    Just wanted to say THANK YOU!! I have just started making and selling candles and your suggestions were spot on! I've switched from soy to parasoy and the HTP-104 wick you suggested works perfectly. l am also finding adding the fragrance at a cooler temp is working much better as well.

      Nicky Warren That’s awesome! Glad to hear it’s working for you. I’d love to see the finished product. Have you test burned anything yet?

    • @hemlock_pointe
      @hemlock_pointe 6 лет назад +8

      Yes I have! The one I'm test burning now is called Cozy Blanket and it's a warm cotton smell. It's doing very well. I also had someone to test one for me called Toasted Pumpkin that I actually put 2 wicks in. She's reporting that it smells great and is burning smoothly and clean!

    • @StandleyHandcrafted
      @StandleyHandcrafted  6 лет назад +4

      Nicky Warren toasted pumpkin sounds incredible. I saw that scent but hadn’t tested it yet.

    • @hemlock_pointe
      @hemlock_pointe 6 лет назад +3

      Definitely give it a whirl! Everyone that I have had smell my candles and melts love T. Pumpkin the most! I do notice however the fragrance doesn't linger as long in the melts as some other fragrances. It kind of hits you all at once for about 4-5 hours and then you're kind of left with the vanilla notes. In a candle though, it's really good!

    This video seriously saved my butt. I was getting so stressed over the weak HT I was getting from my wax melts (IGI 4625 wax). I was adding FO at 180° 🤦‍♀️ Can't thank u enough🙂

    Thanks for this breakdown! I'm just diving into candle making and like any novice, did the 1lb/ 1oz ratio. My FO is Black Sea from Candlescience (which smells AMAZING and strong alone in the bottle) but I was disappointed with the HT and ready to blame the wax. (CBL-130 from a local candle supply store). I will be patient and try again with a higher FO percentage. Thanks again!

      Tunisia did you cure your candles. I hear that sometimes you need to cure as long as two weeks. That will yield high throw.

    wow, you just clarified for me - I'm always blending fragrance at 185 is what instructed the manufacture for the wax I use golden 464- but hot throw must be doing what you explained because it is not strong - so thank you so much for your videos.

  • @cbpapp

    I don’t know that this has been addressed, at least in any candle video I’ve watched. What do you do with the candles that don’t turn out with a significant hot throw? I hope I won’t have to do a lot of testing 🤞🏻 because that equates to a lot of wasted money in candle wax. I realize that’s the only way to determine the most scented and even burning candle, but I’ve had that initial question on my mind for awhile. What do you suggest beginners do with their candles that don’t meet their expectations? Is there a way to re-use the wax to continue testing, or do I just end up with a fragrance free candle? Thanks in advance for your response. Thank you for all your videos, I greatly appreciate all your tips, time, experience and tutorials.

    You guys are awesome! Quick Q. If I'm making a 10oz candle should I still follow the 1oz to 1lb rule? That'll leave me with extra left over. And because this is my business I can't afford to waste product. If I measured .63lb of wax that would give me 10.08oz which a little over enough for my jar. You did mention shrinkage so what would you recommend? I gave you a "like" you're awesome! Thank You!

    • @StandleyHandcrafted
      @StandleyHandcrafted  6 лет назад +1

      Thank you so much for watching and the like! I appreciate it. :)
      For .63lb of wax you would use .63 oz or rounded to .7oz of fragrance oil.
      If it's easier to do I always go the pound and just pour extra into wax shot cups. They sell very easy and people love to mix them if you only end up with 2-3 of them

    The candles that I've made have a strong cold throw but when burning they don't smell at all. What do you recommend to focus on? Maybe it's the temperature when I add essential oil from lavender? On what precise temperature should I add the essential oil for the beeswax candles?

    Just want to ask you guys this. Is it common to see frosting on soy wax? The white "frosted" looking areas on soy wax melts from time to time.
    Not sure if you're familiar with soy wax, paraffin etc. But I'm just curious about the frosting on soy and how to prevent that. I've read and been told by experts to pour at a lower temp, but I still see the frosting occur from time to time. Thanks!

    • @StandleyHandcrafted
      @StandleyHandcrafted  6 лет назад +1

      It happens and from personal experience seems to be more common with soy than with parasoy or paraffin.
      the best things I have seen to avoid getting frosting is to heat the wax all the way to 180, this helps burn off any impurities that may be in the waax, water, dust, etc.
      Pouring at a lower temperature and even mixing less forcefully has been said to help. I've gotten this only a few times and I could not narrow it down to one specific thing that made it do it. :)

  • @popcornpunch
    @popcornpunch 6 лет назад +2

    I'm hoping you can answer my question... the 1oz fragrance per 1lb of wax is pretty standard but it that 1 fluid ounce or 1 ounce by weight? For example, some people actually weigh out 1oz of fragrance and some people just dump in the entire 1oz bottle of fragrance. Thanks in advance!

    • @StandleyHandcrafted
      @StandleyHandcrafted  6 лет назад +1

      Jessica Pearson if I have the 1oz sample bottles I pour the entire thing in. If I have the large bottles I weigh one fluid ounce

    • @JohnLagrimas
      @JohnLagrimas 6 лет назад +4

      Pretty sure you already found your answer but since I too was looking for this exact q&a I figured I'd chime in just in case anyone else was wondering the same thing. It would be easier to calculate by percentage and it wouldn't really matter what unit of measurement you're using if you're looking for the percentage as long as you use the same for your wax and fragrance. i.e. 10% of fragrance for 1 lb. of wax is 0.1 lbs. of fragrance oil. If you want ounces you'd just have to convert that so 10% of 16 oz. = 1.6 oz. (weight) of fragrance oil and so on.

    Hi! Your vids are always so helpful. I’m using soy 444 how long would you cure for a good HT? Is 24/48 enough to at least test? Do you get a different HT with a wood wick then a regular cotton&paper wick? Thanks so much

    • @StandleyHandcrafted
      @StandleyHandcrafted  6 лет назад +1

      daysi dedios For all soy I wait at least 3-4 days to test them just because the wax I do soft. I like to make sure it’s hardened before I light.
      For curing I typically cure 8-10 days. They’re done before that time but i figure a couple more days won’t hurt.
      As for wood wicks they burn a little hotter so you get a larger melt pool which in turn throws a little stronger. But a larger cotton wick than you’d normally out in a jar can produce the same results.

    • @StandleyHandcrafted
      @StandleyHandcrafted  6 лет назад

      daysi dedios I love Candke Science because they’re so close for shipping and they make great oils. Maple Street is on the east coast and they offer rear oils and great shipping prices for oils.
      Lone star candle is awesome and Aztec.
      EO’s aren’t really great for candles but I do add them occasionally for accent on cold throw. I get a lot of mike through Amazon.

    So I heated preformulated 1 pound of paraffin to 175 took it off heat, and added dye then fragrance oil, l stirred very well. Let sit until 150 to 155 and poured. Samples out and people say no strong hot throw. P.S they all love the shhh scentsy. So do I have to double to 2 Oz or different temps? Also just wax melts. I give out 1 Oz samples.

    Hello again. I found a good site now I believe for my fragrances and starting today on making a "pumpkin color change scented candle"... the most wax (I believe Paraffin) will be 1 lb. I am so confused on so many different opinions. I am going to do the double boiler method and I have a thermometer. I see the 2 TBSP fragrance to 1 lb wax. (Making notes lol) but I believe you just said to let it cool a little before adding the fragrance. I want a nice throw (I am learning the "Candle Language" LOL ) for both hot and cold but certainly for this one... more "Hot Throw" . When I first melt the wax, could you please tell me the exact temp to melt for 1) nice glossy look and not the frosted look) 2) What should the temp be to add my fragrance (This will also be when I add my color change product so the wax will be orange and burn yellow) and 3) What temp to pour? I believe you said to just let it cool but others seem so "Strict" that there must be a temp to do this out for the candle to turn out right. I really appreciate any help you can offer. This will be my first one and my pumpkin mold is ready. Thanks so much! Hello to that Beautiful Sweet young lady beside you!

      Ok, I got the plain candle made last night without anything extra ... just to practice. The candle does weigh a hair over 1 lb so I will do the 2TBSP to 1 lb wax method. Thank you so much.

    Hi, I am having an issue with my scent throws. I made a few successful candles but I increased the amount of wax to 2 lbs of wax and 4 oz of oil. And the throw is not strong like the 1lb wax and 1 oz oil. Burn pool is even, wick is burning well. What could be wrong?

      I have a vanilla cinnamon that I only mix about 25% cinnamon donuts a light addition.

    • @StandleyHandcrafted
      @StandleyHandcrafted  6 лет назад +1

      Betty Antonopoulou You typically add about 10% oil. How much wax are you heating at a time? What’s the weight before you pour them and also what temperature are you adding oil?

    • @StandleyHandcrafted
      @StandleyHandcrafted  6 лет назад

      Betty Antonopoulou Ok that makes sense. I converted 400g to ounces and it’s around 14oz which is way too big for a votive so pillar makes sense.
      For that amount I would add anywhere from 1.2oz-1.4oz of oil.
      About 34g of oil

    I am new making candles and I don't know what I am doing wrong my candles they don't have any hot scent throw. I'm using soy wax 464 tried with different fragrances from aztec, maple street, science candle tested with 3 different cotton wicks and adding fragrances at different temperatures 180, 135 and same result "No scent throw" . I used 1oz of fragrance on my firsts candles then tried 1.5 oz but this didn't help.

    • @StandleyHandcrafted
      @StandleyHandcrafted  5 лет назад +2

      Alma Gutierrez 464 has had some issues the past few months and I think it may be fixed now. A lot of bad reviews for it lately.
      I use the low temp method for my soy and I get much better results. You might try a batch using the low temp method. Heat to melted, add your fragrance oil at 115, stir and pour.

    • @mirnacherkawe9630
      @mirnacherkawe9630 5 лет назад

      I had the exact same issue with 464. Absolutely no hot or cold throw, no matter what I did. I switched to the Ecosoya Q10 and it’s so easy to work with. No sink holes or craters. But the downfall with that one was that you needed a higher fragrance load, which means more money on fragrances. Finally, despite all the bad rap it gets, I just switched to para/soy. Amazing cold and hot throw with 10% fragrance load and looks smooth and silky. I’ll just have to educate customers about the facts of paraffin and that it’s not as bad as they think.

    Good morning! Thanks so much for sharing your tips for those that are interested in making candles. I hope I’m not being a buzzkill, but do the fragrance oils that candle science use organic? Are their other companies that you purchase your fragrance oils from?

    • @dianeespinoza8647

      Charine Bradshaw Organic would not be relevant since Fragrance oils are synthetic.

    • @delena747
      @delena747 5 лет назад

      Charine Bradshaw you are able to buy fragrance oil notes on most candle stores, which are best used to make your own scents. I personally don’t recommend essential oils even mixed in as it is really light.

    Hi again.... I am looking at all of the sites and can't find plain "Lime" scent lol... Wanted to ask you what your view is on using "Essential Oil" for paraffin wax or any wax for that matter. I have watched so many videos that I can't remember if you mentioned it or not. Ty so much. Struggling to find everything for my new project. You are appreciated.

      Brambleberry has a nice lime fragrance oil. 🙂
      As for essential oils they don’t perform well in candles. Fragrance oils are the better option for sure. I have a video that goes into more detail about essential oils.

      Thank You so much. Now.. can you please post me a link on how to pick out my wick? I am struggling. I have seen that it's based on the (Width) of your candle and not the height but I still don't know what to get. I have a candle I want to make that is 4 1/2 in" wide and one is nearly 2" wide. ---- Also.. wicks for "Gel Wax" .... Now I'm seeing you need a different wick? If you have a video explaining this to me, please post the link.. I would so appreciate it... I got nothing done today for researching lol God Bless.
