This is the theme for the final dungeon of the game, when Link storms Lorule Castle. You may have noticed how the theme keeps adding in different instruments with each loop. The music in the dungeon actually changes and becomes more complex as you progress deeper into the castle, and the transition between each version of the loop is breathtakingly seamless. Zelda games like to experiment with subtle changes in music depending on what area you're in, and it's one of my favorite things about their soundtracks. Dynamic music in general is such a cool thing video games get to do that not many other mediums can accomplish.

      @whisped8145 Год назад +1

I first noticed this "music adding more channels by how you progress in a level" in Mario64 in the first water-level, with the sunken ship and giant eel, for it is really obvious in that level. It is extremely tranquil as you start on the shore and there is only this giant "open grotto" lets say, and the flat water sparkling. The further you progress the more lively and wondrous the music gets as you discover all the more life in the depths of the water. I still have the melody in my head.

  • @celadore

What's great about this song is that Lorule is basically a darker mirror/parallel reality to Hyrule and this is actually reflected in the music; specifically there are portions of this song that, when played backwards, are actually the old SNES Hyrule castle theme.
Also, this is from a 3DS game. That handheld died before it's time.

Quick recap: This is a progressive song. The more you advance in the castle, the more it progresses, so you'll hear the first minute at the start, the second minute after unlocking some rooms, and the last minute when you're about to get into the actual boss.
Funny clue: At the start of melodies like in the 0:35 second of the original video, you may hear some weird melodies on the background. In the lore, Lorule is kinda the opposite of what Hyrule is, hence why the inverted triforce. So guess what the weird melodies actually are.
Honorable mention: You may recognize a little something on future reactions, that is even present in this song. That something is called "the Ganon leitmotif". Whenever you hear it, it means business.

I think Koji Kondo hasn't been the main composer for the Zelda series in a very long time? I think occasionally he might compose a song or two or something but I could be wrong. I think Ocarina of Time in 98 was the last Zelda game he was the sole composer for. Majora's Mask was mostly him except for a track or two but since then there have been a variety of composers I think.
ALBW's soundtrack is definitely more on the side of mostly arrangements of Kondo's compositions though so you're not wrong. It's going on all in on being a sequel of sorts to ALTTP and reuses a lot of themes from that game. Lorule Castle is mostly an original composition but features two Kondo themes, Ganon's theme which appears in the last two phases before the loop and the Hyrule Castle theme which is hidden in the background and playing in reverse.

This game is a sequel to A Link to the Past and it recreates a lot of the world and feel of that game. In a lot of ways it's very referential to ALttP and the soundtrack is one of those things. Many of ALBW's tracks are modernized versions of old songs from SNES, so I think you actually may be onto something with that Jesse. This song in particular is its own theme but still uses pieces of Hyrule Castle's theme from ALttP/earlier in this game. It's more for thematic reasons in this case, I'd say.

This is the final dungeon of the game, but has a quartet of minibosses that you must defeat to move on. Each time you defeat a miniboss, that is when the music starts getting more and more bombastic by the time you reach the boss door.

Honestly, it's really cool hearing the perspective of someone who *doesn't* have the full context, piecing things together just based on the music and logo. 'Tis indeed a game of opposites! It's also a different take (like a remake, but not quite) on The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (the third main Zelda game, back on the SNES), which *was* all Koji Kondo. A lot of this game's soundtrack is remixes of that game's music, but there are certainly original compositions too!
The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes also has all its music done by Ryo Nagamatsu, and while I haven't heard very much of its soundtrack (which I need to fix), I imagine it's closer to Ryo's own personal style, given that that game isn't an almost-remake of anything.

13:30 Gameboy tracks were relatively often a bit simpler due to the limitations of the tech and being mixed for the handheld-speakers as not every player was expected to put on headphones for better sound. The Secret of Mana tracks you listened to are good examples of that (definitely listen to the original version of "Fear of the Heavens", the intro theme - there's so many orchestras who didn't understand what is essential to adapt it right, no matter how obvious, ...) regarding music adapted down for older technology to still sound great.
One of my favourite Zelda-Themes however is the one for Skyward Sword, especially in the short little form of "Ballad of the Goddess - Finale" which plays after the credits roll, the amazing piece you should hear right before for more impact.

Zelda music in general is pretty great, and I love the soundtrack of this game. Later games, such as Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild, have fully orchestrated soundtracks - SS was one of the first games to do that, as far as I'm aware (I think ALBW came out after SS, but it was released on the 3DS, whereas SS was released for the Wii and later again for the Switch). Music itself is often important within the game itself, many Links play instruments, as do some Zeldas.
A pretty amazing thing this series does is "repurpose" older themes to give them a different meaning. Lorule Castle is Hyrule Castle backwards. Hilda's Theme is Zelda's Lullaby, but mirrored (upside-down). Ballad of the Goddess is Zelda's Lullaby backwards.
Fun fact: Many of this serie's iconic tunes were created due to technical limitations.

So this theme is basically a double remix, the main melody is the iconic "Hyrule Castle" theme reversed (as Lorule is a dark twisted version of Hyrule, basically an alternate universe where everything went wrong) the second theme is "Ganons theme" wich starts bleeding into the transitions at the end (basically the theme of the main villain for most of the series)...
these two songs often get combined oddly enough, as ganon takes over the castle multiple times throughout the games.
Id maybe suggest listening to "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess"s version of the "Hyrule Castle theme" as its the more typical melody slowly progressing into "Ganons Theme".
"The Breath of The Wild" Version of the "Hyrule Castle Theme" is also great but its less of a remix and moreso a new song with elements of the before mentioned two songs...

Since you asked about the game, I thought I'd fill in what I remember! (it has been years though so feel free to take it with a grain of salt)
Despite Zelda being such a long running series, very few games in it can be considered true sequels to any other game in it. This is one of those rare games in the series though, being a 3DS sequel to 1991's A Link to the Past (the third Zelda game!) on the Super Nintendo. And you'd think it would be reasonable that, given that this is a sequel to a beloved, incredibly innovative game after nearly two decades, they'd make a very safe sequel. That couldn't be further from the truth though, this game has such a radically new design philosophy that had never really been attempted in the Zelda series in its two decades of existence: the whole game is truly designed to be tackled in any order that you want. This is truer in this game than any other Zelda game at the time, since typically at least some progress is gated in the form of item locks, but in this game all the key items are available to be rented in the very beginning of the game (this would later be the basis for Breath of the Wild's design as well).
The return to 2D Zelda for the first time in a decade could have been so easy to play safe, but I'm glad they instead used the opportunity to get used to innovating on the central design philosophy of the series, and perfectly set themselves up for their later success in 2017's Breath of the Wild

My favourite of the top-down Zeldas - And while I usually just go '2d' when I mean 'top down,' for Between Worlds I'm not sure it would work with a 2d top-down camera due to the mechanic where you can become part of the walls and move along them.
This is the music of the final dungeon, so plays during the leadup to the final boss, and as others mentioned it's an interactive piece so you're unlikely to actually hear it like this in the game - I believe each of the segments within it loops and then it transitions from segment to segment as you go deeper into the dungeon (Which is great, it just means that there's no real way of capturing how the music sound in any given playthrough in an OST, official or fanmade, just to approximate how it might sound in a hypothetical one, be that one loop before transitioning segments, two loops, or something else (it also means that it's likely to transition mid-segment during an actual game)
You mentioned that a lot of Zelda music has single note melodies. And while some of that is because the first 4 Zelda titles were on 8 and 16 bit systems (with three of them being on 8 bit systems - The NES and Gameboy), and that set a lot of the franchise's musical identity, but some of it is because Ocarina of Time - the first 3d title in the franchise - gave Link a magical musical instrument, where the player inputs the first few notes of, some of which get referenced a lot. And while the fast travel songs are 'Link playing the melody of a song written for another arrangement' a lot of those songs are solo ocarina pieces, where the introductory notes of it don't have a full scale, but instead have five notes to play with because of UX considerations - Both The Song of Time, and Zelda's Lullaby in particular are hugely important songs to the franchise that get referenced in most Zelda titles at this point, and both were introduced in this way - Short melodies where the player inputs the first couple of bars of to activate a gameplay effect whenever they want to activate that effect.
For this title, specifically, though? It's got very deep roots in A Link to the Past - The project originated as a remake of it before expanding its scope to being a new game - so even with full creative freedom the composer may have wanted to capture more of the game the project originated as a remake of and wind up being a new game instead.

It's worth noting that this was the last mainline game before Breath of the Wild came out and reinvented the wheel. The main melody of this particular song is a reversed version of the classic Hyrule Castle theme. In Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, the soundtracks are largely ambient, throwing away the notion of catchy melodies in favour of pure atmosphere. When there are catchy melodies, most of them are completely original and sound somewhat unique compared to past games while still feeling like Zelda. There are a few exceptions, like Rito Village is a rearrangement of Dragon Roost Island from Wind Waker, but what you were talking about with Nintendo's strictness did not hold true after this.

It wouldn't surprise me if Nintendo gave some requirement like that. Yasunori Mitsuda, legendary game composer for the likes of Chrono Trigger and Xenogears, composed the music for Mario Party 1. So many of his compositions for that game were rejected by Nintendo that he refused to return to compose for any of the Mario Party sequels.
With that said, I don't really think this sounds QUITE like Koji Kondo. The impression I've always gotten from this song is that it sounds like Grant Kirkhope's style, a very bouncy sound.
