HAD THIS ON VHS!! my drum teacher at the time borrowed it and stretched the hell out of it trying to learn the solos. ruined it couldnt watch it again. its been over 20 years since iv seen this again!!! thank you soo much!!!!! WOOOOOOHOOOO!
yes he is. so much musicality and melody. notice how there is always a context and a direction in every musical decision he makes? some of the drummers on here, although great in their own way sometimes it just became flexing chops. js. but i digress
I think that Dave is probably the most 'intelligent' drummer to emerge on the scene in the last 30 or so years.. Vinnie, Gadd, Keith Carlock are all absolutely incredible drummers, no doubt about that, but you rarely see them teaching their craft the way that Dave ALWAYS has, and still does, to this day. I'm a huge fan of all of the above, as well as (obviously) the late great Jeff Porcaro, but Dave is almost TOO good. His phrasing is insane.
Tony Williams solo is amazing. His musicality; technique, groove and swing are unsurpassed. We can only try to imagine what could have been. Best ever in my opinion.
Was taking lessons with Tony and he said he was off to london for a zildjan day. When he came back I said look forward to getting the video. He said he was unhappy with his performance and would not allow its release. And here it is.
This is a Gem. I've been looking for this session for a long time. I had it recorded on cassette tape. I believe it was played on a weekly radio show which was narrated by Branford. Used to drive around, delivering pizzas, jamming to this session all night long.
You could see what was to come even when we were teens in India! A great player, even if given nothing more than a table! :) His mom was a wonderful singer as well!
@@musopaul5407 I spent an evening in a hotel room in Manhattan with Trilok, Zakir and one of the Beach Boys after a concert at Madison Square Garden for an anniversary of the UN. One hell of a lot of fun with tablas, glasses, tables, voices etc! :)
Well, what can I say? Long lived the makers and users of Zildjian then. And hey, thanks for showing us some of, if the the oddest and special. But certainly the greatest examples of drummers. One conclussive word; Wow!

Just when I was starting to feel I was getting the hang of it and letting it flow all proud of myself I messed up and watched this. Back to remedial drumming I go. Wow. Just Wow. Sometimes being humbled in another's light is better than shining in your own. Much gratitude to the divine for making such talented individuals for us to enjoy.
For 45 years there has but one man who occupies the #1 spot for me, never to be dethroned. That man is Dave Weckl. No smoother, more fluid, melodic, musical, technical drummer has ever lived. His style should be mandatory. His transitions are impeccable. His phrasing is awe-inspiring. His groove is astounding. His pocket is deep. He is as consummate as they come. At this level it is merely a matter of taste. Vinnie, Donati, Borlai, Smith, Sucherman, Coleman and a fistful of others are equal to, or close to, the task, but Dave's style, for me, is unsurpassed.
They have no muffling at all. He never uses dampening on his toms or snare. They are wide open. He tunes them with more tension on both heads on this video. Maybe it is a noise gate. I noticed a gate on Vinnies solo.
Correction my friend not everybody. Tony has bigger ears and is much more difficult to copy I could say much more but you get the idea .But they are all great....
Tu devrais consulter la vidéo à nouveau car il semble que tu sois passé à côté de beaucoup. Si tu écoutes les performances simplement (sans les regarder) tu devrais percevoir la musicalité là où elle t'avait échappée auparavant. 👍

I’m really glad to see Trilok Gurtu getting the respect he deserves
Trilok Gurtu ....this alien from India i had the pleasure to see live in Paris in 1999 what an amazing live
Simon Phillips tore that up !!
Ok..Dave Weckl is just straight out anointed....

Tony Williams the best of the best. So much heart and blood and guts in his playing.
There's no best of the best
I think Tony is No.1!!!
I feel the universe and soul on his playing.
Erskine, amazing phrasing and dynamics. .
Yes, yes, yes…..Erskine is fire. Love his live work with Steely Dan,,,just wow. His drums sound amaaaazing!!! 👍
This upload is a gem, Thanks
What an unbelievable flow Vinnie has on the kit!! I have lots
of audio bootlegs of his clinics and he always sounds fresh.. Amazing!
Best era of Simon, the 80s! Ferrari Red outfit, Tama Artstars, Zildjian cymbals and in the Jeff Beck Group!
So jealous of Erskine’s touch and feel. Gerry Brown too. Damn that’s a good video.
Pretty much all these guys are legends
Weckl is a BEAST! Also love the face he makes at 3:26 😆

the all in one utube video with my favorite drummers

I love Tony!!!!
Always this annoying "Best ever" nonsense comment

My favorite Weckl era.
Weckl plays groovy! so delicious!
simply the best living drummer
Tony and Vinnie are two cats that can do something so left field and it still sounds great.

The zildjian day he did here was from Scotland

I would love to see them play together.

Good form Dave!!
peter erskin walks around like that. just straight musicality in everything he does.
Steely Dan 'Alive in America' is a brilliant example of just how good Peter Erskine and Dennis Chambers are.
American One Productions Rehearsal and Drum Studios in NJ gives two thumbs up 👍🏻🥁👍🏻
Nice how 2/3rds of the drummers featured in the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert in 1989 were involved here
This was the best of the best!!
Thanks for upload, I had this on vhs and have been searching years for this
Not enough can be said about Tony Williams.

👍I bet Tony Williams was a huge fan of Dave's!

In the 90s I used to travel an hour on the train on weekends to go to the drum shop, where they'd play videos like this.

Trilok! Yeah!!!
I like Tony’s DW kit more than his Gretsch. 👍👏🤟
Cool Man.
Beautiful!
WOW just stumbled on this ... DENNIS CHAMBERS HANDS ARE FASTER THAN MY EYES.....
40:34 Peter Erskine's is not the flashiest, but it goes the deepest.
4:52 lo mejor que le he visto hacer🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
Akira is old school awesome for us 80’s kids.
As well as the anime
Omg Dennis Killed
Trilok Gurtu is best of the earth!
Nice solos guys😁
Tony Williams 🖖🏿
Great Performances.
....Weckl hand down !!!
Love to watch Tony Williams. His toms are quite muffled. Interesting tuning. You hear it well on Believe it.
I think it's maybe because it's a DW kit and not his gretsch... Especially the Bass drum has got no real tone - I was a little cunfused too
They have no muffling at all. He never uses dampening on his toms or snare. They are wide open. He tunes them with more tension on both heads on this video. Maybe it is a noise gate. I noticed a gate on Vinnies solo.
just perfect video my Friend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Trilok Gurtu should be committed for that insanity... W O W!!!
Look for 21 species. Together with Mr. Phillips
Simon added another 200 drums since this footage!!!!
Incredible drumming at Zildjian Days! Unfortunately, much of the audio was not so great.
Even though there are some of the biggest names ever I'm liking trilok the best, so different so interesting
Unique tone production. I just wish he would learn to count in English.
Simon Phillips♪♪♫☺♥♥‼‼‼...
Love Weckl's early stuff, always doing a comp over an 90's VHS porn video soundtrack 😁
Trilok Gurtu is a great example of sing it in your head before you play it. He KNOWS where he is.
13.30 his solo starts
Tony is just beautiful
45:00 Dennis
4:52 Weckl in beast mode
I refuse to believe Vinnie was following a pulse. There's just no way
