2 years after, I found your video and feels less daunted by QMK keycodes. Starting simple, I then evolved my key codes into a 5 layers monstrosity. Without your video I couldn't muster the courage to start. Thank you!
@@prestonjones7431 I found some sample layouts if you are interested. This one uses tap-dancing to turn the spacebar into a function key. Tap for space, hold for function layer (arrows and nav keys, etc.) github.com/garrett/qmk_firmware/blob/garrett/keyboards/annepro2/keymaps/garrett/keymap.c
very cool, i've been using qmk for a few years and had no idea this was the usecase for one shot layer, gonna give it a shot! i think it'll be very handy. wish i used it before!
a video worth instant sub. now that i watched this, i regret stick with TKL for this long (10 years +), always had the urge to use 60% but just didnt know better way to do the Funciton keys. wow, that is game changer

I tried out the one-shot layer before. I personally find it a little slow for the things I want to do, especially when I have to repeatedly type certain keys. I just ended up switching to LT and a bunch of extra layers. It's a lot faster that way.
@@Labeled90 That's what I figured. There aren't too many mass-produced boards that will run QMK (if any). My KC60 was the last board I had that allowed me to remap the FN key wherever I wanted it and it bit the dust. It ran TMK I believe.
@@Labeled90 What's yours if you don't mind me asking? What one are you planning on building? I've been looking at the Corne, and the GK64xs among other kits and it's not always obvious which ones will support QMK.

How do you like your Canoe? That's a beautiful board. Does the PCB allow remapping the function key location? I had a KC60 keyboard that allowed me to move the FN key to the right Alt position so I could use my thumb for momentary layer changes and it was excellent. Sadly that one bit the dust. This looks like it would be a good system as well. I also discovered TouchCursor that enables a space bar function layer.
i use left caps as LT (1, KC CAPS). i found that holding it with my left pinky is the easiest to reach the left side of the keyboard for your and my use. you can also tap it to use caps.
@@thump3r That's awesome. The alt looks like a sweet board and the DZ was on my list of pcbs to get. Thanks! Do you happen to know if the DZ allows remapping the FN key to the right alt key?
@Peter Mortensen yeah that's not the case, the guy just wants to show off his col thing. I am making an ortholinear now and when I finish building it I will record a video showing it and also explain how to make one and get it to work. This dude simply wants to parade his shitty 65%

I'm at a similar place right now, starting my custom keyboard journey and this video made me decide switching to a 40% keyboard QMK keyboard!
I couldn't agree more. One the best video I watch so far
If you want, you could make a followup to this video that shows how to actually configure these in the qmk configurator. That would be pretty helpful.
@Walker's Keyboard Science Seconded. I wouldn't even know where to begin to implement this.

@@prestonjones7431 Same. I think this is a programmed feature and not one thats build into the QMK config tho?
It's not in configurator - you have to edit the keymap file itself by hand

Man, those Canoe keyboards are cool. 65% is the form factor of the gods (next to a left-side number pad : )
Just bought a 45% (Cajal GB) so this was helpful and I'll definitely be needing it. Thanks!
Great demo. Thanks for sharing.
Love the demo! Could you do a follow up video explaining the code behind this feature?
Can I do that for special letters? Like I want to hit Tab once, then press a and get ä. Hit Tab once, shitf + a and get Ä?
Thanks for the video, it inspired me.
that alt tap dance is a revelation
So that’s pretty cool. ⌨️

Maybe I'll try both... Tap for one shot layer, tap hold for fn+alt, and double tap for layer toggle!
Could one program a "Lock" key?
E.g. "key" activates a layer for the next click, "Lock"+"key" changes the layer until you press "Lock" again.
@@elsasslotharingen7507 sounds like a toggle layer?
thank you very much,
I use caps lock as my fn. I'm about to build a new board this is good to know!
What board allows you to remap the Fn key to caps lock?
@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 any keyboard with QMK firmware. They're fully programmable to whatever you want.

you can do it applying the same logic but changing the QMK code and flashing into your Keyboard

Jokes aside. Great video!
Best use for tapdancing: capslock pressed -ctrl tapped-esc. Say hello felllo vom users
Mmm, nice setup.
whats the keycode you use on the new QMK configurator for tap dancing function? I keep getting error when i use Lalt_t and MO in the box....
I didn't use the configurator, sorry
Friend, did you discover what code to activate tap dancing on the alt key?
Thanks!
Please do a follow-up video explaining how this can be implemented.
why dont you show how to do it on qmk instead of pushing alt and pressing 5
can I use VIA to set that up?
no, you have to create your custom firmware and flash into your keyboard
