The nerve and skill of Thiem to push Nadal into not one, not two, but three tie-breaks, and what a cold-blooded performance to seal three tie-breaks. Brilliant skill.

Caleb Lim Thiem actually choke away the “serving for the match “ in 4th set and a few points in the tie-break,Rafa didn’t even do anything special to break him back. The one-two-punch at 6-4 should sealed the deal , but he hit it right in the net , glad he came through eventually , he even said it himself there’s some demon right there when he is about to win.

Kinda fell in love with Thiem this match. Rafa’s shots are always good and were good today also, but Dominic’s strokes were just extraordinary tonight-especially that forehand-you could just see the power in them through the screen. Rafa couldn’t battle through those phenomenal strokes(and was having a bad day with the chair umpire... did anyone see if he shook hands with her afterwards?) Really would love to see Thiem playing like this on a regular basis.

Same with me. Thiem has me for a fan, for sure, now. He was masterful. There's such a fantastic, kinetic quality in his ground strokes, off both wings, but his forehand, particularly. I can't get over the power in his one handed backhand, though! Confession: this is the first match I watched carefully enough that I even noted that he uses a one hander! He hits it so flat, and with such power, it's easy to miss. Anyway, congrats to him, for sure. Unless Federer pulls off a TRUE miracle in the semi, I hope Thiem wins this thing. Either way, I think I may have settled on the player to pull me through, beyond Fed's retirement! That's a bigger statement than you might imagine. I've generally said I'd probably quit following tennis when Federer walks away. So, there you go...

You knew from the first set, that Rafa was up against it. Struggling to counter the brutal power of Thiem. He tried all the tricks in his repertoire, including high topspin to Thiem's single hander. But to no avail.

He scared Nadal in the US Open, then proceeded to win his first Masters 1000 on a hard court, along with other Masters 500 events on faster courts and his incredible wins against Federer and Djokovic in the ATP Finals. Fantastic to see Thiem finally defeat Rafa in a Slam. I thought he might crumble after failing to serve it out but it was very well deserved in the end. It's interesting that he won most of the long rallies and Rafa was the one often trying to cut points short. I wonder if this win might give him a mental edge should they meet at the French Open again this year! It will certainly give Thiem A LOT of confidence now. I expect him to beat Zverev and make the final.

Vulnerability was still there as I have been saying....one of the instances is when he couldn't convert 5-3 in the first set...This was kind of expected outcome. Good hard fought battle and I am not surprised with the outcome. Domi is correct, you do need some luck and to win against Nadal. Congrats Domi!!

Thiem isn't 'next gen'. He comes from a group of players in their mid 20's. Next gen are 18-23 right now.

I always knew that this kid was the best from the upcoming generation. He was unlucky to lose 3 times to Rafa in RG " Rafa's house" but if it wasn't for him he would have won 3 by this time. Great match.

It was an impossible draw for Nadal.
But I am glad he lost to Thiem and conserved energy than go all the way to lose in finals.
Thiem is a great player and about time he got a grand slam title

    • @JordanCrooks

Great Point. Thiem plays a lot like Rafa. He will probably beat Zeverev in 4, and one can only hope he can beat Roger or Djokovic in 5.

    • @jamesdesch3201

Yes, your right. Nadal had a difficult draw. Even if he won tonight, it would have been hard for him to finish the deal. Thiem is a force on hardcourts now, and can take out the top players in short shrift. Playing Thiem in the quarters is unlucky for sure... No sooner then Semi. I like Thiem to win the whole thing, only if Fed puts up a fight tomorrow. If Novak breezes, I just don't think Thiem or Zverev will have the stamina to finish it out with a win.

I’d be happy for Sascha or Domi to win. They are deserved and have been putting in the work, knocking on the door for years. I’m tired of the dominance of the big 3.
