    The Astral Observatory is actually one of the earliest places you go to in the game. With its surreal imagery and isolated feel that the observatory has, the music accompanies it beautifully. It's one of the most peaceful areas in the game, but there's a telescope at the top pointed right at the moon, always reminding you of the circumstances you're in. It has this peaceful yet melancholy vibe, like you said it gives the idea that "time is running out," but in this location you are just watching it from a distance. This is just one of those video game locations that sticks out a ton, and I still find myself sitting there soaking in the atmosphere even on replay. It's a relatively simple piece but it has a lot of emotional complexity in my eyes

    10:47 - "lush and bright, and just all over the place" - Majora's Mask's world is mostly pretty vibrant, actually! It reflects the rest of the game, honestly - superficially cheerful, with a lot of depresssing and desperate shit hidden just beneath the surface.
    While MM is (correctly) described as being pretty dark for a Zelda game, it's not really the kind of "dark" you might be envisioning. It's less "grim and edgy" (for lack of a better phrase) and more... well, filled with a submerged but still obvious tone of anxiety and sadness. More concretely, a lot of the game revolves around how the characters go about their lives with the knowledge that they're probably all going to die in an apocalypse in three days. Some are in denial, some are placidly accepting (after all, what can they do?), but everyone feels it to some extent. Grief is a central theme, in terms of both people grappling with their impending deaths and people dealing with regular-ass losses of others in their lives. (Throughout the game, you get the power to transform into three main different humanoids; they're all heavily implied or outright stated to give you the forms of specific recently dead people, which leads to some poignant and mildly uncomfortable interactions.)
    Ultimately, MM stuck in my mind largely for two reasons. One is all the stuff I mentioned above. Its world feels less like a setting for an epic adventure and more like a down-to-earth, tonally realistic/relatable depiction of a world where things are pretty fucked. The second is just that it handles all this with (IMO) a surprisingly delicate touch. There are a lot of games with great worlds and great stories, but most of them are a lot more direct and bombastic. MM is one of the relatively few video games that I'd say is genuinely subtle in its approach.
    (hopefully that didn't sound too rambly or pretentious but man I really just like this game)

      You caught that really well, but there is one thing that needs to be added in my oppinion.
      In this game, you help so many people to find their peace with the upcoming apocalypse or you even "save" their world from a local "mini-apocalypse". And in order to complete the game (without a guide of course) you need to do that over and over again to unlock everything. This leaves you helpless with the feeling, that all you do is for nothing somehow. Until the point you end the game and shut it down forever in the end title, you are forcing the people to run through their sorrow again and again by resetting the time. All the help you have granted to release them from their grief will be wiped out soon after. But you are also forced to do that in order to save the world in the end. This emotional dilemma is haunting me since I'm a child.

    • @jtnachos16
      @jtnachos16 2 года назад +6

      I wouldn't call it 'grim and edgy' either. If anything I'd just call it HEAVY. There's a weight to it, owing to the time-limit and the very explicit results of failing. The fading of optimism from the people, the looming of the end, etc.
      It feels STRESSFUL. Which, really, is what that situation would be. Link is basically the ONLY one who has a clue what is going on, let alone the skills/tools to even try to stop it. He has all that weight of responsibility on his shoulders, and it is communicated in a way that it had never been prior, or since, really.

    • @VelvetAura
      @VelvetAura 2 года назад +6

      That's one of the reasons I'd really look forward to Jesse playing it. MM is one of those where it can lull you in with that exterior, but the game is just dark enough in some areas to where it just feels off. The game IS dark, but not outwardly. That's one of the many things I love about it.

    • @GeekMasterGames
      @GeekMasterGames 2 года назад +4

      If I had to describe Majora's Mask's tone in one phrase, it would be "Tragedy masked by melancholy." The game is full of hidden layers of loss and pain and depression, but it is not hopeless or colorless. Happiness is there, too.

  • @Mijiroth

    In game, this theme kinda hits like a truck cause you reach this place through a dark sewer system that has mostly ambient noise and then you get to this bright place with this music and it's such a mood whiplash. It's also overall such a stark departure from the rest of the game, which makes it memorable.
    Another song I would like to recommend is the Stone Tower Temple Theme and the Deku Palace Theme. God I love this game. I remember very vividly when it came out and how much it freaked me out... and how much people disliked it cause they all wanted Ocarina of Time 2.0 which is your very basic hero's journey kinda story. While this one is just counter to that, with no happy ending, really. A game like this will not happen again.

    It makes me so happy to see Jesse notice all the little dissonant parts in Majora's Mask songs. Koji Kondo really helped make this one of the most unsettling games of all time. Even in an otherwise beautiful and chill song, it never lets you feel completely comfortable.

  • @suicunesolsan
    @suicunesolsan 2 года назад +35

    Majora's Mask is an eerie game, but it is the dichotomy of darkness and light that makes it less "edgy" and more solemn. Sure, make no mistake, there's plenty of dark, evil monsters in other Zelda games, as villains to heroically vanquish. But here in Majora's Mask, that darkness becomes part of you as an ever omnipresent comfort. Majora's Mask also introduced world-building mechanics that are now considered ahead of their time, but weren't appreciated then. As for this track, it plays in a very specific place that the player doesn't spend much time in, but nonetheless makes an impression. It's interesting, maybe even upsetting, that one's interpretation of game music changes when listened to out of context. Like listening to a Stradivarius on a street curb. If you ever do another game playthrough, I should hope one day it'll be a Zelda title.

  • @SNMG7664

    Majora's Mask is really interesting as a game because it's essentially a horror game with a bright cheerful skin on top. It doesn't scare you with blood or guts like a lot of modern games, it is just deeply *deeply* uncomfortable the entire time, incredibly bleak, even the happy moments are not really very cheerful, only really happy in contrast to the rest of the game.
    It deals with some pretty heavy topics and really only gets away with them because it's so brightly coloured, every so often the creepy unsettling nature seeps through in the art or music. Its negative reception at the time was in large part down to it being structured entirely differently to every other game in the series, and the experience of playing it just being constant stress rather than the sense of cheerful and childlike wonder the rest of the series up to that point gave off.

  • @Mrinsecure

    This whimsical but melancholic song is very appropriate for what Majora's Mask is: a game that is, down in its core, about people struggling with grief in various ways. It's still bright and colorful, but there are undertones of something tragic, a loss that cannot be adequately explained by the people suffering it. And in the end, the only thing you can do for them is try to find a way to keep moving on, even though it feels like the world is ending.

    so the astral observatory is this small area you only really need to go to once, and its an observatory thats run by this kindly older man that lets the local children use his home as a hideout. you go there to get a closer look at the looming threat, grab a thing, and then go back to figure out how to face of against said threat, and it basically is only relevant in your first loop. wich sort of runs like a tutorial on the concept of the looping and while you get familiar with the town. the song is quite short probably because you are only there for a very short while.

    One of the more dark pieces is the Mayor's Meeting, it has this sort of " panicked vibe " while not being too overbearing. You should give it a listen.

  • @IzzySarru

    I dunno if you'll read this, Jesse, but the main issues people had with this game when it came out aren't actually related to the weird tone. The general consensus among people who didn't/don't like the game, from what I've seen, is that they don't care of the 3-day system or that the meat of the game is the side-quests. The main quest is actually incredibly short. There are only four dungeons. This coming after Ocarina of Time, which had 9 and two mini-dungeons.
    It's a game that requires good time- management and planning, as well as being observant of the daily lives of the townspeople.

    MM is still probably the most "mature" Zelda game, though a surprising number of Zelda games manage to hit some heavy content now and again (especially Wind Waker). Its voice rings more true the older you get, the more loss you experience, the more futility settles into your bones as you witness and experience injustice after injustice, your every victory temporary, your solace momentary, your kindnesses forgotten in time.
    Majora's Mask is an exercise in defeating nihilism, in forgiving friends who have lost their way and hurt you, in accepting mortality, loss, grief. The Song of Healing heals wounds of the soul, not of the flesh. This game taught young kids some very serious things, maybe for the first time, and it captivated us.

    An interesting sound design element with this song in the game. You enter this area through the sewers which has a very creepy atmospheric sound and there is no door, just a hallway that transitions from one area to the next. The result is that one song fades out and the other fades in as you head in with the two briefly overlapping. This makes it a little more creepy and gives it a slightly concerning sweetness when compared to the very subdued sounds that it is taking over from. Also there is a chicken that is clucking the entire time.

    I feel that majoras mask is such an interesting game to look at in concept, people always talk about how creepy it is, but in concept it really is a genius game, every side quest has personality to it, as you get to see how different people act as the time progresses, how they react to the basically hopeless situation they find themselves in, yet its still inspiring. The side quests make this game, but even the main plot is pretty deep, we can't travel through time like link can, we can't change the past, all we can do is learn from our pasts. Its such a deep game, every character has a meaningful personality and morals, its such a fascinating game, that people still remember to this day for how unique it is. Games like this, and flower sun and rain, bugsnax, heck conkers bad fur day, games that really do something different and are able to convey some really deep ideals even in games that you would never expect to see them in, is one way that art really shines in my opinion, subverting expectations but still speaking to the player in a crazy way.

    Majora's Mask wasn't the first dark Zelda game. Link's Awakening has _lots_ of darker themes, and I'd say it gets darker than MM by the end.

    • @VelvetAura
      @VelvetAura 5 месяцев назад

      It wasn't the FIRST but when you consider how hard Koizumi had to work in order to sneak the darkness into the story, I'd say MM easily has it beat. Don't get me wrong, in concept it's similarly dark to MM, but the execution is entirely different between the two games. I happen to prefer the slow burn of Awakening in some cases, but then the game kinda drops it on you all at once and it feels incredibly sudden to me. I think that's part of why I enjoy the way MM does it more.

  • @olivia7782
    @olivia7782 Месяц назад

    Other commenters have prob already said this, but when people call it the "darkest" Zelda, they're not really doing it justice. Like, they arent /entirely/ wrong, but the vibe of the game is kinda more complicated than that? It's sorta surreal and melancholy and weird and bittersweet while all still very much being "a zelda" if that makes sense. It CAN be creepy and definitely has a fundemental focus on death as a theme, but it's not pitch black and is ultimately pretty hopeful in its ethos when you get right down to it. Tonally it's kinda like Ocarina of Time but with a weirdly human edge to it (as compared to something like Twilight Princess, which is overtly going for Dark and Mature)
    I'm... not explaining this very well but its a very strange game
