A lot of players were stars and even superstars, but Yao Ming could've been the biggest global star ever. He still is, but imagine Yao with a championship...
Thanks,@@sanchiko2342, although I was referring to *population* size. (What would _geographical_ size have to do it making someone a huge star? After all, this doesn’t give Canadians much of a boost on the world stage, does it…)
@jimreadey4837 fair enough! I agree with your point here and I think he just said it referring to how big China is from geographical view, but like you said it doesn't really matter if market for basketball there was small. Russia is the biggest country in the world but basketball market isn't comparable to China's but to be fair russian teams are way better. As a young kid remembering when Yao Ming was drafted. The buzz on him was huge because I remember how the NBA was expanding it's basketball market to China (China is the NBA's biggest consumer). Many Chinese and Asians bought tickets to Rockets games to see the big man play. I still remember watching the first Yao vs Shaq game, and the game lived up to the hype. It was sad seeing injuries derail Yao's career. Even though Yao had a short career imo. It was cool watching him play even though I never got to see him play in person (Jeremy Lin too).
Lots of other big men had several injuries also that ended their nba career. Greg Odom is one such guy who comes to mind right now. I still remember the game Yao blocked 3 of Shaq's shots in a row and Shaq wasn't used to that. LOL.And Shaq couldn't muscle or move yao around like other centers, nor bully him either. And yes Shaq was a big bully when he played in the nba.
@user-be7tc2bd6e funny that you mention Greg Oden because I watched him play in high school with Mike Conley. I even saw Eric Gordon play against MJ's sons too.
I don't think ppl that have never seen Yao play could understand him the man was closer to 8ft then 7 and yes while he was a finesse type of player one of the many joys of watching him young and healthy was those little spurts when he would play to his size cusz nobody was gonna guard him in the low post dude would take a dribble near the rim lift his arm and dunk it 😂 incredible
Not saying he wasn't good. But he rode the wave of China. They got him voted number 1 and got him into the playoffs. If it wasn't for them he'd still b in China
