Also with no yacht like borders to the house..how stable is the house in really rough conditions like storm & choppy waters..not sure if the low porch will be able to keep water out in bad weather..

That combined with his financial acumen and practical applications of all the basic principals of each knowledge area is more impressive than the home. Of course...he needed all of that knowledge to build the home on his own.

Ain’t that the truth. I never actually got to a point where I felt I even enjoyed being a homeowner on my wages. There was always far more worry than their was enjoyment or personal satisfaction in the equation as long as everything concerning ownership boiled down to cold hard cash. For those of us who know they will always have to scratch out a meager existence this offers a little bit of hope or at least a possibility of some hope if necessary. Maybe not this specific build but downsizing and tiny space living in general. That’s how I stumbled upon the video. Seems to be more about a simpler life style in general. Or more manageable without sacrificing some enjoyment.

I watched the progress on this driving in and out of town to work and I so wanted to stop and ask you about it. You have done a beautiful job! Thankyou for sharing this, I truly love what you have done and how you have set things up! I’ve been researching alternative housing such as tiny homes, floating and even yurts, just haven’t the skills you have. Congratulations on your beautiful home! ❤️

It cool to see the propane lights. I grew up with a cottage in the Pontiac (just past the Gatineau, (Danford/Kazubazua) and we didn’t have electricity until the late 70’s... so we had propane to cook, run the fridge, and lights. Miss those simple days.

What an awesome setup! Brings back memories! For many years our family lived on a homestead in Southeast Alaska 9 MI from Ketchikan in an old dilapidated two-story float house that, at one time was the last existing floating Bordello in southeast. Ha! Still had the old sign that said Sugar Shack above the door! I could write a book on that experience but that would be for another day! Enjoy!

They were built on HUGE old growth logs that were lashed together with logging tower cables. I love your comment about the old whore house! Used to be a few back there in my hometown also 😉

As you were describing your home you’ve built, it kept showing what an intelligent, well motivated, skilled architect, and seems like you have the finances to use all the best products to cover your comfort, safety, and being able to get homeowners insurance combines to near genius level. And you seem like one incredible person and father. I hope this house remains everything you set your goals for what you made this amazing floating structure. Best wishes.

Thank you for allowing us into your wonderful home and sharing your thought processes that led your life to this point. To say this is a very well done presentation is an understatement.
The design of the structure appears to be excellent. But it is the thought given to the systems, from the water supply to the wiring to the waste, which is most impressive. I do differ on the decision not to have door access from the bedroom(s) to the upper deck, both from a personal preference view and a fire safety perspective. A double door setup would protrude only a matter of inches onto the deck space and would make the insulation loss negligible.

Hi Dave. Thanks for your input. The upstairs rooms have windows for safety egress. There were a few reasons for not having an upper door to the deck. Two bedrooms, 2 kids and one gets a door and one doesn't = trouble. I get a lot of wind driven rain, and I've seen too many doors that end up leaking and causing rot. Budget was also a consideration. I've built the project out of pocket and paid as I went, so some things that would be nice to have included just were not in the cards. Lastly, I can always blow out a wall and add a door later if I really want one. Thanks for your interest & kind words
      Jay

Your floating home is beautiful, Jay. I spent the better part of my life in the San Francisco Bay Area and was always checking out the houseboats in Sausalito and other harbors in the region. Unfortunately those floating homes are, for the most part, as expensive as land-based homes. So when I retired a couple of years ago, I really could not justify continuing with a $2000/mo+ mortgage plus HOA fee, so I opted to build a tiny house on wheels instead. I've been staying with family in Southern California while my tiny is under construction. I do occasionally daydream about taking the house off the trailer and putting it on a float, but consulting a builder of floats he asked me, "but where are you going to berth it? There are no available docks in the area." Bummer. My tiny house will be completed soon, and it looks like I will me moving it to the Oregon coast, so at least I will be close to the water. Your home is very inspiring nonetheless. Cheers.

What's the legal status of anchoring in the sacramento river and using a canoe to shuttle? I assume you'd have to anchor at a different place every day, though I really have no idea.

Every alt house situation would be different, and different in parts of the country it's done in. I lived in Fla and after a while more laws were made about who/how float houses were allowed, charged, etc. But, I certainly hope that laws (if any) will accommodate the alternatives that have been coming about in the last decades. Some municipalities seem stricter than others, and that may be fair or not. Like in Fla, you have to build with hurricane wind mitigation in mind. Ok, I want this house !!
