    This wasn't a loss. It was a learning experience. It reminds us all to take a second to make sure the mandrel isn't bent. I'm looking forward to seeing turn the orange blank. Orange is my favorite color.

      The first half of the orange blank was recorded differently than I normally do it. I need to finish it the same way and see how it turns out.

    Bob just offering an idea with blank that blew out how about covering all around that end with CA glue and use the Activator and at least set for about 15 minutes then just sand with 150 sand paper and just to get it smoth then put a little more CA again let it set for 15 minutes again now I think you can use your turning tool and just go nice and easy.

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  6 месяцев назад

      That would work.
      I decided not to mess with the blank and offered it up to my Patrons to attempt the repair. One of them took me up on it. 😀

    Here something else I did with that small crack you will need to produce some saw dust from the purple blank anyway put just a little CA glue on that small crack and work in the dust you produce from sanding work it into that crack as good as you can spray a little of that freeze to set up the CA and let it set for about 15 minutes hopefully it works for you. You might need to do it a 2nd time. Good luck

    It looks like when you glued the errant chunk in the first time, you pretty much only put CA on the wood. You didn't actually glue the chunk to the TUBE. I had a mesquite blank blow apart on me last week, so I feel your pain.

    Bugger. Looked like it would have been a great blank. Maybe add white acrylic accent pieces on the ends. Could possibly salvage it. I had a blank break on me yesterday. Made some nice dark wood accents.

    Hi Bob, I bet if you turned the ends of both blanks back down to the brass, enough to get rid of the chipped part and then epoxy some black ebonite or acrylic onto the, they would look nice on that chrome cigar kit. Also, it may have been my imagination, but I could swear that the mandrel was flexing when you applied pressure with the skew. Weird.

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  6 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks David,
      I gave those blanks away to one of my Patrons. I didn’t feel like messing with them any further.
      Looking at the video, it does look more prominent when the skew is next to the mandrel. I don’t think it showed as well on the video as it looked locally.

    Hi Bob, I've been having one of those weeks so far myself. I just didn't like the fit on the first one and the second one cracked on the end when I was pressing it together - even though I filed, chamfered, and waxed the inside of the tube before pressing. As you said, win-some, lose-some. - Dave

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  6 месяцев назад

      I hate to hear that Dave. Pressing is the worst time to lose a blank because of all the work it took to get it to that point.

    ...novice here...my slimlines all came out well (ten so far). Moved up to the euro style...while cleaning up the tenon edge with a square carbide chisel, the side of the chisel caught the upper edge of the tenon and ripped the wood apart. Worst part? This happened twice even though I was being extremely careful on the second one. Luckily, there was enough wood left to turn them down into slimlines...
    My third euro came out nicely with just the parting tool...
    Any chance you can salvage these into another style?
    Keep up the great work...👍
