I bought my woodmizer Lt40 because of this channel and all these tips come in handy im by no means an expert like these great people the tips are so helpful I told woodmizer I bought this mill because of them and they better send them some royalties for representing the brand.. it would be a smart move on their part to pay Emerald to represent the brand
Oh, Emerald, are you the Clint Eastwood of the log yard also? "What Not To Do" is an endless journey in life, philosophically speaking. To paraphrase Dirty Harry "A sawyers got to know his (blade's) limitations"! I will try to apply this lesson to other areas of my life since I am not likely to run a sawmill anytime soon..... I recommend everyone tune into Lumber Capital Log Yard to just so they know what having a great instructor looks like.
I built my sawmill based on an LT40 Blade and have basically taught myself how to cut a log into lumber. I helped my dad with his until he unfortunately gave it away for nothin but I was determined to have my own mill so I built one. I enjoy the videos that y'all put out and I've learned a few things as well. God bless y'all and much love from Northeast Alabama

Great job to the green girls!!whoo, hooo, dem dogs get ya sooner or later,I've done it to! But it makes me pay closer attention to my workout on the mill. So important to show this one to millers out there. Later girl's mills. A call in.
Ya, you haven't really run a Woodmizer until you've run into the dog. I don't know why Woodmizer hasn't come up with a way to make it impossible for the machine to eat itself.
Great job! Very practical, even though seemingly common sense, but not having this mindset continually will be costly in the long run. It's tough coming up with fresh content, but you do a great job of it. Your total buy in on your work is what keeps us all watching, thanks for being who you are and not just filling squares!
Thanks, ladies, that advice can used for a vast majority of equipment with blades, including planer. Thanks for sharing your Friday with us, and have a great weekend, and happy grilling! TTFN
A personal thank-you for the fire fighters who have arrived in Canada from the USA. From the west coast too the east and across the country. The increase in lightning strikes are evident. The 1.5 deg increase of the planets temp has increased strikes by 18% The majority of folks in Canada live along the train track which runs from Vancouver to Halifax. 50 miles north of the track their is almost nothing for 1500 miles other than small communities. The conditions are almost unbearable this time of year with black flys and bears in the bush. Combine the conditions with the fire being fueled by ground fuel and it's a big challenge. Thank-you! Carter.... Canada
yeah global warming doesn't have anything to do with these fires. Canadian Forest Management Funding was cut in 2017 because environmental groups sued the government to stop logging of firebreaks and manage lands... If you manage your land correctly and cut in firebreaks then the underbrush doesn't cause the fires to spread as quickly. But Environmentalists are not Forest Management Specialists .. they want things to be magical.. and you just can't live like that today when the population is so much higher.. in 1960 the world population was 3 billion people today its 8 billion people .. thats just about 60 years and the world population has almost tripled. The resources required to support that are extreme and by the time these girls are their grandfathers age another tripling of the population will have happened if there isn't something dramatic .. that means 24 billion people .. its not about the ocean buoy temperatures that were found to be altered by the United Nations back in the 1980's that started off all of this global warming controversy .. its about population growth and how in just another couple generations there won't be enough resources to support the population of the world.. ......... We need to cut down trees and manage the forests and North American Tree Farmers plant Billions of Trees every year and manage the land better than anyone. If you want to worry about something don't worry about the ocean temps going up 0.03°f ... worry about how the world will feed 20+ billion people in just over 50 years.. because you will be here to experience that.. or your children will and its going to be utter chaos. You think the price of eggs are high today? There won't be any eggs at any price. You will be eating Factory Manufactured Meat grown in Rubbermaid Storage Containers.

Sawing into dirt, rocks, or metal are some of the most common things to do to damage a blade. I know that not everyone can take the time to clean or wash their logs, or use a metal detector to check for metal, but it sure can help. The saw that saws through the bark before the blade can help a lot, but a rock on the far side can still do damage.
Two minor points on when to change your blade is that the time you think you are losing is made up for by the increased production of a fresh blade. You will also save time at the sharpening machine if you don't need to grind the teeth as much. You will also get more resharpens. For those who don't know sharpening you must take light cuts with the grinder as heat will destroy the saw tooth steel and tends to wear the grinding wheel shape. Wet grinding is far superior if possible.
I used to cut pipe for oil field down well stuff. K55, L80, and the dreaded P110 pipe. We always used this water/oil mixed coolant that looked exactly like milk. We had to make a few first cuts at a lower speed to break it in. Our blades only lasted 12 hours, not much way around that.
Good video, as always. There is sure some good information in it. it is always interesting to see what other people believe about things. Good video again! Thank you for making it!
Super video Emerald, I was looking for one last night but I guess it was a busy night for you. Always interesting to see and hear about the equipment you have and the challenges in running it. . Thankfully my band saw doesn't get the same amount of use as your mill , hence I don't need to change my blade as often. Nice video, thank you both. Enjoy the weekend
Just an unsolicited tip. The debarker doesn't clean the ends of the logs. If for whatever reason the ends get dirty, grab your chainsaw and cut a little off. It saves your blades more than you would think. Great videos Donna.
@@tomwilliams8675 Not really. Water is a coulant, never a lubricant. Some mineral oils will stain the wood a bit, but in the amount you use it, is is neglect-able. Many mineral oils won't stain at all. Most mineral oils don't dissolve in water. Glocerol/glycerine does. It may make wood look wet for some time, but it will evaporate without trace. Mostly you add 5 to 10% glycerol to water. The harder the wood, the more glycerol.
I’m not a lumber jack and I will now show you my lack of knowledge when comes to a saw mill, when you refer a log as a “Kant or cant “ I tried to look up the meaning and all I can find is “Kant hook , cant hook” and they are for rolling logs. Need some help understanding this .
Log Kant is the waste product created by rounded edges you cut off when squaring up all 4 sides of a log. Some call the outside 4 slabs and the middle section with the pith left over the Kant. Not 100% which is really right.
Number 1 should be “read your owners manual” this will ensure you don’t leave anything to chance, as it happened when you girls installed the carbide teeth blade and it snapped. It snapped because you didn’t follow the instructions given in the manual that clearly says that it will cause blade breakage if a particular adjustment isn’t done.

i think i would use a hand held metal detector to check every log before its cut. incase there are nails or metal lurking in the log

Good advice. Another thing you may want to avoid is running logs that are known to have metal in them. Those logs can dull up a blade in no time.

Was it just a coincidence that Roxxy was laying down to take a nap under the LT-40 when you're taking about running the blade into the dogs? 😂
You told things lots of people who have run mills for years didn’t know . Me to😊❤😊
Thanks for the informative video
I think I have done all of that with my mill. But then again making mistakes on a mill is called time in grade. Good stuff

Thanks Em for the info. Good job!
I noticed the " never do this list" ties in with bandsaw safety!Hardwoods like maple and cherry will wear out blades faster.

Your eyes are still incredible... A Question: how long do you use the blade guides ? (before they are worn out)
That's not just water, what do add to it to give it that color, just wondering.
Em! Hope your grandpa and dad have a good father's day!

Well done ladies very informative. Thank you.👍♥️♥️
Wonderful !
Thank you! Good info.
...if a blade snaps can it fly off and whip the operator?
Off topic here but what is the metal used for the sawmill bed and frame? I just got a quote for over 300 dollars per stick of 3"x 3"x x 1/4" x 24' 😒
you don't have automatic metal detection to shut down your saw before it hits metal
Just an unsolicited tip. The debarker doesn't clean the ends of the logs. If for whatever reason the ends get dirty, grab your chainsaw and cut a little off. It saves your blades more than you would think. Great videos Donna.

HAHA! I LOVE the shirt! Great humor 😀
Enjoyed the video. Watch out woodmizer might want you as a visual owners manual.
GREAT job LADYS😊😊😊😊😊

Good info.
The lubricant is really a coulant. Dish soap is a bad lubricant better to use glycerine or a mineral oil.
Mineral oil won't mix with water. The soap just keeps the blade clean which reduces friction so it acts like a lubricant.
Mineral oil will stain the wood. I think Woodmizer knows what they're doing when they tell their customers what to use. 🤝🤝👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

A shot of K-Y shaken into the reservoir works great… (water based) like STP for water

Will LCLY ever invest in a circular saw mill,I'm sure the investment is very expensive, and would you like it?
Those blades are tested to a much higher tension then you’re going to put them through. Don’t be afraid to make sure they’re good and tight.
Awesomeness
