Portulacaria afra (pronounced por-tew-luh-KAR-ee-uh AF-ruh) is commonly known as Elephant Bush or Elephant Food Plant. Native to South Africa and used to feed elephants in their natural habitat, hence the name Elephant Bush. It forms up to 80% of an elephant's diet. In fact, they can eat up to 400 pounds of leaves per day.
Several Portulacaria afra varieties exist. Elephant Bush plants can grow tree-like, making them popular among bonsai tree growers. Some are naturally occurring. However, some are actually bred in cultivation.
Portulacaria afra is commonly mistaken for a Jade plant. Therefore, often referred to as Dwarf Jade, Mini Jade, Baby Jade, Small Leaf Jade, Chinese Jade Plant. Even though Portulacaria afra closely resembles Jade Plants, they actually are not related at all.
Let’s review 13 Portulacaria afra varieties.
Portulacaria Afra
The most common Portulacaria afra has emerald green leaves. In fact, with some sun exposure, leaf edges are tinged with red. Additionally, stems are initially light green and darken to reddish-brown to brown as they mature.
Portulacaria afra grows 6-8 feet (1.8-2.4 meters) tall and spreads indefinitely. In fact in their natural habitat they can grow as high as 20 feet (6 meters) tall. Definitely great in succulent arrangements as they add height and texture. Additionally, they can be used as a hedge when pruned back.
Portulacaria afra ‘Variegata’ (Variegated Elephant Bush)
Variegated Elephant Bush are quite similar to Portulacaria Afra. However, tiny leaves are variegated with cream and light green stripes. Additionally, pink highlights can appear on the leaf edges with increased sunlight. Leaf color varies with new growth and color shades are influenced by the time of the year, water and fertilizer.
Their reddish-brown stems in these are also more pronounced. In fact, they tend to grow laterally as opposed to upright like Portulacaria Afra.
As with many variegated varieties, they grow a bit slower than their non-variegated forms. Also, like most variegated versions they do not tolerate as much light. Indeed common in cultivation and a great container plant or as ground cover.
Also known as: Variegated Portulacaria afra, Portulacaria afra ‘Foliis variegatus’, Portulacaria afra foliis variegatis, Portulacaria afra f. Variegata, Portulacaria afra f. foliis flavo-variegatis, Portulacaria Variegata

Great video! Just a note: 5:17 Portulacaria afra Bonsai - I don't think this is an actual variation, just a very old elephant bush that has been fertilized for many years
Yes, you are correct. Bonsai is technically not a different variety. Thanks for stopping by.

Thanks dear!
Great overview and I love Portulacaria. I wish someone would try to create more variation on the leaf forms and not just colour variations. Cheers!
I totally agree! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video! I love the Aurea; it seems to grow as fast as the normal variety, but looks great with the gold tips.
I agree with you on the Pink Variegata - I'm going to find one somewhere!
I love that your Aurea is growing just as fast! You must be doing everything right!
@@moodyblooms to tell the truth, I'm trying to get them to grow as fast as I can. I'm going to make them into bonsai, and I've been feeding them like mad! Thanks for your reply and happy growing! 😊
Awesome! Bonsai trees look amazing 💚🌳💚
@@moodyblooms these Portulacaria make nice ones too. And seeing I should have started growing bonsai 40 years ago, the quick growth means I can hopefully get some reasonable ones without having to wait for ever!
Yep they are great for bonsai! I’m excited for you!!🙂
Hello Moody Blooms, Just watched your video and I really enjoyed listening to your very informative video. I heard you mention that the tricolor pink is a wish-list plant for you, and I would be happy to share it with you by sending a cutting.
Wow! Thanks so much Nate! I would love that. Send me an email at bloomsmoody@gmail.com to coordinate.
Hi Mary Ellen, I don't mean to be argumentative but they are actually related to Crassula. They are in the same plant family Crasulaceae. But they are not the same species.
Thanks!
Thanks for this video! I was curious what is the difference between the variegata pink and just variegata? I couldn’t find much info online.
Portulacaria afra f. Variegata Pink is def more rare and has more pronounced pink color. It is also more rare than the standard variegated elephant bush. The variegata tips will show signs of pink with stress of sun or cold. Hope that helps!
Thanks for the information on this lovely plant. I just bought a tiny pot of Portulacaria “Kaleidoscope” but it looks exactly like Afra Medio Picta. Do you happen to know if they are similar? Thanks for your lovely videos!
Hi Tara! Yes that is another name for the same plant. Thanks so much for watching. Hope you are having a great weekend.
you missed the cork bark is named "frank yee" after the creator of it. the rainbow variety with the heavy variegation that grows lots of full moon/all white leafs. different from the one rainbow you named. also the new "candy" portulcaria. thats chemical induced i think. its just now reaching the us markets. its been in asia for a year or 2. probably was not available anywhere in western countries when you made this video. they just started to be sold in cali and florida ive seen the last month or 2. great break down tho
Thanks for the additional info Mike! I appreciate it. Yes, I have heard about the "Candy" variety, but did not know it was chemically induced. Thanks for stopping by!
Hi .. do you happen to have any of the Lilliput variety for sale ? I am in the UK 🤞🤞
No, sorry. I don't sell succulents. It is a lovely variety tho!!
Great! Can I repost your all videos to the platform named Gan Jing World, which is full of clean valuable videos?
No, not at this time.
I have grown the variegated portulacaria before. I don’t think I’ll be able to grow a hedge of them here, but it is amazing the sizes they can reach in their native environment.
Thanks for watching!
@@moodyblooms 🙂🐘🌿
What nutrients do they like in their native habitat ?
Good question... I actually don't know. My guess would be some nitrogen.
0:23 and 0:30 are Indian elephants with the smaller ears.. we don't have them in S.A. thank you for the video though❤️
Thanks for the info. I hope you are having a lovely day! :)
@@moodyblooms lovely video, very helpful thank you. Just got one for Spring starting here. 😁 We call it "Spekboom".
Yes! That is also another name for it. 😀
Hi,
I have a portulacaria afra variegata pink(tricolour) and no matter what i do, it seems to be dying. I'm not over watering it. Please tell me how to save it and how i should look after it. Many many thanks ❤
It needs to be in well draining soil, and only water when the soil is dry.
@@moodyblooms Thank you...❤
Of course! Hope it’s doing better 💚🌳💚
Where can one find the Rare varieties? I want that pink one!
I know isn't she gorgeous!? Have you checked smaller nurseries in your area? Maybe even call around and see if they carry.
Or always check on Etsy!
Its not called portulacaria afra "bonsai" . . . But what variety? Obviously one that grows tall. Could i get a ssp name?
You are correct. It is just the portulacaria afra grown as a bonsai, so technically not a variety, but a different way of growing it.
🇲🇨🌏👍👍👍👍🍀
Thanks
Why talk about portulcaria afra a African plant and show Asian elephants mostly ( Indian elephant) making out were dummy's then .get you facts straight you try to lead me a stray no chance sonshine😂
You are correct. I have the wrong elephants pictured. Definitely my mistake and I was in too much of a hurry. Sorry to have upset you Lee.
I apologize that she says portulcaria is mistaken for crassula ovata I don't think people are that thick film makers straying from the truth again saying people don't know what they really do know😂
I get a lot of questions if this is in fact a jade plant or a Crassula plant. I’m not straying from the truth in any way shape or form. I love plants and I love caring for them. I have learned some things through trial and error and thought I’d share. In no way am I trying to be dishonest or stray from the truth Lee. I am sorry to have upset you so much. I hope you have a beautiful day. 💚
It really is mistaken for the Crassula though. I initially bought a crassula ovata thinking it was a P. Afra. I am now growing both of them
@@googleboy7530 Thanks for your comment! I really appreciate it. You, are correct, they are commonly confused with one another. Happy growing! :)
@@moodyblooms I call them Pafra Trees now 😆 it helps a lot!
Yeah, I completely agree. It is confused by a lot of people! I regularly let people know what they think is a jade is in fact an elephant bush. Not every one is versed in the two and they don’t know what they don’t know. We all start somewhere!😊
Portulacaria PYGMAEA - Портулакария карликовая, Портулакария Пигмея, Церария, Ceraria.
Очень редкий вид!
