  • Jade Bonsai ~ Portulacaria Afra Bonsai Branch Refinement
When you trim a bonsai you stimulate re-growth, so regular timing will create more dese growth and allow you to shape the tree and create ramification which is the development of the fine secondary and tertiary branches which gives a bonsai the fine delicate branch structure that ultimately makes it look like a real old mature tree. Today I will be doing the first prune of my new Jade Bonsai to remove some of the longest branches. As we are coming into winter I don't want to do too much work as the tree will not be actively growing and so may not recover from too much pruning. So in the springtime, I will be back to do some more pruning for shape and structure.

You never showed how your smaller Portulacaria are doing. What is going on with those?

Hey Andy! Just found this playlist and it is really helping me starting my first Bonsai. I wonder if there's going to be a new update soon. I'd love to also see some kind of schedule or bonsai timeline just to have a perspective of how long each phase of the process should take.
    Thanks for the great content!

You made the right decision to purchase it. It's a beautiful specimen. Wonderful trunk movement and great secondary branch potential to create nice pads. Even has a good nebari. Good luck with it.

Thank you! Sometimes you just have to be spontanious! I passed on a Chinese Elm this size about ten years ago that was even cheap, it would have been an inpressive specimine by now, I can still see it in my mind! So now I don't pass up the chance if I see a good tree. Thanks for your comment, I'm glad you like it too. :-)

We don’t find many larger plants like this one in the typical plant store in the U.S. A full spectrum grow light will help it a lot during the winter.
These plants grow as a huge bush in South Africa so their branches tend to go in all different directions if left to their own devices. They are a bush so they naturally want to grow as such.
Someone did a good job of putting a nice bend in that trunk when it was younger. That can be tricky since wiring a succulent can leave marks if not done properly. That is a major bend so they had to work on it a bit to get it to do that without harming the surface of the trunk. They have such soft trunks.
It does need some serous trimming but I would wait until spring to do it. It is basically set as far as the trunk goes. Now all you have to do is manage the growth of the branches. Once you get it trimmed back it is going to look nice.

Thanks so much for the videos about the little jade plant. Do you have an update on this one and the small one you started with? It's been two years, and I'm anxious to see the progress.

Mr. Mouse, isn't it fun learning about bonsai's? Yes but only up to a point. Well, what do you mean? Andy made secondary and tertiary cuts on the branches to make the tree fuller and I started getting scared because it reminded me of Seven of Nine on Star Trek and how she was tertiary adjunct of unimatrix 01 and I had to close my eyes and quit watching I was so scared! Oh Mr. Mouse that's so funny! WAIT! Did you say Borg?! [You will be assimilated] 🏃‍♀️(((((( [Resistance is futile!] Wait! Wait for me! 🐀🐾🐾🐾🐾

If it’s in the sun you need to water regularly, you can check the soil to see how dry it is, when it dries out a little you need to water again. These grow quite quickly normally so if it’s not then something is not right. Maybe it needs some fertiliser.

@@HouseplantHacks yes I put it directly in the sun. So I need to watering them if the soil is completely dry is it?. I thought I should water them every 2 weeks or a months like other succulent bcs that was what I did. Does crossby compact is also the same? I really need your explanation and help bcs I've been asking anywhere and didn't get any answer

Mr. Mouse, what do you think of the little tree? Do you think Andy would mind if I built a treehouse in it? What? Why? Well right in the middle it looks like you could build a treehouse there with the little window and... No Mr. Mouse. Well it's just sitting there- this way it would be functional. Oh boy. Oh boy is right just think a treehouse! Geez. Did you say cheese? Yes Mr. Mouse, here. Thank you! 😊🧀🐀

    Hello fellow plant guy,
I've following along with this series of the elephant bush and I heard you mention that your plant doesn't grow during the winter.
The elephant bush I have is huge and it grows all year long, I've actually had mine flower for me and that was during the winter.
The flowers are small but they have a shade of pink I've never seen before. I would like to send you a picture of my plant but I don't know how to do it through the RUclips comments.
If you comment back with an email address I'll send it there or if you have an Instagram send me that info and I'll send it there.
I'm getting ready to cut some of the mature branches from my plant to start a bonsai.
    Great video very informative 💚🌱

Hey Joey, I would love to see some pictures, hit me up on Insta - @HouseplantHacks and send me a DM. I'm in the UK and our winters can get cold so being sub-tropical plants they slow right down and go dormant in the colder months, if you live somewhere warmer you can probably get growth all year round. :-)

He leaves too many handle bar branches which will cause swelling and reverse tapering.

No swelling as yet a few years on, but thanks for the tip, it's due a prune in the spring so I will bear this in mind.
