1st again baby😂😂😂
He's doing a Steve Reich thing and just moving up a 16th note with the groove. Stays in 4/4 though
U can see Why Coleman is a number one fan of Vinnie .
What makes guys like Vinnie exciting is that you just know he can break into anything he wants at any given moment. He can keep the pulse in 4/4 with a simple pocket groove or burn down the house with mind-blowing licks and fills. The man ain't right I tell ya.
That what Vinnie does to you...makes you speechless. Vinnie can shred all day like the modern days Instagram drummers, that's child's play to him. It what he leaves out and his insane pockets and musical interpretation that sets him way above most drummers you ever feature. His ability to make odd time signatures sound like 4/4 is incredible. He can move '1' around with ease and in a blink, it's back where it should be. And lets not mention his sight reading, which is off the scale! Probably the top 1% of drummers in the world without question.
Vinnie is a legend
Vinnie is phenomenal Josh, I have witnessed him live in so many different setups and his versatility is staggering. For me he is the most influential drummer of his generation, just as Steve Gadd was 🙏❤️
Certainly one of the best all-time. I put Weckl in there as well even though Dave pretty much sticks to one genre these days. Then there are sickos like Virgil Donati, etc to contend with. Weckl has played other genres earlier on, a la, Paul Simon, Madonna, etc. It's mind-boggling how good these guys are.
Vinnie...'Mr Metronome'. Those beat misplacements...so cool and worth much more than loads of predictable shredding.
The shredding definitely gets old. Although the only guy that doesn't is Eric Moore.
i saw explanation of this time signature and Mr Vinnie told that it’s just 4/4
you are not the only one @ 3:44 ooh my, but it was soooo sweet with the placement.
When I first heard this, I gave up counting too.
3:06 Robert de niro in Cape fear
Started drumming when I was about 16. All I ever heard then was Weckl and Vinnie. To see their relevance til this day…wow nothing short of amazing! Remember when i first heard tweaked😂 i literally lost my sh🗣️t! Lol
The weird grove starts as 'money beat (boom chak boom chak) for 1 measure; start of 2nd measure the snare starts on the "ah" of 2 displacing 1/16th note => starts on the 'and' then switches between the 'and' and 'e' until it resolves back to 'normal' time. If ypu check out Gary Chafee's books you'll see where Vinnie's ideas come from...
Vinny and Dave Weckl were my idols back in 80's. Vinny's down ward angled tom position, allow me to get around that kit with tremendous speed and accuracy while using the traditional grip. Great video Josh!!
Weckl's been my fave for over 35 years. Vinnie is there as well.
It's all in 4/4! The whole song. In the main loop section he's just moving where the bass drum and snare drum boom-bap starts/stops, moving it to different places, all based on 16th notes; we just hear it as if it's a new downbeat because we're so used to hearing music that has downbeat/upbeat as the pulse. The concept is actually easier to play than it is to hear.
Definitely, I was hearing the same thing!
They actually interviewed him a few years back he said himself he was throwing 11/16 and 13/16 accents into the breakdown which at that time was insane.
What does it matter - 4/4 or 2218/17 - Vinnie can do it all. ;-)
Its a 4/4 but in an interview vinnie himself says he threw 13/16 and 11/16 accents into the breakdown.
Vinnie is one of, if not the greatest drummers to ever live.
Technically time signature doesn’t change at all. The band stays in 4/4 and Vinnie cuts a 16th note off of the groove 4 different times, and chooses 4 different beats of the 4/4 to cut each time.
When you cut/remove a 16th note from a measure of 4/4 it becomes 7/8.
It becomes 15/16.
Yeah this is a classic Modern Drummer Festival Performance.. The story behind the song is that he was fooling around with a James Brown loop and dropped a 32nd beat in a measure and laughed because no one would be able to dance to that.. He gives the whole story in his interview on the DVD. He drops or leaves a 32nd off the measure but while he's doing it the rest of the band stays in 4. Drummers do it all the time in church.. It's called taking the back beat, but it's still all in 4. He's just not doing it in the same spot every time he's mixing it up, making it hard to follow.
I tried dancing to this in 2007 and broke a hip.
Vinnie Collaiuta the best ever.
Vinnie's an alien.
Vinnie the greatest Drummer all the Time
Oh man that pocket was so deep at the beginning geesh!
That snare head is so tight they may have to call in the bomb squad.
Old school doc!
Joshua, at 3:38, this is Vinnie (the alien) showing you a taste of time displacement. Vinnie, according to the best drummers in the world--is the best drummer to ever play.
🔥🔥🔥💯💯
The best
This is sick starting for the 3:30 mark. I think they go from 19/16 phrased as (4/4 +3/16) to 27/16 phrased as (6/4 +3/16) to 23/16 phrased as(5/4 + 3/16) to 7/16 phrased as (1/4+ 3/16)😂😂. Is this some form of security code🤔
It depends which part you are listening to!. If you are listening to what vinnie is doing then that will be the time signature breakdown I thing. But if you are listening to the guitars and melodic stuff then you are correct they maintain a 4/4 steady groove there
@@Orielgeniuscloud I remember seeing an interview of Vinnie saying it’s all in 4/4
@@ulo yea true!! All is in 4/4 but he phrased it into odd groupings
Yo..u know ur good when you play in work boots...4real!
Nasty bro
Vinnie... still the best imo
At this point if you watch Josh and aren't subscribed I have to question all your life's decisions.
Yo, he was locked from the jump.
React to Jaylan Ward!!!
Just dropping 8th note !! (Displacement) ?? 🔥🔥
That single roll with flams just nasty 🤦🏻
He was using triggers bro!! Check his setup!!

Me gusta mucho más la versión que le hizo Benny Greb 🇲🇽 saludos
Hate to say it, that whole segment is in 4/4
Benny greb did a noice "tribute" to this with his meinl video..
Can’t believe you lost count!
