@@AtomicMoviess I agree with the insane taxes, that's the reason I wouldn't move there. I used to live in Berlin and half of my income was gone, cost of health insurance was ridiculous and there were very few euros left to invest, even though I was a high-income person. Crazy stuff. Life changed after moving to Sydney. Later on, even more, when I set up a company in Brazil paying 9-10% and started a nomad life. But what's the problem with the government? Seems pretty reasonable compared to most other places. And what do people judge you on the most?
Eliseu Monar dos Santos by goverment i mean the laws they make and how they do not fix it. Look up “gedoogsbeleid” for exempel or we have the best roads in the whole world way better then the autobahn but we only allowed to drive 100km/u (60miles), its just so cricked
I want to know how Kirsten's children end up deciding to live when they move out of the house, or rather, stop traveling with mom and dad on adventures.
Love it. You need to be REALLY careful of submerged/unknown POLES underwater though when you jump in from piers, etc. You can be paralyzed or killed by one.
They have to be. Their nation was built from the flood plains and they know how to work with water. They had over 1,000 years of experience dealing with it.
It's nice and may be cheap, but it's cheap to the upper class because it's still pretty expensive to most people. The 'wateryuppies' as he calls them are people who actually can afford to buy a house in the center of Amsterdam if they wanted to. Anyone below the upper class is slowly moving out of Amsterdam (further away than this houseboat yard) and this will become a problem (actually already is) in the future.
Marinus I hunk this is true of all cities. What used to be housing for the workers becomes affordable homes for the middle class. Then it spreads out, so that people go out to the country and buy what used to be farm workers houses or peasant cottages. Those on low incomes struggle to stay in the areas they were born in, as they pushed out by rising property prices. Not sure how it will ever change.
I agree, this is a global problem. I don't understand why something as primitive as SHELTER is so hard to attain!? Shelter, food and water should be the basics for every human, and yet, shelter seems to be a life-time achievement which you get at the end of your life, then you die and leave it for your kids or something...
KicKaSS , I agree. Water, food and shelter ought to be basic human rights. But they have to keep us committed to working to make them money, to effectively own us.
Hi C O, the place didn't cost 1 euro, they bought the ship for a higher price including the spot (you have to pay for the spot separately). They decided to sell the ship they bought for 1 euro so they could build a new, and more expensive home in the spot they bought. Get it? :) They just had to get rid of the home that they bought to also get the spot that's why they sold it for a symbolic price.
yet another great video! Thanks Kirsten, I really enjoy watching your videos whenever I have to wake up early, just before I start working (remote working from home).
I think it's a beautiful neighborhood. I love that no two are alike. Great place to raise your kids too. I really loved the chairs and bar area in the kitchen.
Love this one Kirsten. The location, the minimalism and the light. The only thing that would take some getting used to is the relative lack of privacy. Though on the flip side there is also something very appealing of having a tight knit community that looks out for one another. Something that I feel seems to be disappearing.
Not much that I don’t like about this build it is well designed for their purpose to have a great home on the water! I only wish that there were more colors added to make it a little more pleasing to the eye! Otherwise it has a fantastic design appeal! I especially liked how he built the kitchen Island with the chairs built into the design is quite cleverly done. 👍👍👍👍❣️
Such a great design for a house. I like how he designed a cool spaced based on being in the water. However, even if it was on land it'd be a cool design. I would have liked to see / hear more of the roof. How'd they deal with rain / water run off? The roof looks great, but it also looks like a tub that would fill with water and run the stairs.
I think it becomes more problematic in/around Amsterdam to buy and live affordable. Many of my friends who bought houses 5 years ago are now seeking outside of Amsterdam because over the years they have gained a family. Prices are insane in downtown. I think the solution of more floating house boats is something to consider.
I always think how easy to rich somethings beautiful in architecture then you don't have 8 months of winter with -10 / -30 degrees Celsius and 150 santimemetres of snow. Even concrete brokered from that weather. In Russia we are think more about indoors comfort, if you're achieve this goal, your home is good
Good point! Don't fight with nature! Cooperate and be with nature! use the land for vegetation and increasing forest. Leave at sea where possible... I think this will be our future too.
I just had a trip to Ams. The guide says boat house is much more expensive than normal houses, because you need to purchase for a slot, and no more slots are available.
Not sure how you can have metal piping when the house is floating in water? Possibly flexible tubing. Unless the house is not actually floating and it is attached somehow. The houseboats I've been you have to manually get waste pumped out of the holding tank.
Very well maintained neighborhood. Probably because they are not having to go into a 30 year debt slavery. They have money left over to do other things. I never thought about weight distribution. I wonder what the formulas they are using?
This a great film a lovely family and a beautiful space; but I would like some facts and figures. How much for the mooring? Is it rented/owned/leased etc How much to build the house, to run it, to maintain it? How are domestic taxes calculated? What building regulations other than height? Is it tidal? Is it sea/estuary/river/canal? What safeguards of tenure? How do you access dry land? Is it safe for the kids? Is it a "gated" community or open to Joe Public ?.Is it a concrete hull? Does it have to come out of the water for mantainence? etc...I'll try your website if I may! Thanks.
Ok so I need to know about the murphy bed! How does the counterweight work and where is it hidden? I didn't see any springs or gas pistons, how does it work I need to know! Kirsten please if you know please share!
They are historically called Grachthuizen - I have an old book from the 1970s about the city of Amsterdam, and they seem to have gotten much bigger since then .. I would rather live where there's land, but that's not to say I wouldn't pull an indie and live here
House take value with the time. What about the house boat? Probably the boat location but not the house i guess. But it's lovely and beautiful. Funny story, so if you have a party , please keep everyone in the center.
Wow ! I never knew you could buy a lot on a body of water unless it was private land. Definitely close together. Does Amsterdam have bad weather like in the USA ? Like coastal areas ?
Interesting. I was asking about the weather because of how close the homes are. Here in Florida the seas and large bodies of water can get purity ruff. Plus the tide changes and tidal surges get bad. I did not think about freezing either ! Looks like a neat way to live if you have calm water. :)
The Dutch are so resourceful. I love how they accommodate bicycles on many of their roads. If I were younger I’d redo my life in Holland.
You rather do not i hate it here lol

Hundreds of floating homes. Each one could be an episode :)

Yeah I spotted a couple I'd like to know more about.
Extremely interesting. Amazing
what this architect did. Nice
simple planning - enjoyed this.
Really love your houseboat. What a clever design. I had a pontoon houseboat in the 60's so know living on the water is great

I pass by these boat homes a lot, was always curious how they looked like inside 😍😍👍
Very clever design and use of materials! The ‘village’ looks good too

I love the design of the drop down bed - so simple and elegant. Would like to know more about the hidden hinge contraption...

Fantastic!!! Simplicity at best
Outstanding home design. Great video.
I love how clean, wide, and open he designed the house. But i wonder how it gets connected to the city's waters, sewers, and electricity?
Hoses, tubes and wires
Same as normal houses on shore ar al the electrical and sewer connections
Love this video. Thank you!
soon the ocean level goes up and we all may need to live in houses like that.
*How do you get fresh water and how do you dispose gray and black water?*

The hull must be made of ferro CEMENT. MANY BOATS DURING THE EARLY WARS WERE MADE OF THIS CEMENT. THE older it gets the more it cures.
Could you kindly tell me the location of the village, I'd love to visit to get some inspiration to build something here in the UK.
Very nice
How do you prevent the water from entering the downstairs bedrooms? I thought concrete was porous. Are you using some non-degradable liner?
Wouldn’t a square base makes better stability and good for house layout too?
I got to ask this everytime I watch video about people building their small house - how do you handle the fresh water and black water?
An awesome place ,but where did the poops goes.
