I see definitely a huge difference in candle hit throw and over all performance when I cure them longer. With 464 after a month is the best hot throw and the wick (CD and Eco) are not mushrooming, like They do after a couple of days or Even two weeks. Candles are burning slower and the surface also looks betre after buring.

Thanks Jeff, I just used up a candle and thought it would be fun to make a candle… now I’m as passionate about making candles as I am about fabricating steel and wood for these past 45 years! Of course I had no idea about the science of a great candle. Nor did I know a thing about welding 46 yr. ago either, and I went to school to learn that too!
So thank you for holding class I am learning a lot. I found you today and will subscribe.

Thank you for the curing part of the video! I’ve been making candles only a few months and everywhere I’ve read or anything I’ve listened to has said “let cool for a couple of hours.” I just started using silicone molds (I use soy) and lo and behold after a couple of hours I tried to take it out and wax wasn’t sturdy enough and there’s two finger marks going down the side of each candle. I just thought “okay I suck at this.” Haha so yes thank you so much

I use different waxes depending on the style of candle I am doing (Pillar, container, soy, paraffin, coconut soy) I have to take into consideration colour, scent, wick. When you change one thing you have to re look at the entire recipe.

Is it a good idea to educate customers on the subtle HT they'll get with natural candles or just brace for negative feedback? I use coco/soy wax

Hi Jeff, love your videos and look forward to seeing more as you post them. I’m really hoping you can help or someone out there can. Do you or anyone out there make Reed diffusers and if so I’d love to hear back. I’ve encountered a problem with my diffusers. I’ve been making them for nearly 2 years with great scent throw. On the weekend I discovered that my diffusers are not throwing any scent unless you put your nose to the reeds. Same oils used from same supplier. Oils are not old since I replenish my supply regularly. I’ve been using rattan reeds so replaced them and tried another test with fibre reeds, shook the bottle as well but still no improvement. Yet same oils are used in candles without any issues. Anyone have any ideas. I’d be ever so grateful if anyone can help. Sue from Australia

Thank you for the info! I started out testing 464 last year and hated it, so I ended up trying Coco Bright, C-6, CCS #12, IGI 6006, and now I'm going to try 444 (since I've heard that it's better during the summer and some 444 users said it gives a better HT than 464). I was planning on double-wicking the 444, but was worried since I couldn't find any 444 users double-wicking. For some reason, 464 gave me the best HT out of all those other waxes, so I must be doing something wrong.
I'm trying to make and sell candles for a fundraiser, but I'm having the hardest time. Making wax tarts/melts is so much easier and way more fun :/

One thing I'm most curious about it, what about the size of your jar? As you pointed out in this video, different waxes take more or less heat to burn, and certain wicks burn hotter or colder, how does the size of the jar your using affect this? Would you want a wick that burns hotter for bigger jars?

  • @walkersplace6379
    @walkersplace6379 2 года назад

So, first off...I love your videos!! Very Informative! Question...I have been matching how much wax I use to how much fragrance to use. For example...1 oz fragrance to 1 pound wax. Is that correct? I'm not understanding the percentage.

    • @nadinewhite993
      @nadinewhite993 2 года назад +3

Hopefully you've figured it out as you posted 5 months ago 😁
As long as you don't exceed the manufacturer's guide to how much fragrance oil to add you're ok.
10% fragrance oil for 464 is a maximum. The wax physically can't hold more than that and the excess fragrance will settle on the bottom or the top, and it will choke the wick and the wick will go out all the time from being too saturated in oil.

Hi, I'm new to candle making. I am struggling with getting a strong scent throw. I'm using coconut/soy wax. I've been using wooden wicks. I've tried a variety of wooden wick sizes with no luck. I get a great scent throw when I'm making the candle but when burning it, I smell nothing. Do you think my wooden wicks are the problem?

Wth, never heard to Hot Throw. Interesting, but think this is for pros, not me. Great video, much appreciated.

Hot throw is just the name for throwing the scent when lit. 🙂

Hi Jeff, I’ve been following you for nearly 12 months and your videos and information you supply are very helpful. One question I have and that is what is the best way to test a new candle scent. For example I’ve made many test candles to test scent and go throw lot of material. I’m wondering if I just want to test my oil combinations scent initially could I make the melts first to test if I like the scent then make couple of candles with different type of wick to do a proper burn and scent test? Sue from Down Under

If you want to test a fragrance oil just to smell then melts are ok but if you’re testing a candle to see if it throws the scent well then you definitely want to make a full candle with that oil and test.
You can test smaller sizes also and not for through as much supply. I do that quite a bit.
And thank you for watching!! 😁

@@StandleyHandcrafted Dear Jeff, thank you very much. Yes I just wanted to test the scent to get the idea before I make the candle. Thank you very much for you response. Sue

Hello im new at making candles I like using soy wax 464, what I don't understand is when you say use about 8% of F.O what is 8% in Ounce term do that mean 2 oz. Of fragrance I'm just trying to get a understanding and a strong throw as well

Fragrance oil can do something called “induced polarity.” Good luck with that.

When speaking of how much oil to add ,if the bottle is 2oz how much oil should go into to a ten pound bag of wax.
    Thank you

Hey do you think about mixing soy and paraffin?

Great video Jeff!! Can you do a wax test on 415 wax because I do get good results but I find myself doing wick testing a lot. I find RRD37 works great for most of my FO in my 9oz straight sided jar. To get a good HT for Vanilla FO’s is very light and subtle but never strong so I gave up on making straight vanilla scented candles. Any suggestions and are you willing to do a test on 415 soy wax because there is others that uses it and have questions as well too… Thanks again and nice work!! 🙂🙂

I hope he does do a test for that wax because it’s the least talked about in the industry. And I’m new to candle making after buying 464 and not getting any HT I decided to try 415 and to my surprise it’s not bad great top too. So please Jeff do a review for us🙏🏾

I am in the same situation using the 415 and I am in a testing period. He talks about an additive to improve the smell, can it also be used with the 415? And what would be the additive?

    Hi!
I am using 464 wax, I noticed you suggested adding either vybar 260 or parrafin to increase the Hot Throw.
Can you assist in what % of either of these you would add to your soy wax please?
And which of these 2 additives do you prefer?
    Thankyou.

Well since he didn’t answer you. Do not put vybar into a pre blended wax. You don’t know how much the manufacturer has already put in and if you add more you could bind your scent and have a dud candle. Vybar is needed for waxes that do not already have additives. You can add paraffin 10-20-30 percent and so on, and another one is stearic acid same percentage. You could actually even make a 100 percent stearic candle. Just got to test test test and spend an enormous amount of money. 😊

Thank you so much for posting this video. I have a question though. I purchased some 8 oz tins from Amazon. What I need to know is what would be the best wick for them. Currently I use a wooden wicks. However I want to use the regular wicks as well any suggestions?

The HTP 104 works well in those tins
