Why can't the Zonai from TotK and the Zonai from BotW be the same people? We know that the Zonai seen in TotK "descended" from the sky, so what if the Zonai as described in BotW "ascended" from the depths? Environment can play a huge part in physical characteristics and we know that there were Zonai on the surface AND depths. Maybe the Zonai didn't originally have tails, but due to generations spent mining in the depths some developed tails akin to the Ancient Hero's Aspect to aid them in traversing the difficult terrain there. Or they all had tails originally and those that remained on the surface lost them over centuries because they didn't need them anymore. Perhaps the Zonai on the surface are mostly peaceful because the surface IS mostly peaceful and the Zonai from the depths are more barbaric and warlike because of how difficult the environment of the depths are. They had Constructs in the time of Rauru, sure, but how long were they mining Zonite from the depths before they developed them? What if they only developed Constructs because all the Zonai from the depths were suddenly wiped out? Another possibility is that they're the same species just different races.
Rinkuto had that theory that the Zonai culture was preserved by Barbarians (maybe half human, half Zonai) and worked with the Sheikah to train the Ancient Hero. That's why you can see Sheikah tech in the labyrinths and in Zonai ruins. Sheikah and Barbarians lived in harmony in Faron Woods, having bananas as a sign of peace, where it grows in abundance. However, some Sheikah became Yiga, and murder them all (almost). Some Barbarians fled to the Lurelin Village. If you notice, they all have blue eyes... like Link. I personally think Rauru and Mineru aren't the only Zonai. They may have been the only ones on land with such a power, but in the future, we know, thanks to the Ancient Hero, that the Zonai were present during the Sheikah era. Maybe Goddesses nerfed the Zonai by forbidding the access to Secret Stones to avoid such a calamity again
the ancient hero armor you get after all the shrines depict the half hylian half zonai hero seen in the tapestry. maybe after all the full zonai were gone, their technology was lost so their descendants became the war like tribe (and they made a mud like concrete to cover the original zonai ruins).
I personally believe these so called “barbarians” were ancient hylians that turned savage after the death of Rauru. So in other words, you have a split between the hylians. One which continued Rauru’s kingdom (Royal Family), and the other who settled in the Faron Region, calling themselves Zonai. These human Zonai would build Typhlo Ruins, the Great Thundra Plateu and build over Zonai Runis in Faron. It is also possible this human Zonai tribe are the descendants of “over seas invaders” mentioned in Creating a Champion. These ancient human Zonai would eventually descend into the people of Lurilin Village
Or rather before Rauru's Reign. In is hinted that before the Zonai arrived Hyrule was at this point overrun by demons, so probably the Barbarians were a warior Tribe living in "anarchy" or something Because a former Kingdom fell Because of Demons
Love seeing the connections made between the old ruins/sky ruins being discussed and the idea that the Lurelins could be descendants of the Hylians that built over the ruins. I always attributed the swirl pattern to resembling secret stones however, which can both enforce the idea that the Zonai built the Farron ruins, but can also enforce the idea that Hylians took inspiration from the Zonai and their stones when rebuilding over them. And the barbarians being precursors to both species seems like a firm idea to me. Perhaps the barbarians were 'pacified' into the Hylian people when the Zonai descended... or maybe the barbarian tribes were just a different people altogether who lived in the land.
The tribe which existed at their height perished long, long ago, before Rauru's era, something that Ganondorf tells Rauru during the Hyrule Castle scene. With Rauru and Mineru's death, the Zonai Tribe presumably ceased to exist for good. We still have no clue what the Ancient Hero is but he is not a pure Zonai, that's for sure.

I love how everything we thought we knew about the Zonai from BOTW was just plain wrong. Now we know all those "Zonai" ruins, were actually built by ancient Hylians, who worshipped the Zonai. My question is, were the servants of the springs part of those ancient Hylians, or were they Zonai, or hybrid descendants of Rauru n Sonia? What's crazy is at all 3 places where you get the charged set pieces, there is a tall dragon "tower". They look the exact same as all the others save for 1 huge detail. On the mouth part of the 3 towers, the "Zonai ruins" have started to crack and crumble away, revealing part of a structure that looks much more similar to the actual Zonai architecture we see up on the sky islands. It even has the lil gold "writing/symbols" that much of the other actual Zonai stuff has. It's as if the ancient Hylians covered up what original structure was there. What was it exactly, and why was it covered? Edit: so there is a original dragon head statue on Dragonhead isle? I am so there. It's been my life mission to map out every instance of Zonai/"Zonai" architecture, and conpare them. Try n learn their secrets.
How would this fit into my Unified Timeline AU... After the Spirit Tracks vanished, Cia started the Temporal Conflict known as the War Ages. Countless iterations, segments occurred, only concluding when Cia survived the War, and Ganondorf cheated his defeat by casting off his physical form(Hyrule Warriors Wind Waker Expansion). Regardless, the land had been ravaged by the Temporal Winds of the conflict, New and Old Hyrule becoming indistinguishable by the lands of other times overwriting the current world. Only the Gerudo Desert was untouched by environmental transformation, whilst Hyrule fell into decline, eventually regressing into the Warlike Barbarians, their history and culture tainted by the War of Ages. Although the Gerudo numbers were smaller, they maintained a rivalry with the Barbarian Tribe for generations, as did the other races. The Gorons fled the conflict, seeking shelter within Gorondia. The Zora, restored by the War of Ages, fled the continent, founding Yona's country, forging an alliance with the sea with Rito of the colder Hebra region, untouched by the war as well. The Shiekah, meanwhile, devoted themselves to the preservation of Hyrule's history. Then the Stormwind Ark descended, the Zonai's first foray into the surface after millions of years since they first emerged from the Depths. Attaining a good relationship with the Rito, the Zonai occupied Hyrule, conquering the Barbarian Tribe and bringing about a more peaceful age, slowly but surely reestablishing Hyrule once more. The Gerudo once struggled in the Desert. Though many welcomed the Peace brought about by the Zonai, and the opportunity to grow into a less militaristic culture, Ganondorf was the exception. He knew the stories of the Gerudo conflicts with the Barbarian Tribe. His people were fatigued by life's struggles, whilst his ego was only fed by it. This was my biggest problem with TOTK, at least from what i know, the community wanted to know about the Barbarians that used ancient magic, not the Alien goat people.
We know who the Zonai are now! Spoiler alert! It's not the barbarians like we all once thought! Zonai are the goat dragon furry people like Mineru and TotK's incarnation of Rauru. They are in no way barbaric or savage at all. The barbarians are more likely associated with the Lomei given how barbaric and savage they are compared to the more technologically advanced and much intellectually civilized Zonai. It is however though, likely that they might've had a primitive history, hence the existence of dragons like Dinraal, Naydra, and Farosh. However, it is likely there may have been a defection within the pre-historic Zonai that explains dragons like Volvagia being a threat to Hyrule. Though, I do believe the Zonai have always been peaceful intuitive folk who became more intellectual overtime. It's likely that some ancient pre-historic Zonai defected over to the side of a demonic dragon like Majora, serving as the Ganon of their time because they didn't like the change shift over to the more intellectual and civilized lifestyle. They wanted to remain wild and free to live intuitively. So they chose to align with the Lomei, the demon reptilian boar folk. I believe that there were humans before the Hylians who revered the three sacred folk as gods. The Angelic Owl-like Satori - Wisdom - Commonly Associated Animal - Owl The Nephalem Dragonic Zonai - Courage - Commonly Associated Animal - Dragon The Demonic Lizal-Boar Lomei - Power - Commonly Associated Animal - Boar These human people who worshiped those races are who I believe are the ones responsible for the barbarian armor. However, those would be the ones who worshiped the Lomei, not the Zonai! Look of their helms! The skulls of those helms are more demonic than dragonic like. It is also important to note that Master Works was made well before Tears of the Kingdom even started development. The Zonai we ended up getting wasn't even in mind yet. One of the reasons why Nintendo needs to start taking the story and lore of Hyrule more seriously by prioritizing the story in development when developing games. I get that the gameplay is important, but they should at least have some idea of the story approach before developing the game. The series lore has been retconned sometimes I've lost count. Zonai being one of these things that were retconned because that's what happens why story and lore aren't prioritized in development. Just look at what happened to the Wise Men from ALttP's backstory! They were replaced with sages later because Nintendo didn't know that they would end up changing them because the Wise Men were basically just a throw in at the time because they couldn't think of what else to call or do with them at the time.
