No one has the feel of Weckl, NO ONE. Vinnie is one of the greatest of all time. Gadd is one of a kind.

This is what happens when you don't understand the meaning of something. The show was meant to be that way, Vinie and Weckl were brought to throw the chops, and Mr Gadd was there to play the groove. That's his thing. There are a few other things that you should take into consideration. That concert was in the 90's , we didn't have youtube where you could find tons of drummers just showing off their chops, if you wanted to see guys like that playing, you had either to buy a cassette, or go to a concert, so since people wasn't used to see things like that all the time, whenever they see it was especial.

The grip originated with slung drums that were angled. It’s called traditional grip

I mean what do you expect when you are watching a "drum showdown"
All these guys played on plenty of legendary records. If you just want to listen to music, you could have chosen something they played on.

This was an adlib solo with them trading 4's over the steve gadd cowbell Latin groove. It's not rehearsed in any form.

Steve Gadd is the grooviest drummer of all time. If you check out the video "Clinic in Los Angeles" you'll see. The graininess of the video makes it even better.

The shows a tribute to Buddy Rich so there’s gonna have to be chops lol

If you listen closely, Vinnie Coliauta is taking Dave Weckls ideas and phrasing and playing off of them with his own phrasing. They are talking to each other

No offense, but when you said that they weren't hitting on beat one; you were a beat behind. You were counting beat one, as opposed to their beat two.

I don't think you really understood what you were watching. This show was a tribute to Buddy Rich. If you watch some Buddy Rich videos and then watch this again I think you'll find they were paying homage to him. All three of these guys can groove with the best drummers you can name. Also, they were not off beat at all. Your count was.

They groove like an animals! Check them out individual solo projects or with another artists. Colaiuta with Frank Zappa, Sting, Jeff Beck etc etc etc. Gadd with Petrucciani or with Al di Meoa. Weckl with Chick Corea or Mike Stern. Obviously this is a show off with their chops but...

Hey. Awesome seeing you watching fantastic drummers like them, some of my personal favorite youtube videos of god tier drummers like them are Gergo Borlai - ruclips.net/video/UcNGcXrJImg/видео.html and Eloy Casagrande currently of Sepultura is probably the best metal drummer of his generation - ruclips.net/video/dQe3EwkPcFU/видео.html thank you guys for bringing joy and musical wisdom to the world. cheers from Iceland.

this is definitely the kind of thing that you watch and go "hot damn those dudes got mad skills" and geek out over... but as impressive as it is, there's no emotional hook that makes me want to blast it in my car when I'm driving to the shops... dig? =)

@@marylandstationmusic9422 F.e: I dont like rap in general...but I would never say: Busta Rhimes/Chris Brown/Snoop rap battle is average or sucks.. That's just lame, man. In most of the cases bad musicians pick on the good ones. Also, this was a drumm show honoring Buddy Rich, virtuoso from 40s, 50s on drums. That implies 1000 drum fills per second, NO FEELING or smoothness. It is ment to be like that.
