Y'know, a lot of people are afraid of the AI uprising and the inevitable takeover by our robot overlords. But when it comes time for them to design tanks for their robot army, I think they'll still need a little bit of a human touch.

Its possible that the issue with the AI always wanting an all-arounder and "generic" tank was because the AI isn't aware of any *other* tanks under it's command. It's possible that the AI see's it as being the only tank it will have available in the war, so it needs to be decent at everything.

I noticed that when playing a dice-rolling game ChatGPT always rolls average scores of around 10. Unless you specifically say what you rolled the AI isn’t going to give you a crit-fail or a crit. The issue here is that this isn’t really an AI but instead a language model. It’s not made to make its own decisions but instead intended to more or less copy how the internet is presented to it. It does have a creative element to it but that too is trained into the model.
It’s meant to be a tool that helps you get results faster than actually doing long research sessions, and even then it’s not reliable enough to truly replace research. Like, it never makes its own decisions. Every time I try to do an RP session with it I have to make my own encounters otherwise it just fast forwards me to the objective. And even if I write multiple possible scenarios and outcomes I have to specify that it should pick one of them and not just use the first one that shows up.

@@3personal5me8 It’s less actual DnD and more “Hey ChatGPT, I’ll do this thing, tell me what happened.” And it tells me what happened (except usually everything goes too optimally). The AI just keeps on not actually doing much to attack me. Still kinda fun at times tho and it does have its moments.

    • @zoro115-s6b
      @zoro115-s6b 6 месяцев назад +2

A bit late but its more that the AI itself is basically just a really complicated averaging machine, so its looking at a huge number of descriptions of WWII tanks (or at least, things containing similar keywords like "tank" and the dates and locations he gives, and its giving an average response, creating a very generic WWII tank with features common across multiple different models from multiple different nations, like 75mm guns.
It's not smart enough to consider where this tank fits into a larger tank force, or rather, it doesn't think that way in the first place. If you wanted multiple models you could tell it something like "give me specifications for the three main types of tank a country should field", but you'd probably still get the same or similar answers every time you asked it that question.

I love the 1934-1940 tank design era because of the very distinctive charm and look to every nation’s tank designs. The Eastern Europeans liked the 7tp and T-26 look, the French liked round tanks with small turrets, big hills, and tracks that looked inflatable. The Germans went with panzer 1, 2, and 3 shape in this time, the Brit’s did what they always do: a hodgepodge of interesting designs, each made to solve a problem in exiting and creative ways. Japan was being Japan the whole war and making light tanks. The US made light tanks and wierd mediums like the M2 and the M3. Everyone was unique and fun. I don’t blame you for loving this era. It is a ball of magic and wierd tanks.

in my free time I built an unholy abomination in sprocket. The best way I know how to describe it is, a modified M4A3 Sherman hull (and mantel) with the hull MG replaced with the MG turret of the Crusader I. it uses two sets of HVSS on each track and has the side skirts of a Matilda II or a later Churchill model. its turret is a mix of a Churchill and a Cromwell with the radio box of the Firefly attached to the elongated rear of the turret. It has three options when it comes to armaments, the A1 model has a similar gun to the earlier Shermans, the A2 has a gun nearly identical to the one found on the M41 Walker Bulldog, and the A3 has a 105mm like that of the M4A3 "Sherman 105". All three of the models have a top speed of about 58 km/h (~36 mph) and at least 20 rounds of ammo stored in the back of the turret.
the name of this "thing" is... the M5 'Bernard'
    edit: its midwar

Bad Company! 🤘- Another great looking little tank. I totally agree that inter/early war is the most fun to build for. Quick note about speed. For 1938 you want to be building in Earlywar. Sprocket’s Interwar era has rolling resistance set only a fraction lower than in WW1. In other words, it’s very much tuned towards 1920s rather than 1930s tanks, especially late 30s. You’ll get the performance you’d expect out of a 1938 tank with 400hp in Earlywar, while in Interwar your top speed is effectively capped by the massive rolling resistance and there’s not much you can do about it with tweaking.
Lovely to see the Shermwell remastered too by the way ❤

Around the 18 minutes mark, your tank reaches 30kph on... 2nd or 3rd gear, out of the 5 it has.
Maybe not faster, but you could get a lot more acceleration out of it if you make the gears shorter (sliders more to the right)
This happened with my first light tank too, realized it, fixed it, and altough the top speed didnt change it was much faster to get up to it, and it used reasonable gearing when turning or going up slopes instead of slowing a bunch

Maybe it would be worthwhile asking ChatGPT for design guidelines in successive questions. That might make it possible to get more diverse design requirements., unless the text generation is too primitive.
So first laying out geographic situation and year and asking whether it should be a heavy, medium or light tank.
If it's a heavy for example what should be its dimensions? What about the weight?
And always incorporating the previous answers.
Going for a pre-1930s date might help too as would specifying a rough role like fortress buster or cavalry tank but that might take the fun out of it.

Hey ETA , couple of tips to get better speed.
    1) the weight is king . I know you like all the stuff on the back to look cool but everything you put on there to "look good" adds unecessary weight.
And btw the british engine decks with the long slats/louvre type things arent seperate doors , they were actually armoured cooling pipes, if you go look at the matilda 2 i think thats where they got it righr. Also look at tank like the covenator, youll read about the mistake they made of moving these armoured pipes to the front but this made the cooling really bad , they had to feed them back to the engine so long pipes on side. It failed because it didnt cool well, the side pipes were easily damaged and having your radiator on the front meant it would be hit first and so you immediately lost your engine when you got hit front on.
I do like your idea of several doors for engine access , it could be a winner but maybe 2 or 3 not 6 or more 😅 also the more fittings to secure them the more weight so not the best.
I also think whilst your turret looks kinda cool it is very tall , and so makes your tank easier to spot, harder to hide etc
That last tank you showed with the decals what a cool looking tank!
It really does look comet like and crusader like. Nice work.
Anyway back to this speed. You know rivets, you should remember the reason we had to rivet was the lack of ability to weld, cheaper amd quicker to build too.
But you have to start with an under frame which you rivet armoured panels ONTO. so youd see rivets when you changed an angle. Hense riveted tanks tend to be much more boxy. No unecessary angled plates and again more weight. Better to have a single panel and if getting shot wasnt an isue you could put 1 rivet in each corner of each panel. The reason they put rows of rivets was 1)so rivets could be smaller and 2) so you had redundancy, if shot it would ping off 1 or 2 rivets but the rest would keep your tank together.
Once countries began to get the machinery to weld and trained workers they, instead of starting with a frame with panels bolted on , made the whole panels the actual structure. No need for the underframe. You reduced weight, actually made it stronger and much much lighter. Its very similar to the early metal skin aeroplanes. They took away the frames with canvas cover and made it stressed skin , thin metal and so created better, stronger fuselage and wings.
So if you want speed. Cut down to minimum the number of pannels. Take off any unecessary fittings etc
    Hope this helps

Hey, i thought id try the same and ask the AI for an unique design but tried a different prompt. The AI's response was a bit more interesting this time around since it told me this:
    Armor:
Consider a combination of sloped and thick frontal armor to enhance protection against enemy projectiles.
Ensure adequate side and rear armor to guard against flanking attacks.
    Mobility:
Opt for a powerful engine to provide sufficient horsepower for mobility on various terrains.
Include a reliable suspension system to enhance maneuverability and stability.
    Armament:
Equip the tank with a main cannon capable of penetrating German tank armor. Consider a caliber of at least 75mm to ensure effectiveness.
Add secondary armaments such as machine guns for anti-infantry and anti-aircraft purposes.
    Crew and Interior:
Design a spacious and ergonomic crew compartment to optimize crew efficiency and comfort.
Implement effective communication systems and vision devices for enhanced situational awareness.
    Camouflage:
Develop a camouflage pattern that suits the local environment, taking inspiration from the surrounding terrain and vegetation.
    Support Systems:
Consider incorporating smoke launchers to provide cover during tactical maneuvers.
Install a reliable and advanced fire suppression system to mitigate the risk of internal fires.
Now i know this sounds quite generic, but i was suprised when it started giving commands on camouflage and fire suppression systems, maybe you could try to make one more tank?

It gets nutty the less restrictions and prompting you give it.

IIRC the way I did it was by making the tank weigh basically nothing, while increasing the diameter of the drive sprocket and fiddling with the gear ratios until I got something that worked. A powerful engine also helps, as long as it's not too heavy.

Quick question, where did you get your custom decals? I can't seem to find them online.

    • @eta320
      @eta320  11 месяцев назад +1

A good chunk of them came from the Sprocket official discord, and some came from my time being a guest judge for competitions. The contestants had to submit their decals for us to see them when we downloaded their tanks to test. And my own discords sprocket community.

If you are at least willing to make some minor updates to this tank, might I suggest changing the name from the "Mediterranean Thunderbolt", which I agree is a bit on the nose and beating you over the head with its country of origin, and instead calling it the "Keravnós" or the "Fulmine", which are just "Thunderbolt" in Greek and Italian, respectively

Hey Eta320, did you get your decals from a large pack or dowload? Or did you manually add the mall? Thanks, enjoyed the series!

Okay, you gotta make an upgraded / upscaled TKS in your next sprocket video, whenever it may be.
Edit: Didn't want to add another comment, but doesn't this look like a down-scaled pershing?
