Sand at a slower speed and also sand horizontally for a better finish. You are correct the rubber glove can be quite dangerous since it can be caught by the spinning wood and pull your hand into the lathe. Please be careful
I appreciate the advice...it's still a big learning curve for me at the moment. I had a few catches which can sting a little so I'd been wearing a glove...hopefully as confidence grows I'll remove it. I shall try the sanding tip you suggested too...I was a little disappointed with the finish so it may be down to my sanding technique.
