    I'm single and opted for the glass carafe version. I brew 3/4 of a Liter every morning. Rather than keep the remaining coffee on the hotplate I use and old Stanley thermos I've preheated with boiling water. Keeps the coffee hot for hours. Pouring and cleanup using the thermos is much easier. :)

    This video was quite helpful! "Unless you're the utmost particular with your coffee. In that case, you're probably never going to be happy." Love it! I was debating the glass/thermal issue. Because of your thoughts here, I'll go with the glass when I buy. Thank you for your common sense and candor!

    I have the same Moccamaster with the thermal carafe. It’s even the same stone gray color, but a little newer. They have redesigned the thermal carafe to a glass lined version with a better pour spout. No metallic taste, and pours nice.

      What’s your experience with the glass lined carafe keeping the coffee hot? I have the old version which, in my opinion, does a terrible job - even when preheated. Trying to decide if I should just get a glass carafe version instead or give the new thermal carafe a shot. Thanks!

    • @nelsonjohnsrud5940
      @nelsonjohnsrud5940 8 месяцев назад

      @@PrincessThomas. I think it does very well. I’m not in the habit of preheating it, and it seems to be fine without it. I am normally up long before my wife. I’ll usually make the coffee between 6:00 and 7:00 and have my first cup, leaving the rest of the pot for when my wife gets up at 8:00. After pouring hers around 8:15 I’ll have another cup. The difference is hardly noticeable. The pot is empty by 9:00 or so, and still plenty hot, although the difference is enough to be noticeable by this time. If the pot stays full it should hold temperature longer.

      I have this version too, perfect size for making two or four 8oz cups. Best feature of the carafe? Portability - screw in the lid and it will not break nor spill if dropped.

    The thermal plate will not burn the coffee. It cycles to keep this from happening. You also have two temperature settings for it (I have that same yellow glass carafe model and have been using it for three years 🙂).

    The thermal carafe is glass lined to prevent odd tastes. From the Moccamaster site: The borosilicate glass lining of our stainless steel carafe retains heat and keeps your coffee hotter longer..

      I believe the glass lining is something fairly new within the last few years with the Moccamaster carafe. I remember a few years back people were complaining in forums everywhere of the metallic taste in their coffee with the carafes. That's why I went with glass. Honestly, it's too bad they don't offer a carafe upgrade from the glass one.

    I own both now. Had the carafe one for over a decade and just purchased the hotplate version (more suited to my one cup a day needs). Both solid products. The only small issue with the carafe one is that side button sticks a little. I could probably fix it myself if I put in the effort.

    • @hxhdfjifzirstc894
      @hxhdfjifzirstc894 8 месяцев назад +1

      Why not just put your coffee cup under the machine you already had, and skip using the carafe? I guess you could put tape over the button (or there's a video on YT that shows how to make a wood block that pushed the button automatically, so you can use a travel mug instead of a carafe).

    I have the glass carafe as usually at home and drink the 1L of coffee brewed within an hour or so. I bought a Thermos 1.2L for the days when I'm in the office which fits in my laptop bag which the Technivorm thermal carafe wouldn't, and that will keep it warm all day, it's like having the best of both worlds. Here in Europe due to EU laws the hotplate doesn't run as long, I think it turns off after around 45 mins or so from starting the brewing cycle (at least on the newer models). I did try the Sage / Breville machine with the thermal carafe but overall just prefer the Technivorm - you can't beat the bubbles!

    You can also just throw in one dishwasher detergent pod, fill it with hot water, and leave it to sit overnight, then rinse thoroughly in the morning. I bought the KBGV Select with the glass carafe, but I almost always pour that into an Alfi Hotello 1 liter carafe and then turn off the machine to save electricity and not be "cooking" the coffee on the hot plate. Also, I don't care what thermal carafe it's in, the coffee flavor still changes over time, and I find about 2 hours is how much time I get before that happens. The beauty of the Alfi Hotello design is it's stainless steel without any gaskets and without a glass chamber inside to (easily and eventually) break. It was designed for waiters, so when you pour the hinged lid opens on its own and then closes on its own right after, just via gravity. The lid is about 1" thick and hollow so I assume that heats up inside and keeps the coffee warm. At any rate, it works beautifully, and I tend to always make coffee in a machine then serve it from a carafe anyway so it's no bother for me (especially since the Hotello can be washed in the dishwasher. I liked it so much I bought the smaller .6 liter version to use for making pour over coffee. I use it instead of a glass carafe and so the coffee I took the time to make is just as hot and just as good when I'm pouring from the last cup. (The only disadvantage of this is you can't visually fill to a point on the glass so you have to use a scale, but I was doing that with pour over anyway.)
    I looked at the thermal carafe versions but wanted the Select version and in the wider array of colors available. That's just me.

    Can I kindly "pick your brains" out here in coffeeland and ask if you have any solution to my Moccamaster with steel carafe problem? While brewing with obviously the carafe firmly in place I find nearly on each brew the coffee leaks from beneath and runs along the main coffee machine all onto the kitchen work surface. I've tried giving the whole brew basket a good wash and moving the non-drip switch but it still drips quite steadily . Thanks GS France

  • @emmanuelmota1

    The width of the units are significantly different. If you have a small space to place your coffee machine the carafe is the obvious choice.

      On the thermal carafe version the destratification tube is for brewing only, and is removable. It helps mix the coffee as it brews to even out the flavor differences between start and end of brew cycle. There is a standard cap that replaces it after brewing. Pull out the tube and cap it.
