This guy changed a new leaf not because he wanted to,it was because he had to.Before he was attacked,he literally said, “not happy ,fight” . How is this acceptable compared to the attackers. Then only when karma hit him back, he got into the hospital did he change. Lol not sure why some of the comments treat this guy like a hero for ‘changing’ . Its karma.
Who didn't make mistakes before? You mean to say we aren't allow to redeem ourselves from our mistakes? Have some sympathy and be kind to others, otherwise "karma" will strike upon you as well.

Could he have said something very nasty, discriminatory or racist to the gang? Why would a group set upon one person for no special reasons?

Gangsters are usually insecure, there was once a gang leader threatened a man in public and yelled at him, then the guy he was yelling at lost his patience and struck him, he almost fell over and took him quite a while to get his bearings, and the rest of his group (Most of them big men mind you) had to outnumber the other guy to properly beat him up.
The gang mentality and protocol. It does not matter if the person they set upon is right or innocent or simply just happen to be there. If one strike the rest follow.
