[7k][4k] Rails Across Hills, Trains on the CSX Abbeville Subdivision, GA 09/19-10/03/2020

- The CSX Abbeville Subdivision is located in Northeast Georgia, south of the Appalachians. Whereas the actual mountains are well to the north, this rail line passes through quite hilly terrain between Atlanta, GA and Abbeville, SC and neither the builders, nor the several successors that carried "Seaboard" in their name (which includes CSX) considered a more gentle alignment of tracks. So saving money by avoiding expensive cuts, the rails were laid across the hills in flat segments that resemble terraces or steps of a ladder. In-between these half-mile long steps are grades of up to 1%. I have also called it a roller coaster in earlier videos. No doubt, this makes for interesting train-viewing and spectacular long shots (like in this video), but in past times it caused many problems for trains. Sure enough, the railroad pioneers did not even dream of PSR-style super long trains. In this video, we watch manifest Q580 (looking like a disguised Q210, because he only had autoracks) and two variants of Q582, as well as G139. The latter is a grain train that terminates at the feed mill in Comer, GA located on this line. Watching him shoving his hoppers into the industry spur, while Q580 passes on the side track, climbing one of those infamous grades, is a sight you don't want to miss. Enjoy!
Great catches in some hilly areas. Where I am its all flat being on the old New York Central Water Level Route
Thanks! Well, railfanning the Water Level Route must be also very cool!
@@mbmars01 It is, the CSX and NS mainlines here are 1/4 to 1/2 mile from Lake Erie
I expect it must be very busy up there. Can you send some of your trains down south ;)
Still enjoying your videos. Hope you and yours are managing to stay safe. All the best Mick🇬🇧
That's great that you keep enjoying them! As of now, my place is a safe haven, but who knows what's still in the bag for us. Stay safe, too!
Beautiful shots .I just love to watch ur video's thks
I know, these shots are amazing. This is simply a cool location. It's actually one of my favorite spots on this line.
I like that bump at the crossing at 18:25. That train was movin! Didn't have long to wait for a video this time.
Since this is a long shot, I didn't see the train bumping when I filmed it, but when working on the video I saw it, too. Sometimes, I'm glad I don't see the sideways movements when I'm on location, because they would scare me lol.
Very nice compilation of catches! The hills make for the perfect scene of grunt & power!
Thanks! Absolutely. Even though CSX trains tend to look very similar nowadays, different spots offer great perspectives, though. And the setting sun shining onto the nose of a GEVO - well I like that!
8:55 - Looks like a wild roller coaster ride for train crews passing through that location.
It looks a bit more dramatic in the zoom shots, but the grades are there and more than once heavy trains have struggled getting over these hills.
@@mbmars01 I wonder how many knuckle breaks they go through in those areas.
It happened all the time in the past... Now it's not so bad anymore, but there also fewer trains running.
Always love to see your video.
Very cool!
Great action shots. You really show the hilly terrain. Excellent video as usual.
Oh yeah. The last train almost stalled at the steepest hill in the area, Bogart Hill, where I saw him crawl at about 5 mph - very much to the fun of the people waiting at the rail crossing lol. Great you like the video!
Nice pics! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, David! You're welcome!
You weren't alone, when the first two trains went past you. There's a couple on the other side of the track. It's good to see others like the SE Hull location too. I love the nifty ET44 and the midtrain helpers. These are cool long trains and you captured them very nicely. Another quality update, thank you for your effort. :)
Right, there were some kids and a police cop, but nobody bothered me. It's true, I also really like these shots. It's difficult to get them in decent quality, so when I'm filming I never really know what it looks like on a big screem. Only at the production stage, the quality reveals itself.
Great catches..up one hill down the other! The mixed freight was really "hauling the mail"!!
Thanks, Mike. That's right, always up and down along the entire line. I think he had to make up time. He almost stalled earlier. Those CSX people who make the assessment how much power is needed do not always seem to be ahead of the curve when it comes to adding topographic specifics to the equation.
Super as usual, hope you and family are doing well
Thanks so much! Yes, I'm fine; I hope you can say the same about you and your family! Stay safe.
I see the crew of 704 is enjoying the air conditioning (the door being open) - though I would think it has A/C in the cab. Just great things here - the meet, the chatter, the trains :)
Yes CSX units have A/C, unless it malfunctioned. When I watc hed the "final product" by myself I also thought there's really a lot in it. I still can't get over that long shot close to the end. I haven't filmed on this side of Harper Siding in a while. I just love it :)
@@mbmars01 yes! Long shots are awesome. Grain train, tankers, coal - any where the cars are similar for me 😊
@Jim Dean thoughts exactally... engines arent bathroom friendly
@Jim Dean LOL :)
love this video
Thanks!
great video 🚄🚄👍
Cool, thank you!
Excellent production (of course). What a lovely shot that is at 12:10. I really do think some of the greatest unsung heroes are the conductors who hang on to the end of the train while they shove backwards, sometimes for miles.
Thanks so much! Really appreciate it. I know, it sometimes scares me to see them hanging there and their only contact is the engineer via radio, sometimes a mile away.
Locomotive reliability must be getting better these days. It seems more and more common to see single units leading trains.
Well, they are, but they are also operated at their limits. The last train almost stalled out on one of those hills.
@@mbmars01 How embarrasing would that be?? I sure wish I lived near some Class 1 railroading, especially now that I"m retired.
Nice catches
Thank you!
@@mbmars01 your welcome
Keep 'em coming!
Yup, will try.
Terrific catches/meets!
Thanks!
@@mbmars01 Your Welcome!
Amazing video! Thumb up!
Thanks very much!
Another great video.
Cool, thanks!
Hot diggity! What a ride! Always great to watch your videos. To me they're very soothing, listening to steel on steel. Those were some good long shots, especially at the feed mill. You never disappoint. No click bait here!
That's nice! There's more in queue that I'm sure you'll like!
@@mbmars01 There's no doubt about that!
The G trains come from Indiana btw!
Loved the video!
