    You might look into a banding tool instead of using logs to weigh down your lumber. That way keeping different species separated and easily moved in manageable bundles might be a time saver and reduce warping.

    I was wondering if you would please explain why you are going to use pine for the playroom? The cabinetmaker in me would use the pine for 2x4s and maple or oak for the playroom and walnut or cherry for the office. I am sure you could find a kiln, even if you had to drive a load down to Nathan. Notty pine really went out of fashion in the 50's. I have ripped a lot of it out redoing basements, sunrooms etc. You have a lot of hardwood on the property and if drying is your only problem, you are smart people you could figure it you.

    Gday Mike ,iv been watching your videos for many months now ,and i was wondering what if you built your self a saw dust though . about 10 feet long, 16 inch wide and 10 inch deep to catch the saw dust , and also add about 10 inches to the saw dust shut ,that would give you about 2 feet of walking space down by the saw mill. you could build 2 of these and when one is full you could move it by forklift, what do you think,
    hoo roo,

    Mike look at getting some banding material to band that wood. You wouldn’t need to put weight on it and then you can move it with the pallet forks with out worrying about dropping it. Keep up the good work your projects are coming along great. Better yet you could use those 1” ratchet tie down straps save you a lot of money.

    • @markheintz1878
      @markheintz1878 3 года назад +1

      Green wood will stain from steel banding, it will also stain if you don't use hardwood stickers between the layers of boards. Usually if the stickers are placed carefully lined up, tipping isn't an issue. But for added security, throwing a ratchet binder on a pack when moving them isn't a bad idea, other than the fact it pushes the boards together and eliminates some air flow to the edges. Air flow is key to initial drying and removing that surface moisture, especially in high moisture woods like red oak and Cherry. Ash is a drier wood so its a little faster initially. But it still takes a kiln drier to get it to 8% and remain dimensionally stable. Waiting for Mike to announce plans for a small solar kiln at his operation. Woodmizer has made them for many years in different sizes. I have also seen them built from shipping containers for drying wood or firewood in baskets. A former coworker built a setup for drying his firewood. He has a niche market in Chicago, he makes a killing, and moves it by the semi load.

      @@markheintz1878 ok I was thinking the nylon banding material with the steel s hooks for banding. I didn’t know that the steel would stain green wood👍 I’ll remember that. Then after commented on using banding material I forgot that stuff is about a $500 investment to get started. Thanks for your knowledge Mark. 👍🏽

    • @markheintz1878
      @markheintz1878 3 года назад

      @@samengler539 plastic as you mentioned is a great alternative, its also alot easier to reuse it than steel banding. At the mill we did use steel banding when it was shipped to a kiln, but only because it would be removed in a couple days, then restacked for the drying chambers.

    • @samengler539
      @samengler539 3 года назад +1

      @@markheintz1878 Hi Mark. You mention that if you band the wood it would pull it together and would slow down the drying process. If you was to lay a 2x4 across the top of the stack then put the tie down strap under the pallet and over and around the center of that 2x4 it would pull the wood down and tight and not pull the would together. Or mike Mark and I have it all figured out for you. Cheap and easy. Two. 2x4 cut just over with of you wood stack and two ratchet tie downs.

    • @markheintz1878
      @markheintz1878 3 года назад

      @@samengler539 yes that would work too. Your idea would be good for stacking in the yard. The packs only need to be tightly banded when shipping so they don't lose their shape or honeycomb on the truck. Kiln dried and surfaced pine are the worst for that. If the ends aren't tight against the bulkhead or each other, one hard brake and the centers all come out, it makes a mess.

    that much extra work placing them with a set of forks.

      He is cutting one board at a time, probably 1+1/8", or 2" if he wants construction lumber. The cant is the heart thats left after you have taken all the salable lumber and usually they are sawn into pallet deck boards or stringers for pallets. Cants are usually 4x4, 4x6 or 6x6 if you have a market for wide deck boards. Cants are also usually very low quality wood, hence the end use in pallets.

      I hear you on lumber prices. It's nuts. Here in mn, 1/2 osb is 33 a sheet, it use to be 8 or 9

    Mike, not trying to sound critical but on your interview shots, you know, the ones where you or Melissa or both stand in front of the camera; could you turn the auto focus off so that you stay in focus instead of everything else. I love watching you and learn so much about you in every installment keep up the great work. And, good luck with the big project it looks great so far.

    It is so good to see that Melissa's "attitude of gratitude" is lived by all of the Morgans! The message from daughters Hannah and Eva at the beginning was a wonderful touch!
    Mike! You getting a little grumpy??????
    Say it ain't so! 😱😱😱

    Mike - I was watching a video by - Sawing with Sandy- he made a rack to throw his off cuts / bark cutoffs onto- it is made so he can chain saw up the pieces into firewood lengths very easy- just though you might make use of an easy way to use up your off cuts- take care

    Perhaps use ratchet straps to pull the cut timber tight and flat while drying. Love your content. Have a blessed day.

    Love the channel. Curious if you can sharpen your blades on the sawmill?

    Just a friendly suggestion. When turning the log, if you get the hook lower under the log you can use your leg strength to turn it instead of finishing the turn with your back. Growing up my father had a sawmill and that is what we did when not in school, so I learn ever way to try to make it a little easier on the body. Thanks and I continue to enjoy watching the progress!

    As I watch y'all use the different tri pods, I remembered that one of them got blown over and trashed a camera. Have you thought about using a weight bag and cord to hold the tri pod down. a small sand bag made from socks or if you wanted to invest there are shot filled weight bags too.

    Sawing goes quicker with a good helper. Now, you can teach Mellissa how to run the saw mill. She would be good at it.
