Crane Triplex: vacated harbor crane as micro-flat over Amsterdam

- Figee crane 2868 sat abandoned in Amsterdam’s Eastern Docklands for nearly four decades until a team devoted to boutique apartments rehabbed it into a three-story luxury apartment perched 50 meters (164 feet) above the IJ-River.
When containers took over the shipping industry in the 1970s, the cranes on KNSM Island (“Royal Dutch Steamboat Company” island) became obsolete and were demolished save one. Over three decades later, a local resident rallied to save that remaining crane, eventually finding the developer/rental group Yays who partnered with the city of Amsterdam to create a second life for the industrial monument.
The crane, and the original operators’ huts, was broken down and shipped north where the interior was prefabbed - complete with a large bathtub that had to be dropped in while the roof was open- and sent back to the island as a fully-complete 40-square-meter elevated holiday home.
Instead of relying on the original vertical ladder for accessing the flat, the team created a spiral staircase to enter the first blue box which houses a living room and kitchen. A tiny staircase leads to the second blue box where one finds a bathroom (with tub/shower) and a bedroom. An exterior ladder leads to the top floor and the original crane operator’s hut which now has a bed and toilet and the original panoramic window once used by the machinist to monitor his work.

Your kids are adorable. They've grown so much since I started watching. As usual great video.
Yes their old enough to know not to walk into places just grabbing & touching on stuff that's rude and something can break!! They go wild sometimes..
Kristen your videos are incredible and always brighten up my day
So nice to see a part of history remain and repurpose as a usable space for housing.....Thank you Kirsten and family for sharing with us...
Awesome upload! What a fabulous residence, in the middle of everything yet secluded✌️
So beautifully restored and the history preserved!!! spectacular views from that top bedroom and absolutely loved the hidden toilet!!!💕🏡💕
Damn! .. That is nice, people have all kinds of ideas to build & transform a place/space into a cozy home or whatever!
Why would a crane turn was the funniest question i have heard yet..Sorry just made me laugh & the way he answered it so seriously.
I think she messed the question up & was meant to ask why did they fix it solid now instead of letting it rotate still, maybe.
Coz everyone knows a crane rotates as it's a crane & it moves things around.
AFTER DARK me too - I’m like who is asking that? Didn’t sound like the little girl....tho he answer really professionally
🦒I was looking like what, really
I was a union crane operator. In the US, we call this type of crane a "whirley".
Omg I’m so glad I’m not the only one that laughed at that!
You always find the most interesting subjects! Love your channel
Beautiful , Million dollar view doesn’t begin to describe the amazing views from this home
Thank you so much for putting this up I envy you so much for being able to go around the world and show us such amazing content
Very creative and also the view is really beautiful. Maybe the adaptation to the environment is ... good. Very good video. Thank you Kirsten.
Good to see the Dutch government allows for some "out of the box" thinking when it comes to regulations. Maybe the Belgian government can take note of this.
Koen Dekoning the us could take a hint or two from this as well the last state in the entire us is Missouri that has no building relation
@joshuafyi. I'm sorry to hear that and listen in countries like The Netherlands and Belgium I get that over-population is a problem and there have to be regulations to make sure we have some nature left to enjoy. I envy the the wide open spaces and the ability to buy plots of land that you can really make your own in the US. In W-Europe that is not an option any more. Except for the super rich that is.
joshuafyi anderson absolutely wish the US would think outside the box.
German govt should be like this, too. We have WAY too strict regulations to make alternative living feasible.
Your videos always make me smile
I love to see your kids growing Kirsten! Still a big fan of yours! ❤️😊
Spent 7 years on this project !!! Marvelous !
All I can think about is how cold and windy it gets in Amsterdam and that trip up to the bedroom.
Fantastic video - a place I'd love to stay in. Thank you Kirsten
This is one of your most coolest video's. What a cool lifestyle.
I very much enjoyed this ! Thanks for sharing ...😊
5:30 This part is so cool. The rainbow tops it all off as you welcome your new home.
Interesting, I was just in Rotterdam and thought that some of the cranes there that are now just there for decorative / historical reasons could be converted into small apartments. Little was I to know someone had already done this, and not too far away! Probably quite cold in the winter though.
it was solitary but i loved crane /winch operation and the awesome lonesomeness of it
Il be there it three weeks, great video thanks for putting so much work into it 😀👍⭐️
there are good reasons why this has 1600 thumbs up .....captures our imagination...is a dream. thank you for posting =) and for reducing monotony of life......Life can be fun, really. Thanks for telling the world respite and breath of fresh air exists, Kristen =)
Loving watching your channel grow! You should consider investing in a gimbal for your camera to reduce/remove the shake
Very cool refurbish and recycling commitments to local history.
I love it. It is so cool! Love the way it is decorated! ❤️🏗
i think this is my favorite channel on ole youtube
This plan of small well designed, functional rooms would also work if the rooms were arranged on a one level floor plan. I have A LOT of trouble with stairs due to mobility issues. But that design looks to be a very smart use of space. I bet the square footage would fit quite nicely in half a basement, or it could be used several times in the footprint of a multi story house. Hmmmmm.
WOW! Another excellent document we might have never know about . Thank you. & Bravo! :-)
That is awesome!
Why would it turn? ..... Err, it’s a crane?! 😀
How absolutely stunning! I’d love to stay there!
Amazing!!! It's on my bucket list now 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
Oh my gosh! Your kids are getting so big!
He should enclose the rest of the crane or add more wooden boxes as bedrooms. He could have a small mini sky scraper. He should continue stacking bedrooms on top until he reaches the angled boom part.
Very nice..... And looks like a fun place to live in.
enjoyed this vid thank you for sharing :)
If you use a toilet in the upper bedroom, then where do you wash your hands afterwards?
Yes, it would have been great if they had installed one of those Japanese tank-top basins.
I did not know what it was, but after googeling I completely agree, it would be very clever.
Welcome to the exciting world of hand sanitizers!
You meant to say "Welcome to exciting world of smearing bacteria and dirt all over your hands with some gel that claims to kill 99% of bacteria"? If it would be so simple we would not need sinks, baths and showers at all.
Well, I guess you're doing more smearing with your feces than most people.
(As for the hand sanitizer vs shower thing: You know that hand sanitizers are mostly alcohol, right? The reason we use water for bathing is because rubbing alcohol over your body every day would be terrible for your skin in the long run. However, alcohol has long been known to kill 99.99999% of bacteria. It's not a 'claim'; it's an actual fact. You may want to review your high school biology and chemistry textbooks.)
Totally awesome and original, good catch!
Thank you for sharing...fantastic video 👍🏽
Wow, great idea & great manifestation!
Man you should have seen that dock in the days before the hipsters came.. ..ah the Parties!!☺
Awesome idea, awesome views
Nah..."you feel the crane shaking a little bit ..." that's it, not for me! However, what a great restoration.
Which windows open? Needless to say, this is breathtaking.
oh wow, the top bedroom is super but there're 2 concerns you need to go outside and even with toilet, I usually want privacy if I stay with someone but this is amazing!
saw this one in Bristol, great video!
I love when people think like this !! How about a slide on that structure. Kid in me
that whole section from the top bedroom to the bottom should have been enclosed in glass. any heating you had in those rooms would be wiped out the second you opened the door. that toilet seat will give your tush frostbite.
I thought the same. Even thick plastic would not kill any views and it would stop the wind from blow up. Must get cold going up and down the stairs but still I am in love with that whole concept.
Snowflakes in winter, enjoying snowflakes in winter.
Kirsten please fix the audio issue. You cut up the interview but have no constant power or fades on there. It jumps a lot and pops.
Charming place!
Great vid! Could you climb all the way up?
💞💜💞 Incredibly imaginative 💞💜💞
absolutely awesome!
wow. just wow. brilliant.
This place costs just under 500 Euros a night to stay in. Yikes.
They have to pay for it someway.
Haha that’s funny, thx for revealing that. Puts a different light on it. Not really a solution for economically challenged people
:D
Ridiculously overpriced piece of junk for rent: about 600 € for a night. And they didn't mention the total cost for refurbish, salvaging and transformation in a small apartment wannabe. Can only immagine what if the stairs froze you will get stuck in the upper level.
>500 / 4 people isn't too bad.
Must have been a very expensive project!!!
GorillaGuerilla I imagine so since they charge 493 Euros a night to stay in it!
Wow thats a lot but its for the entire space right? But I'd rather stay in the center on a houseboat tbh.
Money well spent I say, no Chinese pockets lined, so all good ;D
Why are you yelling!!!!
Amen, simply historic genius.
Beautiful!
I love it!
What a dream! You could climb it any time youd like tooo
That sure is different. it's unique but it's too high up for me thanks for sharing
I MUST show this to my son !!!!
We loooove Amsterdam, and we have been there several times !
Actually he and his girlfriend just returned from there 2 weeks ago, and we were already making plans to go there the 3 of us next year in summer again !
That would be THE PERFECT PLACE TO BE for a week or two !!!
Wonder how much it would cost !
Too bad that he didn't tell it in the video !
But def. no big thing to find it out !
🌷🌼🌷
Kirsten, I think you should have your own show on Netflix.
Where is the sink to wash one’s hands after the bathroom?
Great video
❤ this guy ! 😉
Turns out it's not cheap to stay in this place: The site says it's 400-500 Euros a night (about $500USD). The site also says this place only has one bedroom and is only suitable for 2 adults (i.e. you can't bring a friend/child for the upstairs bedroom). Seems like a lot, even for a tourist-friendly place like Amsterdam.
Well, this answers the question of who cranes the cranemen
Love this
Must have cost a lot of money. Do the owners own the land it sits on or do they have to rent the land? Also in California I doubt you could get liability insurance because of those steep stairways. Probably a lot of the place is not up to code but then maybe ok in Amsterdam. It is interesting but I wouldn't like to live in it. Maybe as a getaway it would be fun.
Do people stay there under strong winds?
Awesome! Can you stay at night and how do I book?
..and construction cost per square meter of this apartment..?) Oh my god it must have been expensive to renovate the whole crane)
You need to do a collaboration video with My Self Reliance.
Is this an apartment or a hotel room?
What a cool small home! That said...it seems to me like this was a very expensive venture. I am all for re-purposing and reusing old things...but if the expense to create something makes the space unattainable for financially challenged people, then it's not worth it. It IS okay to destroy something to make something that serves many people instead of just a few.
Have you been destroyed yet?
A toilet near the bed? Why not make a small extention room behind the door for the toilet and use a partition?
Very creative. I can't imagine how much this cost to move. The guy kinda looks like Ricky Martin who is actually living la vita loco.
happykt 🤣
I'm just thinking what happens when I have food delivered to this place. It's either the delivery guy climbs up or I go down to meet the delivery guy 🙃
So he said that it gets cold enough for the pipes to freeze, and then he immediately says you have to climb outside to get up top.
Maybe not a year-round vacation destination, I'd hate to climb those steps in the freezing rain
Did you stay there when you were in Amsterdam?
We didn't, but still enjoyed just climbing up for the tour.
Shame it doesn't still turn, could be a residence with controllable/ever-changing view ---
Im 1,96 this would be hell for me eventhough its so beautiful
1.88 m is considered tall in the NL? Aren't they the tallest people in the world on average?
"Why would it turn?" Really....
amazing
Looks like it's from that city in Ready Player One.
Love your videos, two constructive criticisms 1) set Hz (denoise, anti banding) for the country you're visiting 2) set shutter speed to be approximately double the number of frames per second as the fps drops off in some scenes.
Got to hand it to the Dutch, their good!
randy bugger
It ain’t much if it ain’t Dutch. Sorry, could not help myself. 🇳🇱😌
No, you couldn't, could you LOL but it was your bunch that found Australia originally, so Cheers.
We should have kept on to it, never been there but seems like an amazingly beautiful country.
Yes it is, as long as you don't annoy the animals, their all trying to kill you LOL
They also founded South Africa, now look at that mess!
Would've been cooler if it turned. You could wake up to a different view every morning
I'd be more interested if it were operable.
Love these videos but why do the kids have to be involved?
TrailerPark Supervisor Why not?
A real pity your camera has some Smooth Motion setting turned on. It makes panning look choppy. chop chop chop. Very sharp but not fluid.
Try watching with a computer or smartphone with a fast enough graphic card. The effect you explain will vanish. It's about the graphic CPU, not the image itself-
nah. not trying to be rude, maybe a bit too direct. lol
With the gems they're filming not getting everything out of that camera is just a shame. Im sure they're using good gear.
I didn't see choppiness, I think Nicolás is correct.
Watched again, so the camera does strobe while climbing the stairs and once in top on some clips, pity.
Sounds like they truncated the silence but did it REALLY poorly.
Yes I wouldn't use the TV until nightfall!
what about fire safety?
Palatine of facts jesus is his fire insurance
Just jump in the water. The fastest exit there is.
Very cool even though its not all that practical
Awesome production and content.
Progressive people with a progressive government!.
From the mouth of babes: "I want to live here!"
Being a South African of part dutch decent, I sympathise. Europeans need to stand together, the invasion is everywhere, from many fronts. Blame the liberals...
