  • We follow the grain train from Hull to Comer in Northeast Georgia to its final destination: The Chicken Feed Mill located at Howie Siding. The entire switching of grain cars at the feed mill that is completely documented here lasted for about 2.5 hours. An exciting event was the bypass on the side track of the inevitable intermodal Q194 which showed up very early. At that time, the main track of Howie Siding was still occupied by grain cars. +Gene Bivings Thank you very much. So cool to get such a nice feedback! I'm in Auburn and Winder occasionally, in Buford rarely. All are nice locations, but quite a bit away from where I live. However, there are several videos on my channel with footage from these towns.

      Yes,I saw that. There are still many that you up-loaded I havn't seen yet but Have watched more than not watched. Rest assured,I'll eventually see them all. I have about a dozen or so of my own that I have posted. Still a novice but now that I'm retired,I spend a lot of time waiting on trains and love it. Keep yours coming as well and feel free to check out a few of mine,I only have 13 subscibers but I don't video trains for any reason other than the thrill and joy of doing so. I'm very familiar with that territory between Athens and Elberton. I used to travel SC/GA 72 from my home in SC to UGA back in the 1980's specifically to see the trains. I was never disappointed, especially in the evening.
    That is some massive switching operation there.

      +moonspots01 Cool! I'm rather new to the area and still enjoy discovering it. When the trains are running it's simply awesome, in particular, because of the parallel highway 72. This makes chasing a lot easier. I'm glad to have an active track nearby, although sometimes there are truly dull times with no train running for hours.

    The close-up of the wheels to the track was Great,I could even see daylight between the wheels and track confirming what I had always heard that only a surface not wider than a dime is all that the wheel actually touches on the track,making resistance extremely non existent .

    There should be the third track on the mill side so it's will make it easier for the traffic to get through. Probably about all the length of the train that we have seen on the video.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  2 года назад +1

      The problem is that the feed mill is on the "wrong" side, i.e., all switching is done on the main track and other trains have to pass on the slower side track. However, there aren't really many trains, so this is not a big issue.

    at 19;54 the train is brok in 2 places and another train has come up on same track and is switching over by majic to track #2 what happened to the cars from track#1 first train? something is screwy down over that hill.

      For those not seeing the breaks, it's a 42 minute video shot over the course of 2 and a half hours. There's been an hour fifty minutes cut out. Which is why you don't always see the switching of the tracks taking place. If you want to see the layout check out Google Maps. The feed mill is Columbia Farms just to the west of Comer.

    we used to have a road train i would go see in Thomasville yard in Thomasville, GA.
    used to have wide bodies on the point. made up in Thomasville as Q545 and return as Q546.
    so much for the Thomasville and dothan subs. all those trains were put on the Fitz, the 545/546 was deleted by csx.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 лет назад +1

      That's a pity. I cannot blame CSX for trying to operate economically, but sometimes one doesn't understand the purpose of a change. We also "lost" a train here, Q662, which seemed to make perfect sense. Now it was merged with Q616, which is run overlong. This almost routinely leads to problems, Q616 has established the reputation of an unreliable train.

    Perhaps you could answer a question for me,you refered to the train that was passing on the siding as Q-194 how do you/they come up with the "Q" number ? Its not the train number. I was curious as to how this was done. I'm always hearing railfans refering to "Q"I know its a manifest and has to be someplace by a certain time or the Rail Road co. gets penalized. Any help on this would really be appreciated. Thanks!

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 лет назад +2

      +High Rail-62 All trains have symbols that make them unique on the network. Many of those are scheduled trains that means they re-occur on a certain schedule, often daily. CSX, like all other railroads, has an own system of symbols. Q194 is a daily intermodal train between Atlanta and Charlotte. Q trains can be manifests, autoracks, or intermodals. Coal trains are designated N or T for loaded, and E or U for empties. Ethanol and rock is K, work trains W, grain V and G, etc. Extra trains can have S, R, and X symbols.

    • @HighRail62
      @HighRail62 7 лет назад

      Thank you for the explanation. I was also able to find on google the symbols,example for empty grain is a V. I enjoy filming the trains and now I'm to the point where I'm seeing and hearing guys like you talk about this or that and was curious. Thanks for taking the time to explain,it really shows you care and have class. Enjoy the day and I'll be watching. :)

    looks like they would have cut the hill down unless the rails was laid down years ago when they didn't have the equipment to cut it down? From the heat coming up off the ground it must have a little warm that day. Wished you could have showed the unloading the cars. Very good video. Thanks

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 лет назад

      +John Moore Well, I don't know it, but I think the original railroad lines here were among the first ever laid down. So, maybe they simply didn't have the equipment. Unloading the cars is rather unspectacular, because it is done in this covered sort of shed. The only thing one can see is dust from the fine grains is coming up. Thanks, I'm glad you liked the video!

    I'm always amazed at how trains can climb that grade in all of your videos. How long does it take to unload the train and send it back for another load? Do the CSX locos get involved in the spotting at the silos or is there an in-plant switcher? Hope that cop didn't give you a hard time.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 лет назад +3

      +JAMES MARK Yes, it is amazing and sometimes doesn't work as expected. Occasionally, trains split and block the line (and road crossings in Comer). There is a small railcar mover at the silo. The locos only switch the storage tracks. I never give a cop a reason to be angry at me, of course ;)

    Why do they tie down there and not return with an empty train or loaded train what ever the case may be? Retired trainman, I can't figure out the move.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 лет назад +1

      The same engines were used the next day to switch the cars inside the feed mill, i.e., they moved the cars through the unloader. After this was done, they assembled a train of empty cars on the main track of the siding and indeed returned with the empty cars to where they came from. Since this can basically be done within one day, there is no need to move the engines somewhere else. Even more so as there is no depot nearby anyway. The feed mill owns a small railcar mover but it is too tiny to be used to unload an entire train of grain cars.

    • @brainerdrebel
      @brainerdrebel 8 лет назад

      I am surprised that CSX doesn't keep a switch crew there, and just pick up and set off that is the way we did in the old days. We had out lying jobs, you would go to work there. Just Curious!

    What would it take to realign the formation so that Main is next to Highway 72 and Siding is by the mill? There must surely be a speed penalty or differential associated with the turnouts. Excellent edit BTW.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  6 лет назад +2

      Mill and main line are not so busy that a realignment would pay off. I guess there's one train coming in and next day going out at the mill every week and when it does, maybe 3 or 4 main line trains are affected by the decomposition/composition of the train. During the unloading process, the main line is open.

      Jermaine Douglas Well, it's a rather time-consuming task, but, maybe, at some time in the future. I would certainly have fun producing another video of this sort.

      @@mbmars01 Indeed, probably my favorite train to catch as I've only caught 2 in all the time I've been railfanning. I recently discovered that a couple of those run on my New Castle Subdivision in Ohio, and one of them (G772) goes to a really interesting short line RR in Green Spring, WV. This short line RR is called the South Branch Valley RR (SBVR), which has two vintage locomotives in Chessie and B&O paint they use to help pull freight cars and grain trains CSX brings in to them. The grain trains CSX brings in to them are always on weekends, and the grain operations after CSX brings it in take place in the week. CSX brings the grain to the interchange (usually about 100 cars), and the SBVR takes it down in 2 cuts to the chicken feed mill in Moorefield. They take the first cut down on Monday, the second on Tuesday, and bring the empties back up to the CSX interchange on Wednesday.

      These processes simply take a surprisingly long time, but it's not easy to come up with ideas as to how to make it more efficient.

    i said what i said. and meant it. I DID NOT SAY THUMBS DOWN TO THE VIDEO. so why u attack me ???? i m bham alabama so i can drive over there and watch it myself if it ment so much to me. i think the video has parts missing. a guy appears from nowhere? to break the train? nope. but near the camera he appears to pull the switch.. something is not consistent is all i m saying.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 лет назад +1

      Don't worry, no one attacks you. I just didn't put everything into the video. That's maybe, why it looks as if the train was broken. The entire switching procedure took far more than 2 hours and I found this too long for the video. The have to uncouple about half the train or even less and shove the first part onto the storage tracks inside the storage yard, which also consumes quite a bit of time. Then they come out on the main again, pick up the next cars and repeat this until all cars are distributed on the storage tracks.

    watched this over and over and still dont see how it broke in the middle.

  • @skipperskipper2209

    down over the hill , the train breaks apart. wow, how did that happen since the train did not slow down so a guy could jump off. that only happened only at the switch, not down the hill.
