I was there, eighth row center. Lots of great players and moments, but having seen it all in person, I can tell you without a doubt that Gadd was the superstar that day. Those grooves were not only in the pocket, but some of the most dynamic drumming I’ve ever heard, both macro and micro. Incredible.
I think it’s a weird performance for Gadd. He was pummeling his drums. Playing so loud that he wasn’t really getting any tone out of them. Maybe he was intimidated having to follow Vinnie? Personally I think Gadd’s peak was mid-70’s, and Vinnie’s Peak was mid-80s. I saw Zildjian Day in Dallas the following year, and Vinnie was so far ahead of the other drummers , even Tony Williams. I also saw Vinnie the next day at a clinic at the University of North Texas. I still have audio recordings from both events.
@@howtobeatadrum he wasn’t playing to the video, he was playing to the hall, and I assure you, the sound in that room was incredible. Really full, fat tone, great sustain, and most prominently, incredibly wide dynamics.
Been watching this since '84. What Vinnie does between 17:02 and 17:14 is still 🔥. Vinnie's glasses and mustache are also 🔥. Long live the pinstripe drum head!
I always watch this video because of cobhams part and espescially because of the sound of his drums in this video! Do you have any idea how he gets that sound? I know it's most because of him playing.. but what drums etc. (mics? effects?) did he use? I never found any answers to that..
Vinnie blew my mind, Alex was a powerhouse and the dancing chica is great, Tommy and Billy were the most musical. Tommy told a story with his playing, and Billy weaved in phrases over each other and also played phrases that told a story. Steve was just out of his mind, his ghost notes are the cleanest I've ever heard but the solo didn't catch me like Tommy's and Billy's. Watched this video over and over and over back in the day.
I have to admit , ego, drummer, what ever. FIrst time I saw Vinnie, my life changed for the best! He's even a teacher without knowing it = THAT's skill!
Love them all! I feel that, although highly respected, Alex Acuna should be more well known and of course Vinny is an absolute master. That said, there’s just something about Gadds playing that that gets me every time! The master of groove and feel!
I was never into Cobham. Just didn’t do it for me. Respect. Same with Tommy. I actually met Tommy once in the classroom of my private instructor at Berklee. At the time I didn’t know who he was. So when my instructor (John Ramsay) introduced me he could tell by my underwhelmed response I didn’t know him. He goes you don’t know who he is do you? I said no, sorry. Should I? He goes yes. Then they talked a minute and turned on me for not practicing that weeks lesson. It was a great experience. I later sat behind Tommy at a mini concert he gave at Tower Records. Behind the drummer is the best seat in the house for my money.
Cobham, Colaiuta and Gadd are the most skilled drummers ever. The other 2 guys are among the top 20-30. You can't have this much talent assembled. Thanks for sharing.
Only Collaiuta can do mental chops and time chopping insanity one second and then just chill out on a gigantic 4/4 groove for several bars. Most drummers who have chops near his level just don’t have the humility/genuine love of music required to do that
It's pretty cool to look back on this and not only see the difference in technique from then to today's top drummers, but also the difference in the SOUND and design of the kits.
Anybody know whats going on with the heads on Tommy Cambell's kit? It looks like the bearing edges are sticking up above the rims on the toms. Is it some kind of weird drum head or were the rims oversized?
All masters. I think Jack DeJohnette, Trilok Gurtu and Dave Weckl would fit in this list. But it's also difficult because sometimes you discover new ones that are just as good, but these have their own distinct style
Never played either and they’re both great. Can’t go wrong with whichever you pick. Steve smith swears by his Sonors, Gadd has been a Yamaha guy forever, Vinnie loves his Gretch, Simon Phillips and Billy love their Tamas, but if you got some do, Rey, me………Sonor, if not then Yamaha. Either way you’re on top! Good luck and let us know what ya get.
My vote is Yamaha, only because more of my favorite Master Drummers get Yamaha. Sonor I think is made somewhere else now, not Germany. Sonor is the most solid, heavy set made, and expensive. Make sure to tell us what you get!
fucking VINNIE!, one of the best drummers ever to play a kit succumbs to shitty 80's synth and solo over that crap...yuk! still love him though but steve gadd always steals the show.
His playing is genius, no doubt, but you definitely have a point there! Same with a lot of other fantastic drummers. Not really interested in solos anymore

Seemed like he was just screwing around the second and third guy were more impressive if you had to choose
@@KPac1234 if you’re a fan of groove drumming, it wasn’t close. I’m far from a Gadd fanboy, but I’m telling you, Gadd was smoking hot.

Vinnie for me
An amazing group of artists. Still, Nobody grooves like Gadd!!
Been watching this since '84. What Vinnie does between 17:02 and 17:14 is still 🔥. Vinnie's glasses and mustache are also 🔥. Long live the pinstripe drum head!
Cobham's drums sound absolutely glorious.

This is why for me Gadd is my all time favourite. Thank you Steve!
Vinnies Yamaha’s sounded better then than his Gretsch’s do now
YES! This is the original Vinnie's sound!
What a list of incredible drummers and interprets.
Beautiful ✨✨✨✨
Flashing back to 1984 & reading thru my transcript of VINNIES SOLO. untouchable. Those slamming 16th at the end. Ohhh. Fudge.
started to end this video until I seen Gadd come on the dude is incredible
Love them all! I feel that, although highly respected, Alex Acuna should be more well known and of course Vinny is an absolute master. That said, there’s just something about Gadds playing that that gets me every time! The master of groove and feel!
Getting this masters together for a great day of expression is the BEST lesson a young drummer could ask for…………thank you.
All these drummers are class a drummers
And the world turned away from music and the drummers that drove it 2022....
I used to have this on VHS!
I wore my version out around Vinnie's solo!

"You don't know who he is?" No. "You should." Why? "He's a dope drummer." I don't like dopes or drummers. "Wha-?"
... Strangest comment on RUclips ... Or worthless--why?
Campbell's toms are CRANKED tight! Look at the heads stretch between the shell and rim!
24:40-25:10 the deepest pocket I have ever heard in my life
I remember watching this when it came out and being blown away by Tommy Campbell’s left hi hat work!
Cobham, Colaiuta and Gadd are the most skilled drummers ever. The other 2 guys are among the top 20-30. You can't have this much talent assembled. Thanks for sharing.
I prefer the first solo though.
I think all of them are technically equal.
@@jkagenciadeviagens2612 it's the most original of them all. Greetings!
Steve Gadd without beard! Idol!
How drumming and Sound change over the years
Recording or stage custom with pinstripes. Still love it!❤

That left foot action at 12:15 and the change at 12:33 are nuts.
Steve Cobham ... and Billy Gadd !!!! 😋😍🙂
Fantastic
Vinnie was unbelievable
cobham: looks like a fibrestar?! .. black interior?
That’s what I thought.
This is THE classic
Lange gesucht und gefunden🤣🤪
Acuma is amazing!
Acuna comes out guns blazin'...
Common drumkit used is a yamaha maple custom
No, it's a Recording Custom RC9000. The Maple Custom Line was not avaible before 1990.
Really amazing. Watching the Vinnie part and it's frustrating that the camera angles suck. Why do I want to watch a close up of his face?
Cause he has the coolest pair of glasses.
The cameraman should be fired for ruining the video
Pretty wild that acuna was playing an Amir cymbal. Weren't those the "zbts" of the 80s?
👍Alex Acuna is a beast! ALL OF THEM ARE BEASTS!!!! 👍‼️
Too out of all the drummers playing on this video..Vinnie was the best to me.....
Anybody know whats going on with the heads on Tommy Cambell's kit? It looks like the bearing edges are sticking up above the rims on the toms. Is it some kind of weird drum head or were the rims oversized?
They were Pearl Extenders, which had rims the extended beyond the bearing edges of the drums. Made them tympani like.
I am guessing from the sound and feel of the drumming that the groove from the beginning of the video was played by Vinnie. Anyone know for sure?
Sound. Check. Feel. Check. Groove. Check
I watched the whole thing thinking all these guys are great. I couldn’t pick one…until Gadd.
The bassist with Vinnie is Tim Landers?
The timeline notation should say alex acuna for the first performance
Alguien podría decir quienes son los músicos que acompañan a Alex Acuña?
Gostei da performance da garota 😂

Everybody did great here. But, one question, I’m thinking of buying a different kit, which drums should I get, Yamaha Drums, or Sonor Drums?
Yamha

Steve stole it
Tremendous. So much groove!
Undoubtedly
digging campbell ...he could have brought a 4 piece kit man and did that

Steve Gadd is more musical than the others.
What’s the name of the song Vinnie is playing after his solo?
It's not it, but to me it sounds like a song by Steve Khan called Where's Mumphrey.
alex is good but next time bring a sexy girl....kidding...babe is sizzling hot
I'm a big Cobham fan, but I have to admit this is great but not his usual shape
lol what??? thats armand zildjian? wow.
Es Acuña no Acuna
my take...vinnie sounded good here...he played music...when he got older it is all endorsements playing fast .....those yamahas sound good for him
Minutos 7 52 empieza el webeo Jajaja
Gadd plays that same easy riff over,n over wit the dumb bouncin up,n down...HIS WHOLE FUCKIN CAREER
His playing is genius, no doubt, but you definitely have a point there! Same with a lot of other fantastic drummers. Not really interested in solos anymore
billy...another cat who played first 3 albums like a champ.....then here comes the money....he sold out man.....sad
