    I am enjoying the fact that combat starts quite sluggish and stiff, but as you get more skills / gear, it literally makes the combat itself PLAY better as you add new mechanics. Almost like your leveling up the game itself with a better battle system the further you go.

      I feel like that’s a weird way to put what is a common and typical concept in gaming. If something isn’t at least slightly off putting then there is no advantage to “powering up”. The original Final Fantasy established this, among many other games, by having you deal with annoying random encounters until you got the airship. It made what is realistically just a minor change in character icon feel like you were suddenly ultra-powerful and soaring above the troubles down below.
      It’s just an example of why trying to please whiny gamers by getting rid of every discomfort hurts game design.

      It’s not that you aren’t liking JRPGs anymore, it’s that JRPGs aren’t JRPGs anymore and haven’t been for a long time. Like any endeavor, games are constantly tasked with attaining “growth” for the company that creates them. This means that every title needs to sell more than the last. So, just like pop music, developers try to maximize wide appeal by incorporating trends while minimizing or eliminating pain-points.
      People don’t like losing or replaying challenging fights? Gone. People like button mashing action instead of strategy? Gone.
      Squaresoft flatnout said that FFXIII was meant to be compared to Call Of Duty more than it was other RPGs. And now that making those kinds of games has gotten too expensive, they admit to forgetting how to make games like their classics.
      So it’s not just you. It’s all true RPG fans. While the action based, graphics heavy, no-challenge, movie heavy “RPG” games have an audience, what they like about “RPGs” is entirely different than what fans of the original version of the genre liked. And those new fans don’t like those original games.
      So it’s basically two entirely different canvases being forced to share the same genre title despite wanting two entirely separate things.

      Basically every Tales game have a slow start with their battle system and stories as the game slowly teaches you how it works mechanically and storywise..
      But after a while it gets incredibly fun and quite deep in the combat department.
      And thats not even mentioning the incredible story and character arcs.
      So yeah.. I HIGHLY recommend you give this classic another try.

    I feel like Tales lost part of its identity when it changed the combat system to full 3D. Games like Vesperia just feel so good to play. I love Berseria's combat as well, but I still prefer the mix of 2d and 3d combat from the old games. The old combat some weight to it. I just beat this for the first time a few days ago. Bought the Definitive Edition on PS4. Ive wanted it for a decade, as I had a PS3 last generation and watched the reviews and trailers wishing I could have played it on XBox. It’s the only Tales game I’ve ever played and I was completely blown away. The storyline was standard fare for a JRPG but the cast of characters was easily the best I’ve seen since Final Fantasy X. Buy and play tales of the abyss. If you have to use an emulator do that. Or buy it on 3ds. Just somehow play that game. Trust me you will love it. And yes you will hate the main character. Don't worry you are supposed to hate him. The game tries to make you hate him and they succeed. But trust me You will be glad you gave your time to that gem of a game. Abyss and Vesperia are two of the best games in the franchise with the 3rd being symphonia (although it now suffers from its time but sets up a lot of what abyss and vesperia uses). @Fabian Fischer I like Yuri as a character but as a protagonist he is very boring. There is no growth for him. He is very much the same person at the end of the game as he was at the beginning of the game. So I disagree. Luke is a better protagonist. He learns, he grows, he changes for the better. But he is still ultimately flawed and still relies on the help of his team. He's much more interesting of a character. Yuri is better served as a party member you pick up. In fact he is very much like Alvin from xillia. Or all the other slightly older party members from past tales. And frankly I just find him boring as a protagonist.

    One thing I’ve noticed with the Tales games right from the start is that the English voice dubs are some of the best English voice acting for JRPGs. It’s right up there with the English dubs of any Studio Gibli movies.

Hardly anything of the actual pot got spoiled and you didn't even get an explanation about the themes and overall plot. Review is totally fine. • @disclaimin
      @disclaimin 5 лет назад +22

      @Patricia Luna That's nonsense. The review spoils the ending of the first act, and should seriously be rectified. The character shown is introduced early and serves as a villain for the remainder of the act, so anyone in that wide timespan will be spoiled on the plotline's conclusion - a conclusion that, as per the video's point, is not typical of a JRPG lead.

    • @RebirthCrusader90
      @RebirthCrusader90 5 лет назад +14

      Patricia Luna I don’t see how you wouldn’t consider showing several lines of dialogue of a scene in which the protagonist of the game menacingly approaches a villain as he begs for mercy NOT a spoiler, lol. It lays out what’s going to happen very clearly to one of the villains of the game rather than several other possibilities. Also, it’s not like the game is advertised as a vigilante Punisher JRPG, nothing about Yuri’s introduction indicates him as anything but rebellious. People don’t look at the cover art with Yuri and say, “Oh, he’s obviously a vigilante.”

I really like all the characters (especially their banter in the skits) and appreciate them giving us the dual audio option (JP VA ftw! :D). Runs flawlessly at 1080p 60fps on my medium range PC.
    All in all I'm looking forward to see this through to the end and I hope Bandai go back and port the other ones as well to consoles and PC. (Xillia 2 I heard is a good one and Abyss).

      Berseria is worse than Vesperia in pretty much every single aspect. Graphics, story, characters, music, combat(they took away the Artes and of course the world structure which makes exploration too boring and keeps giving you the same exact side quests over and over.

      @@FuzzyDlop Funny thing about opinions is that they're subjective. Darkholow never said Berseria is straight up better. • @salazin466
      @salazin466 5 лет назад +4

      @@FuzzyDlop Playing both, I think Vesperia edges out Berseria in gameplay, but honestly I enjoyed Berseria a lot. Characters wise Yuri is a bit better than Velvet as well, but he's not as entertaining. In about every other aspect I prefer Berseria though (minus the dungeon...). Vesperia doesn't have any other good characters (some alright ones in Flynn and Judith) and the story feels like you're just bouncing around one random plot to another, and doesn't have the coherence you see in Berseria, with the theme and general focus of the plot staying relatively faithful throughout the game. The gameplay in Vesperia is better overall once it opens up, but my god are there inherent issues with the game, especially at the start of the game (And this is coming from someone who played the PS3 ver.), e.g. fighting multiple enemies is absolutely stupid in this game until you get decent artes and skills. Having to run away and spam Azure Edge to survive in every 1vX to play hard mode is absolutely bad game design. To be fair, gets hella fun later though.
      Also, the characters excuses to stay together, especially in the early parts of the story just come off as weak. There's so many points when the characters seem to stick together "just cuz, why not?" instead of a legitimate reason.
      Vesperia is a great game, but the praise it gets is overrated, imo, all the Tales games are about the same level of awesome. There are good things and bad things in each of them, and for the most part, it equals out to all of them being about the same to me in enjoyment.

    Holy.... I'm not going to nitpick how many bosses and costumes were shown in the footage, but spoiling that rather large defining moment for a particular character is a pretty awful thing to include in a review.
    You're already aware it's been a decade since it was first out, it'll be a LOT of people's first times playing it.
    Still love that this was brought back though, by far one of the best tales games I've ever played and by far the best protagonist. But come on guys, careful with those spoilers especially in a 40+ hour JRPG.

  • @RagingDrew
    @RagingDrew 3 года назад +1

    Didn't play this back in the day despite loving Symphonia at release. I can't believe I passed this up, and this is coming from someone who started to tire of JRPGs and their somewhat monotonous nature the past decade or two. I haven't been anything else since starting, but it exceeded my expectations. Great characters, music, English voicework, fun enough combat, and the look aged very well. This review helped me get intrigued, so, thank you for that!

I picked that up because of the recommendations and reviews and how it supposedly was a break in a new direction, but I personally wasn't invested in it and found the gameplay loop to be repetitive and uninteresting. Easy allies frequently falls into making issues out of nit picky bullshit. The enemies should be visible on the screen all the time instead of appearing? That’s not a hardware limitation it’s a game design choice. Random and semi-random encounters create an entire element of gameplay that forces the player to think ahead and be prepared. It affects how the player shops at stores and how they equip their characters. Just saying it should be gone because some gamers find strategy annoying is like saying all fighting games should feature auto blocking because it’s “annoying” to have to manually block all the time.

      2 months late reply, but I'll give you some tidbits.
      There's no.. straight up godawful game I'd say, but some can feel more average than others.
      I would say just pick and choose whatever looks the most interesting. However! I'd say if you're going to pick your first Tales game, don't go for the super early PS1 games, Legendia or Zestiria. Not that they're bad, but they're different. But if you truly want to start them, go for it.
      My choice, aswell 90% of Tales fans, suggests one of the big three: Symphonia, Abyss or Vesperia.
      Symphonia being on GameCube, PS3 and PC for availability. The game is from 2003, so the gameplay isn't AS refined as newer titles, but the OST, cast and story is top notch.
      Abyss is on PS2 and 3DS, so it's not as easy to access, however, the story is another fantastic one, and the gameplay is Symphonia but refined.
      Vesperia, with the 2019 Definitive Edition, is on a buncha platforms. PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PS4. The gameplay is again, like Abyss and Symphonia, but refined.
      The story is good, the cast is fantastic aswell and the OST is nice.

    I'm playing this for the first time now. (First Tales game I've ever played). The combat is ok. Not amazing but not dull by any means. The camera however is garbage. I really, really, really hate that I can't control it freely. The positives though are that the skits are so damn good, the characters are so interesting (and I'm not very far into this yet), the music is fantastic (especially the opening. I've been singing that to myself at work constantly) and what I've seen so far from the story itself has been pretty gripping. I'm looking forward to meeting the rest of the cast.

      It's way too late for this to happen since the game has been around for a long time now and no video game animes get this treatment but I would love to see a 100+ episode anime featuring these characters. And I base my want for that entirely on the opening. I can't express enough how much I love that opening. It's my favourite opening to any game, movie or tv show I've ever seen. The music, the characters and the fight scenes shown all work so well together. When that old guy you meet in the jail cell early on in the game spins around and aims his bow and arrow I legitimately get goosebumps every time.
