"Normally sunshine-filled stories." Wait, so did we all just forget that moment in "Tales of the Abyss" where a child drowned to death in front of our eyes and we were powerless to stop it? Or the bits in "Tales of Vesperia" where Yuri decided to become the anime Punisher? Or that wonderful bit in "Symphonia" where we learned exactly what "becoming an angel" actually entails...? I mean, to each their own, but I've always seen the series as being pretty dark beneath a façade of happiness.
Symphonia yeah. The rest...eh. Maybe some dark moment, but on the whole it's typical anime RPG 'believe in friendship' nonsense. Man I should really finish Symphonia sometime...
I played the demo of this game and in few seconds I was already laughing in an optional conversation between the protagonists, in most Tales games it take me several hours to empathize with them in order to laugh in their conversations. For the demo alone it looked like a very good game, and now after seeing this review, I'm more excited :)
I found it kind of funny they were talking about how light hearted all the Tales games are, but I'm like looking back at Xillia 1 and 2 thinking all "I don't know about THAT". I mean, Graces and Zestiria, they are not, lol. Either way, still really looking forward to the game. Even if from what it looks like combat is, I'd have preferred it be closer to the Xillia series style instead.
I don't think it fits any of the mainline series at all lol, Zesteria was the brightest we got tbh and having this as it's backstory almost balances that out.
I didn't know this was related to it. Though it has me thinking now, since all the religious overtones and "Sorey is Jesus!" stuff in Zestiria was a bit of a turnoff. Still, I remember Graces F being pretty 'bright'.
If anyone's on the fence about this game, It's a very great game. After finishing Symphonia, Abyss, Vesperia, and Xillia, Berseria pretty much beat Vesperia for my favorite spot.
While I agree that the story is considerably darker than most of the other tales games, the story is essentially the golden age of Berserk, or at the very least the beginning part that sets the main character into a need for vengeance. Hell, the name of the game and the land definitely give it away.
Wow, "best Tales yet" is a big accomplishment. I'm only around 2-3 hours in, but I'm loving it. It has a slow opening, but the characters are excellent, and so far, they have real chemistry. Great world building too.

Im curious too. course im also curious if yoru hyped for the tales of vesperia port we didnt get (they are releasing it on ps4. and its comming iwth flynn and...i forgot lil pirates name...cahracters you only got to use in the ps3 port that was JP exclusive)
This girl reminds me of guts in the beginning of his journey, he was always after vengeance for what Griffith did but then puck changed him over his adventure, puck was the only one giving guts happiness and hope in the world so he could stop his vengeance to Griffith.
MLGMickey As That's because this game's general theme/setting/story is almost a direct copy of Berserk's lol. It's actually kind of infuriating that so many people don't even know this through no fault of their own. They just haven't read Berserk to actually know about the similarities which there are an incredible amount of. way too many to be coincidental.
problem is this game fail to make the main character as interesting as guts, she just come off as edgy girl getting edgier the closer she is to her goal (granted i haven't finished the game but 50 hours in and i still can't like the main protag is a problem in itself)
I'm relatively new to the Tales games and have only played Zestiria and Berseria, but I like Berseria a lot more. The characters, story and gameplay have definitely improved so hopefully with the next game there will be more improvements (particularly maps and enemy variety)
Tales of Symphonia is my favorite game of all time, hands down. I thought it was unanimous among Tales of fans that Symphonia was the best. Any other Tales of game I've tried to play really hasn't compared. I see there are many fans in the comment section, so for someone who loved everything about Symphonia, any recommendations in the Tales of series that I should look into? After watching the reviews for both Zestiria and this one, I'm not sure I would be interested. I really value story and characters I can connect with, as well as environment. It seems these don't really have that to offer. Whereas, Symphonia had all of the above.
nesekaba while I can’t say anything about Zestiria, I can say that Berseria is really good. Symphonia is also my favorite Tales game, because of how it brings both the light and dark sides of people’s hearts. It’s not a black and white story, there’s so much depth to it. Berseria is similar, but not as intense. Still a fun game - battle is engaging, the visuals are stunning, and the characters are well-rounded. Just not as much as ToS :)
vesperias combat systam was so broken i hated it... made the game way to easy i was able to spam tidle wave ovet and over and over... i got sick of hearing TIDLE WAVE BLABLABALA from rita
geez. gravity rush 2, kingdom hearts 2.8 and now this?? and we will get nioh and horizon next month. dammit sony i know you got a lot of exclusives. but you shouldnt just release them with little time in between. cant keep up. 😅
StaticShock42 yeah. Forgot to mention yakuza 0..just getting overwhelmed with all this games and upcoming. Lol. Glad that atleast persona 5 will.be in april. Least ill have time to finish up the others by then
Picking this up first thing tomorrow morning. Been waiting for it for some time. Also the environments definitely look less generic than the dungeons from Zestiria. Kind of a small detail but as somebody who rides a skateboard goofy, it's going to bother the hell out of me that I can't switch stances on the hoverboard LOL!
2 THINGS ONE: How can anyone forget the amazing Yuri Lowel, That's a characters I'll never forget! Second: Eizen runs, poses and fights VERY Similar to Snow Villiers from FF13.
Great review and I love her vocals here. She should do more reviews. Anyways, i'm interested in watching the storyline so time to hit up someone who's playing this and uploading it on RUclips!
This is actually my first "Tales of" game, I never play any of them before, and I really like this one. The lore is new to me so I confused myself a lot throughout the story, but still enjoyable. The characters are great too. From the beginning to nearly the end of the game, I actually hate Velvet's personality, I do understand why she acted so emo, but still, sometimes, I'm kinda tired. Two characters that I really like are Eizen, and Magilou. These are really stable characters, Rokuro's not so much, he's just plain cool and badass, but Eizen and Magilou are the best for me.
@Evil Koala Lol, neither. I said I understand her circumstances, I felt bad for her, but like I said, sometimes I'm just tired of her that's all, am I not allowed to feel tired of someone's personality just because they had a rough experience?
Why does she keep saying Tales games of the past have had "sunshine-filled stories?" I've only played Symphonia and Abyss fully, and I wouldn't say either of those were happy-go-lucky.
The current art style will still look good after many years, so they should keep it mostly like this. I really think this will last against time for a long time.
I would give the story a 10 best tales story since symphonia, combat 7 because the soul gauge limits you combat ability and fluidity. The gaining and sacrificing of soul gauge limits the characters full combat ability. Also there are chain mistakes, this is most notable with bee enemies in where it is easy for them to stun you and causes you to go into a chain of stuns and lost soul gauge rapidly and bosses make it difficult to get soul bad limiting the fluidity of combat. If you make one mistake it can chain into multiple and cost either 2 or 3 soul gauges leaving you with one making it difficult to gain it back. The items were very fustrating with inability to heal if you had status ailments and having ailments removes 1 soul gauge making it fustrating to keep it up. also enemies do constant statuses. It also gets tedious to not have special artes and only basic combat artes each with a corresponding element. It led to a lot of customization but, without special artes it became bland and some enemies became really fustrating due to this and made the games combat feel not as strong. It also feels like characters are weaker compared to zestiria which had good character balance. Where i liked the customization is in enhancements. They have way more usefulness now with the crystals you find from defeating strong enemies. World 6 it is bland and boring compared to zestiria and felt this strongly in the dungeons. Overall 8 amazing story, combat is ok not great but not bad but has major flaws and dungeons need more variation and more uniqueness to them.
This is £6.49 on PlayStation Network atm. Fantastic price for an amazing game. A 100 hour game with very little bloat for less than £10 is such a great buy.
Anyone else watching this after beating Tales of Arise? If you're here and haven't played Arise yet...go play it ITS THE BEST GAME EVER!!!! :D Also video has 8.8k likes to match the score :o
So im having problems getting Tales of Berseria. I had a preorder for it and when it came time for it to download, it didnt. I checked the psn page and its saying that the product cannot be purchased at this time. Help?
The Xilia Subseries, Vesperia, Abyss and Symphonia are all better. Seriously. I'd highly recommend any of those, particularly Symphonia, which was my introduction to the series.
Velvelt didn't have anything unique about her other than she kicks everything. Tales of Berseria however isn't so much of uniqueness, the final boss reminds me of Mithos, in fact they made him act too much like Mithos and the guy who was with the final boss seems more like the guys who were with Mithos. They didn't explain her power too much how was her power different from other Therions cause it wouldn't make any sense if she devour but goes to an earth pulse and still have that power, how was she able to beat them even when she didn't have lord of calamity's power...but I let that pass though since they had that child.
Tales of Zestira is just as dark if not darker than Tales of Berseria. In Tales of Beseria you have a main character with a dark back story, in Tales of Zestiria you have a hopeful character in a dark, utterly hopeless world that needs to prevail. There's not much sunshine in Tales of Zestiria.
I must admit, the combat in this game looks awesome! And then I heard the dreaded words: "Tons of mandatory back tracking and very limited fast travel." - Unfortunately, I have outgrown the patience required for such nonsense!
In terms of memorable cast and plot, the original Symphonia still rests hard in my mind as a peak. I started with Graces F, then Symphonia, Symphonia Dawn Of The New World and lastly Xillia 1. Xillia 2 just didn't strike me as any reason to return for another full scale jrpg time sink, Zestiria I'm super on the fence about considering its cast just looks super dull and Berseria seems like the most mundane of them all in terms of the series fatigue catching up with me, as well as the game not really using the PS4 for anything other than stability of a tired look. I'm thinking though to scrape a 360 from somewhere just for Vesperia as it seems to be a hell of a title for most, thoughts anyone?
Symphonia was one of the first RPGs I ever played and I'm happy to hear that it stands out for other people among the newer tales games, because I honestly felt that graces, xillia, and now this title just don't stand up to symphonia. Glad I'm not just being a tales hipster lol
The gameplay of Symphonia is still very early and really weak at times but the plot and the cast tie it down hard for one of the most well executed Tales games. I feel the plots have been just teetering on novel concepts and mediocre execution since then.
Vesperia is one of the best ones imo. The plot is good... at least for the first two acts; it gets wonky in the third act. But every character is great. I think it has the best cast of characters in any Tales game so far. Combat is a big step above Symphonia If you don't feel like buying a 360, you can import the Japanese PS3 version of Vesperia. It has a lot more extras and 2 additional party members. There are a few good translation guides online, so going with the PS3 version is less expensive. If you decide to go that route I can link you to the translation guide I used if you like. I strongly recommend the game to any Tales fan.
I agree with ya on symphonia being the best for cast and plot, (whoo for sheena and kratos dood!!) vesperia is a damned close second and bar the little kid has an equally as awesome cast, both the bad guys and good guys, as for zestiria the characters are surprisingly charming to the point that I decided to beat it in the end but dang is the gameplay and equipment system horrible compared to previous titles and berseria doesn't look like it's fixing a lot of those problems, my honest opinion? go for vesperia after waiting to see if berseria is actually good dood.
"charming to the point that I decided to beat it in the end" charming enough to even bother beating it is a rather backhanded compliment don't you think? I can think of plenty of games and shows that were "just enough for me to finish".
8.8 is somewhat generous for what's a fairly by-the-numbers Tales game, but it's certainly an improvement over Zestiria (which I couldn't even bother finishing).
I was at first like, oh my goodness we have an actual review by someone who actually know the series. And it is Tales, yes, good job IGN. But then "I can barely recall the names of past tales heroes"...I'm sorry what?! I understand that they totally changed the tone of the characters versus others and you want to show that the characters are truly different from the past games, that doesn't mean the others have really bad generic forgettable characters. What about Luke, hard to forget that annoyance, or the great country bumpkin Stahn. While I do like the review, I just can't agree with that statement.
Tales of Data (my idea for a tales of game) genre: SciFi Fantasy combat mechanics: Similar to naruto shippuden ultimate ninja storm 2. however instead of 1 on 1 battles, your party will be involved in fights with both bosses and monsters. main protagonist's abilities: Since main protagonist is also sharing his/her body with an AI, his/her abilities will be similar to the abilities of Shadow of mordor. anything else you guys think should be added, reply ^^

DarkPaladinX77 The game that will get that 9.9 is Kingdom Hearts 2.8 lol
Nioh will get 9.9 confirmed lol
i doubt it. i feel they'll keep comparing it to dark souls when they should be looking at onimusha.
Clavitz Rain It feels exactly like a samurai dark souls
I haven't loved a Tales game since Vesperia, I'm hoping this one rekindles my love for the series.
So how did that go? ^^
Im curious too. course im also curious if yoru hyped for the tales of vesperia port we didnt get (they are releasing it on ps4. and its comming iwth flynn and...i forgot lil pirates name...cahracters you only got to use in the ps3 port that was JP exclusive)
Well... did it?
@@epikgaeymurs8244 It did for me. Haven't played a Tales game since Tales of the Abyss for 3DS. Beat this two days ago. Broke my heart man.
I got this 2 years ago and forgot I had it until today
This girl reminds me of guts in the beginning of his journey, he was always after vengeance for what Griffith did but then puck changed him over his adventure, puck was the only one giving guts happiness and hope in the world so he could stop his vengeance to Griffith.
MLGMickey As That's because this game's general theme/setting/story is almost a direct copy of Berserk's lol. It's actually kind of infuriating that so many people don't even know this through no fault of their own. They just haven't read Berserk to actually know about the similarities which there are an incredible amount of. way too many to be coincidental.
Yeah, I mean it's even in the name - Berseria, Berserk.
problem is this game fail to make the main character as interesting as guts, she just come off as edgy girl getting edgier the closer she is to her goal (granted i haven't finished the game but 50 hours in and i still can't like the main protag is a problem in itself)
I dunno. Those environments look beautiful to me. So excited to play this.
Looks very low poly and low resolution textures.
It's the same game engine from the 360 days. Stuff on PS4 looks slightly better than Vesperia on the 360. That is a travesty.
It reminds me of a end of a ps2 type of game. With lower PS3 graphics
I also didn't have a single issue with the environments, on the contrary I loved many of them and I really love the visuals in this game.
Berseria is second only to Symphonia.
Vesperia.
It may be the best story wise. But I have yet to play a Tales game with a better battle system than Vesperia.
Trey2Da Funny enough, Graces' combat is one of the most loved in the series. But yes, Vesperia has a very fun one.
Trey2Da idk vesperia story felt better. the writing overall was top notch
vesperias combat systam was so broken i hated it... made the game way to easy i was able to spam tidle wave ovet and over and over... i got sick of hearing TIDLE WAVE BLABLABALA from rita
Then....don't spam tidal wave?
Pretty easy solution to your problem there.
+Spyrite Never played Vesperia, for me it's definitely Graces.
geez. gravity rush 2, kingdom hearts 2.8 and now this?? and we will get nioh and horizon next month. dammit sony i know you got a lot of exclusives. but you shouldnt just release them with little time in between. cant keep up. 😅
Tselel Leb It's like every month has at least 1 ps4 exclusive that I'm looking forward too.
StaticShock42 yeah. Forgot to mention yakuza 0..just getting overwhelmed with all this games and upcoming. Lol. Glad that atleast persona 5 will.be in april. Least ill have time to finish up the others by then
Don't forget Nier Automata. Well, the release date in the West is early March, but it comes out in Japan next month :P
Meanwhile on Xbox One, gamers are still playing Halo, Forza and Gears lmao. 😂😂😂
and with the cancellation of scalebound they don't seem too happy
So freaking Hyped for the "Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition" release, was and is still my favourite of all the Tales of franchise! 🤓
I'll never forget tales characters
"Sunshine filled story of tales games"
...Have we been playing the same games? Paper Mario games are sunshine filled, not Tales games.
I agree, that statement puzzled me.
SkaiCyan Actually, Super Paper Mario is kinda dark...
damn I want it but I'm gonna have to wait. KH takes priority and I gotta save for Switch and Zelda.
Can`t wait for Zelda, hoping I can get a Switch close to release, preorders are sold out right now.
DEATHxTHExKIDx1 switch? u mean that half consoe that uses sd cards and can even do 30fps? i love zelda also but ill pass
Endless Eternal yep that console. I skipped the Wii and wiiU so I'm getting the Switch.
I still think nothing Nintendo makes will surpass the gamecube.or the legendary n 64
+Endless Eternal The Switch is also a handheld system. Did you really expect PS4 Pro-level power?
Picking this up first thing tomorrow morning. Been waiting for it for some time.
Also the environments definitely look less generic than the dungeons from Zestiria. Kind of a small detail but as somebody who rides a skateboard goofy, it's going to bother the hell out of me that I can't switch stances on the hoverboard LOL!
8.8
you're welcome
Thank you kind sir/madam
Ario *NO CAPES*
-Edna(The Incredibles)
Why the hell there is no mention of the 2 player split screen?
2 THINGS
ONE: How can anyone forget the amazing Yuri Lowel, That's a characters I'll never forget!
Second: Eizen runs, poses and fights VERY Similar to Snow Villiers from FF13.
Eizen is also on Tales of Arise
"sunshine-filled stories" where a mind controlled girl was feeding and caring for the corpses of her parents. Loool
Honest review though. Props
Which one are you talking about?
@@aya1566 tales of Symphonia, I guess it's kind of a spoiler but as soon as you meet the character you get the creepy vibe from her
Got it for PC and plays it with my X360 wireless gamepad. glad to see BANDAI NAMCO not limiting themselves.
they need to continue the anime of this game..It was so good.
Great review and I love her vocals here. She should do more reviews. Anyways, i'm interested in watching the storyline so time to hit up someone who's playing this and uploading it on RUclips!
"Berseria is the best game, and my favoruite to dates" Alright that's enough.. imma go buy it...
Berseria is the favorite Vesperia fans won't admit they love.
I'm seriously getting this...Can't wait!!!!
Can someone explain me why Velvet is in Tales of Berseria and Tales of Zestiria?
Bring it on the Switch!
Sepharite well tales did appear on the images showing future switch titles so maybe the next one will be on switch.
Sepharite I mean why not
It could handle it chraphics wise
Prompto the Fabulousss it wont be able to handle the new mother title... maybe since tales of is finally leaving the ps3 and they using the new engine
Candy Cat The new Mother title? Lmao what are are you talking about
Prompto the Fabulousss main games in the series titles AKA mothership titles.
xcuse me but how can u forget zestiria's characters
This is actually my first "Tales of" game, I never play any of them before, and I really like this one.
The lore is new to me so I confused myself a lot throughout the story, but still enjoyable.
The characters are great too.
From the beginning to nearly the end of the game, I actually hate Velvet's personality, I do understand why she acted so emo, but still, sometimes, I'm kinda tired.
Two characters that I really like are Eizen, and Magilou. These are really stable characters, Rokuro's not so much, he's just plain cool and badass, but Eizen and Magilou are the best for me.
I agree. Velvet is a little petty. But she was locked in a dungeon for 3 years.
I mean her whole family was killed, she was trapped in a prison for 3 years forced to fight for her life AND the entire Abbey is after her.
@Evil Koala Lol, neither.
I said I understand her circumstances, I felt bad for her, but like I said, sometimes I'm just tired of her that's all, am I not allowed to feel tired of someone's personality just because they had a rough experience?
@@GTTB-227 dont know what you are talking about lol since velvet is better at middle to the end
I wish they would make it to an anime, I know she showed up for couple of episodes in the Tales anime but I need more Velvet story
0:59 I've been playing far too much Overwatch...
So what happened to pros and cons at the end of review next to the number score?
Why does she keep saying Tales games of the past have had "sunshine-filled stories?" I've only played Symphonia and Abyss fully, and I wouldn't say either of those were happy-go-lucky.
i think she played Tales of Grace which is more comedic. hell, the story is literally a comedy drama rpg
What's the music in the background?
i hope this will be the last time xillia graphics used and back to vesperia graphics
i miss team symphonia 😢
Also video has 8.8k likes to match the score :o
So im having problems getting Tales of Berseria. I had a preorder for it and when it came time for it to download, it didnt. I checked the psn page and its saying that the product cannot be purchased at this time. Help?
The writing on this review was very enjoyable...
Just finished playing Tales of Arise absolutely loved that game now im looking for more Tales games to play and this seems to be next on the list
I’d also recommend vesperia, since I’m currently playing through it and it’s been quite enjoyable.
The opening itself is amazing
Did I miss something or is there really no lock on button?
this is the best tales of all time followed by abys then vesperia
The Xilia Subseries, Vesperia, Abyss and Symphonia are all better. Seriously. I'd highly recommend any of those, particularly Symphonia, which was my introduction to the series.
I played them all, and Berseria is the best for me. Velvet is so unique, different from the previous MCs.
My thoughts exactly, if you include Symphonia in there somewhere too. I haven't played the Xilia games
All the main characters are different and unique. None of them seem similar at all. Lloyd, Yuri, Ludger, Emil, Milla, Luke, Cress and Stahn.
You dumb fuckin peckerwood
you pin pricked cork board
Watch tales of zestiria the x
It's on sale for $15 too PSN
Sorry but this game will always be a 10 out of 10 in my eyes
Damn. I thought it would be better than a 10, guess I won't buy it. Thanks
u know when you press all the buttons on the phone and it says the number is not yet in service. the reviewer kinda sound similar
So...it's the Suikoden II of the Tales series?
Of course Berseria is great, with an opening performed by FLOW, it cant go wrong!!
Q
Shoutout to IGN for non skippable ads
first minute in "Sold!" (and I was already leaning toward buying it)
its hard to believe that this review was positive as japans reception was just an average game
no. japan's receptions are pretty good
It is evident with rather declining sales with the series as a whole
Toby Peralta It was only because of Zesty. Overall, Japan do love Berseria. The reception over there was very positive.
8.8 is somewhat generous for what's a fairly by-the-numbers Tales game, but it's certainly an improvement over Zestiria (which I couldn't even bother finishing).
Who is Zesty?
Getting towards the end of the game, its been quite a ride, I'm wondering if there's a ng+? Still tons of red code demon's to kill.
Buying this and kingdom heart on the same day 🤑
Do I have to play any of the previous tales game to fully enjoy this one?
When is this coming to switch though
Why Number Two is called laughcet?
I was at first like, oh my goodness we have an actual review by someone who actually know the series. And it is Tales, yes, good job IGN. But then "I can barely recall the names of past tales heroes"...I'm sorry what?! I understand that they totally changed the tone of the characters versus others and you want to show that the characters are truly different from the past games, that doesn't mean the others have really bad generic forgettable characters. What about Luke, hard to forget that annoyance, or the great country bumpkin Stahn. While I do like the review, I just can't agree with that statement.
Sharing feature is blocked or not?
Astearica some cutscenes are I believe
The best JRPG of 2017 is already out huh?
Neat.
Nah. That will be Ni No Kuni, Persona 5 and Dragon Quest XI.
Dragon Quest XI could be. Ni No Kuni, well I didn't like the first one but I hope the second one may surprise me. Persona 5, naaaaah. Never.
Bokxie persona 5 never?........ I feel like thats bait
Bokxie smh
Bokxie ff7 remake
Tales of Data (my idea for a tales of game)
genre: SciFi Fantasy
combat mechanics: Similar to naruto shippuden ultimate ninja storm 2. however instead of 1 on 1 battles, your party will be involved in fights with both bosses and monsters.
main protagonist's abilities: Since main protagonist is also sharing his/her body with an AI, his/her abilities will be similar to the abilities of Shadow of mordor.
anything else you guys think should be added, reply ^^
