Who Me, Apart from John Wick, Mission Impossible, Bond and stuff from Hong Kong, They are all cheaply made CGI garbage fests. If your going to do Cheap CGI at least do it how Robert Rodrigez does it where the CGI is seamless. Current action films just don't have the balls on them anymore. I like the stuff David Leitch does but out side of the things I mentioned, that's my hot take. What more of my film opinions check out the Zedoes Gang film Podcast (Now not active but the archive is still up) Or The Creative Control podcast which we do weekly.
Whats funny is your using John which as a benchmark of the Man from nowhere cliche I take it youve not seen Desperado, A Fist Full of Dollers where this trope was done before John Wick right? Speaking of The Man from Nowhete maybe check that out it's awsome.
in my opinion, john wick worked so well for a number of reasons, but id say the main 2 is the world/ lore of the JW universe, and of course, the authentic and creative action scenes,, though i will admit, JW4 was a little much imo.
yea i got tired of John Wick at midway thru the 3rd movie, the more they explore the lore and world it becomes less mysterious and intriguing, and Keanu can only kick so much ass before it becomes repetitive
The real reason john wick worked because we do have a personal reason to watch the vilain being forced by john to eat dust for dinner(the dog is way too cute)
Genuinely want to know, what's your take on modern action movies? 👀

John Wick is a genuinely great action franchise. But yeah, it can get a bit much at times.
