Hello Jac, There’s not enough to it to make it interesting. The pieces are half lapped together. I drilled a 1/2” hole for the dowel, glued the half lap together, then lathered the dowel with glue and drove it into the hole. That is really all there is to it. Regards, Bob
My wife freaked out too when she saw them, LOL. This works perfect for locating the holes and keeping them aligned. The screws also hold the slats in place until the glue can dry. That way the dowels should all align and the slats won’t move while drilling for the dowels. It’s a true means to an end. Regards, Bob
The red/white/blue blank is one I have turned three of. All three shattered. I want to see how this works for you. I have 1 left. What do you do in your free time? Lol
you mentioned the towels being turned and I thought you did this on the lathe. then you mentioned using a jig. are there details on the jig? great video! thanks
I turned the 1/2” dowels on the lathe. I used this jig for the 5/16” dowels: www.amazon.com/Twotrees-Adjustable-Electric-Suitable-Auxiliary/dp/B0CGXB71S5/ref=mp_s_a_1_7_sspa?crid=36SBNKQSMXS8X&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.iRM3bmN-9ckSDDGVzBE_-g-Qn4IL5fVC_hq8bDkKSiQumDlobqXp_UdC6e1z9n97oF9al0BLRqoaPME-tkgLdy2Fzd9rlOjvCnvl3UlMrd1c8t-e6D0obbbhLu8626MJE3zqtw_aJm7acoD8XrwtWBi8b6v42OQYO7Lm113wJ5eBV6AJe7X4H61bjsSxv2Gc4fdeLG1mSJ-PMljWUXwq8A.pcPAILCkNKfKgQ8TivA9Qs6NOL8KCpdFdN966S6NB7A&dib_tag=se&keywords=dowel+jig&qid=1714862678&sprefix=dowel+jig%2Caps%2C97&sr=8-7-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9zZWFyY2hfbXRm&psc=1
Make a video showing the dowel process on the swing

Good job on the swing. I was about to have a stroke when I first saw the screws sticking out. Thanks for explaining your idea with the dowels.
