You are an incredible father and leader, and you’re well blessed with your girls and your entire family. What you share with us is a blessing thank you be safe my friend.
I so agree1
I am continually amazed at the ability of Em and Jade in handling such weight. As someone previously pointed out, "two supermodels running a sawmill." Very proud parents, to be sure!
you struck gold with those wonderful hard working knoledgeble daughters they can handle anything
Hey Ken, nothing wrong with new ideas. If they work, cha-ching! But always remember "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
You struck gold with your family!
Boss got a sweet system going ... Selective harvesting impressed me .
Keep swinging, Boss. You miss every shot you don't take. You've got a great family and business. Good Luck!
Cool dude. Dad AKA Boss Man has come long way in front of the camera. You've got a great family, and with all of you working together, who knows, you may hit on that million dollar idea yet. Thanks, Emerald, Jade and all of you for the informational and fun videos!
I'm not one to talk, boss man, but keep your eyes on the camera till after you say good bye. It'll be a plus for your channel. Not a logger, I'm retired and had a teeney weeney lawn care business from "77 to '21. My mom is from Philly and we vacationed in the Poconos but family illnesses forced us to sell the cottage back in '66.
I noticed ya'll's location looks to be 100 miles or so from there. I remember it as a child paradise but my last visit was '56. I did get up there for a day in '84 and my, the changes but interestingly, everything on our pebble road had not been updated. Unfortunately, I have spent little time in Pennsylvania myself for way too many reasons to get into
I'm really impressed with your fortitude and the positive family dynamic that is evident when watching you all get things done.
Don't injure your lower back cause that cuts your energy supply and I see you need plenty of that to tackle all them trees
Cheers
jsigur
Thanks to all of you for all you add as a family. I have learned so much watching and listening and especially like it when Dad shares the harvest side but then the woods with a saw is one of my favorite places to be!!! Thanks and Blessings to all. Rick
God bless you friend and your business!!
God Bless you and your family!! Love to see the "old" values still alive and well/ prospering.
Thanks Boss man, Rome wasn't built in a day, but never stop trying! Thanks ladies for videoing and sharing. Have a great evening! TTFN
Rome....They're still building, lol
@alisciamarotta3888 it's part of and old saying, Rome wasn't built in a day, but it only took one day to burn it down.
What an education one can get just following the ups and downs of the Lumber Capital Yard. Great channel!
Good job Bossman
Way to roll, Boss. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Good job Boss
We fathers need more channels like yours to show our daughters that they can be beautiful and still work harder than most men. Emerald and Jade are the type of role models young girls and women need. Not the types that just focus on what makeup or fashion is important at the time
never give up on your ideas Boss Man, one of these days you never know!
It is all about new way to get more profit and staying in business. The work ethic in your family is great to watch.
What a fantastic family with high ethics and hard work orientated basics.
Thanks, for giving everyone a glimpse of the logistics of logging. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Quarter saw white oak makes beautiful tables and any piece that shows the pattern of the quarter saw white oak. Great Video. Keep up the great work you do.
Thanks, Boss Man. I don’t understand much about the lumber business but I have learned a great deal from your channel.
I’ve learned a few things about life from so many folks I’ve met. In my opinion, the dreamers who are not afraid to fail and who are not afraid to succeed are a special breed.
It is said that we do not learn from success near as much as we learn from failures. I respect you for you work ethic, you love of family and that you dare to dream.
That skidder is full on awesomeness. 💪👍🏻
Persistence after failure does lead to success. Keep trying, keep thinking.
How eloquently explained, without experimentation on night or day dreaming ideas ,....there would be no progress! Keep it coming please! Cheers
Good job Boss man!!
Gotta make some
splinters b 4 you get
the gold!!
You got this, GO
TEAM !!
👍🐺🧙♂️🦊🤙
Always so informative
I imagine the Lumber business is like any business that utilizes natural or organic products it is one big running gamble to keep up with the market /product availability and changing costs of fuel/repairs etc. That part I don't envy you, but working in the woods in that beautiful area makes me very envious. Thank you and the girls for showing us your ups and downs of Logging.
I used to work for GM at their Proving Ground in Milford, Michigan. I implore you to search it on google maps and go to the satellite view. Almost everything we did on the proving ground was experimental. A lot of times we were following up on ideas and concepts that emerged many years befor that had nowhere to go due to the technology of the time. We revisited those early ideas using new technology to find out if they were viable. One example is: EV. Electric Vehicles including Hybrids were old ideas that had no future until new technology came along, like better batteries or methods of turning kinetic energy into stored energy. So we ran tests with the old ideas to see if current technology could make use of them. Literally everything we did was experimental. When you do that kind of "work" for your livelihood you don't call the ideas that didn't work a "failure", you add that information to your repertoire. Advancement is an amalgamation of ideas that didn't work as planned added to ideas that did. What the LCLY did was experiment with an idea, and the results will be categorized and saved for future reference. I personally think that's what makes some of us "tick." ben/ michigan
I SALUTE ALL YOU DO KEEP ON TRYING AND DO WHAT EVER IT TAKES GOD BLESS YOUR FAMLIY
Here’s a suggestion for some of your smaller cut hardwood pieces . There are gunsmiths and gun stock fabricators out there that may be interested in purchasing pieces that have a nice grain pattern in various types of wood . Not sure if it’s profitable on your end but custom made gun stocks with a beautiful grain pattern can be expensive . I thought that I would pass this along as I would hate to see it go up in smoke . Thanks for your time …
hey'd love some nice grain walnut for stocks. Not everyone wants laminate or plastic.
That seems like a good idea
Jake you have a good suggestion. Walnut, maple and cherry can all be used for good gun stocks. High grade pieces of European and Turkish walnut soak up some significant money for stock makers. It is a specialist trade though and would take some research to get up to speed on what the market wants, etc. The other part of it that might require capital outlay is getting a building facility to store the stock-wood while it dries. Then you have to come up with a marketing plan...I.e. sell mail order to individuals? Sell to firearms manufacturers? Or find an existing distributor who is willing to stock the stocks and sell to retail market. This would be a fun project to research and come up with a business plan. Could be a decent side business on it's own merits.
Never stop thinking outside the box. Don't be afraid to involve the rest of the family in your ideas. The first idea might not work, but it might trigger something else that can lead to something that does work. Just continuing to do it the same old way doesn't get you ahead.
Thanks for the video
Keep swimming Boss Man, another great episode of real talk. Still hoping there's a way to voice a concern without public knowledge. LCLY is killing it salute
Your videos are a pleasure to watch. The smell of fresh cut lumber is hard to beat
Make sure you keep the inflicted firewood local to control spread. That why it’s illegal to bring firewood into Maine here. It’s primarily to keep out the Emerald Ash Borer though.
Thank you bossman ,for telling a story with experience about woodworking ...today seems to be the beginning of new content coming out unlike yesterday ,continue your work the main thing is to save
This the best vid I have seen LCLY put out yet. Thank you!
👍👍👍👍👍👍 thanks for your time and info
As always, be safe out there :)
Some ideas fly...
Some don't...
But no ideas...will never fly
😉🇨🇦
Wow I really missed it with my guess . I could not have come up with what the Boss just explained. That was really involved and my hat is off to the Boss.
Hard working family right here! I just realized that Emerald looks a lot like Scarlett Johansson!!!
WELL DONE.... THANK YOU 🙏🙏😊
I’m a Pennsylvania boy and I’m loving your videos! What a great family! Can’t wait for the next video each time! You should tell us sometime why you named the girls after gem stones.
Always exciting to hear a businessman try to innovate on the fly. Mostly these ideas fall short of expectations but clearly you are thinking outside the box, this is what makes a business successful. Over the years I have done this many times and some work most don't but I have never given up trying to improve, kudos to you and the girls Ken.
Very well said... its a business you all run and business is supply and demand. You sell what sells. Ken, your complete family Rocks! As the father of 2 daughters (24 and 20 years old), home-schooled and hard working like Emerald and Jade, we watch your videos together as a family... there are very few things we agree to watch together. LCLY is one! Thank you.
Well my 2 cents, dearly from Québec, Eastern Townships.
As a family business, integrated sawmilling, your next level of integration is building, cabins, chalets, small houses using the maximum of your wood. Total environnemental friendly integrated business from logging to building. Those beautiful kids are "young", that's the biggest value of your business. "Ride on!"
Two Ideas:
1) Cut the log in a manor that you get (1) 5/4 board from the top and bottom, (2) 5/4 quarter sawn boards from the middle and (4 or more) 8/4 rift sawn boards from the middle. This would give you a strong hardwood mix to start with and rift sawn white oak and red oak can sell at a premium.
2) Cut the oak logs in a manor to be used for trailer decking/machinery decking. You don't have to worry nearly as much as checking/drying issues for decking material.
Great explanation! Run your lumber yard profitable so you stay in business. Cash flow keeps you going.👍
Omg look the chains on the tires it a +
Thank You! These were a pair of very interesting videos, and I eagerly await the third. I play with a Logosol F2 Chainsaw mill and greatly value the out-of-the-box thinking on this channel. It carries over into my play very well.
Lots of moving parts to juggle! I know you'll figure it out. Most new things I try don't work the first time. But I do learn.
You struck gold a while back only it's in Jade and Emerald.
You have to keep trying! You never know what will work until you do it!
Oak shingles? Huh, never even thought about that. Never considered anything but cedar for shingles..
Beautiful family business 😊
Bad ass!!love y’all!
100 % correct ; You don't fall it , unless you can sell it .
When the Boss man talks I listen because I totally trust this family and stand fully behind them 💗
Our mill was a manual LT40 and did not have the lift bed rollers. To get that first flat cut we placed a short sticker board on the last bed rail to compensate for the log taper.
I’ve cut by hand in Maine for over 25 years. Used 540 cable skidder for most all of it. Have 648l grapple makes it soo much easier. I would like to know more about your excavator. 5 years ago I bought a Deere 60G excavator with a Valby 55HD log bucket. Sorts and stacks wood in the landing. Really increased productivity a lot. I enjoy your videos. Jmtc
Love you guys, the family/business concept is very interesting. Always have enjoyed the show, its getting better by the day. Bbq shows are a hilight for sure. thank you for taking us along!!
Innovation is the key to success. It took about 2,000 tries before a working light bulb came to be. Look at how successful that became. I have always found that the best ideas come when you’re not thinking about it (sleeping). So just keep on trying, you’re doing fine.
Great idea. But maybe you can get that third roller added to the mill for the shorter logs
I second that idea 💡
Thoughty analysis. Great business process
Also funny, but I think everyone with a mill these days, is having this exact same problem- Logs piling up in the woods, faster than we can handle them. What's a guy to do? Leave them to rot in the forest, or turn to rock solid, heavily-checked cants buried in your shed...
Thanks for the interest video,God bless your family
My first thought from the first video was that you were making swamp mats for a bad spot in your logging road to reduce erosion - they can be pulled up again and moved to another site when one site is done with.
No one can condemn an idea that didn't pan out, that's how we learn and progress, I can totally relate to you Bossman, my family and I have tried different ideas, some have been profitable some have cost us. The main thing is the effort and the desire that causes us to press on after that it seems like no matter what it all works out somehow.
You are doing an an amazing job figuring out the non fiqurable. Keep up the good work!
Great commercial! 😊
Keep trying boss you'll hit it one day 🐝
I recall when gypsy moths were defoliating trees back in the 70s, while I lived in PA. I thought the state spraying program put an end to that.
Hope you don't have ash trees up there being attacked by the emerald bark beetle. Now in VA all of our ash trees were removed and sent to the mill.
Thx Bossman
Love you all! ❤
I'm out here at the base of Mt. Rainier in "Timber Country". Love to see you all at the Logging Festival in Buckley.
An idea that doesn't work is never a failure as long as you really try and then learn from the experience. BTW some of my best solutions have come in dreams.... keep chasing them. Cheers!
Boss Man I like the idea, I get it, Save the good lumber and firewood the poorer part best of both worlds. I've done some bad logs similar way and got some good lumber from it Grandmother used to say waste not want not and it is so true. The ladies will figure out a way to do this plan you raised them right and they are Pro's Cheers! John from N E GA
I really appreciate hearing how you organize your work and your business. It gives me great perspective, whether or not it impacts my life directly, It helps me appreciate others' approach to business, how they work, and why things cost what they do ETC. To add to other comments, I always appreciate your sequences in the videos, and, if I may say so, they are getting smoother but always real.
We've been 3 years here without an acorn drop, since the damn gypsy moths ripped through (Eastern Ontario). What a disgusting summer of the forest literally raining caterpillar crap, lol.
What can I say? Love the videos, and the family work ethic. keep up the good work.
Great video, thanks for sharing. 👍
There's nothing wrong with trying something new and not having it work. One thing is for certain, if you don't try and come up with solutions, nothing will work. Some of the greatest of inventions came as a result of repeated failures. Life is a learning process. Press on! Take care and God bless. 👍🇺🇸
I think Edison said, "I know a 1001 ways how NOT to make a light bulb!"
Inventory vs just ontime delivery can smooth cash flow. So a reasonable inventory of known products in demand can smooth things out over a period of months. This would allow some experimentation with new product goals. Keeping a steady cash flow pace is key.
The economic situation in our country and yours is dramatic right now. Turn off the news and reduce your stress. You all know what you are doing. You will be successful reaching reasonable goals.
If you can not imagine it, you can not do it: so lots of ideas is what it takes!! Could the saw dust be turned into pellets for pellets stoves profitably at your scale of operation? Unfortunately I have no idea for the problem presented.
Well, first of all, thank you for trying to come up with innovative ideas to help improve your production. And I'm sure the girls appreciate you for trying to make their job a little easier by reducing the weight they have to deal with on a daily basis. Don't stop writing down your ideas. They may not all be viable, but some with a little adjustment may work quite well, or lead to better ideas. Thank you for sharing all of this with your family of viewers, and all the best wishes to all of you for attaining the right balance of things for your business to prosper and succeed wildly beyond your dreams. Only good wishes and hopes for your success and happiness from Alaska.
Outstanding.
Great vid
You’re old man is a cool guy. My father is really just like him just in his own career (machinist) now maintenance coordinator. Reminds so much of him tho, wish i could go to work with him.
You seem like such a mellow nice man with strong ethics and business smarts. Would love to buy some wood from you but Montana is a long way away from Pennsylvania!
Makes sense, what he was trying to do.
You have to take a first step, sometimes a misstep or other times a step in the right direction. You never know if the step is in the right direction is a correct one or not till you take it. Keep trying new ideas like you do and you will find the steps you need.
You never know until you find out.
save the branches run a wood chipper . Clean forrests and you can sell the product . Garderners love the wood chips .
I like the idea of siding. It would last so long and could be a big seller. I am not sure how many homes have this. Would you ever consider treating the wood for shingles? Red Oak sales will be another story I will have to do some research. Perhaps some first and second premium could be an idea since you have drying capabilities. You have to try some different things to see which ones stick. Keep up with the good work. God bless you all.👍♥️♥️
Very good Video 👍 👍
You are smart, I cleared lots and did the cull for the mill. You do you and the girls are smart too. Don't worry about the comments
