw one out there. If I could buy any new bike. It would be a Honda CT125. I don't like any motorcycle built after monoshocks. My dream dirt bike is a Penton Mint 400 and my dream road bike is a Norton Manx; neither of which most of you know.
I’d slap my money on the sales desk all day, everyday on the any of the 60’s-70’s throw backs. They don’t have the Star Wars look👍. Super easy to work on/maintenance 👍. Most are far less expensive 👍👍👍. The downside is the suspension, it’s not going to be a race bike but 80+% of sport bike buyers never see an actual track with it.
You find me a bike that sounds and feels as good as an HD and I'd be all for it. By sound I mean that old school rumble I just dont like the "tuned" sound of everything these days
Spurgeon is very good in his new role . Rather interesting show ( for those who are crazy about bikes ). One thing is still shocking , even for America - coming on a set not shaved . … !!??
Would love to see 790 size sport touring bikes with larger fuel tanks and cruise control for about $10k. Yamaha 900 GT is too much, Versus 650 not enough, BMW and KTM are expensive. P. S. Your mics are distracting.
I think he's getting more and more comfortable every time. I also think someone may have asked him to give it a little more umph. Be yourself, Joe, and you got this. You're a smart dude, have great opinions, and you know your shnit. Be the Joe.
I'm not talking about the tank. I'm talking about that Rally tower with crash protection up high. That's a decent amount of weight added up high compared to the KTM.

Triumph 765 Flat Tracker / Scrambler!
Triumph needs a replacement for the Thunderbird - not available in Australia or most other countries anymore..
bike with your money--I agree with Lance, but Energica would be my pick...or maybe an ARCH????
Bring Lemmy back....but keep Lance on!!!! What a dude!!!!
Bradley Alexander I’ll let you know after I ride one! Keep an eye out for the review coming out around the end of February!
You’re absolutely right concerning tough choices these days. I went for the Triumph because of the “it” factor for me. Thanks guys for bringing a diverse and interesting take on our sport. 👍🏼
I'd love to get that BMW and build a custom from it I do love the boxer engine for stripped down old school looking custom bikes
Also Triumph needs to take the street triple engine and stuff it into a speed twin chassis and make it a monoshock (Bring back the thunderbird sport please)
agree with lance on the indian 4!
That one came totally out of left field. Especially considering Lance flung some poo at BMW though for doing nearly the same thing earlier in the video.
But for some reason, I don't disagree. The problem is getting the Board to approve a totally different engine.
Husky Norden just got greenlit. Spurgeon must be so happy right now 😋
Heavy sigh....
Was that pun intended?

Lance's Indian design idea is a good one.
Reliable old school designs are definately in demand.
Style hasn't necessarily improved.
Cool to see Lance strut his stuff lol
Can the 3rd guest (after Lemmy rides off into the sunset after season 2) be a rotation through Zilla staff/contributors?
Let's get Andy Greaser on the mic, he seems like a cool hang
This is maybe a dumb suggestion but it'd be hilarious if "contributors" included top commenters like the venerable Von Piglet.
Good group for this discussion. Spurge might want to let folks finish their sentences.
I’m excited to see Kawasaki ZX25R
Absolutely love my Z400 as well. I'm still riding this late in the season (Ga-USA) cause it's so much fun.
LOVE THE IDEA OF THE INDIAN FOUR....LOOK AT THE TRIUMPH ROCKET III....ID BUY THE INDIAN...OWNED GOLDWINGS FOR OVER 30 YRS..
I enjoyed that show. But. What are the best and worst motorcycles of 2019?
Why doesn’t Yamaha bring the SP versions of the MT-09 and MT-10 to the U.S.? The same reason the Tenere 700 isn’t here yet.
Triumph Rocket 3. Was impressive for 2020
I’d slap my money on the sales desk all day, everyday on the any of the 60’s-70’s throw backs. They don’t have the Star Wars look👍. Super easy to work on/maintenance 👍. Most are far less expensive 👍👍👍. The downside is the suspension, it’s not going to be a race bike but 80+% of sport bike buyers never see an actual track with it.
I want Honda to put out a new NT/Deauville/Varadaro based on the Africa Twin platform.
Blank cheque would of been a Harley Livewire. Nearly even spent my own money on that! Can I have some of yours?
best one for me for 2020 would be zx25r.
Indian 4 would be great to see, but damn how expensive would it be? The price point would make or break an Indian 4
I would want an ST1300PA.
Oh wait, I already have one and I ride it daily!
Why are people still hung up on HD? It's always boggled my mind.
You find me a bike that sounds and feels as good as an HD and I'd be all for it. By sound I mean that old school rumble I just dont like the "tuned" sound of everything these days
I think the lockers in the background take a little away from the audio.
Sorry, Lance, I can't let it go: adding a 3rd R to the 2 Rs that were already there (on the CBR100RR) would be, "now with 50% more Rs", not 33% .
CBR1000RR is three Rs. CBR1000RR-R is four. 33 percent more Rs. I'm counting the first R, as well.
*facepalm* Of course! cbR. Duh.
Yes, Indian absolutely pulled a bait and switch with the FTR.
Spurgeon is very good in his new role . Rather interesting show ( for those who are crazy about bikes ). One thing is still shocking , even for America - coming on a set not shaved . … !!??
When are we going to get a follow up to the CSC?
I've assigned Joe to work on that.
To be clear, it will be in an article form.
I would have to go with the Kawasaki H2 or the new Yamaha MT 10
I would be highly interested in an Indian 4
Tenere 700 if it’s 2019 and my money. Pani v4 Speciale if it’s free money 2019.
Streetfighter V4s if it’s 2020... your money or mine.
Would love to see 790 size sport touring bikes with larger fuel tanks and cruise control for about $10k. Yamaha 900 GT is too much, Versus 650 not enough, BMW and KTM are expensive.
P. S. Your mics are distracting.
Its been a while since I watched one of these, good to see the bearded buy loosened up a bit haha. He used to be much reserved and serious
I think he's getting more and more comfortable every time. I also think someone may have asked him to give it a little more umph. Be yourself, Joe, and you got this. You're a smart dude, have great opinions, and you know your shnit. Be the Joe.
I just wonder if Spurgeon knows that that Husky has the same petrol tank location as a recent KTM's do? It might look top heavy, but it isn't.
I'm not talking about the tank. I'm talking about that Rally tower with crash protection up high. That's a decent amount of weight added up high compared to the KTM.
@@SpurgeonDunbar Oh ok, so you know, I can sleep tight now ;)
I really enjoy this show - even when I disagree with certain takes.
Moto guzzi v85tt... hands down!
Interesting content but try not to talk over one another
