Damn, I don't share any of the same criticisms. I seem to have approached the game a lot differently. I was happy and eager to explore the map, so I got obtained most of the collectables and other tracked things naturally. It didn't feel forced and I didn't get tired of it. I think powering through the story and leaving the bulk of the map clearing for post-game was detrimental. I don't enjoy playing any game like that. I can't help but wonder if you were in a bit of a mood when starting the game because you didn't seem to enjoy it from the beginning.
I'm sorry that you were glitched out of the platinum. I wouldn't say that this is one of the best games I've ever played, but it is one of the best experiences I've had playing a video game. I hope that you return to it one day and have a much more pleasant time. Thank you for another Platinum Journey!
That's okay. We all have different opinions.
I explored a good chunk of each map as I went and did just about any side quest that popped up. Those were grand, good at times. Certainly didn't power through the story, although I understand it might have come off that way in the video.
I did consider covering side quests but they isn't all that much to talk about.
Unfortunately, I could tell something was off within the first 30 minutes. It felt so slow. The game capture was recording and I clocked a cutscene at 7 minutes. Don't remember anything in 2018 being that long.
Myself and Ragnarok didn't click I'm afraid, but I'm glad you enjoyed it so much.

What a brilliant episode. And a fantastic message that if you aren't enjoying something, it is perfectly okay to move on. I never managed to finish a single playthrough of this game, as I had the same issues you did with not caring about the side stories that were constantly shoved down your throat.

Adam one of your best videos yet! I feel heartbroken for you for being bugged out of the platinum, but it feels like you showed us what modern gaming has come to. I am also proud of you for not grinding it through. I have seen you play through games WAY harder than this which you got your hard earned platinum. Overall though your analysis of the game was spot on and the amount of padding in this game made it feel like a lot of the same thing with pointless character play being Atreus. There are hours of this game that could have been shaved off. Bravo to you sir for having one of the best gaming channels on RUclips.

I always wondered what would happen if you were unable to obtain the platinum, always figured it would be a multilayer trophy or something that's just a crazy grind. Didn't expect to see it happen this way. Still a great episode though.

Man I feel bad for you Adam, my experience with this game was spectacular, I had no gltiches and tho I feel you about the gateways, the collectibles weren't as bad for me, they were tedious and boring but felt rewarding to finish, regardless the glitch you got is horrible, I had not even heard of that glitch, my play through was seamless, you had it extremely rough, I really hope you can finish the platinum and find the courage to do ng+ man, this video itself feels tensioned and sour, a irregularity for your videos, I hope the next few treat you better man, cheers

Impressed you were able to go through with this one, even though it bugged out. I played through the game and immediately stopped when I saw the same collectible slog as the first game. Completely skipped it this time around and don’t plan on going back.

Adam I have been a fan from you since a few years back and been completely honest I am devastaded at it as well as you. It is not fair to enda for you like this, in some ways you have been a gaming role model for myself without you I haven't even attempt to go for hard platinums. I know it sucks right now, but maybe in the future you can make a redemption bonus episode of the platinum on this game. I just do not accept that one person that motivates me ends like this, if I have to motivate you to end it in the future I will. You are my hero man!
Thank you. I'm okay. It is one thing to challenge yourself and overcome an obstacle, there is satisfaction to that. To get the platinum for this, I'd just have to do most of another playthrough on easy hunting collectibles...so boring. I can spend my time on better things.

Adam , I have been a fan for a really long time (since re2 I think ) and really enjoy commenting because you usually comment back I really like how well you treat your community and take feedback very well. I sadly got the ending of this episode spoiled for me because I wanted to read the comments after showing up 2 days late. I’m blown away that this happened and can’t help but look back to the modern warfare episode as well as something very similar happened to me where my ps5 crashed and I lost all my data and I didn’t really like gow ragnarok so decided fuck it and never went back. Anyways great video man I really enjoy your content and hope you don’t stop for a long time. Cheers !

Wow. I've not even played Rangarök yet, but this video makes me realise why I might be holding off. I'm fully with you on your collectibles stance. I never thought we'd see a Platinum Journey where the trophy escapes you. Credit to you for deciding that enough was enough.
This might be the only video on RUclips where a title like 'God of War Rangarök's platinum destroyed my soul' is actually valid.
Hopefully TLOU Part 1 gives you a better experience, I'll look forward to it.

Cannot tell you how excited I was to wake up this morning to see a new episode! What you said about this God of War was dead on and how my son and I felt about the game. I don't care about what other people are doing. I want to play as Kratos and see how they interact with him. The first game had its problems, but it was better than the second game.
Glad I'm not alone. It is actually surprising how many people agree with my negative feelings about Ragnarok.

Cyberpunk 2077 glitched out for me recently over 100 hours into the platinum, and I gave up- didn't want to do that again - it wasn't worth it in my opinion, I just went to another game I wanted to play instead of wasting time grinding away for a trophy i basically earned already.
You still earned it though (technically), which is still good. Looking forward to the next video! Keep it up :)

Yeah, it was one side quest that bugged out and technically never registered as finished. I only realized after doing every other side quest and storyline, and then said there's no point 😅.
I moved on and started playing through the first three God of War games for the first time (already played GOW PS4 and Ragnarok). I only just finished God of War 2 about an hour ago with the platinum (while watching this video!).
Personally thought the first game was better than the second in terms of story, but the second was better in gameplay (some levels confused me a lot though). Looking forward to GOW3 soon! :)

Everything you said there about not caring about any stories except Kratos' is exactly how I felt. I have beaten the story but have been putting off the collectible run for over a year now. It's so unnecessary. Hopefully I don't encounter the same bug as you it's unbelievably infuriating.

Yeah I had the same feeling when playing the game. The point of the no cut camera is that you can follow one character uninterrupted through the whole game, which is really immersive. But if you start playing as other characters then the no cut camera sort of losses the point.
And as you say, Kratos is the one interesting character. Everyone else are just interesting when interacting with Kratos and when not interacting with him, not so much.
I know that the original plan was to make 3 games but due to the development time of the games they only opted to make 2 and you feel it. It felt to me like they crammed in story for worth for 2 games into this one and it just became to much. The game felt bloated.
When I played God of War 2018 it took me about 40 hours to do almost everything in the game and it was fun. Ragnarök took 50 hours but it felt sooo muuuuch loooonger.
So sorry mate. I was looking forward to this episode but to see you get so close but the worst happened. Chin up mate you got the next one in the bag

To be fair God of War 2018 was about Kratos AND Atreus so playing and exploring his Feelings and motivations was interesting. Nonetheless the first games story was better.

I given up with trophies now :( Too much work, plus stressful at times with all the collectables u must find.
I jsut wanna enjoy the game now without having to take twice amount of time to finsih the stroy just to find collectables and the remaining trophies to do. I spend weeks to platinum a game. It happens Adam, unfortunately for game developers trophies are an afterthought so if a collectible or miscellaneous trophy doesn't pop, they usually just recommend starting a new game or if there is enough of an uproar, patch it later on. Hopefully you get your platinum at some point.
Yeah, it really sucks. I think this platinum is long gone unfortunately.
@@AdamMcDermott Don't give up, I understand there are certain games which can make you feel defeated but take it one step at a time. Dead Space 2 took me three months mainly because of Hardcore difficulty but seeing you persevere gave me the inspiration to see it through. You don't have to do it now, just maybe play one story mission a day or go back to it at a later date. Keep up the great work.

This was a perfect episode. Clips of the game to get you invested but not so much to drag on. Critique of both the game and the trophy list, all topped off by that dramatic finale.
Honestly Adam, while I didn't have the same struggle as you,I came out the other side feeling negative about Ragnarok. Those sections with Atreus went on for way too long, were utterly Pointless and are the reason I'll likely never play the game again. God of War (2018) however... Most likely.

@@AdamMcDermott honestly I've complained to you about the episodes where you showed too much gameplay, so this (to me at least) shows how much you've honed your craft.
I'm sorry you didn't get the platinum but it really added to the entertainment at the end there. I'm struggling to find enjoyment in games anymore so I think I'm going to call it quits at platinum #200 which gives me 10 more games.

Really accurate comment here. Atreus sections felt like nothing but padding, plus you couldn't even get through the collectibles without being subjected to 400 mini fights in-between each collectible, further padding the experience. Oh and of course Muspelheim was a grind that made the least of all sense. GOW 2018 was far superior to this one.

So thankful I never enountered this bug during my Playthrough. Took me over 140 something episodes to complete not to mention failed takes. Would have been pissed! Lol
Damn man that is hell there. It took me about 10 ish stream episodes of spider man 2 last week while visiting family in Utah. I couldn’t imagine doing 140 episodes.

I think you can tell the story was crafted by different people than the first game. That was mainly done by Cory Barlog and his focus was all about Kratos and Atreus. Which is why we learnt things as they did, and were introduced to characters as they were. It does a lot for the immersion and enjoyment of the story I think.

Totally with you on this one. I like getting platinums too but only if i find it rewarding. Being glitched out of a platinum sucks and its not worth the pain of all those extra hours. Love your content and thanks for your continued efforts.

So unfortunate. I just finished the platinum of this game myself, and I very rarely platinum games anymore. It’s strange that some of your critiques are the exact same gameplay loops as GOW 2018. The collectible system is the same and while mildly tedious, it’s not nearly as bad as some games. At least you can see the region breakdowns and the regions are usually pretty small, a beach here or a village there.
My problem with the bad collectibles is that there were bad in 2018 and the developers didn't make them better. Surely, they must know they suck and have a terrible travel system, but just did it again.
That is why I was particularly annoyed for Ragnarok, haha.

Episodes are as long or as short as they need to be. I don't want to artificially inflate the runtime, only ends up boring people.

I never even went for the platinum in this game. I enjoyed it, but as you alluded to, I felt like i was "watching" it more than actually playing it.
Ragnarok is a visually stunning game, no doubt about that. But the pacing is all over the shop. I dont think a sequel to GoW 2018 should be 'hit and miss,' but that's what we got. Fair play for going as far as you did...

It's been years since I've played this game, but I remember there being a lost items chest near Brok in the world tree I think. Might be worth checking if the missing item is there.

Condolences Adam. I had a similar experience with Assassins Creedy Odyssey. Last trophy was finish all underwater locations. I did them all only to find out that a chest was causing glitches at one of the underwater locations so they deleted the chest in a patch. What they neglected to do was update the trophy requirements. Location on the map says 3 of 3. The trophy expects 4 of 4. If I want the platinum I would need to go buy a physical copy, disconnect my playstation from the internet so that it won't update, Install the 1.00 version on the disc and play the whole damn game again praying along the way to not run into any game breaking or save corrupting bugs. Do all the underwater locations again leaving the last chest for the end, and then just hope that opening it pops the Platinum. Absolutely heart breaking for a game I initially hated and grew to enjoy. If I pushed through again it would take dozens of hours and that would be my memory of the game. Not the good time but the glitch induced grind replay. Love the video none the less.

It's a downer for sure, but you're not alone for this kind of glitch. Not for Ragnarok, but I've had singular trophies glitch that have caused me to quit out of games (blasted disco trophy in R&C 2016 will be the bane of my existence). A cheers to you Adam, albiet a somber cheers.

Bro I totally get your frustration with this. Doom 2016 glitched me out of the platinum right near the end and I just had no motivation to do the whole thing again. I hated the game for years until I decided for some reason to go back a few years later. Now its one of my favourite games ever but a bad platinum journey can COMPLETELY fuck up your perspective on a game. Great vid nonetheless 💪🏼

Despite the outcome, I still loved the episode brother. I had the exact same thoughts on Aterus throughout, I really hope the next God of War is much more focused on Kratos. Side note: you're looking great too, man! Hope life is treating you well. Keen for The Last of Us Part 1, I really enjoyed getting that platinum, much more doable than the PS3/PS4 versions haha.

And to see all the comments saying they had similar feeling about the game as you did is shocking to me. On the bright side the game Beyond Good and Evil is getting a special 20th anniversary edition and coming to current gen consoles and pc. Would you do a Platinum Journey on that game?

The maze in the first one where you have to collect those Anchor of fogs (or whatever they're called 😅) almost broke me, so tedious. The maps in these games are abysmal. If developers insist on collectibles then they should be made as easy as possible. On another topic, knowing your love of Beyond good and evil, with the anniversary out now that contains a platinum, is there a chance that will sneaking into the schedule? Love this channel

to help avoid bugs i would suggest playing offline on a blank account and only adding a game to your main account once you have 100%. that's how i do it and i very rarely even encounter bugs or glitches.

Also I have funny story about game bugs. Back in the day in 2004 I think I had no internet and at one time I played Prince of Persia Warrior Within. It was my first POP game. My classmates finished this game without problem, but I had funny bug that after 1 boss fight(woman in black in some throne area) game prompts you to check new updated map and I skipped it so game ended up thinking that I am on the same route but way later in the game. At that point you have sword that breaks walls so my playthrough stopped at the unbreakable wall. Next time I played game without problems, on 3rd playthrough I finally understood why it was happening ))) So if you get to second encounter with Shadee check map after boss fight so game will update areas. Another stupid fail was that I didn't upload Rayman Legends save with 700 lums and lost it so challenges grind needs to be restarted :D

I didn't rush the story - I did just about every side quest along the way - although that isn't conveyed in the episode. Didn't have much to say about side quests, they were fine.
Some areas had collectibles that couldn't be accessed until you have a new ability or the spear. Decided to just wait until the end. Didn't expect it to be quite a slog though.

Sucks you didn't enjoy this one Adam, and on top of that you encountered a glitch preventing you from the plat. I personally loved it, but even I didn't go back for ng+ because of it's pacing, so I get it.

Once I figured out what to do, I found Gna quite simpler than King Hrolf to be honest. Sucks to see a bug screw you out of a magnificent platinum that is GOW Ragnarok man.
Gna having similar moves to the previous Valkyries was cool. Yeah, bugged trophies suck.

EVERYTHING should be marked after the main story, or after a side mission as a reward. Relying on guides is just poor UX.

Gotta say that I actually enjoyed the game, although I do agree with you for the collectibles, they were a struggle as usual due to the grind.
But overall I think I preferred the first Norse game more. I've come to the realisation that I enjoy the build and hype to a finale than the finale itself.

Hey Adam, love your videos generally and its always a highlight for me when i see a new one posted. However, i can't help feeling a little disappointed in this one. I platinumed Ragnorok last year and loved it totally. I fully appreciate the difference of opinion and completely love the honesty you have about your feelings towards the game, but this video didn't have your usual spark for me and felt a little forced (again understandable why).
Anyway, despite this, I am really looking forward to TLOU part 1 next! Keep up the great stuff

Do you think that Platinum trophies can sometimes be detrimental to the overall enjoyment of a video game? Or, do you not feel as if you can have a fair opinion of a game without the platinum and your overall experience of it?
A good trophy list extend the lifespan of a game in a good way. Resident Evil and the extra challenges offered new ways to play for example.
Unfortunately, some games have terrible trophy lists which I wouldn't recommend.
God of War 2018 was a simple, but very effective story. I found Ragnarok overbearing and to be honest, quite boring. The gameplay as well began to annoy me, as the length of the game made the gameplay limitations very obvious. I just ended up putting it on the easiest difficulty 🤷. Not to help either, the stupid damn collectibles. If I got the glitch you had, I would’ve gone mad, sorry that happened. However, as always, a great video Adam!
