Yeah, I know that Jessica Chastain’s character is Vuk. In my breakdown of Act One I said that I was going to pretend that the aliens are the Hellfire Club because that is who were in an earlier version of the script.

The Mystique complaint better fits Apocalypse where her story didn’t have the same depth as it did in First Class and Days of Future Past. With this movie, my complaints regarding Mystique are more related to how she is acting like Charles has developed an ego to rival Tony Stark’s despite him being pretty reasonable in the film with several of her criticisms being undermined by other things in the movie (like her saying the women always save the men despite the space mission literally being a group effort). Ok, back to the video.

it is clear that Simon was aware of the mistakes that he did not want to repeat this time. It is valuable and enjoyable to find a balance in your analysis of good achievements and mistakes in the film. I knew I was not wrong to see so many parallels to the comics and to clarify that the judgments of people when saying "Jean is not the protagonist" are wrong and are the result of the collective imagination (cognitive bias). It is great to also see how you dissect each segment, there is a clear evolution from the beginning until now. I am looking forward to the analysis of act 3, do not take long! I beg you! By the way, each video adds more details that make me see it again with new perspectives. (For example, connections with First Class - DOFP) Congratulations on your amazing work on this project! And awesome use of the BATMAN scene. Until the next time! Take care!

Ok so I just finished and you did a pretty good job breaking this movie down and I do kind of want to go back and reevaluate how I feel about Jean. However, I honestly feel like the subplots of the film really drag it down. Like I said in another comment, the movie puts a lot of emphasis on how Charles is to blame for everything that has gone wrong even though he did none of it out of malicious intent. It’s not like the characters later apologize to Charles or anything later either. The film ends with him having left his school with Beast as the new headmaster as if we had to agree that Charles must be held at fault for everything, despite Hank having contributed to the problems too as he tried to murder Jean earlier in the movie, which is also at odds with him at first blaming Charles for Mystique’s death.
Meanwhile Magneto’s role in the film is almost a complete rehash of his arc in the last movie where he is a retired monster only for a personal tragedy to send him right back to try and hurt others. By this point I think audiences were kind of tired of Charles and Erik’s dynamic and this film didn’t do much to help matters.
You mentioned that this subplot was meant to keep the second act from slowing down, but I think another problem at hand was that after Charles talks Jean down, she gets taken out of commission leaving the third act to mostly be the fight between the X-Men and the D’bari at which point everyone kind of just sets aside their differences with Hank and Magneto not being called out for their attempted murders. It felt like such a poorly written way to convey drama that it felt hard to be invested in what was going on. Lest we forget that Jean was still unconscious, which I think added to people’s belief that she ultimately got sidelined by the film.
Eventually Charles wakes her up at which point she takes out the rest of the D’bari and then heroically sacrifices herself as if to clean up as many loose ends as fast as possible even though there’s no way the X-Men wouldn’t get rearrested for everything that just took place across the film.
The whole thing just felt like a waste of a perfectly good plot.
