I remember how frustrating habbo was ~12 years ago when I was a teen, everything costs coins and you get nothing if you don't spend any irl money in it. No wonder I feel the same annoyance towards everything today, I'm just in my late 20s. At least it taught me a very valuable lesson on microtransactions in games.

It wasn't the path is the way, it was 'The Path is grey'. The grey light at the end of the path was basically the Geno version of heaven. Anyone not a Geno was a prismatic (basically anyone wearing anything that wasn't gray.) 'Mancube the prismatics' was another of the Geno sayings, usually yelled right before eight Geno made a square around some random person, trapping them completely and preventing them from moving. Once they were tapped the Geno would all spam FAP over and over, and it was exactly what you think it was. All the Geno from the Something Awful forums all arranged to stage an in game mass suicide when it got boring.

I kinda knew and heard of Habbo Hotel when I was a teen. I think it was even mentioned in some teen magazines as cool online hangout spot. Never felt like checking it out though. And from what it looks like staying away was a good idea.
It got canned in 2015 in the Nordics, as they couldn't keep it up due to the social media growing.
And it got into contraversies in Sweden as well, one kid got scammed for example for using his parents money without asking.
I remember playing Habbo Hotel during my high school years in the mid-2000s. I only played it because of the Goth Rooms since the goth scene was popular around that time. I had no idea until watching this video that Habbo Hotel was being used for gambling and scamming people.

I stuck to forums and avoided this type of stuff. The only thing I really knew about it was the pool's closed. The Palace is an older graphical chat game than Habbo. But I don't know too much about it other than the Silent style pixel dolls were made with The Palace in mind. I used to play with Silent doll makers but didn't use them for chats.

I think the Pool's Closed thing is one of my favorite Habbo occurrences, because the way you out it is somewhatwrong.
They didnt think all of the mods were racist, that what they *everyone else* to think, they just heard rumour that there was tendacy. Being 4chan, they flew with it, as they should have. The aids thing came from the fbi statistics around black people sharing the highest amount of aids victims per capita, and also just in general i think. The pool was because it was easy, and also because of Aids. Of course, let us not forget the slang that came from 4chans bano boards, such as Harbl, Nigra, and the famous Swastiget.
Oh yeah, and then they did it all in real life as youve said, even doing it in front of the corporate offices. Ah, better days.

I remember growing up, IRC was a hellhole with DDOS, WinNuke, etc. Seems predators, scammers, hackers, script kiddies, etc. will never go away.

This felt like my social life back in the day and met so many good people from Habbo. There were so many different room types that weren’t covered in the video as it all depended what people wanted to interact with. Like 2 I didn’t interact with but saw loads of were the military groups and the adoption rooms.
Like my first interaction was with a Pokémon role playing group where everyone was either a trainer or a level 100 shiny charizard. Then I moved onto making mazes which I spent way too much money making. There’s also the thing that there were so many different Habbo hotels for different countries until they all merged together at some point.
Then the video mentions coins but I remember the main currency were Habbo club sofas and thrones. Want the red parasol? It’s 5 sofas. Want a typewriter? It’s currently 3 thrones. Also on the note of coins they charged more to buy physical coins you can trade with. If you have 30 coins in your purse it’ll cost something like 32 to buy 30 worth of tradable coins.
I played Gaia Online. I loved that place so much growing up. I stopped just before the gold issue happened.
16:54 The "pool's closed" blocking wasn't because 4chan thought the mods/owners were racists. It was because Habbo was seen as a terrible place. The character choice was done so, as you explain, when they were inevitably banned, they (and spectators) could pull out claims of racism as a way to mark the mods/owners as such (especially when it got to a point that avatars in that, or a similar, style got instantly banned).

I remember the Habbo Mafias that would dox players and threaten them. Wild to think that exists in a game like Habbo but it was a big part of the game when I was growing up.
There was actually a large ad for Habbo in one of those bulletin boards behind cases in the high school I went too.
Pretty sure I started using habbo back in 2002 or 2003 when I was 11 or 12. I did meet some amazing people on there. Quit it around 2006 2007 when id left school. Was amazing back in its prime. Once id left it, habbo just went downhill. Seeing this now, I can't believe its still a thing.

Pool closed raids is the best thing ever
I didn't have a terrible experience on Habbo, because I was playing with my sibling and cousin, and mostly entertaining each other. I was never into the girlfriend/boyfriend chasing on any social game. We were also teens, so there was some awareness of internet safety. My mom's approach to internet safety was basically scaring us about stranger danger,especially if anyone asked about our location/or wanting to meet up. It made us pretty wary to make internet friends outside of people we knew in our actual lives until we were in college. I never dwelt with grooming or creeps, but I hear so many stories from women who dwelt with that as kids. My cousin and sibling got scammed on Gaia Online instead, instead of on Habbo.
I remember being on Habbo during the raids, it was quite a time to be alive.
Got a shit-ton of furni from playing Falling Furni (I got really good at it), and it was also my first true brush with the concept of 4chan. 🤣

My sis played this back in the day in the 2000s I didnt use real qorld money, but I felt the addiction playing Neopets. Gambling for rare pets was so addictive.
Do maplestory next! They focused more on solo play after 2010 (came out 2005) and killed a huge aspect of the social part of the game where people dated and flirted too lol
my account from 2007 is still up I remember when in a falling furni players would say I asked to "Trade" (you couldnt move when that happened) and I would get kicked! it was such a scam with people and also they would make your work for them to get stuff but you wouldnt ever get there furni and also saying there was a website where you could get free credits if you put your account details there and then you would be hacked. YEP! habbo hasn't changed much only it looks worse now!

I had such an intense nostalgic and ptsd reaction to just the first half of this video. Habbo hotel was no doubt my first experience at fomo, crushing anxiety, being fully manipulated, defeat/loss, dopamine from gains, and interacting with the mentally deranged -- all online, all in one spot. I could clamor for an official Coca Cola Furni drop like a possum rummaging through branded trash and within minutes get treated to the 90 billionth pools closed raid-- and when the raid nearly made my browser explode I'd accidently wander into a furry orgy. This is truly the raw power of the 21st century internet, unfurling its cursed paw and revealing its inner workings, and I got to do it all when I was like 14

Lmfaoooooooo!!! Never did I think I'd see the day where Habbo Hotel got its own documentary. Played the game as a very young teenager, all I remember is how many predators were on the site (yuck) and having way too many Habbo credits because they'd just let you call from any number to make the purchase. My poor parents' phone bills... 🤦♀

I only knew of Habbo from its joke status and the linguistical pun (Habbo sounded like ass in Portuguese) and not too long later, the raids. It all sounded too silly.

You start off barely being able to scratch together the cheapest piece of furniture, and you're so proud of it. You put that money in and you were able to materialize stuff in game that is there permanently, which was insane. Maybe a couple of couches and a table you could afford if you did what I did, which is to sent the lowest amount of money in via SMS (very naughty, stole like $2 from mom).
But then you go to someone elses room, and literally every tile is covered with the most expensive things you can buy. You can't even walk in there because there's items on everything. Looks awful too. So you're like, ok wtf is going on here. Then you go to other rooms and see that people are playing some sort of game you can't understand. After a while and you figure out that they're betting on various different games in different rooms, and here is where you make your first meager wins gambling on these. Except you figure out after a while that the house always wins, so now you (probably like 7 years old) start figuring out how these scams work, and you try running them yourself.
And despite not having much resources to work with, you somehow find people willing to "play" in your terribly outfitted room that you got with some more of mom's money. Coin starts building, and stakes slowly get higher. You need to do things more intricate, running the more "trusted" kinds of games where you "can't get scammed". You start slowly building connections, eventually hiring workers. All working up the moment where you get tired of it and backstab everyone, taking huge amounts of money and leave the game. Now you build your own room where ever tile is covered with only the most expensive stuff so that there are no free tiles left to walk on. People can only come in and look at it.
I have been sent from the future to close the pool.

Had a "wtf is he talking about?" moment when you mentioned Minecraft at the beginning, and then I remembered Bedrock Version exists and it's cashshopped to hell which is why i've never touched it and stuck to Java Version. Java version is still the game as it was meant to be before Microsoft got their live-service-ificating cash-shopifying claws into the IP and monetized the hell out of the other newer versions, and Mojang is doing its best to keep it that way by sacrificing the other versions to the monetization demons to keep Microsoft happy and off their backs. I feel bad for all the people who are stuck thinking that nightmare is what Minecraft is supposed to be like because they've never played the real game only the other versions.
