    Yorgos Lanthimos is a master at creating deadpan drama comedy films His work on Dogtooth is what gave him the spotlight in his directing career.
    Eventually leading him to the US and fine tuning his work with The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and the Academy Award Winning The Favourite. He has recently been working with Emma Stone a ton and I am really excited for the future.
    Poor Things is a Frankensteinien comedy that will add to his filmographie’s Oscar total. Hopefully with Emma Stone netting Best Actress.

      Thats the hard part! Finding someone that nails his style as well. I make a slight joke to Riley Stearns in the video but i believe he is the closest do doing Yorgos. Movies like Dual and Art of Self Defense are solid

    Strange that you didn't find much value in Alps, especially when you go straight into The Favourite, and mention the narrative being based around 'real' and 'fake' love. I think it's a film that's easily forgotten about by people, but works really well within his filmography.
    Lanthymos is one of my favourite directors working today, you do a good job at assessing his work and addressing what you like about it.
    Poor Things is such a vast and intricate film with so many subtextual themes interweaving.
    My favourite, I think, is The Killing Of A Sacred Deer. It took me several watches, after the obvious ties to Funny Games disappeared, the creeping home invasion becomes more layered as it progresses. A near retelling of Pasolini's Theorem. It's fitting Barry ended up playing a similar role in Saltburn.

    As a Greek, I say that Yorgos in Dogtooth wanted to depict through a more extravagance way how strict and conservative specific greek families can get. Wich of course can be considered a fascist act.

    • @NeekoWatchesMovies
      @NeekoWatchesMovies  29 дней назад +1

      Thanks for that perspective. I always find it hard to gather all of that subtext when watching foreign films

    • @Libvoj
      @Libvoj 29 дней назад

      @@NeekoWatchesMovies Well, I'm not saying you are wrong about the film depicting fascism, I actually agree. Yorgos wants to say a lot of things in the movie by making the audience find they're own explanation on what actually happend. For example, I never thought that the brother that managed to escape might actually never existed, I thought that it was just a child that managed somehow to escape the "cave". Even if the brother actually managed to escaped or not it doesn't matter, the so-called brother is still a way for the father to spread propaganda, nothing changes. Or, if the daughter in the end actually escaped, or died from bleeding in the trunk etc. It doesn't mater because in one way or another the daughter escaped this prison, the act of the daughter doesn't change.

    Neeko, Yorgos is great, when you get a chance, I would like your thoughts on Panos Cosmatos, also Brandon Cronenberg (Possesser)*. Note did you notice Yorgos used the exact same music from Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’, in “ The Killing of a Sacred Deer.”

      Wow, what an experience, you’re right there with Cronenberg lineage. I know all of David Cronenberg’s work and Brandon following (AntiViral). Also, first time I saw Christopher Abbott in a film (Possessor). Loved Infinity Pool. I had a thought A24 and Ti West are focusing on Mia Goth and she is going to hit Major Star level when they-release Maxxxine.

      @@NeekoWatchesMovies well his name in greek is Γιώργος λανθημος (George lanthimos) i imagine in English they call him yorgos instead of gorgos is because in Greek ( in the case of George ) g sound like y like yiorgos or yiordanis the y sound like y or gio (in this case) so yeah you pronounced his name actually well not like most English people I feel most because even if we have some similarities like 5% I think of English word have greek origin (like geometry and philosophy we call them almost the same in both languages) but the greek language has a really different alphabet and overall pronunciation and to be fair the Greek language is really complicated and hard so yeah good job mate

    Lanthimos was also an actor in a Greek movie called Attenberg. Its better film than Alps and less good than Dogtooth. Search it and watch it when you have time. Though he has some sex scenes with his future wife Arianne Labed there and he's fully naked.

    such a good video! i'm actually not a fan of lanthimos - i've seen 3 of his films and i honestly just never like the experience of watching them. i appreciate his filmmaking and i understand what he tries to do, but the way the characters speak irks me and the endings never satisfy me. i think his style is just not for me.. however, i found your analyses to be very interesting and i definitely learnt a couple of things i didn't know before about the backgrounds of the films! also, i haven't watched "the favorite" and seeing the cinematography and you mentioning that the characters don't speak in the usual monotonous tone makes me think i might actually enjoy this one, so i won't be completely writing him off yet!
