Holy Thursday -why only men in the sacramental priesthood for Catholics and Orthodox Christians?

- A question I used to always get at university is: why can't women be priests? Part of the answer is given today. It is wrapped up in who Jesus is, what a priest, sacrament, and the Eucharist is. Grab some coffee and Doritos as I try to make a semester of Christology fit into a 30 minute talk.
mass tonight: • Holy Thursday: Mass of...
More lessons more blessins'. I have slowly been returning to the church because the door that you hold open for us to come to God is filled with light in a dark world.
Your explanations are so easy to follow. Thank you for saying yes Lord I will lead your sheep.
I understand it better every time you explain it. Blessed Easter to all our online parishioners
Haha! Thanks for all your help Diane. Yes I think you've heard me teach this about 8 times now?
Fr. Dave, when you asked, "What is a Sacrament?" my memorized response from the Baltimore Chatechism of 60 years ago immediately jumped to mind: "A Sacrament is an outward sign, instituted by Christ, to give grace."
I didn't even have to think a second for the answer.
Boy, the sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet sure taught me well way back in 1961 when I was 10.
They and you did a good job!
Father Dave, this was the BEST explanation of holy Thursday. Every time I go to mass I will remember this during the concentration of the body and blood of Jesus Christ. Thank you so much for being there for all of us. I am so glad I found your station on RUclips.
thanks Mary. Once it was explained to me in seminary it made sense. it wouldn't be just or fair otherwise. but once you hear the logic it makes sense. Happy Easter. Thanks for your patience
Thanks Father I enjoyed that. God bless everyone watching
Fr. Dave.... so much to discern.... 'The Incarnation forbids It'.... only one of the thoughts !!!
The Spirit flows through your Teachings.... 🙏🙏🙏

Thank you Father Dave for the messages today (Holy Thursday) and on Palm Sunday. While you are unable to livestream is so great of you to take the time to teach us with these messages. God bless you and see you for Easter.
Thank you Fr. Dave for your comments. I know i personally have never taken issue with women not being able to be priests. In my heart, mind and soul, never bothered me. Must be a gift from God.
Loved your explanation.
The picture of Jesus is my favorite one. Have one in my home too.
On my way to Mass in California now.
God Bless you
Happy Easter Fr Dave. So enjoyed the story especially in these troubled times. Happy Easter also to Diane and Jess and their families and to yours to and St Martha’s and the online community. Have a blessed day and give Craigley a hug for me.
I am so grateful to have a pastor (and boss) who is a systematic theologian! The more you study Church teaching it all fits together, it all makes sense. Thank you, Father Dave.
God bless you Fr Dave!
Happy Easter to you, God bless and may Mother Mary stay by you side, love and prayers Marge Menner fr: Elyria, Ohio
Father Dave, You commented about being "brief". Please don't be concerned with being brief! If someone is interested in brevity, God bless them, they can always switch to another video or shut off their computer. You gift is communicating in a B E A utiful and Honest way. You do what YOU do! We can decide to listen or not but many would like to hear all of what you have to say. May the Good Lord continue to bless you, Sean
I am once again listening to you in this video. In an hour from now, it will be time to go to church with my grandson for Maundy Thursday service.Thank you for all that you do for ALL of us around the globe.God bless. 🙏

Happy Holy Thursday Fr. Dave. Miss you this past Sunday
Thankyou Fr. Dave for another amazing Sermon. Your the Best!!!!!😇
You rock Father Dave! Thank you for the lessons you teach on your Videos. I am a convert and continue to learn more and more from you. The lesson today about Holy Thursday and men in the priesthood is by far the best. Thank you for your love of Jesus, your priesthood, and introducing us to Him each week! Blessings to your parents for the gift of you- as you bring so many of us closer to our Lord.
That was awesome! Thank you Father Dave. God bless you.
Thank you Father Dave.
Fr. Dave. Sunday's homily resonated with me. I applied the "bless them - change me " thing to a situation where I felt hurt and distespected - it definitely kept me calm - and after repeating it many times - I felt a shift. Setting my bruised ego aside - I felt better. Thank you.
Wow…thank you Fr Dave! Your explanation was eye opening. I will always think of this at the consecration moving forward.
Thanks father Dave God bless. 🙏 🌹 🙏
Well explained! I love Fr. Dave!
Thank you, Father Dave. Great explanation. Passion of the Christ is a movie I watch every year during Holy Week. Hugs to Cragley 🐾💙 Looking forward to your Easter service.
We adore you O Christ and we praise you; Because, by your holy cross, you have redeemed the world. Amen
Thank you Fr Dave for your time to give us more information and inspirational understanding of why the Lord loves us. Help us to understand the true meaning of Holy Week - Holy Thursday - our preparation to be with Lord during this time. Fr Dave you are super great and thank you for your online teachings. 🔨🔨🎚🎚
Hallo from Lisbon, I have been with you some Sundays during lockdown already. Just to let you know that I wouldn't have missed this teaching for the world. I pray in 5 different languages and I suffer from a rare disease called Systemic sclerosis. Please 🙏 for me while I 🙏 for you. Jesus will do for us whatever is still missing 💖 Josepha
My husband and I also have , like so many , chronic illness. We are praying for your healing, comfort and peace. Amen.
Thank you Father for this beautiful mass. I pray that your brothers infection heals. Please pray that my daughter decides to go to rehab. God bless 🙏🏽
Thank you, and God bless 🙏
Thanks Fr Dave - first time I had that explained to me and understood it. I wish you a happy and holy Easter 🐣
Thanks Eileen. It's long, but it has to be to get all the pieces that contribute to a full understanding and not an insufficient one
Wow! Such a good explaination! Thank you so much!!! I want more videos like this please!!! God bless you Father 🙏🙏
Father Dave, you have a great way of explaining things. God bless you brother. PTL
Hello from South Africa Fr Dave Sending you blessings and thanks for all you do for us. We miss your homilies but love your stories. You make the days of the Holy Week so real. Thank you for all your videos and your preachings. 🙏🏻🇿🇦🇿🇦😎
Fr. Dave, I went thru this video three times to get it all. Good job....you really worked hard to get this across to us. God Bless You for your continued labor for our Lord.
Thank you for that Fr. Dave. I will keep that thought in my heart and prayers tonight...I will 'keep watch' for The Lord and us all on this Holy Thursday!
Thank you. You'll make Our Lord and Padre Pio very happy
I just love to listen to FR. Dave he makes my day Rose from sunny Florida😊😊😊😊😊
Thank you Father Dave. I happened upon this happily as someone recently had a complaint about the men only idea. Now I can share this with them.
Thank you Fr. Dave for Mass today.
So enjoyed your mass Father Dave and missed your mass last Sunday and again next Sunday. Your homilies are very inspiring as usual but I have a hard time about confession. I just like talking to God and not through anyone else. Does that make me a bad person? I don’t know but I look forward to your mass on Easter Sunday. Take care and give Craigley a pat on the head for me.
Thanks Paula. See you on Easter.
Very enjoyable talk Fr Dave.
God BlessYou and thank you Father Dave!
Father Dave, you Rocked the Divine Mercy homily on Sunday, as per usual! Such a wonderful message of Mercy and forgiveness. People truly are afraid to go to confession and are embarrassed to admit to their sins - no matter how big or small they are. Confession is so important to bring peace in our hearts and souls. Thanks for sending out that comfort and confidence that Jesus will forgive us. Alleluia, Alleluia!
PS: we watch the whole Mass from start to finish and are forever grateful to you and your parish for sharing with us your fabulous Masses. You are such a special Blessing.
Love when you share your knowledge like this with us. Would love to see more videos.
Awesome Father Dave! Happy Holy Week. Please keep on teaching!☺️
Thank you Father Dave for this insightful explanation about Holy Thursday. I learn so much from you!! So thankful for you and praying blessings over you 🙏🏼 😊
Thank you for addressing this issue. I am glad to hear a better response than the same thing I heard in elementary religion class. I also wonder if God decided to send the second person of the trinity as a man so that He would have free access to travel, teach, etc. Women in those days would have had no authority, credibility, or ability to travel through the region preaching God’s message.
Thanks! You'll dig the intro to Easter mass. I bring up that very point about women's authoritative credibility in the old world and St. Mary Magdalene. Sadly things developed unfairly for both genders through time and human sin, but God wouldn't let that be the final storyline!
Thank you for spending time with us on Holy Thursday....excellent explanation. Looking forward to Easter Sunday. God bless.🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you Fr.Dave, for remembering us,you online parishioners, with your thoughts and reflections. We love you man!You remind us of Jesus.Thank you,Jim and Nancy Rouse and our Yorkers poo”chewie” Blessed Easter”
Father Dave, Thank you for your comments about Holy Thursday. I carry these five words in my wallet.
Sacrifice, consecrated, contained, offered and received. May God Bless you for coming to us.
Pattay from Florida
Thank you for the explanation
Thank you Fr Dave
I never knew how to answer that question. I just say because “we can’t and that’s the end of it”. But I’m glad you gave us a good 28 minutes explaining this. God bless you with the wisdom you share
That was awesome Fr Dave thanks for all you do !!
You're welcome James. Thanks for hanging in there patience wise
Thank you and God bless you!
Father Dave, You are a Blessed Instrument of the Lord. Thank You for your teachings.
3/31/24. Fr Dave did you write BUGSVILLE. ? I want to share it with my Grandchildren. Thank for a wonderful Easter Mass. Truly a blessing.
What a fantastic thing to see you from Alaska and so tired as I'm sure you were. The children were so great and I'm glad to watch this Mass. You are such a great Priest and so dedicated we appreciate you more then there is snow in Alaska! Have a great trip and when you come back come bring Cragley down to beach in Delaware!
Thank you for clearing that up. Your explanation about why only men are Priests makes perfect sense. And women can be on stage and share in the Mass. And music and song are other ways women can worship. I like your authentic point of view! I love the story A Christmas Carol! One of the most striking parts for me is when The Ghost Of Christmas Present says, "Beware this boy for he is ignorance, beware this girl for she is want.". Wise words at any time I think! Watching the 1951 version of the film A Christmas Carol is my Christmas Eve tradition. Happy Lent Father Dave.
Excellent Stephanie. You must have read the book. I remember reading that part near the end and was surprised it was excluded from most of the plays/musicals/ muppets (my favorite).
And quite possible for women to become deacons in my view, although my view is a minority opinion on that point.
Remember the part in the film where The Ghost Of Christmas Present has the boy and the girl sitting at His feet? That is the part I'm talking about. It's in the 1951 film as well. The Holy Spirit put this statement on my heart and mind in early 2020.
For me God's plan to stop human sacrifice in the name of God by way of Jesus and His message is profound! Thank you for your service. Jesus Christ brings freedom.
Safe travels Fr Dave
Nice to see u Fr Dave...we miss you and your service ...thanks so much for this ... GOD BLESS YOU AND WISH YOU A BLESSED GOOD FRIDAY AND A HAPPY EASTER.....
Thanks Jyoti! I imagine it's already Holy Saturday over there in India. May you and your family have a blessed one.
BRAVO FR.DAVE,WE LOVE YOU I AM 85 Y,JADY,I LOVE YOUR ENERGI,
Thank you Lilli! Happy Easter
I love that song and it always makes me cry ... like nanny used to ☺️
Thank you.
Excellent presentation. However... I have been taught that if I only receive the bread/Body of Christ, then it is OK not to receive the wine/Blood of Christ because...Jesus is present Body and Blood in the Eucharist...your response is appreciated...
Wow, I could have done another 27 minutes- outstanding!
thanks Charlie. it was long though. Happy Easter
Thank you 🙏🏻
Thank You 🙏♥️
🙏 thank you
You r the best
Please also do a teaching on praying the holy rosary. I do feel conflicted sometimes
Thank you Fr Dave
I thought they, the priests, alone could enter the "holy of holies"? But we are all the temple now. Thus the new covenant creating the narrow path, Christ, the only truly good Rabbi. Keep seeking young man, 🔥⚱🌱🌾☘, Word. Grace and peace to you. Pray for our deliverance from idolizing technology. We all have gifts in proportion to our faith, Let's keep building each other up, in Spirit, and Gospel Truth.
I had a feeling this topic was gonna make me upset but actually I needed it and I thank you for talking about it. So many things about our faith I have fought for, just because that IS our faith and it really works. But during the past five or six years of sort of a fog clearing collective consciousness of how so many certain human beings have been minimized, I started to think it wasn’t good enough and women maybe should have greater roles in Catholicism. I don’t know but I believe men and women compliment each other in so many mysterious ways but are neither equal nor subservient to each other except that yes they are BOTH, and it is as it should be, it’s always a constant give and take but I will never be a man, I will never be the same as a man, and man will never be the same as me, a woman, either. It’s gonna be weird, the future we are heading Into, are now witnessing, who and what is a man what is a woman. I’ve got so many questions. But thank you for these insightful explanations today. I sort of understand, I did already understood Jesus sacrifice but not how that meant, no women priests.
Father....Saint Pio.
In Jesus I Trust.
Our Father, My Almighty God.

I want to go to heaven father.Dave.. But i fear when i get there yesuha will show me his scares. Bone showing past the flesh especially in the wrists. That would be horrific. That is facts but so terrible I'd only be able to cry ... I'd feel the suffering ... It would be too much for me to handle . i pray for strength everyday... By our sins we are guilty of nailing yesuha to the cross ✝. And i still sin . how could i. 🙏 ✝ 🙏 🌹 🙏 ✝ 🙏

ps I like the color of your walls, beautiful blue, very peaceful . M, Menner
thanks Marge! Peace be with you. Happy Easter
Why does Fr.Dave look around when he's talking and not continue look at the camera. GOD bless you all and I love you all.
Fr. Dave, I really struggle with your comments regarding women and priesthood. I feel that all the rules around this issue are "man" made. Man interpreted their version of what they thought God meant, or what they think the scriptures meant. Jesus lived in a very male dominant time, most of the people (commoners) were illiterate. It's not that way anymore. I know many Nuns who deserve to be allowed to say mass and consecrate the body and blood of Christ. Thank you for your time and dedication.
So the holy trinity is Mary, Jesus and the holy spirit? Father Dave? I love how you explain things
? The Holy Trinity is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. One God, 3 persons. They choose to involve humanity, men and women, in reception. Hence out creed always includes Mary.
What state is your Church based out of? Thanks🙂
Thanks for explaining this Dave... unfortunately catholics tend to have a very poor understanding of their beliefs. This goes some way towards redressing that situation. :)
Love ya, Fr. Dave, but females CAN be priests in the Episcopal Church in the United States, and I don't know what we'd do without them in the Diocese of Mississippi! There are too many vacancies, especially in rural churches, to limit this privilege to males only.
Episcopal priests are not Catholic priests. Just saying.
Absolutely they can in the episcopal church. There, from what ai understand, the priests and priestesses serve more like ministers, or equivalent to deacons in our church. They do not offer sacrifice. That can be seen in the change the Anglican church made to it's ritual books decades ago when they removed all references to sacrifice
Thank you Fr. Dave. I thank you for your explanation about why women are not able to be priests.I love your Masses. My late husbands name was David. Saw you for first time last year. Your name and sun glasses caught my eye, and watched your Mass about a year ago, and have been enjoying your Masses ever since. Turned my cousin and Two friends to watching you, and love your Masses also. I keep trying to get my fallen out of the Church to watch you, and haven’t been successful yet. 😢.
You rock Loretta. God bless you and your David in Heaven
Ok. Here we go...Fr. Dave...which card game did our Lord enjoy playing with the Apostles? ANSWER: Go fish!
Nice one A.M.!
Interesting perspective. However, I believe Holy Spirit...is infinite...bigger than Law.. ask the Pharisees..( I respectful do not want to put limitations on the nature of God) For these limits may unintentionally make us miss the Great things God has in store for us in the future!
In persona Christi! The priest is not Christ but acts in the person of Christ during the sacrifice of the mass and absolution. The person of Christ is male.
In his human nature
Great joke!
Focus for a moment on Jesus' directive to his disciples beginning in Mathew 20:26. Perhaps Christ was trying to teach us all to choose the lowest place and in so doing we would mysteriously yet really lift everyone up in this process in kindness and love. The fact that the Roman Catholic Church has a hierarchy should point to the work that needs to be done to follow Christ. Perhaps we are looking askew at this and instead of women wanting to be priests, perhaps priests should want to be more like women. There seems to be a touch of hubris in a hierarchical approach to priesthood. Your interpretation of priesthood is also quite archaic. If Christ is this sacrificial offering, then that should be enough and it should have ended the practice once and for all, and in all humility we should all be more grateful. It does make me disturbed to see us continuously reenacting this brutality over and over and over, and for what reason? Hopefully so as not to repeat it, but alas, we seem to repeat it. "Forgive them for they know not what they are doing." Can we learn more?
Thanks for thinking about this. Don't overlook the priesthood God instituted in the Temple and the hierarchy and system of sacrifices he commanded his People to do. What was the purpose of all that? Hierarchy isn't defaultly bad. Hierarchy in Christ's teaching is like the Ferris wheel. The top goes to the bottom to raise up others. That's what Jesus is doing today in making use of us all to build up and extend His Kingdom. He, when multiplying the loaves, didn't have to hand them to the Apostles to distribute. He did. He could have given them out Himself. He didn't have to command, "Do this in memory of me". Which, at it's root, is expressing His intentionnof it being done again. And, like the video shared, the liturgical sense of memory inherent to the Jews and Christian worship isn't a rekilling. But a representing. To re-present you need those symbols. You're close, keep thinking and praying. God will aid you.
@@FatherDave If hierarchy were not "defaultly" bad, why then Mathew 20:26...? Perhaps the addition of Matthew 23:8-12 might spur a different view too of what is going on in our chosen path. I mention this because I am getting older and older and I still can't see why the Church itself can't recognize these directives. It seems the Church often defaults to Paul and not Christ. Historically, you can see that this hierarchy is based on a Roman model and not the Christic one that was modeled by Christ in the scriptures. Christ sent the disciples out with only a staff, Mark 6:8. I have read about some priests who have taken this to heart. The best example though was "Peace Pilgrim." If you haven't read her book, it is quite inspiring.
@@FatherDave ❤
Father Dave needs to trim his beard like the Jesus in the picture behind you.
So if Jesus was so masculine, why are so many depictions of him (such as the painting on your wall, or the Divine Mercy image, etc) so effeminate? And if God's nature is both M & F (as Genesis essentially states), then isn't denying women the priesthood essentially denying part of God's nature? John was "the disciple Jesus loved", and there is no other indication in the gospels of Jesus' sexuality. It therefore would seem reasonable to assume that He was gay or bisexual (or maybe asexual?). What if He had Kleinfelter's syndrome (XXY)? Why would the Y chromosome hold more weight than the XX? Just not buying your rationale for why only men can be priests. I think that more than anything, it has always been more a matter of convenience for the church's heirarchy (because women can inconveniently become pregnant).
God's nature, as in Divine Nature, is neither male not female. God is Spirit. So limiting priesthood to men alone is also recognizing what God has chosen to do, "in the fullness of time" through a freely chosen human nature. John was the disciple Jesus loved, but that is nowhere described as sexual. I don't know where you thought that from? Not all love is sexualized. Friendship, family, even love of one's pets are all not sexualized. But Jesus is quite clear in Matthew 19 in his teaching about sex and marriage. And as we believe in the Trinity each person is God and in a relationship with the others, so too do we, men and women, need and relate to each other. We are equal, but not interchangeable. Lastly, if course, pregnancy is a blessing according to the scripture and not an inconvenience. Keep praying and dwelling on these things Lisa. The Holy Spirit will be there to help you.
Your explanation on why women can not be priests is NOT clear at all. God has a message that needs to be spread. Men are not stepping up to the plate to fill this role yet many woman are willing. You make it seem like they are not equal. So many other religions allow it now. It would breathe live back into our church. Perhaps more people would come back to the mass with more priests to welcome them. Women are part of the soul of the church. They should be welcomed to help lead.
Dude im sure you're a well meaning guy but you know the whole male only priests is nonsense. The gospels are non historical, contradictory theological documents.
