    Love the symbolism of the metronome. When Randall plays with the metronome his music sound broken and almost forced but once it was removed it sounds whole and free, which represents the DEI and how if you love with the score in mind and without taking risks you may not fully experience it

    • @cynthianguyen185
      @cynthianguyen185 4 года назад +6

      oh shit that’s a good interpretation. i was thinking the metronome simply criticizes an orderly system; this can be applied to governments and such. it restricts our self expression and prevents us from being human. the metronome also shows good character development when Randall decides to stop replying on it

    • @josiah566
      @josiah566 4 года назад +10

      yes but note that the piano teacher already has a poised and internal rhythmic sense and control. Freedom from the metronome is only freeing if there is a grounding and resolute sense of self, and a true understanding of it. Randall's struggle is that he believes his life is better within orderly systems, when in reality he suffers from an uncertain and broken sense of self, and he fears the failure that comes from lacking both the sense of self AND a system, and so is never able to break free. "I need this," he says hesitantly and anxiously.
      Randall's growth is that he overcame heartbreak and remembers that good relationships and good things in life come when you overcome fear and reliance on external orderly systems. He helps others find joy by breaking a very clear confidentiality rule, and he eventually finds joy himself.

    • @josiah566
      @josiah566 4 года назад +10

      I don't think the metronome is inherently restrictive or a negative character. It simply exists. It's mechanical. It is a tool that can help guide you if you lack rhythmic sense, it is there to help you develop a skill - whether you turn it on and off is ultimately up to you. Using it as a guide and then freeing yourself from it ("I know I need help"), or relying on it to provide you with a sense of structure and order as a safeguard ("I need this"), or viewing it as restrictive when it is forced upon us by others ("I feel resrained and suffocated"), these are human and personal responses that come from internal motivations, projected on an external tool.

    I liked how the metronome was used as both a metaphor for the EI score and foreshadowing for the ending. A metronome is very methodical and should only be used as a tool before moving on to playing naturally, just like how the DEI should work (in theory). The entire time Randall was clearly not following the metronome at all, but he felt like he needed it; showing how he feels dependent on his EI score, even though it has never helped him in return. When he feels confident to play without it, he also realizes people shouldn't let their EI score get in the way of their happiness.

  • @joshpark5200
    @joshpark5200 4 года назад +102

    the metronome and piano represent love and the DEI. Just like how the metronome restricts Randall’s ability to play the piano, the DEI restricts Randall’s ability to love.
    Other example is how Randall grew to resent the piano for a long time which symbolizes how Randall grew to hate love and the pain it brings. Overtime, he eventually began to play the piano which means he began to open his heart for the opportunity of love. Only when he masters playing the piano Randall has truly understood love.

    Wow, this video really touches deep in standardized testing in America. I come from France and have been living here in the U.S for almost 11 years and the way our school system does standardized testing is so awful. It makes people think of the same way, of doing things the same method, etc. no creativity- no leniency of bringing other mindset and perspectives to answering a question. It sucks. Our education system needs a REVOLUTION!

    • @alexshi9320
      @alexshi9320 4 года назад +2

      You see, standardized testing is broken, but it was invented to stop just that, a revolution. Standardized testing was a way to prevent fraud, populism, and establish a meritocratic society - it has succeeded in some ways and failed in another. I feel like it is not so bad, because consider the fact that arts colleges require portfolios for that reason alone.

I think it shows that the worldbuilding was good and there were other facets of this DEI world to explore. I would enjoy more series set in this universe. Pure genius!
    First, in simply 20 minutes, it tells such a compelling coming-of-age story for Randall, both emotionally and mentally. Emotionally, he first recovers from his heartbreak by repurposing his gift to his ex-gf for his personal growth (in terms of musical knowledge). Working through his internal conflicts, he stepped out of his comfort zones of following rules, by first turning off the metronome to FEEL, then by following his gut feeling of what's right and giving away a copy of the interview, and finally following his heart with reaching out to Eskra. Hence, the actions of Randall and Eskra (as well as Ben and Sara) sheds a light on how we ought to view rules (explicit or implicit) in society -- through healthy skepticism and avoiding blind faith, so we have a chance at self-discovery and purpose. Wongfu, again and as always, sends a beautiful message through a film with complex emotions.
    Secondly, it gives an entire backstory to Randall, not only providing context to the other film, but more importantly, shows that these characters have different experiences and lives. Consequently, it reminds us that we each are the main character of our own stories. This harmonizes with the idea that we should influence our own destiny through the decisions we make (rather than following superficial and perhaps unspoken societal rules, e.g. one should act to improve one's EI score in this film, or e.g. one should pursue wealth, fame, or approval in real life). In fact, all the characters in this fiilm and in "Everything Before Us" step out of line, following their instinct. This theme also pulls on a reminder of another WongFu short "Just Another Day".

    I've felt myself turning into Randall. I've literally thought I would be avoiding risks if at one point, everything was already laid out in front of me. Behind it was the fact that many people often gives the "best of me" versus the "real me". Indeed, I've been jaded regarding relationships, especially when things seemed so perfect. I've finally found the one! She's the qualities I've been looking for (mentally, spiritually, emotionally mature)! Only to realize that it was merely a facade for her to get married and she couldn't lie to herself much longer. She only did it to not be left out from having the same life as her friends. To feel what they felt. In the end, she didn't want to lose a great guy, but she didn't want to lie to herself either.

    The EI score test which is a tool to help you rescognize the level of your feeling in some moments, not at all. So, be yourself, be your real feeling to heal you and others. Do not let the high score to lead you to the good standard.
