I have this car with 105k miles on it never had any problems with it at all. I drive wirh a heavy foot and i get 33 miles to a gallon and with long road trips im getting 40 miles to a gallon. Will drive it until it dies.
Just recently purchased a used ‘18 GT Base (with the automatic and no options). Even though it is a little weaker than the GT Sport/N-Line, I’m still enjoying it quite a lot! In my first week of driving it, I’ve been averaging 28.4 MPG in mixed city and highway driving (in the St. Louis area in both Missouri and Illinois), so I’ve managed to beat the EPA averages (a little trick to that is on the highway I use the manual mode to keep it in sixth gear even when going up hills...it helps a lot because I’ve noticed the transmission doesn’t like hill climbing all that much). Handling and ride are no issues for me, despite the torsion beam in the rear. I can still corner no problem. Great car, and I’m glad I bought it!
The Civic has really made everyone have to step there game up. I hate the civics styling but love what they did for the segment. A bit of me does wonder if the Civic would do even better with Elantra like styling. I know it would be in my garage
I'm with you on the styling of the Civic. There angles of the Civic hatch exterior which really work, but there are others which just stink. Color makes a big difference, for reason, as well, in how the design works. The Civic hatch sport has two other knocks: the cloth seats are modest in their support and the base radio head unit is as bare bones as it gets. I'd also like to bring up a more subjective matter: the Civic's uniquely styled gauge cluster. While the Elantra GT creates a highly legible user interface, Honda continues with their non-standard speedometer readouts and presentation. Why? I don't know. On the plus side, the Civic hatch's cargo capacity is decent, acceleration is very acceptable and visibility is decent. That fuel economy doesn't hurt, either.
I hear that, Richard. I still daily a '01 Integra and relish the high-revving, naturally aspirated power plant. I feel like I need to get into a much higher price band to match the fit / feel of honda products from 15 - 20 years ago. But here we find ourselves in 2018 with price points for Civics and equivalent offerings from other makers reaching $30k.
I just traded in a 2013 Kia Soul for a 2018 Elantra GT. Handling is a BIG difference! Taking a curve into or onto a freeway was the biggest change AND gas mileage in the Hyundai Elantra is better than the Soul. Don't get me wrong, the Soul is a fun little car with a HUGE back seat and mine had hauled all sorts of things. The new techie items as well as the styling of the Elantra has me really liking it AND the Electric Blue color helps!
Alex, if you had to pick one which would you pick (considering Style, driving experience, future proofing for baby seats, Maybe Fuel Economy, etc) for 2018 in North America? 1. Civic hatch 2018 2. Civic sedan 2018 3. Mazda3 Hatch 2018 4. Elantra GT hatch 2018 5. Accord Sport 2018 6. Kia Forte5 7. Chevy Cruze 2018 8. Ford Focus (Titanium?)
I've had a Hyundai GT Sport with the DCT for almost a year now. Really happy with the car. Quite comfortable, and sporty when you want. You're right, the mileage could be better, but it's not terrible and the car looks better than the Honda and it was cheaper to purchase. I also looked at the VW GTi, but in my area it was 12000 more than my Hyundai. I run winter tires, so I will swap to a performance tire on my alloys when the factory tires need to be replaced. Also I've found there is aftermarket support emerging for this car which is nice. I would recommend the GT Sport if you're looking for a sporty hatchback that won't break the bank.
Nice review, Alex. But please, please, please consider show the cargo area of hatchbacks with both of the seats folded down and state volume with seats up and down. People buy hatchbacks for utility, but very few reviewers ever show us these things. I'd venture to guess that drivers will more frequently load the car with large items from Home Depo than stuffed full of carry on luggage.
are vee yes I stopped after reading your comment ....spends 5 min sitting on back seat but doesn’t climb in the back hatch and fold seats maybe he is heavy guy but that’s why I am buying hatchback darn it
Hyundai's biggest shortcoming is fuel economy. I have a Civic Touring sedan, and can get over 40mpg highway, quite easily. I like the way Hyundai equips their cars, especially for the cost, but I favor my Civic for getting to 60 under 7 seconds and still being able to get great fuel economy.
Fuel economy only matters if the prices of the cars are close or fuel prices are sky high. When the initial purchase price is a few thousand more, it'll take 10 years to recover the difference. Even at DOUBLE today's fuel cost it would take over 5 years.
Just stole a deal and having fun with it haha joy of new car now watching all the videos. I am so glad I didn’t got trapped for a civic hatchback this time and made a leap for the Elantra GT sports hatchback I am in love with the car this is day one. I owned an evo X and 2008 civic si before so I know little bit about cars.
Not Rappaport I have an older Elantra sedan 2013 and the mpg much worse than the EPA ratings. My wife doesn't even drive the hard. We got 19 mpg almost all city driving when it's rated 27 mpg city. This is with no AC on and not a lot of idling time.
Yes, the MPG's are not the best. But at least they give you a real transmission that feels like something. I'd take that over the competition's CVT any day.
Richard N. Lucky the newer versions get better mpg on the freeway. My 2013 Elantra only got 34mpg the best we ever got. We drove 55 mph mostly highway with very little traffic and hills, no snow and beautiful weather. I made sure the oil and fluid levels were good and the tire pressure is to specs with cold tire pressure. The 2013 looks the best in my opinion but the mpg is terrible. It's rated up to 28 city and 38 highway mpg.
I'm actually considering of going to a Hyundai dealer and test driving this car. I like hatches and this car doesn't look too narly and looks bland, which I prefer. It's all about stealth, for me. Not look-at-me styling or please-buy-me styling akin to its more recent competitors, ala Yonda Sivic. The Turbo version even looks comparable to the Sivic Si....
got this as a rental. nice car. the seat killed my back though, had to get a walmart pillow, after that all good. The warranty for these things is amazing though. Hard to ignore that.
Canada>>> The 2020 base models of Elantra Preferred GT (AT) vs Honda LX Civic (CVT): Civic is $3500 more with 252l (9cuft) less cargo space with rear seats down. Civic has only 13 more HP (174 vs 161) even with the turbo. Civic does not have Blind Spot monitor or Sat Radio as standard. Civic wins for fuel economy 6.9 vs 8.4 l/100km = ~$300 less fuel cost per year's driving (20,000 km) @ $1/l fuel cost =10+ years to recover initial purchase cost on fuel alone. Civic warranty is 3/60,000 km base/emissions, 5/100,000 km power train Elantra Gt is 5/100,000 for base , emissions, PT
So impressed by your reviews, Alex. Much prefer your balanced analyses to those we have in Britain where reviewers are SO in hawk to the Germans. This i30 (Elantra) seems fine, but in terms of styling looks a bit blander than the previous one. A question: why are all your mpg figures in America so terrifyingly low? My Infiniti Q30 with A 1.5 dCi engine gets about 64 in real world conditions, figures I never see in American reviews. Loved your Stinger piece. Hope you go ahead and buy one.
Can you please do a complete review on a 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid? I saw the Fuel Cell review, but I wanna see the driving dynamics of the plug-in. I.e, when the engine kicks in while in EV and regeneration paddles. Plus if the battery is actively cooled and if the Clarity has a resistive heater or a heat pump. Thanks for the great videos!!
I’m replacing a 2003 Toyota Corolla S. I’m not into cars (obviously) and just assumed the mpg specs of any 2018 compact would beat that of my 15-year-old car. I am shocked to learn as I look at the numbers that fuel economy hasn't been much of a priority for car manufacturers. Presumably they are designing for the market, and we Americans continue to be incredibly short-sighted in regard to fossil fuel consumption. ☹️
I'd still take this car over a Toyota or Honda..simple for not having a CVT transmission. CVT's have a mixed reliability...Hyundai got it right for not jumping onto the CVT bandwagon like all the other manufacturers. Even some Toyotas were recalled because of faulty CVTs.
This and the Elantra sedan both have me gripped in a near-obsessive back and forth on which to choose. Each time something makes me decide on one, something else comes along and jerks me in the other direction. Ultimately it comes down to nitpicking at minute details, but these things matter to me on something I'd be dropping $20k+ on. I find it interesting that overall it's such a struggle to decide between two similar, yet very different vehicles. If the GT model had an INFOTAINMENT delete and white accessory lighting instead of disgusting, hard to read blue, it'd be a no-brainer. If the sedan just had the aforementioned white LED lighting and ventilated seats, it'd be a no brainer. But they don't, so I must incessantly nitpick until the end of days...
How much extra does the DCT cost to maintain? My manual transmission has so far cost me nothing. I'm approaching 50k miles. And to say it's a bit more engaging would be an understatement.
Jake Root wait until you clutch wears out and you have to replace it.is a stinking dual mass flywheel and it will cost you a pretty penny. What a stupid design.you can replace it yourself if you know how .only the dual mas flywheel is almost 500 $ .so be nice to your cluch.
Well dealer will charge to change a cluch for a sonata or elantra around 2 k so if you find an independent auto garage arund, 1300$.if they know how to install a self adjusting cluch.
that tablet display would look better with a ducting at the back tethering to the dash, most new car just seems abit unfinished with that style display and hopefully the electric parking is only an option in the sports trim, not a standard item
Like the Elantra hatch (and Kia Forte5 counterpart), but the Kia Niro is better all round (in NA anyways). Similar price, far better mileage, practical and spacious. Just won't win any races in one. But then again, HP is really excessive in many cars compared to what one really needs.
16:00 Direct injection create durability concerns . Additionally, with news from Hyundai and Kia that fuel-mileage claims are being downgraded , there’s a chance that some direct injection implementations aren’t as successful as marketed. If it's necessary to put a lot of money in repair , is the economy of gasoline worth the cost?
1:15 It doesn't. It's still a regular compact hatchback in Europe as well. Corolla hatchback AND Corolla iM? Isn't that the same thing? Acutally, current Focus isn't as European as previous ones. It was designed under the "One Ford" policy with huge imput from all markets where Ford planned to sell it (including US). Overall we ended up with the least European Focus ever, widely criticized for lousy interior and very soft ride.
9:10 Hope the shiny piano black dash trim fad goes out of style soon. It's horrible. Creates glare, looks cheap, and shows dust easily. Don't know who started it, but a lot of car makers, even high end ones, are using it.
I have a 2015 Elantra Limited sedan, it will give me 40 mpg highway and sometimes better. I’m thinking of trading it in for the new sport sedan with the 1.6 T motor. I’m not that worried about the lower MPG but I do think the xtra HP will be nice.
From the back the GT looks pretty crisp but from front 🤔 the grill is two pronounced, two big for such a small car it would look better if it was shrinked down abit
I'm confused... 7:40 "We're in the top end of trim of the Elentra GT, not the Sport Trim, so we do have this large panoramic moonroof." I thought the top end of the Elantra GT is the Sport trim, "Elantra GT Sport", which has that moonroof because it is the top trim.
Does anyone know on the "size" chart that Alex has at 1:46 what the * means with the four cars? Does it stand for the hatchback version? Thanks. Also, surprised by the large sunroof as most cars with a big hatch don't have it because of lost roof reinforcement (think Buick Regal, Kia Stinger, etc.) Nice review, thanks.
The size of the car has very little to do with the inclusion of a panoramic roof. Perhaps you're just accustomed to the offerings (or maybe lack thereof) in the US, but globally there are numerous compact, and sub-compact (and even smaller, called "super-minis") hatchbacks with pano roofs. Speaking of "mini", that's a perfect example, with even the previous gen R56 Mini Cooper having an available pano roof
I agree damieg82. I never said the size of the car, I said the hatch prevents the panaramic roof due to roof structural requirements. The Buick Regal, Kia Stinger, BMW 4 series, Audi A5 series - the list goes on and on. None of those hatchbacks have a panaromic sunroof. In fact, the A5 - the sunroof does not even open - it just tilts.
Hyundai seems to be spending a bit too much time with their lux brands and Kia. They should balance between those and their more popular makes, like the Elantra. I get better MPG from a 2014 Altima.
When you said, "handling not as good as Civic and Mazda3, especially Civic..." that "especially Civic" is a bit too much. I drove new Civic Hatch Sport. The problem is, handling is bound to the steering. And Mazda way better. In fact, my 2011 Mazda3 is better handler than new Civic.
theodorekell absolutely even Mazda 3 is by now 5 yrs old design it does outhandle and be nicer to drive than brand new Civic. Kind of the same as new Accord vs current old Mazda 6 Honda is soooo much hype and rather overrated , it takes 30K to get proper automatic otherwise you are stuck with POS cheap ass CVT.
The Elantra GT & GT Sport have NOTHING to do with the Elantra except the name... totally different chassis and platform. They gave the i30- the Elantra name in the states for familiarity - the ONLY way it's an Elantra is by name.
10:22 pull towards to change down, pull away to change up, THAT'S THE WRONG WAY! WHY are car companies obsessed with the incorrect way of manual shifting. *sighs*
It's better to buy a Sonata, which has more interior passenger space, and big trunk, and 36 MPG per gallon on the highway. You can get a Sonata SE for $19,000 after dealer discounts.
Christopher Calder But not with a manual. That’s the one compelling reason I’d get a sport hatch/sport sedan over the Sonata (I have a 2011 SE 2.0T and I love it.)
The Sonata is a good car, but you're comparing apples and oranges. The Sonata is much bigger than the Elantra GT (2.5" wider and 21" longer), and (to state the obvious) it's a sedan rather than a hatchback. It might be better for you, but not necessarily for everyone else.
I am compact hatch fan. But settled on Mazda6. It is big but drives like small. It has manual tranny and wonderful controls. I drove nearly all manual "sporty" cars, Si, Sport Hatch, Elantra Sport, etc. All in all, with good discounts, Mazda6 Sport Manual for $18.5 is super deal. Great seats, brakes, steering, clutch, handling. Not as quick as small turbo entries but can't beat Mazda attention to detail even on base model.
Alex, you do the best and most informative car reviews on the internet. Keep up the good work!

As usual Alex, your reviews rock! I’m just wondering why you did not compare the Elantra GT to the VW Golf? Isn’t it a direct competitor?

Really keen to see a full review on the 2019 Elantra GT N-Line. Mentioned there'd be a 2018 GT Sport review, but I'm not finding it.
I have recently bought an i30 I will pick it up this Saturday. Can't wait to drive it.
Good reveiw as always! Thanks
Elantra GT N Line Review Request +1. Especially since you never got around to doing the GT Sport :-)
Best car review to be found ANYWHERE !! There should be a Golden Globe for this 👍🏼😁
What an incredible review, this is probably the most thorough and methodical auto review I've ever encountered on RUclips. Well done!
Nice review, Alex. But please, please, please consider show the cargo area of hatchbacks with both of the seats folded down and state volume with seats up and down. For a small car in 2018, those gas mileage numbers are really disappointing. You need to do better, Hyundai.
Not Rappaport I have an older Elantra sedan 2013 and the mpg much worse than the EPA ratings. My wife doesn't even drive the hard. We got 19 mpg almost all city driving when it's rated 27 mpg city. This is with no AC on and not a lot of idling time.
I own an 18 sport and can actually get 40-41 on the highway when using the radar cruise control!
2017 elantra , city milage sucks big time I get 20 mpg, but on highway it's great I recorded 43 mpg on my trip from las vegas to los angeles
Yes, the MPG's are not the best. But at least they give you a real transmission that feels like something. I'd take that over the competition's CVT any day.

Same. The GT Sport is an interesting affair.
Alex, i miss your exclusive trunk comfort index!
I love that the GT had diamond quilted instead with the ventilated seats but they don't have that in the GT N-Line unfortunately
got this as a rental. nice car. the seat killed my back though, had to get a walmart pillow, after that all good. The warranty for these things is amazing though. Hard to ignore that.
Thanks for update. I’m impressed with your presentation
Well designed car for the money. Has Audi lines with a golf rear end and an Infiniti front end. Great standard features and I’m buying one for a song
I really like that interior ...hate all black interiors . This is a handsome car I would not get bored with . Nice job Hyundai !
Did you ever review the Elentra GT Sport? I can't find the video if you did.
Ditto, can't find it.
Awesome review Alex
I think Hyundai is very conservative in their gas mileage estimates. I get 40 mpg on longer road trips.
Same here!
This review was driven through where I grew up. Here's a shout out from Summit Rd!
What about a comparison between Elantra GT Sport and a VW GTI SE?
Mazda3 here I come! I loved this Elantra gt but when I went to the cargo area, the cargo space with the seats up isn't as long
What a great review. Well done and thank you
I feel a little jipped that the car you are reviewing is different from the car in the thumbnail.
2018 Lincoln Navigator anytime soon?
Whaooo ....now that's a review ...very informative ....detailed
Not once was KIA mentioned. Their Forte 5 is a direct comparison. ..
Alex did you ever do a video on the GT Sport? I can't find it. If you didn't than how about doing the new GT N-Line :)

The 2020 base models of Elantra Preferred GT (AT) vs Honda LX Civic (CVT):
Civic is $3500 more with 252l (9cuft) less cargo space with rear seats down.
Civic has only 13 more HP (174 vs 161) even with the turbo.
Civic does not have Blind Spot monitor or Sat Radio as standard.
Civic wins for fuel economy 6.9 vs 8.4 l/100km = ~$300 less fuel cost per year's driving (20,000 km) @ $1/l fuel cost
=10+ years to recover initial purchase cost on fuel alone.
Civic warranty is 3/60,000 km base/emissions, 5/100,000 km power train
Elantra Gt is 5/100,000 for base , emissions, PT

Very helpful review, but why only passing mentions of the Golf and GTI, cars this model and the Sport so obviously have in their sights?
Now that we have the newly redesigned Hyundai Elantra sedan, Hopefully we get an all new Elantra GT Hatchback soon.
In the video you mentioned a separate review of the sport. Will that come out soon?
Thanks for making.p thes high quality review i enjoy these videos so much!

No mention of the Forte5 in the comparison?
Alex. If you have the 1.6 7dtc it is quicker than the 1.6m unless they turn up the boost on the GT Sport

Do the turbo models get a false load floor in the back? I've seen some press stuff showing the turbo's with the load floor and some stuff without it.

9:10 Hope the shiny piano black dash trim fad goes out of style soon. It's horrible. Creates glare, looks cheap, and shows dust easily. Don't know who started it, but a lot of car makers, even high end ones, are using it.
Could you review the tesla model 3? I know it's hard to find, but whenever you have a chance!!!
Alex are you going to review the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross?
There is a mazda3 right next to the golf wagon... Is this a mistake or some European version of mazda3 wagon?
Kris Mier He meant the Mazda 3 Sedan
Benjamín Valenzuela Oh duh! Thanks!
I'm confused... 7:40 "We're in the top end of trim of the Elentra GT, not the Sport Trim, so we do have this large panoramic moonroof."
I thought the top end of the Elantra GT is the Sport trim, "Elantra GT Sport", which has that moonroof because it is the top trim.
Yes, the * indicates hatch, there;s a key on the left side of the screen but that can get cut off on some TVs and other devices
I think it happened to me, thank you Alex.
I wish I could afford one of those😳
Can you do a BMW M240 vs M2 review please ? Thanks!
Why did they take out the CD players in the car there's a lot of people still enjoy there music
Hyundai seems to be spending a bit too much time with their lux brands and Kia. They should balance between those and their more popular makes, like the Elantra. I get better MPG from a 2014 Altima.
review the sport please
Eh. I was excited about this car. But in person it is less than in video.
He said in the video it's coming later...
8.0sec to 60mph use to be considered quick.
Cool vehicle and awesome review! (Not the first comment :D)
Kind of the same as new Accord vs current old Mazda 6
Honda is soooo much hype and rather overrated , it takes 30K to get proper automatic otherwise you are stuck with POS cheap ass CVT.
Nice video. What a filthy car. Definitely needs a good detailing especially the engine bay.
2018 Hyundai Kona review please.
The Elantra GT & GT Sport have NOTHING to do with the Elantra except the name... totally different chassis and platform. They gave the i30- the Elantra name in the states for familiarity - the ONLY way it's an Elantra is by name.
Hyundai needs to get better gas mileage. They trail Honda and Toyota by quite a bit

pull towards to change down, pull away to change up, THAT'S THE WRONG WAY!
WHY are car companies obsessed with the incorrect way of manual shifting. *sighs*
VW Golf rules
Need a n version
Good looking small car. Wish it had a GT performance to go with those letters. LoL.
The 2015 gt looks better
That’s why Mazda 3 wins 😁
This guy does not know the reason to buy different types of cars. Car is not just about the size.
Christopher Calder some people like to drive cars. Not just be a drone
It looks like a three spoke steering wheel.
