Test drove a manual version of this car. Absolutely loved it. It just felt so tossable yet comfortable. Really impressive. Too bad I'm not in the market!
I test drove the manual too and was pretty impressed too. Incredible value for the money considering you can get these things for under $20K. I wouldn't bother with the DCT though......manual way more fun.
Test drove one of these a couple months ago, really enjoyed it, ended up getting the hatch version, GT Sport, such a great car regardless of price. Hyundai really did a good job on these cars.
Have had mine for about a month now and have put 2000 miles on it... absolutely love it. Did a ton of research before purchasing and I do not believe there is a better value for your money available today. After rebates and discounts I was out the door for $17,000. It's absolutely worth taking a look at if you're in the market!
I do have the manual and it does have hill assist. The 6mt can be hard to find but having driven both the DCT (which is honestly pretty good) and the manual i'm very happy with my choice.
How are you still liking it? I really love this car and want one, but the only 6MT I can find is already secured to someone else...so I guess I have to opt for the DCT.
Great review! I just test drove this car earlier today, and I've gotta say this car is just about perfect. To hell with motortrend and car and driver. If it was up to them everyone would be commuting to work with spinebreaking STIs. No, real people use their cars for more than just autocross. This isn't a track car, it's a usable sports car. This car is fantastically well rounded, it's the total Red Mage/Jack of all Trades car. Good performance, good looks, the best warranty , good interior, good space, and a laundry list of features for cheaps. I got quoted for the Sport with the premium package (msrp 25) for 21k. That's corolla pricing. Give it a try, I guarantee you won't be disappointed
Wow, what an amazing coincidence, A review of the CX5 recently (which I bought) and now an ES (which I crossshopped with the Si, but ended up with the other). No leather seats but you sit much much lower and more aggressive bolstering. and while you pay more upfront, you probably get more in resale when fun time is over and you are roped into a CUV Size wise I bought the coupe which is shorter than the sedan, It still feels bigger, but nimbleness is about the same to me (probably because it's 100 lbs lighter than the ES). End of the day, you can't go wrong with either. For me I chose the civic just for having an LSD and the steering rack, but Those are just simple pros and cons people value differently.
East17A idk why Hyundai made that choice. I feel your pain. I have a 2017 elantra se, and I completely love it, but I’m trynna trade it for at least this 💯
Super nice interior, option of either a manual or a dual clutch auto, both fantastic transmissions, tons of features and value, and surprisingly good power in a package that you can walk out the door with for 18 grand new. It looks fantastic too. What's not to love about it?
There was a change from 2017 to 2018. The sunroof and rear cross traffic alert which were part of the premium package in 2017 became standard equipment in 2018. Because of that, the MSRP jumped $150.
My mom has a se model. It’s peppy. Gets Prius gas Mileage. And when you put it in sport mode. It’s really quick for the car that it is. Great little car. Great sound system to.
A weird shift in the RUclips community in the past half-year, from 90% of comments hating on Hyundai to 90% of comments liking and acknowledging their progress
I have the 2018 model of this car and I really like driving it. I get better gas mileage in this car than the Sonata sport i had before this. This car handles turns quit well. The seats are snug and comfortable. In sport mode this car feels really nice. For the money u can't beat it. If u want a car for a great price and feel, this is it. U won't regret it.
Trading my 14 Veloster in for an 18 Elantra Sport this month. Super excited to own one of these. I test drove it and it feels like an amazing car, and a great upgrade from a Velo. Like Matt said at the beginning, it's a mature look on the exterior and nothing over the top. Beautiful, solid machine and it definitely has some get up and go to it! Passing a car is quick and easy even with the DCT even without being in sport mode. Hyundai has been upping their game year after year for the past decade and they're the one brand that grew on me as an enthusiast. They've come a long way in a short time, and if they're at this point with quality, style, reliability and drivability NOW, give it another few years and see what they have in store for us!!
test drove the manual version of this and it was a joy to drive. Nice little sedan without trying too hard.. wish they could bump up the HP a bit around 220-240 to compete with golf gti's though.
Just purchased mine on March 5th. The car can be very split personality in the sense that it’ll be an economy car, or a tyre eating sporty sedan. I’ve managed to get 450 miles out of a full tank by anticipating traffic, and terrain. But I’ve also gotten 300 miles out of a full tank by having a bit of fun. The car hates being driven cold, so it needs to warm up a little. And warming up takes longer than some other cars. The car hates inching in traffic. The transmission and clutch will jolt you around a little. But if you respect the car and the shortcomings, you’ll never notice it’s there. Overall, I’m satisfied with the car. I can drive around the little gremlins, so I don’t have anything to complain about. If you live where there’s a lot of bumper to bumper traffic, avoid the DCT.
I have a 2012 Elantra with 187,000 miles on it with no problems of any kind. What's the reliability factor with these newer turbo models and how expensive do these turbo repairs or replacements get when they fail? I love performance but I wouldn't mind having both as far as performance and reliability.
Got my sport model with 6spd in white with the spoiler. And enjoying it!! Break in engine slow but some times I do rev to 4000 rpm cuz of long roads I live in and ppl are fast drivers here.. Really enjoy it, the engine the smoothness and the muffler, and surprisingly its quiet in the inside. And comes with good tires for wet roads and noise reduction and handling.. Been getting lots of compliments on this car also tint windows from factory.. Had Honda for 12 yrs si 07 model still have parked but this cuz of 195lbs of torque is way better and smaller engine turbo!! 1.6L in all so far so good. And fun to drive.. Like the whole concept of this car.. It work for me
In March of 2020 I bought a Galactic Grey Sport with DCT and also decided I could not part with my 07 CIvic SI sedan, too perfect to throw away. Love my Sport for all the reasons you mention, it's a nice quiet cruiser that will be a racer when you want it. Feels just like a poor mans Audi A4. I ended up continuing to drive my SI in the winter with snow tires. I put a 4in mouth cone filter on the factory intake and that wakes it up considerably, like on the K20 too.
I’ve owned mine for 3 months now and put 12k miles on it, I’ve drove/ road in many cars from Lamborghinis to Tesla’s, nothing puts a smile on my face like the Elantra sport, btw bonus factor to it is the look on people’s faces when you smoke the front tires at a red light and beat cars like base mustangs and camaro’s and even c6 corvettes
I have the Hatchback version of this car, the Elantra GT Sport. Damn that car is fun. Its kinda cool knowing this car was Designed by Peter Schreyer from Audi and ex BMW’s M division chief Albert Biermann.
@@Awsme I've had my 2018 Elantra Sport since spring of 2019 and it's been great, no problems. It's gotten a best of 41 mpg on the freeway (usually gets about 38) and around town 28-32 mpg. It has a JUN BL axle-back and SXTH Element enclosed intake and catchcan. I've added Konig Understeer wheels for 3 season duty and recently added Continental DWS06 Plus tires upped to 235/40's. I've got Blizzak WS90'S for winter duty and never get stuck!
@@klasseact6663 wow the MPG is seriously impressive. Nice mods! I test drove one a few days ago and couldn’t believe how quick it feels for what it is. Hoping to get one hear soon
I'm pretty certain that I'm picking up an elantra sport tomorrow. I'm not sure that my celica is going to make it through the winter and the elantra sport seems to be the best fun car for the money. My only concern is Subaru is finally going to have an amazing overhaul for the 2020 wrx... we'll see what going on as soon as that time comes though.
My wife has this car. It’s a really nice car the only complaint I have is the slow response or lag time when you hit the gas pedal. It’s like hesitant or something.
I think you would have preferred the 6 Speed Manual transmission. I don't think I could get this sports model with out it. This would allow me to get the most of fun out of the car. Most reviews are comparing it to the Honda Civic Si. What do you think?
Not a direct competitor, but would you take this over the 1.5T Accord you just drove? The price in Canada is even with the Elantra Sport and a base/Sport Accord.
towncaptain7 on the east coast pf canada, currently 1500 off ES now, prob be able to knock off a few more with haggling * edit I have been eyeing up a white Accord LX , I want the blue accord sport but those 19 inch wheels would prob be dented with the roads currently
I enjoyed the Accord Sport more, but it's about 6k more here. Also, Hyundai has more aggressive discounts than Honda usually. If the two cars are the same price in Canada though, then I think the Accord gives you more car for the same money.
Subaru refuses to give me press vehicles so I haven't driven one yet. I'm not optimistic about the Impreza Sport though, they have way less horsepower than all the competition. If you want a compact car with all wheel drive though, it's still really the only option unfortunately.
I'd agree on the power, I do think they could have put it closer to the 200hp range considering the "Sport" title on this, though guess they like to throw that title around now "Cough" forester...... But I digress. On the other hand, if your ever out in the Minnesota Area, glad to get ya a sport to test.
Can’t believe they ruined this great looking car in the 2019-2020 model year. I don’t think it needed a refresh so soon. I’m going to buy a 17-18 sport dct!
Hey I'm just asking Elantra sport owners. I'm looking to get the 2021 elantra N DCT as my daily. How has the car held up? (Trans/Ac/Suspension/Electronics? Also how do you like Hyundai service? I'm only wanting to do a exhaust/BoV and hoping the warranty won't be terminated) I had a 2019 Camry XSE as my daily driver and the power was actually decent at 203HP + decent 8 speed trans and 3,290 Lbs. Toyota let me put a full exhaust/ bolt ons/suspension work and they never terminated the warranty. It was hit by a old man unfortunatly and totaled. I feel because the elantra is significantly lighter+DCT at 201Hp it would be faster and still decent mpg and more fun due to a more sporty suspension/tuning ect. Would you reccomend it as a daily or should I look elsewhere? My budget is 25-26k
Actually no, it's not a lease car. Dealers will factor in the low residual value which would increase your monthly payments. The best for this car, is get as big of a discount as possible, finance it or cash buy (again if you can afford it and they have cash incentives), and drive the car until the wheels fall out. I use the lease calculator on the ES before, the monthly payments were equal that to an Si of similar lease terms, because it was residuals were worth so much less.
skifree Lease calculators by the manufacturers aren't remotely accurate. If you look up incentives, dealer selling price residual and what the money factor is for the month, do the math yourself rather take what ever number you get from a calculator. Poor resale value doesn't necessarily mean poor predicted residuals. I mean, look at German luxury cars. They often see some of the worst resale values in the business, but they have some of the most aggressive leasing programs as well.
My only complaint is that the throws seems a little long (I drove one of these not too long ago) and that the doors could use some soft touch. But this is easily the best value for the money.
The problem with the vehicle is that if you want the sunroof, it is part of a $3850 option package which then makes the vehicle overpriced. They did the same thing with the Sport sedan in 2017, but wised up for 2018 and included the sunroof.
Fuuuuuuuuuck, I really like and want this or the gt sport but I'm having a really hard time not going with another AWC Lancer lease living in the northeast. I'm torn!
I'd get an intake and muffler for this car and call it a day. The wheels, although nice, would end up being my winter wheels and I'd end up with a nice set of TSW wheels and Continental DWS06 tires. Thanks for the review Matt😎
Soooo, 10 monthes later I did replace my 13' Abarth with this car but in Electric Blue w/7 spd DCT (could not find a 6 spd, go figure) It was a CPO w/12K and can't wait to drive it more and more😎
I think this is a good car for people who can’t afford the GTI or GLI. The Elantra sport seems to be really channeling those two cars. Seems like a great car for the price. As a GTI owner though, no sensible person pays MSRP for a new car. I got my 2016 GTI SE performance pack for 28k out the door ( MSRP was 33k).
Drewism the N division of Hyundai is bringing in the more powerful cars. The I30N is a more powerful Elantra. We get the Veloster N at the end of the year in the US. In house breaks and seats to keep down the price, but apparently really good still. I saw an interview and they said there might be an awd version under way, but couldn't out right say it. Just search the I30N. You will find a lot of reviews if you get a chance.
I totally agree with those talking about the 2017-2018s looking so much nice than the 2019. I can't understand why they decided to make it ugly. The inside looks a little better on the 19s but Im actively searching for a 2017-2018 with the 6 speed manual. I would probably get a new Elantra Sport if it wasn't so ugly now.

What did you end up going with? I’d definitely recommend the Elantra sport
Another great review. Thanks Matt
If you drive in the right condition, you can do 0 to 60 under 6.3 s.
Is that a grill or a space heater turned sideways...
Very good looking car... I do like it!
I'm thinking of getting one. Thanks for the review
It would look so much better with no chrome on the grille and body. Black it all out.
I like what they're doing here but i wonder how these turbo motors hold up in the long run?
Better than the 2019 to 2021 versions
Matt definitely sounded like he loved the Accord 1.5T 6 speed more.
Do i get the sedan or the GT and look high and low for the manual? Decisions decisions.
Manual turbo under 25k?? yes plz
but it's worth 10k after 3 years though
poy Mu lol yup def a lease car
Actually no, it's not a lease car. Dealers will factor in the low residual value which would increase your monthly payments. The best for this car, is get as big of a discount as possible, finance it or cash buy (again if you can afford it and they have cash incentives), and drive the car until the wheels fall out.
I use the lease calculator on the ES before, the monthly payments were equal that to an Si of similar lease terms, because it was residuals were worth so much less.
Just get Honda lol all headaches gone
skifree Lease calculators by the manufacturers aren't remotely accurate. If you look up incentives, dealer selling price residual and what the money factor is for the month, do the math yourself rather take what ever number you get from a calculator. Poor resale value doesn't necessarily mean poor predicted residuals. I mean, look at German luxury cars. They often see some of the worst resale values in the business, but they have some of the most aggressive leasing programs as well.
i have a problem with the term manual shifting in an Auto, should only be reserved for a car w/clutch. Paddle shifting is more appropriate
Mad Hatter its has a clutch, two to be exact. Hench 7 spd 'dual clutch' automatic. No clutch pedal, either the computer or driver shift the gears.
Still manually changing the gears with the paddles.
My only complaint is that the throws seems a little long (I drove one of these not too long ago) and that the doors could use some soft touch. But this is easily the best value for the money.
Rear multi-link suspension designed by BMW.
James Last is the new BMW working on cars like the elantra or the genisis brand..
*Designed by the guy who used to work for BMW.
Thats guys name is Albert Biermann ex Bmw’s M division chief.
South Carolina Dashxam wow thought Audi’s previous designer was designing Hyundai
christopher kibler Yeah, but the guy from BMW does Hyundai's/Kia's/Genesis's performance things. Like that suspension and more.
does it drive better than accord 1.5 sport ?
The problem with the vehicle is that if you want the sunroof, it is part of a $3850 option package which then makes the vehicle overpriced. They did the same thing with the Sport sedan in 2017, but wised up for 2018 and included the sunroof.
Elantra Sport or Civic Si?
I talk about that at the end of the video.
Golf GTI
Current offer is $4K off the msrp for Elantra Sport. IMO worth every penny for 18500
elentra
Elantra Sport all the way!
Fuuuuuuuuuck, I really like and want this or the gt sport but I'm having a really hard time not going with another AWC Lancer lease living in the northeast. I'm torn!
hyundai really knocked it out of the park with the design of this car. Something i cant say about the civic
I'd get an intake and muffler for this car and call it a day. The wheels, although nice, would end up being my winter wheels and I'd end up with a nice set of TSW wheels and Continental DWS06 tires.
Thanks for the review Matt😎
Soooo, 10 monthes later I did replace my 13' Abarth with this car but in Electric Blue w/7 spd DCT (could not find a 6 spd, go figure) It was a CPO w/12K and can't wait to drive it more and more😎
@@klasseact6663 how you liking it?
I'd take this over a shitvic si any day.
Good review Matt.
They need to make a version with Brembo brakes, upgraded suspension, AWD, 350hp and some racing seats. Time to compete with the STi.
They did, it's called kia stinger
Drewism the N division of Hyundai is bringing in the more powerful cars. The I30N is a more powerful Elantra. We get the Veloster N at the end of the year in the US. In house breaks and seats to keep down the price, but apparently really good still. I saw an interview and they said there might be an awd version under way, but couldn't out right say it. Just search the I30N. You will find a lot of reviews if you get a chance.
Can you do a review of the Elantra GT sport and compare the to the sedan?
Actually, the only thing those cars share is their name, and only in North America. The Elantra GT Sport is really the i30 Sport.
No CD player?? Bummer 😔
Yeah I get it’s 2018 but I still appreciate playing my CDs for long drives. Not a deal breaker
How’s the bottom end torque? I have a 2014 Elantra Sport which has the 2.0 engine and I feel like I have to rev it pretty high.
In fist gear you will burn out the tires easily once the turbo kicks in. Power falls flat on its face past 6k rpm
The 2017/2018 Elantra Sport blows the doors off the 2014 Elantra Sport. You should test drive it.
Great review!
My only downside is low profile tires. All the roads around me suck and that would not be practical
Matt’s winter uniform returns....the pea coat
Seats are great, sadly better than the seats in three of the corvettes I've owned. Great car.
Mazda 3 sport with 2.5 L is the best option at this segment naturally aspirated engine, No Turbo Lag and better fuel economy
NICE Review: 2018 Hyundai Elantra Sport - Value-Packed Sport Compact
Matt does the rear armrest open up into the trunk.
I believe they do have a manual version, right?
yes
Yes
Khoa Huynh yes, didn't you watch the video??????
bikephil me being a noob, asking this question before I even reach that point in the video
Snow in April? It must suck to live in PA.
They couldn't get you a manual to review??
Maybe it was the angle but it looked like you had 3 to 4 inches of headroom rather than 1 or 2.
LSD & this car would perfect.
How much is that if manual sir? Thank you
Elentra sport or GTI?
