Season Finale, Rose and Dalek are my top S1 stories.
@@andrewlevitt9386 Fine choices, Andrew!
S1 was a perfect showcase of what Doctor Who delivers - from kid friendly burping bins to discussions on morality and taking a stand in order to do the right thing. The show's premise was delivered to a new audience bit by bit so as not to overwhelm them (take note TV Movie!) and Eccleston's Doctor was superb, going from battle scarred survivor to someone willing to sacrifice his life to save the person who had given him a renewed sense of worth. And he was funny and charming to boot! Tennant may have taken the baton, but it was Eccleston's performance that captured the nation and ensured there was a race to keep running. I loved seeing these time capsules from that time - thank you for sharing!
You're very welcome! And thanks so much for this lovely summary of Series 1. 👌
This explains why only the first episode was leaked online, they couldn't be bothered to digitise the VHS 🙃
Hahaha! 😃
Dalek is my favourite series 1 episode "Doctor? The DOCTOR!?" still gives me chills 😄
Hi! Yes, it's a very powerful piece of work. I love the Doctor's unhinged lust for vengeance!
To me, those screeners are saying "The Doctor is back!"
Yes indeed, JT! Hope you're well. 👌
“Dalek” is a great episode my favourite from this first come back Doctor Who Series 😀👍
Ah yes, good choice Paul! Am getting a lot of 'votes' for Dalek and Father's Day. :)
Those are so cool! I can't believe they made New Who on VHS!! That's so amazing!
Hey there Alex! I'm a fan of your channel - love your boundless enthusiasm for Who. :) And yeah, it feels delightfully odd to see these episodes on VHS. Actually, 2005 was the year when the major US chains stopped stocking VHS, Google tells me...
@@jarnopp Aw, thanks, Jason! Always a pleasure to see your high quality videos! What fun to get things like this in advance!!! I really want you to get that Dalek Episode 6 one to complete the set! Lol!
Excellent video! Please do show us the others too!
Thanks so much, Kristan! Appreciate the encouragement. Glad you enjoyed.
Series one favourite episode. Either Dalek or the Moffat two parter (I count it as one "story") The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances. Those are the ones I rewatch most from the first series of NuWho.
Yes indeed - both stormers!
Hands down, Father’s Day is probably my favorite of Series One. It makes the Doctor, Rose, and even Pete, in ‘Father’s Day’, have more of a back story than many of the original companions ever had in Classic Who! Love it!!
Hey there Edward! Welcome. And yes, I certainly remember FD as being very good. Really need to take another look some time. :)
I remember when Rose came out, or really before it came out, when a Canadian TV channel leaked out the unfinished version of the episode with incomplete effects and John Pertwee era music instead. And then when Rose finally aired in the UK it got interference from the Graham Norton Show ruinining the "Run!" reveal!
Yes indeed! There were some extraordinary moments at the time. That Graham Norton thing was crazy! The fact that such a bizarre thing happened during Who's crucial comeback...
This is amazing I wish I had these vhs in my who collection. FWI just discovered your channel today, good stuff.
Welcome! So glad you enjoyed this video. Check out the Doctor Who playlist in the video description for more Who videos. 🙂🤘
@@jarnopp any way to get your autograph sent on an index card? I'm a big fan of Army of Death. Didn't even add two and two together that you were the same Jason Arnopps lol

Hey there Nathan. Welcome! So glad you’re enjoying the channel. Lots of stuff to check out, as you say. Thanks for your sub, especially as I would love to reach 3000 by the end of the year!
@@jarnopp good luck reaching that goal. I'm sure you'll get there, what with the great content!
@@NATHAN-gl9ns thanks so much! I appreciate the confidence ☺️
@@jarnopp no problem. I especially liked the monster book video
@@NATHAN-gl9ns Yeah, I love that book! I've also pulled it out in at least one of the livestreams
Interesting how Father's Day is presented in Letterbox widescreen whereas the rest is in the usual 16:9. Also somewhere I have the VHS copies of series 1 that I taped back on the first broadcast.
Interesting spot, Ryan! Great to hear you still have those tapes. So that means you have Graham Norton interrupting Rose? 👀😀
@@jarnopp I do indeed, admittedly I thought it was diagetic sound when I first saw it. Interestingly there are certain scenes in Dalek and the Parting of the Ways where they changed the audio for the DVD/blu-ray release, almost like a different take was used on certain lines.
@@ryanmcgivern1164 Oh! That's interesting. You clearly have quite the idea for detail. What do you do for a living? 🤔
@@jarnopp honestly I work in a hospital but I used to use audacity a lot for my old college work and learning audio design too.
@@ryanmcgivern1164 Ah yes, that makes sense. I would find it quite hard to notice swapped lines, I reckon! Unless it was a really key moment. ☺️
Wow, I never knew these existed!
Exactly the response I was hoping for! Awesome, hope you enjoyed. :)
Great video Jason more please 😀👍
I shall do my best to comply, Paul! :) Thank you.
Oh this is fantastic! I have home recordings for Dalek, interestingly, i cannot find anywhere online --- the CBC Doctor Who Commercial Ques. Might try to digitize it. I'm quite interested at the start here, is the Doctor Who Theme at the menu the official release mix or a different mix such as the ''trailer theme'', Just really wondering about that.
I'd love to get my hands on these at some point, would be really cool to add to the collection!
My absolute Favorite episode of series 1, has got to be Dalek, simply because it was the first episode I ever saw and it got me hooked. It's also the home video recording I mentioned!
Hey there Simon! Thanks for sharing your favourite. Was Dalek the first ep of Doctor Who you EVER saw? That must've been cool. In terms of the musical theme, I wish I could remember! Will have to check it sometime.
I think I'd go for Father's Day as my favourite from S1, I like the timey wimey bit when they go back to the same point and see themselves
Thanks Ryan! Interestingly, a fair few people are citing Father's Day as their fave! You Are Not Alone... :)
Hi Jason. Please carry on with S2, S3 and S4 promo material videos. Do you have Big Finish DW promos you could make a video about?.
Thanks for the vote, Andrew - and was great to see you in tonight's livestream. No Big Finish, sadly!
Interesting seeing them on VHS
Nice seeing you had a fresh haircut
stay safe Jason
Hey there Scotty! Well spotted on the haircut front. :) Glad you like the video. You stay safe too. More Who content coming before the New Year!
@@jarnopp nice
@@scottybee8 I did think you'd like that! :)
Thanks Jason great video and thanks for sharing your collection with us! Come to think of it I still have all my VHS recordings of Series One up in the loft.
Thanks very much! And hooray, this means you'll have a direct recording of That Graham Norton Moment in Rose. :)
Oh yes THAT moment! 😂 In that case I definitely need to keep those videos. And that reminds me, Norton also hijacked the end of Series 5’s The Time of Angels. He’s definitely a recurring villain.
@@cloisterbellpodcast Did he? Haha, I must have repressed that. :)
Very interesting, I wonder if you can buy these on eBay or something. They would be cool pieces of Doctor Who to own.
Thanks Dan! And funnily enough, another commenter here alerted me to the fact that the Rose DVD recently sold for about £50 on eBay. So these things clearly do come up! I'm guessing the DVD appears much more often than the VHS tapes...
That was really interesting. I'd love to see more. Question do if you can remember the screeners differ in any way from the broadcast episodes? If I remember correctly the Partners in Crime screener from series 4 had Rose's appearance cut to stop spoilers.
Yes, I believe some screeners were 'cut' to avoid spoilers leaking into the public arena. The very end of Army Of Ghosts was cut short, if I remember rightly. Also, some of these screeners had early, unfinished FX and/or temporary music scores.
Why was ep1 only on DVD? At the time, was it to make an initial splash, but it was cheaper and easier to use VHS tapes for the rest?
That's a very good question, Jon, and I'm honestly unsure. Can't have been that much cheaper to make VHS than DVD, and it's not as if more than maybe a hundred of each of these would have been made! Odd, isn't it.
I also assumed the same about production costs, but was clutching for a reason for the format change. The only other thing is maybe DVD players weren’t quite so ubiquitous then amongst reviewers. My only DVD player at the time was my PS2 - it was a compelling reason for many to buy the console as a cheapish DVD player, as well as for a games machine. So maybe the format change was due to limited penetration of DVD players (sounds rude! 😃)
@@MightyJonE That could be the case, although DVD had existed since, when, the mid 90s? Weirdly, I think VHS production for retail ended in 2003 or something like that. And of course, this 2005 series was initially only released to consumers on DVD? Mysterious, eh? 🤔
Yes, I remember the first Matrix movie caught the wave of the initial DVD boom when it was released on DVD, and sort of became the poster child of that boom. I think the film was in cinemas in 1997, so yes, DVD players would’ve been taking off easily from ‘98. But, knowing BBC, if there were some blank VHS cassettes lying around, and they saved a few pennies over DVD production, I’d imagine the BBC plumping for VHS! 😃
OR could it be not all DVD players were compatible with the type of recordable DVD they were using? And did later press promos follow the same pattern - ep1 DVD followed by VHS? Can’t imagine it wasn’t long before they were all DVD
I Saw The Rose DVD on eBay A Few Weeks Back
Oh wow. Can you remember how much it was fetching?
@@jarnopp About £50
Did you ever get unfinished copies during 2004-05 before all the visuals were finished to give information to the public? Like the famous leaked viewing copies given to america round series 7?
Hello there! I do seem to remember that some of these VHS tapes carry slightly unfinished versions. The Rose DVD may even feature unfinished effects - can't remember now!
@@jarnopp would you get in trouble for showing some unfinished material?
@@KeiranCounsellKC1994 Yes, sadly copyright issues prevent me from doing that!
@@jarnopp thats such a shame as there would be so much interest around unfinished effects and stuff
@@KeiranCounsellKC1994 Yes, it's a shame. 🙂
Oh I was purely in ecstasy to see Chris Eccleston as the new Doctor! Total heartthrob! Then they replaced him with that little sexpot Tennant! Grrrrr.
So how did Matt Smith then rate on the sex-o-meter?
He doesn't, bless him. But CAPALDI! Off the charts.
@@francinehibiscus350 phwoarrrrr!
Interesting how Father's Day is 14:9 letterbox whereas the rest seem to be 16:9 full height anamorphic
Oh, really? Interesting. 😊👊
Is theme music in the menu the unused variant? =)
I didn't have a proper listen! But that would be interesting to discern. :)
